AGENT’S VIEW TONY MOORFOOT \ Director, Buxton Highton Started out \ I got into property about 10 years ago, through my now business partner Ben Riddle. I started as his PA. I’d worked in hospitality for 10 years and ran Fisherman’s Pier for about seven of those. I needed a change and wanted to get out of hospitality and the weekend work that came with it. I’m still doing weekend work but I love what I’m doing. Best part of the job \ Meeting new people and the excitement when you strike a deal. It’s a genuine happiness and joy for people. Obviously we’re working for the vendor, so we want to … achieve an outcome they’re happy with. But we might also be selling to first-home buyers or to someone as their forever home, so it’s a really important time in people’s lives. Geelong’s property hot spot \ Anything in the 3216 postcode is going crazy; Belmont, Grovedale and Highton, particularly. There’s also really good value in 3215, like Hamlyn Heights, Herne Hill and Bell Post Hill. My favourite place \ I enjoy catching up with my good friends at the Sir Charles Hotham Hotel. It’s a great place for a quiet beer, to watch the footy and catch up. On days off I like to … spend time with family. I’ve got three beautiful children so I just enjoy being with them. Just nice, quiet family time. ●
COLOUR CODE SARAH MARINOS GETS EXPERT TIPS ON THE KEY COLOUR TRENDS HEADED OUR WAY
(BRICKWORKS)
There’s an art to defining what colours we’ll use in our homes in coming months. Kim Chadwick, director of Australian Trend Forecast, has worked in the colour forecasting arena for more than 30 years. Collaborating with manufacturers, builders and designers, Kim has helped prepare an overview of global architectural colour trends for the year ahead for Brickworks Building Products. “We cast a wide net when identifying colour trends,” says Kim. “We look at winning design awards, overseas trade shows and design fairs and see what is happening in fashion and homewares. We look at what colours people are using in ceramics, textiles, furniture and technology and we see what is happening in new-product development, sustainability and the economy.” So what are the key colour themes coming our way? Kim explains the ideas and inspirations. ●
G A I A’ S L A N D
▼ C AT ’ S C R A D L E
WHAT IS IT? Earthy shades of rust, bronze and green. Think citrine, antique gold, chestnut and petrol.
WHAT IS IT? Satin, greige – a cross between grey and beige – pebble and graphite tied together with slick, inky black.
THE HE VIBE \ These colours are about getting back to nature. It mimics nature’s shapes and patterns, such as the way a river curves. GOES WITH: Greens and natural products such as raw bricks, raw timber and masonry – the material is the hero.
top tip
Focus on natural materials such as raw brick and timber and natural patinas of ageing metal. Opt for a couch in warm grey with leather cushions in terracotta. Green monstera leaf patterning is big, and can be incorporated in rugs and cushions. ●
▲ DAW N I N G WHAT IS IT? Cool greys, taupes and duck egg with nude, soft peaches, apricot, blush, dusky pink and vibrant rose.
GOES WITH ITH \ Dawning colours go with greys and charcoals, with blonde timbers, raw natural timbers, oak and pastel colours.
top tip
Use shades of grey or peach for furniture and accessories such as cushions. Add a copper table or lamp. ●
WHAT IS IT? An elementary palette of sand, grey, biscuit, pearl and lava. THE HE VIBE \ Mono in this context means one material or colour dominates in a block. There are lots of square blocks in architecture at the moment – such as blocks of solid concrete mixed with one other colour or material to soften the bunker look.
GOES WITH ITH \ Metal-based tables and chair legs. Use it in bathrooms and kitchen splashbacks. Do a dark wall but lighten it up, for example a charcoal bathroom with greige cabinetry.
THE HE VIBE \ It’s about a new day, new frontiers and embracing new technology rather than being nostalgic. It fits in with homewares trends we’re seeing now, such as copper and new LED lighting technology that can change the mood of a room.
BEST EST SUITED TO \ These colours suit all architectural styles, particularly a light, bright home because they are slightly more feminine. They’re not as suitable for strong, dominant architecture.
MONO BLOCK
(PETER BENNETTS)
BEST SUITED TO: Mid-century modernist homes and ’70s-style houses with timber-lined ceilings. Also works well in homes that blend indoors and outdoors and that create a sense of being outside in nature.
THE HE VIBE \ This trend is named after the children’s string game that creates triangles and different shapes. A lot of commercial architecture is using this faceted, triangular interlocking design – from Federation Square to AAMI Park. It plays with light and shade.
BEST EST SUITED TO \ Modern homes and ’60s-style houses with breeze blocks (pictured). Also suits period homes such as an old Victorian with natural brick and heavy window frames.
top tip
These designs and colours are good to use in uneven tiled areas because they create shadows that disguise any inconsistencies. ●
GOES WITH ITH \ Mix mono block with a neutral palette, so blend concrete with timber or have red brick broken up with black or white. Grey concrete is a huge element in blocks because it’s edgy and modern – it’s the number one colour and material now. BEST EST SUITED TO \ Industrial, solid-style homes and contemporary houses made out of concrete or masonry blocks.
top tip
Use heavy, solid block-style furniture such as modular lounge suites. Blending white to black and grey is a major trend but don’t forget to add a highlight colour. ●

