e’ve heard over and over lately how crazy Americans have become about boats of all types and sizes. It makes sense, as boating is a great way to enjoy the outdoors in the company of one’s family, while feeling safe from the pandemic. A friend of mine owns a catamaran here in Biscayne Bay, and I was invited aboard several afternoons during these past few months. I relished the thrill of going out on a boat, removing my mask, forgetting for a while about flattening curves and contagious rates, breathing in the summer breeze, going in for a swim, and then watching the sunset over the horizon with a drink in my hand while waiting for the barbecue to be ready. A superb experience I could happily repeat over and over again, like millions of boaters around the country. Chartering a yacht or buying a boat - whether it’s a jet-ski, a kayak, a dinghy, a sailboat or a yacht, seems like a smart choice right now. During this time of social isolation, there are not that many activities one could do that are adventurous and exciting, and being on the water is definitely one of them.

| 10 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

A Bird’s Eye View of the Herreshoff Classic Regatta Text & Photos by NANCY BLOOM

M

any of the sailing events this year were cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Herreshoff Classic Regatta was one sailing event that took place with strict local safety guidelines. Keeping my distance during the pandemic, I was able to get a bird’s-eye view of the scaled-back regatta at 500-feet above Narragansett Bay.

Classic yachts, many of them Herreshoff designs, competed in an annual race that started out with a feeder race from Newport to Bristol, Rhode Island, home of the Herreshoff Marine Museum. Outlier (Harvey Jones), won the CRF Division; Aquila (Geoff Davis), won the S Class Division; and Mugsy (Jay Kolyer), won the Catboat Division. total of 65 boats started the 2020 Ida Lewis Distance Race presented by Jeanneau America on Saturday August 15 in a building northeasterly that dished out 20-22 knots of breeze (and a few knock-down gusts) throughout most of the day and into the evening and overnight. By the time racing had finished for two offshore classes (IRC and PHRF Doublehanded) and three inshore classes (PHRF Aloha, PHRF Coronet and PHRF Cruising Spinnaker), 16 boats had

retired; however, plenty of teams were left to beam about their accomplishments, each one crossing the finish line in Newport Harbor, near where they started, and receiving – no matter what the hour – a congratulatory bottle of Zardetto Prosecco delivered to them on the water by Ida Lewis Yacht Club volunteers. Taiwan No. 1 Yacht Manufacturing Nation in Asia Defiant Growth Against Global Headwinds

T

aiwan is surrounded by sea, and has been dependent upon the ocean through its history. Such privileged natural conditions also have led the marine industry chain to a bustling development. In recent years, the government has greatly supported the shipbuilding industry and national manufacturing of yachts; the latter has earned Taiwan particular distinction. Despite facing competition from traditional yacht manufacturers in countries like Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands, Taiwan has become the sixthlargest manufacturing nation in the world and the first in Asia thanks to its superyachts (yachts over 24 meters in length). Q1 to Q3 2019 saw export profits of US$186 million. Many of Taiwan’s yacht exports’ have been to the US, mainly Florida. In 2019, Florida imported a total of $826.7 million in yachts from around the world, of which $138.5 million were directly imported from Taiwan. The Taiwan International Boat Show is held in Kaohsiung biannually. In 2018, it attracted over 20,000 visitors and buyers from over thirty countries, most of which came from China, USA, Korea, Japan, and Singapore. Thus, it can be considered an international yacht show of importance to the AsiaPacific region. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 show has been postponed to March 10th through 13th, 2022.Despite several factors that contributed to a slight drop in global yacht demand in 2019, Taiwan yacht brands still achieved considerable breakthroughs thanks to their customized design, professional woodwork, advanced material

