he 41st Annual IYRS (International Yacht Restoration School) Newport Classic Yacht Regatta brought classic yachts from around the world to Newport, Rhode Island for a day of competition and camaraderie in the sailing capital of the United States. In spite of the pandemic, this year’s regatta was a huge success thanks to participant owners, skippers, crews, the Regatta Chair Jens Lange (IYRS ‘10), PRO Peter Gerard, Bill O’Hanley & the Ida Lewis Yacht Club Race Committee, and to Jamie Hilton’s expertise and support.

The 166th Edition of North America’s Oldest Annual Regatta Text & Photos by NANCY BLOOM

T

he Annual Regatta was first sailed on the Hudson River in 1846. A similar competition the previous year was called a Trial of Speed. With a few exceptions for world wars and other global crises, the event has been held every year since. For the majority of its existence, the New York Yacht Club held its Annual Regatta on waters close to New York City. Since 1988, however, the event has been sailed out of the Harbour Court Clubhouse in Newport,

Rhode Island, and has settled into the current three-day format, which includes a race around Conanicut Island and two days of buoy racing or navigator-course racing. The 166th Annual Regatta, which is sponsored by Hammetts Hotel and Helly Hansen, gathered almost 100 boats, and also included the 2020 Melges IC37 National Championship.

2020 NYYC Race Week at Newport Presented by Rolex Text & Photos by NANCY BLOOM

T

he NYYC’s Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex has become a favorite of sailors because of its combination of superb racing conditions on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound and the unmatched on-shore hospitality at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court. This year all competing yachts raced at the same time. Different course configurations and sailing areas, such as buoy racing and mid-distance courses, made the week lively for competitors, while the Stadium Sailing allowed spectators to watch the racing from Fort Adams. Winning the three classes at Race Week were Vesper, skippered by David Team (Newport Beach, Calif.), in ORC 1; Impetuous, skippered by Paul Zabetakis (Jamestown, R.I.) in ORC 2, and Blazer II, skippered by Christopher Culver (Newport, R.I.) in the Melges IC37 class. Both Culver and Team earned a Rolex Steel and Yellow Gold Submariner Date for their outstanding performances on the water during the regatta.

ecycled art is nothing new, but it certainly takes a unique dimension when it comes to Manuel Couceiro’s work. As an experimental artist, Uruguayan sculptor Couceiro transforms used objects into spectacular works of art. His mission: to create eco-friendly art with a vision to the future. It all began when Couceiro fell in love with the art of welding. Following his passion, he became a weldor by trade and began to develop his own techniques to produce environmentally sound ornaments and anthropomorphic sculptures with used materials. “I felt an urge to give a second life to the objects I found around my house,” he explains. Couceiro uses mainly recycled glass, metal and wood to skillfully create contemporary sculptures that meticulously convey movement and balance, many of which have garnered attention around the world. In 2009, while living in Spain, he was awarded first place in Reciclarte, an international recycled artwork competition in Huelva, with the sensuous sculpture of a wave crest created with hundreds of green glass fragments held together by a mesh of motorcycle chains called Marea Verde (Green Sea). “The luminosity of its green interior represents the color of hope,” Couceiro explains. “The idea behind this project was mainly to raise awareness about the environment and the endless possibilities of using recycled materials to create art.” In 2010, Couceiro became a finalist at the Iberian Sculpture Award

Exhibit in Serpa, Portugal with 1976, a large-scale steel and glass winged dragon morphed into a snake, which represents the combination of his and his father’s birth year according to the Chinese horoscope. In 2011, Couceiro returned to his native Uruguay. He moved to the countryside and took odd jobs to make ends meet. While repairing fences, he used the discarded wood posts to keep creating art on the side. “I couldn’t believe people were using wood to simply burn,” he says. “I saw every piece as a treasure so I began to make furniture, tables and lamps.” Then came Imagomundiart in 2015, a global initiative that curates the work of emerging artists from around the world. This time, Couceiro created El Pensador, a small statue made with the inner bark of the Tabebuia tree, inspired by August Rodin’s iconic work The Thinker. Couceiro likes to describe it as the man searching for solutions, looking ahead. “I could’ve also called it the dreamer,” he adds. Unsurprisingly, the small wooden wonder became part of the permanent collection at the Benetton Foundation in Venice, Italy. ast October, The Peru to the World Expo 2020 (PTWE), held its ninth yearly event of curated traditional Peruvian gastronomic fare in East Hampton, New York. The celebration took place at the luxurious gardens of The Baker House 1650, strictly adhering to all the safety protocols. At the same time, organizers made the official U.S. introduction of Marina Coast Peru (MCP), a luxury living and yachting community in northern Peru. The annual Taiwan Excellence Awards, established by the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan in 1993, subjects eligible candidates to a rigorous and stringent selection system that covers the fours aspects of “R&D”, “Design”, “Quality” and “Marketing” in order to identify outstanding products that offer “Innovative Value”. The Horizon FD102 stood out over more than a thousand products this year with its innovation in all of the above four aspects as recognized by 140 jurors from Taiwan and around the world. I