IT’S BEEN A TOUGH WEEK FOR THE BOYS BUT THEY’RE NOT GIVING UP
F
rom Style Kings to Lehman Brothers, the wolves of Ingles Street – Andy and Ben – have come crashing down. “We’re stuffed. We have no budget,” Andy says. They have no vouchers left at Reece, Mitre 10 or Beaumont Tiles and only $33,000 to finish the rest of the build. This week it’s crunch time for the hallway, laundry and powder room. But with typical “lad” chutzpah, the boys are not – make that never! – throwing in the towel. Instead, what they do throw down is the gauntlet: a winner-takes-all ping pong challenge to the richest men on The Block, Keith and Dan. It backfires. But the boys do get a much-needed boost for taking out the quiz on the Blockheads’ road trip to Tassie. At the room reveal, judge Neale Whitaker doesn’t hold back. “It feels horrible. This is not the entrance to a luxury apartment,” he says. “The space tells
me nothing about what to expect in the rest of the apartment.” Fellow judge Shaynna Blaze is equally disappointed: “It feels really cheap and nasty, and I’ve never said that about the boys.” The boys’ styling choices do not escape the judges. “Why would they would put such awful styling on a beautiful cabinet?” Neale says. That’s, ah, because Ben was put in charge of styling for the first time. And bought everything in record time. Now, all eyes are on him. “Yeah, Ben, why?” Andy asks, laughing. “It’s all about time efficiency,” Ben says defensively. “Andy talks too much at shops, so I said to him I’ll just go out and get stuff.” Things improve for the boys when the judges get to the laundry, with Darren Palmer really liking the detail in charcoal around the sage. Echoes Neale: “Bit of colour. It’s a colour very popular in the art deco era ... it was a good choice.” Shaynna is back in fan mode, saying the layout here is much better than Dan and Carleen’s. Darren thinks the mirror splashback is great. Sadly, the powder room doesn’t get the same love. “It feels so narrow. This room makes me feel like the walls are closing in on me,” Neale says. But the boys are still in good spirits. “Everyone tells us we can’t do it,” Ben says. “But we don’t give up. Never. That’s the Geelong motto.” That’s the attitude. And third is certainly not a bad effort. Pat yourself on the back, boys. ● ALEAH ESPANTA » Watch The Block on Channel Nine » Catch up on 9now.com.au

