O
ver 100,000 people visited the Volvo Ocean Race in Newport, RI this year. Forty-two percent of the visitors came from outside of Rhode Island and ten percent of those attendees were from foreign countries. The smallest state in the USA was the only North American stopover of the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race. The beautiful colonial town of Newport, known for its legendary mansions, was the ninth leg for this world-class racing event. This City-by-the-Sea that has long been associated with the America’s Cup, now served as one of the host cities for the seven teams that sailed 45,000 nautical miles around the world, across four oceans, touching six continents and 12 host cities. www.volvooceanrace.com/en/home.html

he 51st Biennial Newport to Bermuda Race, founded in 1906, is one of the oldest scheduled ocean races. It begins in Newport, RI and ends at the finish line off of St. David’s Lighthouse, Bermuda. 2018 RACE WEEK AT NEWPORT PRESENTED BY ROLEX

R
ace Week at Newport presented by Rolex was held at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, RI from July 18-21. This biennial race week is now in its 11th running, and is considered one of the leading summer race weeks in the Northeast. The race’s popularity is due not only to Newport’s wonderful sailing conditions, but to the NYYC’s all-volunteer race committee’s who provide exceptional race management throughout the event. While previous editions have featured two parts, this year all competing yachts raced at the same time with racing running for four days and closing with the Rolex Awards Banquet for all competitors and their guests.

ome 200 sailboats competed in this year’s Figawi Race Weekend. Over 3,000 sailors and visitors hailed from all over the country to attend this pursuit regatta from Hyannis to Nantucket. The theory of this pursuit race is that all those competing will reach Nantucket at the same time. Everyone gets to meet up with old friends and make new ones at the numerous parties held at the Hyannis Yacht Club and under a tent in Nantucket. The event ends with a newly formatted Monday Race named “Redux” that ends in a neutral location allowing skippers to head north or south towards home.

early 2000 sailors hailing from all over the United States and over a dozen foreign countries attended the 23rd edition of Sperry Charleston Race Week held in a city known for its rich history, wellpreserved architecture and hospitable people. Almost 250 boats in 16 classes competed in the three-day event that combined one-design and handicap racing. Skipper Mike Beasley and his Annapolis-based crew aboard Rattle-n-Rum captured honors at Sperry Charleston Race Week for the third consecutive year.

Sabrina’s Adaptive Beach Days A brilliant way to help everyone enjoy the ocean By MARÍA IRIONDO

y good friend Carla Ruhl has a heart of gold. She’s always finding ways to help others and not too long ago, she invited me to volunteer for Sabrina’s Adaptive Beach Days, an initiative to help people with disabilities enjoy a day at the beach. I was humbled by the amazing experience. It’s another gorgeous early Sunday morning in Miami Beach. Sunny skies and clear blue waters. A long blue runner leads to a large tent crowded with enthusiastic volunteers and guests who are welcomed with the smell of hot coffee, warm bagels, fresh fruit, water and even an arts and crafts station. Colorful beach chairs for lounging are scattered on the sand next to a large platform where several yellow floating wheelchairs await their guests. A group of young FIU students anxiously listens to senior volunteer Walter Javier for the do’s and don’ts of helping out.”Don’t take any participants into the water alone and keep to the schedule so that all participants can enjoy water time,” he explains. “High tide peaks at noon, then six hours of lowering tide allowing for a soft easterly breeze promises a more than enjoyable beach day.” There are people who suffer and there are those who suffer yet still find the time to help others who are suffering just like them. Drive, determination and good will are the characteristics that come to mind when I think of Sabrina Cohen. Paralyzed from the neck down as a result of a car accident when she was fourteen, Cohen’s life was turned upside down when she became bound to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. In 2016, she came up with the idea of creating a foundation to raise funds for stem cell research but as it turned out, she also found a way to do even more - help others,
like herself - enjoy something most people in South Florida take for granted: a day at the beach. How many times do we go to the beach, pull out our towel, lay on the sand, step into the water, swim at our leisure and come out to sunbathe without even thinking that there are people that simply cannot manage to do any of that? “I had an overwhelming desire to get close to the ocean...” says Cohen. “It was a beautiful sunny day. I knew I might get stuck but I was adventurous. It took six guys to get me out. Humiliating.” Others like Cohen felt the same way. Jesus de Leon de Jesus, a young gymnast whose frontal flip lead to spinal cord injury used to come to the beach but never dared to get close to the water. “I didn’t like being helped. I didn’t want to trouble anyone.” Being confined to a wheelchair makes a beach outing a real challenge yet someone like Sabrina Cohen has had the brilliant idea of finding a way to make it easier for other disabled individuals like herself and Jesus. A group of specialized staff and volunteers provides access to a platform of decks, mats and floating wheelchairs that allow disabled participants in and out of the water with ease. My friend Carla, a physical therapist who is part of the senior crew, has been training volunteers since the program started three years ago. “Beach Days gives me the opportunity to give back while at the same time be rewarded by the participants’ joy of experiencing something we all take for granted.’ Jonathan Villalobos, who became blind as a result of a brain tumor, never misses a day.“It’s like family, I’m always happy to be here. I love to be rocked by the