n 1565, the Basque whaling ship San Juan was about to set sail from Labrador in Newfoundland when it dissappeared and would not be seen again for over four hundred years. The fiftytwo foot, two hundred and forty ton nao, a three-masted carrack, was making ready for its voyage back home to the Basque port of Pasaia (Guipuzkoa, Spain) with a cargo of whale oil. As the San Juan made final preparations for departure, the ship’s anchor cable parted in a violent storm, casting the ship adrift. The vessel was swiftly swallowed under the waves and sank to the ten-metre-deep seabed. It was thanks precisely to the frigid sea temperatures that the San Juan remained largely intact for four centuries. In 1978, Parks Canada’s Department of Underwater Archaeology carried out excavations in the sea around Red Bay. After days of work, one of the divers surfaced to exclaim, ‘I think there is something here.’ Indeed, what the team eventually uncovered was | 32 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

n 1565, el ballenero vasco San Juan, estaba a punto de zarpar desde la isla de Labrador en Canadá, cuando desapareció y no se volvería a ver por más de cuatrocientos años. La nao de cincuenta y dos pies de quilla y doscientas cuarenta toneladas de peso, una carraca de tres mástiles, se estaba preparando para su viaje de regreso al puerto vasco de Pasaia en Gipuzkoa,España con un cargamento de aceite de ballena. Mientras se hacían los preparativos finales para su partida, el cable del ancla del San Juan se partió en una violenta tormenta, dejándolo a la deriva. the San Juan, buried under a thick layer of ballast stones and sediment, its hull split open like one of the whales it had come to hunt. ‘They proceeded to dismantle the vessel, piece by piece, some three thousand items in all,’ says Xabier Agote, chairman of the Albaola Shipyard-Museum in Pasaia, where an exact replica of Canada’s oldest shipwreck is being built. The San Juan stood as the world’s most important reconstruction of a sixteenth-century commercial ship and, in 1990, it became the official symbol of UNESCO’s Underwater Cultural Heritage. Twenty-three years later, Red Bay itself was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in recognition of the decades of work in bringing to light one of the most significant pages in Basque maritime history. “I was eighteen years old when I decided to become a shipwright,” says Agote. “I went to the US for an apprenticeship at the Maine Maritime Museum, with the objective of learning to build wooden ships. It was an enriching experience, as I also learned to appreciate the world’s maritime traditions. This is what gave me the inspiration to build a replica of the San Juan.”

Agote founded Albaola in 1997 as a non-profit cultural association. Together with a team of carpenters, he set up temporary headquarters in a small shipyard in Pasaia. The regional government of Guipúzcoa offered Albaola a large disused dry dock at the extreme end of the port, which today is the site of a visitable shipyard-museum called Albaola, The Sea Factory of The Basque. In 2014, under UNESCO’s patronage, they began to work on the construction of a full-scale replica of the San Juan. Presently, with the building process well advanced, visitors will be able to witness the final stages of construction during the next few years, before the San Juan sails to America as a faithful replica of a 16th-century ship without any of today’s technologies (engine, electricity or modern comforts). The San Juan is not the only project visitors will find at Albaola. The association has set up Aprendiztegi, an international shipwright training school for the construction of historic vessels. Each year, six trainees are accepted to a free three-year tuition course. All that is required is enthusiasm and motivation. Albaola is seeking private funding to continue offering free tuition. reece is one of those charter destinations that begs for repeat visits. Having cruised there three times already, I can’t wait to return because on each charter, I find something new and gorgeous. My last trip with Navigare Yachting was no exception. We chartered from Agios Kosmas Marina, not too far south from the port of Piraeus outside of Athens. Our Navigare Sun Odyssey 519, Misty, was ready and waiting at the dock, completely spotless. Our welcome at the base was enthusiastic as we had three fun and knowledgeable locals at our disposal. We loaded only barebones provisions, which in Greece always consist of olives, tomatoes, pounds of feta and multiple bottles of local wine. There’s no need to overbuy on a Greek charter because the provisioning opportunities are many and the tavernas beckon like sirens from the shore. I love recommendations by locals since they never disappoint and our base guys were eager to share insights. With their guidance, I pointed Misty’s bow toward Spetses Island to the southwest and then to Navplion (also spelled Nafplio and Nauplion) at the top of the Argolic Gulf.