If you see the walls as the backdrop, think about what else you can put into the scene. It might be a timber tree bookshelf or a suspended bed tree house, a car-shaped bed or any number of theatrical inclusions that will light up your little one’s mind. You can keep the room simpler and more chic, too, if you wish, but do always consider the personality and desires of your child and what they want from their space. Kids will need a place to play as well as a place to store everything they play with, so boxes to dump toys in are a great idea, as are shelves to get everything off the
“try & see the world through their eyes & create a place of wonder” floor and on the walls in an ordered, or semi-ordered, fashion. By creating a place for everything to go, you’re setting up your child with the best possible chance of keeping their room clean and tidy – and you happy. Think, too, about the right flooring for your child, who’ll spend time playing on the floor. A soft rug will save their knees but play dough, clay and sand don’t come out of furry or shaggy rugs as easily as, say, a flat-weave or cut-pile rug. Variation of colour and pattern will help you live with mishaps and, as with all

he fun is just getting started when you get to upgrade your bub into their very own big boy or girl room. Our boy’s room started out as a tiny space under the stairs that was painted in his favourite colour and covered in Spiderman decals and details. I didn’t have to spend more than a few hours to turn what used to be a study into his very own room, albeit small but, frankly, just the right size for a little guy. It doesn’t take much to excite a small child either – just their favourite colour or colours, their favourite things represented in some way and their favourite belongings to play with, and they’re sweet. The real fun comes when you try and see the world through their eyes and create a little place of wonder for them. Turn your mind towards your child’s favourite picture books; they’re filled with places of surprise and adventure, so you can be confident that if you achieve the same thing for their room, they’re going to be pretty happy with your efforts. Colour and pattern are the perfect backdrop for kids’ rooms. Paint applied in interesting ways by carving up different shapes on the walls might be a little too adventurous for some adults, but can be a really cool way to play with colour and shape for not a lot of expense. You can achieve even more detailed results with wallpaper, though it does take some skill to hang. Decals can be changed semi-regularly for a few hundred dollars, and your kids can help you apply them, or even do it all on their own. It will give them a real sense of ownership and pride.

spaces, colour, texture and pattern in rug form are a great base for the room. There also needs to be a place to do homework, crafts or just draw, so that means a desk. This will want to be as far away from a school desk as possible, though, to let their creativity shine, so think of colours or interesting shapes, and make sure it is size-appropriate for your child’s age. Artwork is important in every room in the house but here choose art with your kids or use some of their favourite school projects to decorate their walls. It could be fun to even blow up some of their art on to custom wallpaper and apply it at macro size. Anything that sparks their creativity is OK, and different kids will love different things, from Barbie or Batman to Lego, rainbows, sparkles or animals. Just find a way to work in what they love, and build the rest of your scheme around it. Kid-sized furniture is a good idea too. I’ve used a modern take on a beanbag that can sit against something to be a seat or lie flat on the ground to play on or around. To dial up the cuteness, you can also find cool wingback armchairs or dining settings that have been reduced down to little-people size. Sure, they’ll outgrow them, but they’ll also get too grown-up for the general playfulness of the room at about the same time, so you’ll need to let their room evolve with them.

Here are the trends you can expect to see at the races.
LACE Lace continues its reign and will be a popular choice for the Spring Racing Carnival. “Expect to see pastel colours and interesting shapes such as fluted skirts,” Nadia says. » Beauty \ Lace is soft and elegant. Tre suggests pairing it with a bold, matte red. » Hair \ Erin recommends wearing hair down and wavy with this look.
POP COLOURS Nadia wears Donna Ruffle Hem Midi Dress $169.99 from Forever New
Red and khaki will be the go-to for those looking to make a bold statement with colour. “Introduce texture through accessories like shoes and handbags,” Nadia says. » Beauty \ If you’re wearing a bold colour, Tre suggests sticking to nude and natural makeup tones.
YOUR HEALTH DESERVES MORE THAN A CHEMIST THAT’S JUST ANOTHER CHECKOUT
» Hair \ With this trend, Erin recommends letting your colour do the talking. Keep it in a soft low bun or ponytail. Wavy or straight, just make sure the overall look is soft.
PANTS One of the boldest trends we’ll see this spring racing season is women wearing pants and suits. » Beauty \ This is Tre’s favourite carnival trend and a perfect opportunity to play up the lip. Go for something bright and matte in an orange or pinky mauve. » Hair \ If you like your hair pushed back, this is the style for you. Erin recommends wearing hair back but staying away from last season’s ultra-slicked-back look. Naomi Strapless Jumpsuit $129.99 $129.99, All garments pictured from Forever New forevernew.com.au