waves when I go into the ocean.” His girlfriend Eleijdis Martinez, who is also blinded by a brain tumor, agrees. “We have so much fun here.” Sabrina Cohen’s goal is to get everyone to enjoy the beach. Disabled individuals, children with special needs, veterans and the elderly all should have the chance to take a dip in the ocean as much as any Floridian. Last year, the Sabrina Cohen Foundation, in partnership with the city of Miami Beach, opened Sabrina’s Playground, the first fully accessible playground for residents and visitors, a public space designed to enable children of all abilities to play together. Soon the doors will open to the Sabrina Cohen Adaptive Recreation Center in Mid-Beach. Adaptive Beach Days is a truly unique experience for guests and volunteers alike. Thanks to Sabrina Cohen’s brilliant idea, “everyone” is having a good time at the beach. ohnson Yachts builds luxury superyachts that combine a striking profile, smart engineering, and a large interior volume that allows the owner the flexibility to customize the layout. Established in 1987, the yard is a family enterprise that has built more than 350 yachts for discerning owners who understand the importance of quality workmanship, attention to engineering detail, and performance and handling. The builder blends the customized British designs from Dixon Yacht Design with the excellent craftsmanship of Taiwan to create yachts that stand out from the crowd. Boarding the Johnson 93 is simple from the spacious “teak-beach” swim platform, which has hydraulic aft section that facilitates bathing as well as the launch, retrieval, and stowage of a tender. Guests find port and starboard stairs leading to the aft deck, shaded by the long overhang of the flying bridge. The saloon is bright and airy with light-colored anigre joinery and large windows port and starboard. A social area aft includes an upholstered L-shaped settee and a pair of swivel chairs surrounding a mother- of-pearl coffee table. At the forward end of the salon is a formal dining table with eight upholstered chairs, convenient to the galley through a door forward to port. The galley has a marble sole and two-tone lacquered cabinets, with stainless steel counters.

The flying bridge has access from the pilothouse, and also from stairs leading from the aft deck. The helm station is to port with low helm console that assures good lines of sight from the helm seat, and with a companion seat to port and a forward-facing bench to starboard. A large U-shaped settee with dining table is to starboard while a wet bar and alfresco galley counter with propane grill is to port. An open area aft is suitable for sunning with lounge chairs. The Johnson 93 has a LOA of 93 feet and a beam of 23 feet, 7 inches that carries well forward, with a distinctive profile set apart by a notable design element: dual-level vertical windows. The lower bank of nine curved panes of black glass lend their light to a main-deck master, though privacy is assured with electric curtains. The large