R&D, and an agile and highly efficient supply chain. Take Horizon Yachts – winner of the Taiwan Excellence Award – as an example. In 2019, its annual revenue grew by 14.3%, making it the 9th largest superyacht manufacturer in the world – up two places from 2018. The 28th Taiwan Excellence Awards Selection was organized by the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economic Affairs and implemented by TAITRA. An 80foot luxury motor yacht from Horizon Yachts and the Monte Fino V76 from Kha Shing Ent. (with self-owned brand Monte Fino Yachts) stood out as the only two yacht winning products during this edition. Moreover, Monte Fino V76 took the award upon its first submission this year. Kha Shing Ent. and famous British designer Humphreys collaborated in the Monte Fino V76 project. With a sleek design that combines a luxurious and imposing brand image, Monte Fino V76 defies and surpasses the poise of 100-ft yachts. Taiwan Excellence uses diverse marketing methods to enhance industrial advertising and increases in-depth coverage. It leverages its social media accounts, online platform promotion, and international media publicity in different locations to strengthen the Taiwanese yacht industry image of excellence and international branding in Europe, the Americas, and the New Southbound markets: Southeast Asia and Australasia. anerai continues its relentless pursuit of novel applications for materials. The rare combination of innovation and tradition defies convention, Panerai expands the dimensions of its collection of diving instruments with an offering that combines two innovative materials for the first time: Panerai GoldtechTM and CarbotechTM. Though seemingly antithetical, the pairing is surprisingly complementary in the Submersible GoldtechTM - 44 mm (PAM01070). Conceived to realize its full potential in extreme conditions, and tailored to the specific requirements of diving, the Submersible GoldtechTM - 44 mm is configured as a highly reliable tool able to withstand high pressure thanks to features like a unidirectional

rotating bezel and screwed caseback. Luminescent indexes, hands and dots in green/blue are immediately legible underwater. High quality mechanics contribute to the model’s reliability, accuracy and precision, all functional contributions thanks to the P.900 Caliber. The next-generation movement was designed and developed entirely by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. Notably for a watch of its diameter and thickness (4.2mm), it combines a date indication and three-day power reserve. Water resistant up to 30 bar (about 300 meters deep) the new Submersible GoldtechTM - 44 mm features a black rubber strap and a trapezoidal pin buckle in titanium with black DLC coating. An additional strap composed of Panerai SportechTM in black with ecru stitching also accompanies the watch, along with a screwdriver for removing the buckle and a box made from recycled plastic.

Private yacht excursions take over luxury travel Text & Image courtesy of Exclusive Resorts

W

ith coronavirus outbreaks leaving once die-hard cruisers scarred and the CDC’s recommendation that people defer traveling on cruise ships due to the high risk of contracting COVID-19, thalassophiles have turned to a more socially-distanced (and luxurious) alternative: private yachts. Due to the pandemic, interest in private travel and membership-based clubs has skyrocketed, as they offer enhanced cleanliness standards, privacy and flexibility. Elite vacation club Exclusive Resorts, for example, has seen multiple new member sign-ups since March despite travel restrictions. In addition to 400+ private vacation Residences worldwide, The Club offers personalized, once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences like its ever-popular private yacht excursions, which accommodate up to 8 people and sell out every year. These safe sanctuaries at sea provide extreme privacy and safety from COVID-19, allowing people peace of mind while reconnecting with families, friends and others within their circles of trust. The Club just announced dates for its summer 2021 yacht experiences, including itineraries in The Bahamas and the Virgin Islands.

Featuring the patented and revolutionary low-drag Amfihull design, the Hermes Speedster exhibits superb acceleration and on-water performance by maintaining a nearly horizontal attitude throughout the planing-mode speed range. Moreover, the Speedster’s low center of gravity provides great on-water handling as well as class-leading vessel stability underway. At rest, the Speedster boasts an incredibly low side inclination of just 7 degrees with 1000lbs of weight on one side. Watertight compartments generating positive buoyancy make the Speedster unsinkable. Eco-friendly by virtue of an exceptionally low fuel consumption of almost 8 miles per US gallon, the Speedster is quick to come on plane. Acceleration and handling are both impressive and exhilarating. The Hermes Speedster is powered by the Rotax 1503 NA 155hp by BRP - the same engine that powers the top-of-the-line See-Doo watercraft and with service points available worldwide. For a fully green, zero emissions package the Hermes Speedster is also available with electric propulsion. Based in the UK, Seven Seas Yachts was founded in 2011. Production facilities are located in Greece. The company launched its first yacht, the Legend 54, in 2012 which was followed soon thereafter by the Legend 56 Fly and the Hermes GranTurismo. del equipamiento estándar. Con sede en el Reino Unido, Seven Seas Yachts se fundó en 2011 y sus instalaciones de producción se encuentran en Grecia. hen you think of Hawaii and the Pacific Ocean, you’re most likely to picture gigantic waves and worldrenowned surfing – and surfers. But there’s a different side to this exotic island. One that is perhaps less sought after, but just as amazing – at least for people like me who aren’t even capable of standing on a surfboard: Hawaii’s underwater world. On the west coast of the archipelago, softer coast lines, quiet waters and turquoise blue coves offer the perfect set up for memorable snorkeling and diving experiences. You’ll find great snorkeling spots in every Hawaiian island, but if I had to pick one, I would go for Big Island where the variety of fauna and the coast lines are just mind blowing. The rough volcanic coast of Hilo on the East side, with its sharp black lava rocks and tormented waters, is an unexpected prelude to the peaceful spectacle of Kona: crystalline and gentle white sandy beaches: the ideal place to put on your mask and observe the myriad of colorful fish in an idyllic setting. Kona is also known for the huge manta rays that come out at night to swim along the coast, and there are many dive and snorkeling options to check out this veritable spectacle. Attracted by plankton glowing on our torches’ lights, they