eggie-Fay Furminger believes the mermaid’s time has come. Well, mermaid crowns anyway. The Leopold artist and milliner, known for her sustainable style and quirky headpieces, says the headgear of the mythical sea creatures are all the rage this carnival season. Her crowns are different to the flowery kind. “It’s usually seashell inspired,” Meg says. “I do handmade mermaid and flower crowns. I prefer to call them festival crowns because then I think it is quite a broad term that way.” Meg has noticed the mermaid trend in her retail job at Cotton On. “All the stuff that is coming through is mermaids. There was heaps of cat stuff for ages, and now mermaids and unicorns are the real big thing,” she says. Meg jokes she has been preparing for the trend for years. “I’m really excited about it. For the past four years I’ve been growing my hair and I’m like, ‘I want to be a mermaid … that’s all I want to be’ and now my hair is long and mermaid crowns are like a thing,” she says. “I’m just really happy about life.” The wider oceanic influences began just a few months ago, when Meg found Melbourne florist Chelsea Shiels (from Chelsea’s Flowercrowns, @chelseasflowercrowns) on Instagram.
Chelsea is known for her creative arrangements and has 180,000 followers on the social media platform. Her work caught Meg’s interest. “She does amazing mermaid crowns; they are really intricate,” she says. Chelsea’s work inspired her to design her own headgear with a Meg-Fay twist. “I could do something with my own style, which I am actually liking a lot better because it was me, it wasn’t her,” she says. Growing up with a love of vintage has also influenced her artistic creations. “I’ve definitely always been crafty,” she says. “My step-mum owns a vintage store in Winchelsea, Jenny’s in Willis Street, which the family calls Gee’s. She was always getting me stuff from wherever she sources stuff … and I just like to redo things with it and put it all together. That’s where this kind of came from, as well.” The results of Meg’s labour is a fresh medley of millinery and headwear pieces, reworked from the originals.
(LUCINDA GOODWIN)
“now mermaids and unicorns are the real big thing”
The process behind the mermaid crowns draws on a love of fossicking in op shops and other places for discarded items, then working them into loved pieces. “I get old jewellery from op shops and I put it together and make it into something fresh – especially things that are not trendy anymore,” she says. “I try to re-fashion it so that it’s cool.” Re-fashioning op shop finds also helps keep the prices of Meg’s creations down. “I’m also trying to make it cheap for my customers as well,” she says. “If I get given stuff, or find things at the op shop, and I make something new of it, I don’t have to charge so much.” Making one-offs crafted with love is important too. For instance, Meg has just sold a Princess Elsa-inspired headpiece. “I normally just make one-of-a-kinds,” she says. “That’s what I think is more special about it too … people are going to get something unique and different.” This includes custom orders, she says, timely for the spring racing season. “People will message and send me a picture of what they think they want, and I will just re-work it with my twist.”● ANNA KOSMANOVSKI » Instagram: @megfaymakes Etsy: @megfaymakes