Behind the upper-level bank of vertical windows is the raised pilothouse, where the five center panes are clear tempered glass for better sight lines in low-light conditions, and provide 270-degree views to assist safe navigation. The pilothouse is three steps up from the passageway at the forward end of the saloon. Built into a leathercovered console is a full suite of navigation electronics with a pair of 16-inch touchscreen displays. A dinette provides companion seating for the helmsman. The lower deck features an amidships VIP stateroom, which is, for all intents and purposes, a second master, stretching across the full beam. This space receives a generous quantity of natural light from two levels of rectangular portlights set into the hullsides. With hanging lockers both port and starboard, the VIP features a dinette to starboard and a desk or dressing table to port. The en suite is aft, with his-and- her heads entered from separate doors to either side of the berth. In each head, marble-topped vanities with vessel sinks with a shared, walkthrough shower on centerline between them. A pair of twin-berth staterooms round out the guest accommodations on the lower level. Johnson Yachts offers various layouts, as well as semi-custom modifications within this superyacht design, to allow owners to make the most of the hull’s volume. A skylounge is a consideration for owners looking at any yacht in the Johnson range. An on-deck master is not often seen in yachts of this LOA, and the flexibility of the semi-custom design allows such changes as a country kitchen forward on the main deck in place of the master, or additional guest staterooms belowdecks. The experience that Johnson Yachts has in building these superyachts comes through in other important ways. In this build series, the engine rooms are identical. Because of the series production of the 93- to 110-foot models, the mechanical and electrical systems are on a proven platform with more than 30 builds in this series. The result is a standardization of systems with a proven track record, rather than starting fresh with each build. The Taiwanese superyacht builder will customize the accommodations space with anywhere from three to six staterooms, and in fact no two boats in the series have been identical as the layouts have been tuned to owners’ tastes. But the company knows its engineering and uses its knowledge to build a boat that performs and handles well. With a pair of 1,925-horsepower Caterpillar C32s, the Johnson 93 will cruise at 21 knots and top out at 24 knots. Johnson Yachts looks at its builds the way professional captains do. “She has twin 4500-series Maxwell anchors that are in pockets in the hull, not sticking out of the bow like an afterthought,” says Jeff Stanley, the yacht broker at Gilman Yachts in Fort Lauderdale who is the U.S. East Coast dealer for this Johnson 93. “It’s a serious anchoring system, with 300 feet of chain.” This is just one example of many details that meet the high standards set by this builder. The Johnson 93 price is $4,300,000, imported to the U.S., with duty paid.

Marine Microbes Matter Marine microbes are the foundation of life on Earth: They produce half of the oxygen we breathe and are the base of the food chain. In fact, ninety-eight percent of the ocean’s biomass is made up of microbial life. Given their vital role in planetary processes and balance, it is important that we understand how ocean health issues such as ocean acidification and rising sea temperatures affect these organisms. In addition, marine microbes may lead to new advances in pharmaceuticals, fuel sources, and nutritional supplements. Bigelow Laboratory is the only independent basic research institution in the world that focuses on microbial oceanography— and its researchers want to spread the word about the world-class discoveries taking place at their state-of-the-art campus.

Tiny Giants: Marine Microbes Revealed on a Grand Scale is a photographic adventure featuring colorized and enlarged images of nearly invisible plants and animals that dominate the ocean. Their beauty will leave you awestruck. “Our idea behind the Tiny Giants images was to pique people’s imaginations about the invisible creatures that we study that are vital to our very existence,” says Dr. Benjamin Twining, director of research and education at Bigelow Laboratory. But how do you stir up interest and raise awareness about organisms so small that hundreds of thousands can live in just a single drop of seawater? You make the invisible visible. Dr. Peter Countway, Laura Lubelczyk, and other Bigelow Laboratory researchers used three types of microscopes—compound-light, confocal, and scanning electron—to capture 18 incredible images of marine microbes. Each of the high-powered microscopes provides a unique perspective and allows us to peer into this invisible world, but it takes a skilled and practiced hand to create the magical images seen in Tiny Giants. . The incredible magnifications --- some of the images are as big as four feet wide by five feet tall --- offer a unique glimpse at the intricacies of these marine-dwelling microbes; their exquisite shapes and patterns appear otherworldly.