Después de haber navegado a sus costas tres veces, no puedo esperar para regresar porque en cada crucero, encuentro algo nuevo y hermoso. Mi último viaje con Navigare Yachting no fue la excepción. Comenzamos nuestro chárter en el puerto deportivo de Agios Kosmas, al sur del puerto de Pireo a las afueras de Atenas. Misty, nuestro Navigare Sun Odyssey 519, nos esperaba listo e impecable en compañia de tres simpáticos y expertos lugareños que se pusieron a nuestra disposición. Cargamos solo provisiones básicas, que en Grecia suele consistir en aceitunas, tomates, kilos de queso feta y varias botellas de vino local. No hay necesidad de comprar en exceso en un chárter griego porque las oportunidades de aprovisionamiento son muchas y las tabernas nos seducen como sirenas desde la orilla. Me encantan las recomendaciones de los lugareños ya que nunca decepcionan y nuestros muchachos de base estaban ansiosos por compartir ideas. Con su guía, apunté la proa de Misty hacia la isla Spetses al suroeste y luego hacia Navplion (también deletreado Nafplio y Nauplion) en la cima del Golfo Argólico.


beam reach through Kolpos Idras or Hydra Gulf. We pulled into the miniscule harbor of Spetses Island at dusk with a storm behind us. The harbor is a mix of private yachts, commercial boats and fishing craft and it shoals to four feet the farther back you go. I read the guides but remained nervous as we glided in. Finally, not having the stomach to run aground, I did a U-turn and headed back out to the bay to drop anchor with the other cruisers. We made it just before the storm rolled through. Ashore, we heard the hooves of horses pulling carriages from one end of town to the other. We dinghied to a stone quay and followed directions to Liotrivi, a seafood restaurant that was recommended by the base. I had no idea that Spetses is a gastronomic hub with dozens of specialty eateries bunched together in a tiny town. Liotrivi is spectacular with an unmatched waterside setting and old school impeccable service. That said, every café and restaurant we passed was postcard-worthy – with candlelit charm and mouthwatering aromas on the breeze. No wonder the beautiful people of Athens hop on their yachts or the ferry to come weekend here. In the morning, we explored the other side of town but instead of taking a carriage, we walked along the quay where fishermen mended their nets. We headed to the house of local heroine, Laskarina Bouboulina, a commander in the War

Lo logramos justo antes de que la tormenta llegara. En tierra, se escuchaban los cascos de los caballos que tiraban de carruajes por toda la ciudad. Nos dirigimos en nuestro bote auxiliar hasta un muelle de piedra, y luego seguimos las indicaciones hacia Liotrivi, un restaurante de marisco que nos habían recomendado en la base. No tenía idea de que Spetses era un centro gastronómico con docenas de restaurantes especializados agrupados en tal pequeña localidad. Liotrivi es espectacular con un entorno incomparable junto al agua y un servicio impecable de la vieja escuela. Dicho esto, cada café y restaurante que pasamos era digno de postal con su encanto a la luz de las velas y sus deliciosos aromas envueltos por la brisa. Bouboulina was born in a Constantinople prison but rose to the rank of admiral and the museum is housed in the 300-year-old mansion that served as her home on Spetses. Bouboulina died in a family duel four years after her command. What a colorful personality right through to her demise. After learning more about the woman who was fast becoming my muse and a nutritious lunch of ice cream, we headed back to the boat, raised anchor and set our course north, up the Argolic directly into a light breeze. Navplion It was a long motor in a light breeze to Navplion but soon enough we Med moored on the quay below the imposing fortress of Palamidi, which hangs over the town below. This behemoth was built by the Venetians during their occupation of the Peloponnese Peninsula in the early 1700s. It’s commanding and mesmerizing at the same time. Up for a bit of exercise, we braved the thousand steps it takes to reach it. (A bus runs up as well for those who are less foolish.) That night we strolled through the town’s maze of galleries and shops, listened to street musicians and had a delicious fish dinner. The following day we rented a car and drove north. Greece is wonderful but can be challenging, especially by car. There are multiple ways to spell every Greek town or island name. Just to make it more confusing, the old town on every island is