o you want your rose bushes to flower the way they do at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day? Well, they can. But you’ll have to think the way they do at Flemington and bravely cross the threshold that separates gardening from farming. That is the first tip from Flemington’s “keeper of roses”, Terry Freeman, who oversees the well-being of 16,000 rose plants at the course. “In a funny way we are farming roses, not just growing them,” Terry says. “Much like everything, you put as much as you can into it. The more effort you put into your roses, the better they perform.” Irrespective of effort, though, the elements still have a big say and this year the elements have him slightly worried. But despite the heavy rainfalls and wild weather conditions of recent months, he is confident his roses are on track to bloom ready for Derby Day. The keeper worries about the weather but he sticks to a schedule to urge his roses along. Having worked with roses for more than four decades, Flemington’s manager of grounds and gardens knows more about these flowers than most. He also expects more from his roses than the rest of us and, to this end, he puts the plants through a regimen that might seem like boot camp to the average gardener. The boot camp works, and the roses troop their colours on command, with as little as possible left to chance. Follow this course and your garden-grade rose plants can also put on the sort of show that their comrades do at Flemington.
14 DOMAIN GEELONG \ OCTOBER 13, 2016
The Flemington rose year starts with a winter pruning in June-July so that they can bloom in November for the spring carnival. The plants are trimmed after the carnival so they flower again about New Year’s Day. In late January, they are trimmed once more, to induce blooming when the Australian Cup is run in March. To summarise, that’s one pruning and two trimmings a year for each of the 16,000 plants. The pruning is carried out by a team of gardeners who take on the floribundas first, then the old-fashioned varieties, followed by standard roses and hybrid teas. As a guideline, roses that flower earlier are pruned later and the late bloomers are clipped earlier. The roses get a solid feed of an organic-based, pelletised fertiliser three times a year: in September, late November and late January. They are also given a foliar feed using a fish-based liquid fertiliser when flower buds begin to show. Flemington roses are fed Sudden Impact and Charlie Carp. The carp-based feed deposits a slightly oily coating on the leaves, deterring black spot among the roses, Terry says. Last but not least, the roses are watered by a drip-irrigation system, also to avoid black spot. When roses are pruned, fed and watered on schedule, they will perform under almost any conditions because they are sturdy plants. Never forget, though, that nature still has the last word. “We do all we can, but we are in the hands of the elements,” Terry says. ● SIEW-CHING GOH
(VINCE CALIGIURI \ GETTY IMAGES)
FLOWER POWER The roses grown at Flemington are predominantly floribundas, which produce flowers in dense clusters (unlike hybrid tea roses, which generally produce single-stemmed flowers). New roses are purchased as potted plants in December so they can settle in quickly and flower the following November. “We used to buy bare-roots but in the past few years we have been buying mostly potted plants as they establish more quickly,” says T Terry Freeman. The roses, too, are changing, he says. They are more disease-resistant and come in a greater range of colours. Terry’s personal favourite is a rose called Grimaldi, a French T floribunda with blooms that are salmon pink splashed with white. About 5000 of these roses are planted along the main driveway of the racecourse. Home gardeners looking for a fragrant rose might want to consider Chartreuse de Parme, a hybrid tea rose with deep magenta blooms. Abraham Darby, a David Austin rose with apricot/light-pink blooms, also has a good scent. ● ● Grimaldi and Chartreuse de Parme roses are available from Rankins Roses. rankinsroses.com.au ● Abraham Darby is supplied bare-rooted and in pots by Treloar Roses. treloarroses.com.au

hile most of us are tucked up in bed fast asleep, Julian Spence, like many other marathon runners, is already seeing the new day dawn as he pounds the pavement on his daily run. In mid-winter, this can mean running in the dark and wet with a lamp on his head. The marathon runner, who hails from the Great Ocean Road town of Anglesea but now calls Ballarat home, started long-distance running as a 23-year-old and has had remarkable success on the road. He started running seriously around 2009. “I stopped playing football and decided to have a go at a couple of fun runs and I really enjoyed it. I liked the fact you were never committed to a team as such. You could go out and do your own training in your own time and no one was relying on you. It was a real change from playing team sports.” It wasn’t long before Julian ran his first marathon. He had one good race and then spent the next two years injured. “Most of the time younger runners are guided in really small increases in volume and race distance, so they may not actually run a marathon until they are in their late 20s after 10 years of running. I went about it in the reverse way; it wasn’t very good for the body. I battled for a while.”
Julian reduced the distance he was racing, moved to the United States in 2011 and spent time in a college team where a coach helped him get back on track. Now he is back in Victoria and has competed in more than a dozen marathons across Australia, the US and Japan. “The past two years I’ve pretty much been injury-free so it’s been a really good run of consistent training,” he says. It has paid off. In May he won the Great Ocean Road Marathon for the second year in a row. “When I first started running it was always the race that I wanted to do well at because, being from Anglesea, it’s pretty much my local race. There aren’t that many marathons in Victoria so we always look at that one and go, ‘That’s the home marathon, we’ve got to do well at that one’. It was pretty much a dream to win it the first time and then last year it felt just as good.” Julian says while the scenery along the Great Ocean Road is breathtaking, it can work both ways for runners. “You can have beautiful conditions one year and the next year it can be dreadful. Because you are so far out on the coast, you are really exposed to the elements and this year the competitors just got hammered with wind and rain and salt. It was a really tough one.”
He was also in good form in April when he won the 2016 Geelong Half Marathon (around the Barwon River), and in late August broke a course record in the Grampians Wonderland Run (a trail run) by more than 30 minutes. “There’s a lot of history in the Geelong Half [Marathon],” Julian says. “Normally if you look through the record books, the most prominent runner of the time has done well
“It’s an addiction, it really is, & it’s an obsession” in it. I’ve had probably five or six cracks at it and never been able to win it, so last year it was pretty special to be able to get my name alongside some really good runners.” Julian will compete in the Melbourne Marathon on October 16. However, the former manager of the Geelong West branch of Running Company, which specialises in shoes for athletes, has been busy opening his own Running Company store in Ballarat in July, which he says has hindered his