Diatoms—single-celled algae—are giants of the microbial world; some are even visible to the naked eye. The cylindrical diatom Coscinodiscus has a skeleton made out of silica, a type of glass. This silica skeleton is remarkably efficient at harvesting energy from the Sun; so much in fact, that engineers are copying their complex architecture to optimize solar panel designs. The exhibit has been featured in libraries, schools, and art galleries. The response has been as impressive as the images themselves. “It was delightful to wander amongst the crowd and hear people exclaim about the beauty and wonder of marine microbes,” said Darlene Trew Crist, director of communications at Bigelow Laboratory, at the sold-out showing at District Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. Tiny Giants had a full summer schedule in 2016 including a World Oceans Day Summit on June 8th in Newport, Rhode Island, presented by Sailors for the Sea and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Pteropods may sound like a type of dinosaur, but they are actually sea snails. The species Limacina helicinauses wing-like feet to swim, and their graceful fluttering movements have earned them the nickname “sea butterflies.” Pteropods’ coiled shells are beautiful but vulnerable. They are in danger as increased ocean acidity is dissolving their shells made from the calcium carbonate mineral aragonite. This could affect the marine food chain because pteropods are a major food source for small fish and krill, which go on to feed large fish, whales, and sea birds. Copepod may not be a household name, but their numbers are impressive—they are the most abundant group of animals on Earth and make up over 21,000 species. These mini-crustaceans have no boundaries: They are found everywhere, from puddles on mountain peaks to trenches on the ocean floor. They even hang out in carnivorous pitcher plants. Copepods are an important part of the North Atlantic right whale’s diet; during their feeding season, a 140,000-pound right whale will eat over 2,500 pounds of copepods per day. Ostracods—tiny shrimp-like crustaceans also known as sea fireflies—give off a bright blue light through a chemical process called bioluminescence. In World War II, Japanese seamen dried and ground ostracods then mixed them with water to make portable lamps that helped them read maps in dim light. Educators used the exhibit to connect concepts of invisible marine microbes to their coursework. “We were excited to show the images in the Tiny Giants exhibition on campus last fall,” said Lori G. Kletzer, Colby Provost and Dean of Faculty. “Colby’s strategic partnership with Bigelow Laboratory provides world-class opportunities in marine science and climate science for our students—we knew that. The unique aesthetic for examining the natural microbial world through these photos completely reinforced the interdisciplinary approach that both our institutions value so highly.” The wonders of the microscopic world aren’t reserved for scientists. With Tiny Giants, Bigelow Laboratory is making the mysterious marine underworld accessible to everybody.

anish people have been named the happiest in the world. In spite of paying high taxes, their healthcare, transport and quality of life, according to some, make them number one in happiness. It’s easy to understand once you visit their colorful capital: Copenhagen. This vibrant and lively city stands at the forefront of environmental consciousness where heavy traffic is alleviated by ample bike lanes on some of the cleanest streets in the world. They’ve even pioneered food waste programs with organizations like the Stop Wasting Food Movement which gets supermarkets to offer discounts on single items as opposed to bulk, thus reducing food waste by 90%. Copenhagen is also home to the world’s first waste food supermarket, Wefood, which receives produce destined for the bin that is then sold at discounts of fifty percent. The best time to visit is the summer, when you can really appreciate the gorgeous landscaped boulevards and the glistening blue waters that surround the city. When biking along some of the western edge lakes, you might feel like you’re riding along the Seine river in Paris. These three rectangular lakes: Peblinge Sø ( Student Lake), Sortedam Sø (Black Pond Lake) and Sankt Jørgens Sø ( St. George’s Lake) are the perfect spot to rent a row boat or to simply relax by their shores. Over the Nørrebro bridge, you’ll find an up and coming district with a diverse mix of restaurants and cafés. What used to be a working class neighborhood has turned into a hip hub of plant covered buildings and lovely parks such

as the Superkilen which is split into three main sections: the Red Square with its urban cafés, the Black Market, a more traditional square with fountains and benches, and the Green Park, ideal for picnics and dog walking. Heading east, a nice stroll down the ample avenues leads to the more intricate cobblestone streets of the old town, lined with shops and taverns. The nearby Nyhavn (new harbor) showcases colorful building façades, busy outdoor cafés and a gorgeous display of antique sailboats that grace the docks. The famous Tivoli Gardens amusement park, first opened in 1843, is a magnificent estate decked with exotic buildings, theaters, bandstands, restaurants and cafés that turn into a magical spectacle at night with the Tivoli Illuminations, a lighting show that combines music, color, lasers, fire, smoke and water. You may catch a ride here on the world’s oldest roller coaster-the Rutschebanen. Some of its newest rides are the Aquila, a giant swing and spinner with centrifugal powers up to 4G, and the Condor 2GH in which riders, seated in a ring, are spun around at high speed. promenade. A Danish icon inspired by one of the colorful tales of Hans Christian Andersen, this bronze statue is surprisingly small. Created by Danish-Icelandic sculptor Edvard Eriksen, it’s only 1.25 meters tall but weighs 175 kilos. Another landmark worth visiting is the stunning Copenhagen Opera House designed by Henning Larsen, one of the most modern concert halls in the world. As far as dining, there is a bounty of options for any budget. Lively taverns serving mostly beer and smoked herring abound. If you fancy something a little more sophisticated, there are plenty of restaurants that will more than satisfy. My favorite is Marv & Ben, located downtown on 4 Snaregade Street, where genuine Danish gastronomy is served in an elegant and intimate dining room. An eclectic menu of delicious fish like the zander with kohlrabi and cockles or the succulent grilled pork