Navplion Fue un largo trayecto hacia Navplion, pero pronto atracamos al estilo Med en el muelle del puerto costero, debajo de la majestuosa fortaleza de Palamidi que se cierne sobre la ciudad. Este gigante, construido por los venecianos durante su ocupación de la península del Peloponeso a principios del siglo XVIII, es imponente y a la vez fascinante. called Hora or Chora and street names are written in the Greek alphabet so navigation on water is actually easier than on land. With only a few wrong turns, we arrived at the archaeological sites of Mycenae and Tiryns. These ruins from the 15th to the 12th century BC were two cities at the heart of Mycenaen society, which is linked to Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. What has been preserved and/or rebuilt onsite is exceptional. If you can get away from the busloads of tourists, which pulse through the place from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, you may just settle into a feeling of awe, contemplating the civilization that ruled here so many years ago. It was blazing on the barren hill so once we descended, we set sights on Epidavros (also Epidaurus) only about 40 miles to the east, tucked into a scrappy pine forest. The asclepeion at Epidavros was a celebrated healing center for wealthy patrons. The actual medicine of the time was a mix of mineral spring baths, exercise and a dose of Greek mythology. People came from miles around in hopes of being cured of whatever ailed them. To find out the nature of their illness, they spent the night in the enkoimeteria, the sleeping hall. In their dreams, the god Asclepius would advise on their course of treatment. The focus of the whole complex was on physical exercise in the stadium and relaxation in the well-preserved amphitheater used for dramatic performances. The stone theater is world renowned for its design and famous for its perfect acoustics. It can seat 14,000 spectators and is still used for performances today.

Para hacerlo más confuso, el casco antiguo de cada isla se llama Hora o Chora y, por supuesto, los nombres de las calles están escritos en el alfabeto griego, por lo que la navegación en el agua es mucho más fácil que en tierra. Con solo unos pocos giros incorrectos, llegamos a los sitios arqueológicos de Micenas y Tiryns. Dos ruinas, que datan del periodo comprendido entre los siglos XV y XII a. CRUISING & TRAVEL | CRUCEROS Y VIAJES It’s funny how advanced the Greeks were. Already back then, they knew that good health requires minimal stress and a revitalized spirit. I grew envious of all who partook of this ancient spa. Heading Home It was time to return so I set course toward Athens via Ermioni, a small seaside town on the Peloponnese mainland. This adorable village sits on a natural outcropping with water on three sides so it feels like an island. Its natural horseshoeshaped bay has a tiny inner harbor protected by a jetty but a more popular place to tie up is on the western side where waterfront taverans abound. Like all villages in Greece, Ermioni just begs to have its picture taken and you can’t really go wrong no matter where you point the lens. We walked from one side of town to the other via the pinewood park, led by our very own canine escort who took it upon himself to guide tourists around his home town. That night, it was wine on the quay and sunset over the water. The next morning we hiked the narrow streets up over the crown of the town and descended to the other side to visit Drougas bakery that serves fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee and every kind of Greek baked good under the sun. We lucked out and stumbled upon Ermioni’s weekly farmer’s market. From ladies’ lingerie to live chickens, it seems you can get it

De Vuelta A Casa Era hora de regresar, así que puse rumbo a Atenas a través de Ermioni, un pequeño pueblo costero en el continente del Peloponeso. Este adorable pueblo se encuentra en un afloramiento natural con agua en tres lados, por lo que se siente como una isla. Su bahía natural en forma de herradura tiene un pequeño puerto interior protegido por un embarcadero, pero un lugar más popular para amarrarse es en el lado occidental donde abundan las tabernas frente al mar. Navplion is seldom visited by charterers, but it’s a must see and a great launch site to some of the most important Peloponnese archeological sites. Spetses is a gem and the anchorage outside is large and comfortable in the right weather. Ermioni is popular with charter boats but since many are on a set itinerary, tying up there on a Thursday leaves mostly locals to talk to. Bliss. Heading farther from the maddening crowd takes a bit of deck time but in the case of Spetses and Navplion, it’s absolutely worth ever minute of getting there.