preparation for the event. “My training hasn’t been ideal so it is not something I have a lot of expectation for.” As for the future, Julian says he wants to turn his focus to off-road running. “I see it as a big part of the future of the sport. There is a bit of a boom in the running world called trail running where you try to avoid concrete at all costs and you run on trails that take you into the wilderness. It attracts a different crowd who aren’t so interested in running a fast pace, but are out there to see how far they can go or just enjoy the landscape more. “It has a much more fun atmosphere, it’s less competitive and it seems to be the way running is going.” After the Melbourne Marathon, Julian will turn his focus to the Bogong to Hotham Rooftop Run in January, a 64-kilometre trail race that starts in Mountain Creek outside Mount Beauty. Competitors run to the summit of Mount Bogong before running through alpine country to Mount Hotham. Julian is also in the planning stages with organisers to hold a trail run along the Goldfields track in December. In the lead up to a marathon Julian will clock up about 170 kilometres a week on the road. “In Australian distance running, it’s blasphemy not to do your long run on
a Sunday. Everyone does a long run on a Sunday morning and those guys training for a marathon normally spend two-and-a-half to three hours out there. Every other day is broken into two runs per day.” Julian says most runners will tell you it’s not love of running that gets them up each day. “There’s a little bit of an obsession that if they don’t run then they will be grumpy for the day and their head will be muddled,” he says. “There is research that shows you get a similar endorphin release as with other addictions. It’s an addiction, it really is, and it’s an obsession. “At the pointy end, I know how many kilometres I need to run to be competitive. And if I don’t wake up for that run, then it might be 15 kilometres lost for that day. If I do that twice a week, and not get up for my run, that puts me 30 kilometres down on what the guy next to me is running, which might make the difference between him breaking away and me getting dropped from the pack. “The marathon is actually not the hardest part. The effort on the day is not that significant. It’s the months of getting up every day, doing your weekend long run, going out when it’s dark – that’s the real marathon and that’s what breaks people before the race.” ● JESSICA GABITES

rysdale’s food scene is gaining momentum as Ground Zero Cafe steps it up with a new and improved menu and a new chef. The cafe, owned by Josh Williams, opened more than three years ago as a coffee shop but Drysdale customers were hungry for more, so food became part of the offering. “The building was just an empty shed, basically, and we completely decked it out,” Josh says. “We wanted to go a little more upmarket with the decor and make it look a bit trendy, because there was nothing really like that down this way.” The industrial/modern cafe features polished concrete floors, timber tables, couches, huge windows (opening to an outdoor area) and pendant lighting. “We just want customers to come and relax and chill out. We always have nice cruisy music on, so they can come and have a coffee, read the paper or kick back on the couches,” Josh says. “We also have plenty of room for prams. We didn’t want people sitting on top of each other, we wanted to create space.” Josh worked as a chef for about seven years before branching out into a mobile coffee business and then opening Ground Zero Cafe. He owns three mobile coffee vans, managed by family, along the Bellarine – they are called Bean Cravin’ Coffee. With two young children, he thought the cafe would be easier to run than the mobile 18 DOMAIN GEELONG \ OCTOBER 13, 2016
coffee business. “But it’s the opposite,” Josh says. “I’m busier now than I’ve ever been. The cafe can get to the point where there are no seats left and people are lining up during the week.” The cafe recently gained a new chef, Jason Hearsch, along with a new menu that will follow through to summer. “We thought we would make the food a little more funky and upmarket and get some of that Geelong crowd in,” Josh says.