The Kong Arthur is a good alternative for those seeking the comforts of a

e live in a world where we are increasingly subjected to synthetic fragrances, they are even making their way into our A/C units and unfortunately, in an effort to make our environment smell better, our immune systems are taking the strain. We should be aware that the synthetic fragrances that are found in most perfumes, lotions, soaps and cleaning products have been shown to contain up to 95% petroleum products. Would you knowingly rub petrol/ gasolene by-products on to your skin? Any product that you rub onto your skin will also be fairly rapidly absorbed into the blood stream. Many of the chemicals found in these products have been linked to allergies, cancer, birth defects and problems in the central nervous system. Essential oils make a good solution Essential oils, used for centuries, are completely natural and are extracted from the leaves, barks, stems, petals and roots of plants. They offer a great alternative for those looking for a way to add scent into their lives. Not only do these oils smell good but each plant has extensive therapeutic qualities as well as a different “note”. There are three distinct notes - top, middle and base. Top notes are more stimulating and are used when we need energy or a clear mind, a middle note has a balancing effect, often affecting the digestive system and a base note is used when we need to be calmed, grounded and perhaps to help us to sleep. Just as we should be aware of the quality of food that we eat we should also be aware of the quality of the oils that we purchase - if you are buying oils make sure that they are pure and unadulterated. My preferred ones are doTerra since they are CPTG or certified, pure, therapeutic grade and many are safe to be used internally as well as aromatically and topically. Probably one of the most well known and used oils is lavender oil and with good reason. The qualities of this oil are vast and it is generally recognized to be safe to use on everyone including babies and pregnant women. As a cautionary note we should use Lavandula angustifolia or officinalis since Spanish and spike lavender need

Pear & Gorgonzola Pie Tarta de Pera y Gorgonzola Makes 1 10” pie Prep time: 2.5 hrs Cook time: 45 minutes This pie is both sweet and savory, interjected with little taste “speed bumps” in the form of walnuts, spices and raisins. This is much more than a “regular” pie. It has depth. This is NOT a pie for the faint of heart. Or mind. You need to sit down with it, fork in hand, and absorb all the smells, flavors and textures, gradually taking it all in. You can’t read or watch TV mindlessly while gnawing on a hunk. Dive in with your whole self and see what’s inside. Ingredients Crust 2 cups Spelt Flour (you can use regular flour) 1 tsp salt 1 Tsp sugar 2/3 cup butter 1 egg yolk Filling 3 Tbsp of Colavita Olive Oil, 1 Tbsp of butter 1/4 cup of coconut sugar (or regular white sugar) 6 Bosc pears ½ cup golden raisins 1 Tbsp cornstarch dissolved in 2 Tbsp cold water 1 tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp nutmeg 1 tsp cardamom Gorgonzola cheese (only you can know how much is enough) 1 egg white (for brushing the top of the pie) ½ cups candied walnuts: 1 tbsp Colavita Olive Oil 1 ½ cups walnuts 2 tbsp maple syrup 1 tbsp fresh thyme 1 tsp cinnamon ½ tsp ground nutmeg ½ tsp ground cardamom pinch of sea salt Process: For the crust: Mix the flour, salt and sugar in a food processor. Add the butter and pulse until the texture is grainy. Mix egg yolk with 2 tablespoons cold