CRUISING & TRAVEL | CRUCEROS Y VIAJES approach us by the dozens, gracefully “flying” around with their gigantic wings. Pure magic! A bit scary too. Even though they are completely harmless, they’ll knock you down just by swinging their wings as they fight their way towards big clouds of plankton. This is a unique experience, definitely recommended to any snorkeler/diver. South of Kona is the unexpected snorkel paradise in the national park of Pu’uhonua O Hnaunau. No white sand beach there but only black rocks. It’s worth adventuring off the rough path of lava crust towards the water and hurting your feet a bit to see the spectacle of millions of little yellow fish swimming around you in 200 ft visibility water due to the absence of sand and residue. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a few turtles as well.

CRUISING & TRAVEL | CRUCEROS Y VIAJES Sea turtles are just everywhere in Hawaii, and it’s not unusual to swim along one of those big creatures while snorkeling. Black Rock Beach near Kaanapali Beach, in Maui, is known to be a great snorkeling spot, and, sure enough, amongst plenty of other big and colorful fish there, you’re almost certain to cross paths with giant turtles – I’ve spotted a few every time I’ve been there. Another great spot in Maui to see bright fish, in high concentration, mingling with turtles is Kapalua Beach. The beach forms a small, calm cove that is protected from the wind and heavy currents. My final recommendation would be the beach of Poipu in Kauai. This “double” beach offers a unique sanctuary of bright and stunning fish. So many that you think you’re swimming inside the most crowded fish tank in an aquarium. My favorite ones are the pufferfish that inflate like a ball when they feel threatened. Very shallow and right by the shore, this is also a great spot for kids. The options for good snorkeling out there are endless. In other words, it doesn’t matter which Island you visit: you won’t be disappointed when putting your head underwater, and you will most likely want to come back! en aguas de visibilidad de 200 pies debido a la ausencia de arena y residuos. He visto algunas cada vez que he estado allí.

hen discussing the American Revolutionary War, one will find that most people are aware of the fact that France was an invaluable ally to the Continental Army throughout the conflict. What most people are not aware of, however, is Spain’s equally large and important contribution to the war effort in both the American and European theatres. The Spanish Empire not only contributed a great number of supplies to ease tensions on the Continental Army’s supply chains, but also provided soldiers and ships which directly fought and participated in the war effort. Within Spain, however, it could be said that the greatest benefactor and contributor to the war effort was the Basque Country. Situated in the northeast of Spain, along France’s border, the Basque Country is known for its rich naval history, along with having perpetually been one of the most industrialized regions of Spain. Both of these factors are what made the Basques a valuable ally to

the Continental Army, and by extension to the United States which was then known as the 13 Colonies. The Basque Country, having been a longstanding trade partner with the American Colonies, decided to help by assisting in the production of Continental Army uniforms, armaments and weaponry, along with providing various frigates and sloops for use in naval battles. In total, the Basque House of Gardoqui provided loans to the American patriots which supplied them with 215 bronze cannons, 30,000 muskets, 30,000 bayonets, 51,314 musket balls, 300,000 pounds of powder, 12,868 grenades, 30,000 uniforms, and 4,000 field tents during the war. Several thousand Basque soldiers enlisted in the Spanish Imperial Army also fought as allies of the Continental Army in various key battles such as the Battle of Fort Bute, the Battle of Pensacola, and the Siege of Yorktown. In honor of Spain’s contribution, the city of Galveston, Texas was named after Spanish Basque General and Governor of Louisiana, Bernardo de Gálvez. This sustained assistance from the Basque Country and Spain as a whole likely eased a great deal of pressure off the backs of Continental Army leaders and greatly facilitated the Revolutionary Army’s victory.