Rara vez pasan los barcos chárter por Navplion pero bien vale la pena su visita y además es un gran lugar para comenzar un crucero hacia algunos de los sitios arqueológicos más importantes del Peloponeso. Spetses es una joya y el fondeadero externo es amplio y cómodo cuando hace buen tiempo. Ermioni es popular entre los barcos de alquiler pero como muchos siguen un itinerario establecido, visitarlo un jueves nos deja libres a la mayoría de los locales con los que conversar. Felicidad total. Tuscan Grain Bowl Cuenco De Granos A La Toscana

I

n this Tuscan Grain Bowl, bright and fresh flavors of balsamic, Parmesan and pine nuts are combined with fresh vegetables and lean protein for a delicious grain bowl with Italian flare. Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 25 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients 2 boneless chicken breasts (8-10 oz.) - see note 1⁄4 cup Colavita olive oil, divided 1⁄4 cup Colavita balsamic vinegar, divided Salt and cracked pepper 2-3 Tbsp. chopped shallots 2 cloves garlic, slivered 2 cups of cherry tomatoes, halved 6 cups baby arugula or spinach 1⁄2 cup chicken broth 2 cups cooked farro Shaved Parmesan Toasted Pine nuts 1. In a medium bowl, combine 1 Tbsp. Colavita olive oil, 1 Tbsp. Colavita balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. Add chicken breast and coat with mixture, let stand 5 minutes. 2. Heat a medium sauté pan. Add chicken breasts and cook 7 minutes on one side, taking care not to move or touch the chicken while it cooks. Flip the breasts over and cook about 5-7 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. Remove and allow to rest for 3-5 minutes before slicing. 3. Deglaze pan with chicken broth and pour into a heat-proof bowl or measuring cup. 4. In the same sauté pan, add remaining colavita olive oil. Add the shallot and garlic and cook 1 minute over low heat. Add tomatoes and cook to heat through. Add arugula or spinach and cook just to wilt. Finish sauté with reserved chicken broth, remaining Colavita balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. 5. Divide farro among 4 bowls. Top each with sautéed vegetables, and thinly sliced chicken. Top with shaved Parmesan and toasted pine nuts. NOTE: Want to make this bowl vegetarian? Use Portobello mushrooms instead. Marinate in the same way as the chicken, sauté or grill 3 minutes per side, remove to a plate and slice for serving.

Tiempo de preparación: 15 minutos Tiempo de Elaboración: 25 minutos Cantidad: 4 porciones Ingredientes: 2 pechugas de pollo 1/4 taza de aceite de oliva Colavita 1/4 taza de vinagre balsámico Colavita Sal y pimienta fresca 2-3 cucharadas de chalotas picadas 2 dientes de ajo en láminas 2 tazas de tomate cherry cortado por la mitad 6 tazas de arúgula o espinaca tierna 1/2 taza de caldo de pollo 2 tazas de farro cocinado Queso parmesano en láminas Piñones tostados 1. En un cuenco mediano, combinar 1 cucharada de aceite de oliva Colavita, 1 cucharada de vinagre balsámico Colavita, sal y pimienta. Cubrir por completo las pechugas de pollo con esta mezcla y dejar reposar durante 5 minutos. 2. Calentar una sartén a fuego medio. Añadir las pechugas y dorar por un lado durante 7 minutos, sin tocarlas. Darles la vuelta y cocinar otros 5-7 minutos hasta que la temperatura interna alcance los 165 grados Farenheit. Retirar de la sartén y dejar reposar de 3 a 5 minutos antes de cortar en tajadas. 3. Desglasar la sartén con el caldo de pollo y verter en un cuenco a prueba de calor o en una taza medidora. 4. En la misma sartén, verter el resto de aceite de oliva Colavita. Añadir las chalotas y el ajo y cocinar durante 1 minuto a fuego bajo. Agregar los tomates y calentar bien. Añadir la arúgula o la espinaca y dejar cocinar hasta marchitar. 5. Dividir el farro entre los cuatro cuencos. Cubrir con los vegetales cocinados y el pollo en tajadas. Espolvorear con las láminas de queso parmesano y los piñones. Nota: Como alternativa vegetariana se puede usar el champiñón Portobello. Macerar de la misma manera que al pollo, cocinar por 3 minutos de cada lado en una sartén o plancha y cortar en tajadas antes de servir.