water. Gradually add to the dough. Chill for at least 1 hour. This can be made 1 day ahead and kept in the fridge. For the filling: Make the candied walnuts first. Heat 1 tbsp Colavita Olive Oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the walnuts and the maple syrup, tossing to combine. Continue to heat, adding in all the remaining spices. Cook for a total of 8 minutes until the walnuts are toasted and all the spices are incorporated. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Once cooled, pulse in a food processor just a few times to break them up into smaller pieces. Next, prepare the pears: Peel and slice the pears. Place Colavita Olive Oil, butter and sugar in a saucepan and cook over medium heat until caramelized. Add pears and raisins and cook for about 7 - 10 minutes stirring to keep the sugar melted. Dilute cornstarch in 3 tablespoons water and add to pear mixture. Cook until thick. Remove from heat and add all the spices. Let cool. Assembly: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Roll out your dough and line a 8” springform deep dish pan with the dough. Add about half the pear filling. Crumble the gorgonzola cheese and place crumbles into evenly throughout the pears. Scatter some of the walnut mixture along the top. Repeat with the rest of the pear filling, adding more gorgonzola cheese as well. Finish with the rest of the walnut mixture on top. Roll out the remaining dough on a floured surface to about ¼”thick. Using a sharp knife or pastry rotary knife, cut the dough into ½” strips. Place the strips over the top of the pie in a criss-cross pattern. Press the ends of the strips into the edges of the pie to seal them. Using a pastry brush, brush the egg white along the lattice work of the pie. Bake until pastry is golden and top is golden - about 45 minutes - 1 hour. * Note #1: For the filling, you must caramelize the sugar (it will turn brown). When you add the pears, the sugar will harden, but it will become liquid again as the pears heat up. ** Note #2: For the crust, the less you handle it with your fingers the flakier the crust will be. You can roll out the dough between 2 pieces of wax paper if you like. If you dampen the counter top underneath the wax paper, the paper will not slip as you roll the dough.

Añada la mantequilla y pulse hasta obtener una textura granulosa. Mezcle la yema del huevo con dos cucharadas de agua y añada a la masa. Enfrie durante una hora por lo menos. Este paso lo puede hacer un dia antes guardando la masa en la nevera. Relleno: Prepare primero las nueces confitadas. Caliente una cucharada de Aceite de Oliva Colavita a fuego medio. Añada las nueces y el sirope de arce mezclando bien. Mientras, añada las especias. Caliente durante 8 minutos hasta que las nueces estén bien tostadas y se hayan incorporado bien las especias. Apague y deje enfriar. Uno vez enfriadas las nueces, colóquelas en el procesador para cortarlas en trozos pequeños. Preparación de las peras Pele y corte las peras en láminas finas. Ponga el Aceite de Oliva Colavita, la mantequilla y el azúcar en una sartén a calor medio hasta que se convierta en caramelo. Añada las peras y las uvas pasas y cocine unos 7 a 10 minutos removiendo para mantener el azúcar líquido. Diluya la fécula de maíz en 3 cucharadas de agua y añada a las peras. Cocine hasta espesar. Retire del fuego y añada las especias. Deje enfriar. Caliente el horno a 350 grados. Extienda la masa sobre una forma de 8 pulgadas. Incorpore la mitad del relleno de pera. Rocíe de manera uniforme la mezcla con la gorgonzola desmigada. Esparza las nueces confitadas por encima y cubra con el resto de la mezcla de peras añadiendo más gorgonzola. Para terminar incorpore el resto de las nueces. Extienda el resto de la masa que ha de tener un grosor de 1/4 de pulgada. Corte en tiras de 1/2 pulgada. Coloque las tiras entrecruzadas sobre la tarta. Presione los bordes de las tiras para que se peguen al borde de la tarta. Con una brocha de repostería cubra la masa con la clara del huevo. Hornee hasta que quede dorado, unos 45 minutos a 1 hora. Para el relleno, tendrá que caramelizar el azúcar. Cuando añada las peras, el azúcar endurecerá pero volverá a quedar líquido una vez que las peras se calienten. Para la masa, cuánto menos la manipule con sus dedos mejor queda. Puede extenderla entre dos hojas de papel encerado si quiere. Si humedece la encimera debajo del pápel no resbalará.

on’t you wish sometimes that your VHF was more like your Smartphone? Perhaps Raymarine is onto something with their new modular VHF radio systems. While it’s not a smartphone, it is a cordless VHF, which is a big improvement on the coiled cord radio handsets that have had us tied to the helm. The new Ray90 and Ray91 modular VHF radios give you freedom to roam about the boat and still communicate using optional wireless handset stations. The system comes with a commercial-grade radio transceiver with up to two fixed handsets (one via the head unit and another via an optional second wired station) using a traditional coiled cord. You can add up to three wireless handsets, which are DSC-equipped for convenience and safety, meaning they come with an onboard GPS receiver and a jack for an externally mounted GPS antenna. They also have a built-in automatic identification system, and N2K/MNEA0183 networking support. Want more? Both the Ray90 and the Ray91 are also fitted with a fogsignal generator activated via an optional hailing horn (my fellow Bay Area boaters will appreciate this!), and a built-in loudhailer with 30-watts of audio output, plus 2-way talkback.