SALTED CARAMEL & BANANA PANCAKES
“We just wanted to do something different for Drysdale.” Breakfast and lunch are served until 2pm, with coffee and display cabinet offerings – focaccias, pasties, pies, sausage rolls, wraps, cakes and slices – available all day. Josh says one popular dish on the breakfast menu is the Citrus Smashed Av ($17) – smashed avocado with Meredith goat’s cheese feta topped with poached eggs and tomato medley and drizzled with citrus mayo.

Another is the Pulled Pork Benedict ($17.50) with slow-roasted pork on La Madre sourdough topped with runny poached eggs and drizzled in a smoky hollandaise sauce, served with apple salad and onion rings. If you have a sweet tooth, try the Peanut Butter and Pretzel Waffles ($14) or the Salted Caramel and Banana Pancakes ($16). The pancakes are topped with grilled banana and banana ice-cream, drizzled with salted caramel sauce and garnished with popcorn and chocolate fairy floss. The ice-cream is to die for, as is the gooey caramel sauce. For lunch, the Cheeky Chicken Burger ($18) served with chips and salad would be an easy option – with special spiced chicken breast, cheese, bacon, crispy onion rings and house-made barbecue sauce. The cafe also offers fresh juices, smoothies, milkshakes, local wine, beer and cider and a specialty coffee blend. In the next few months, Ground Zero will come to life at night with tapas/share plates and acoustic music. It will also start catering for functions leading up to Christmas. ● JULIA MILLARD » Ground Zero Cafe, 1/34 Murradoc Road, Drysdale. 5251 5100. They’re doing great things at Austins & Co and here’s a wine that’s excellent and effortless. It treads a nice line between elegance and richness, with grilled nuts, peach, blossom and citrus aromas. There’s a touch of minerality, too, with grapefruit acid providing a line of structure. Better at room temperature than cold; there’s driving power behind the flavours ●
Named after the surf break east of Winkipop and Bells Beach. There’s a load to like here, starting with the rich aromas of tropical fruits, melon and peach. Grapefruit kicks in on the palate to rein in the rich flavours and a light grip finishes off the compelling structure. There’s texture and a smoky, grilled nuts character on the finish. ●
This barrel-fermented chardonnay has all the complexity you’d expect from a range of clones and 12 months of maturation in French oak. There’s alluring nectarine and lemon zest, plus toasty grilled hazelnuts from the oak. Then there’s a silky texture, concentration and lengthy finish. The best wine I’ve had from Scotchmans Hill for a while. ●
Woah, here’s a wine with a lot of personality. From a vineyard on the Bellarine Peninsula, this is chardonnay unashamedly dialled up to 11. It starts with aromas of citrus, peach, grilled nuts and nougat before moving on to rich, textural flavours of lemon and stone fruit. A zippy line of mineral acid adds some restraint. ●
It is often said that a wine of terroir offers little on the nose and a lot in the mouth. This has gentle (and appealing) stonefruit and spice aromas but really comes alive when it hits the taste buds. It’s seamless – from its creamy texture to zippy citrus-flavoured acid, and concentrated stonefruit and spice flavours that build and build. ●

Estate-grown in Bannockburn. There’s delightful pinosity in its bouquet – raspberry, cherry and strawberry, plus a little oak spice. Smooth and savoury; there’s energy to this with taut acid reining in the savoury not-quite-ripe blood plum and morello cherry flavours. There’s earthiness, too. It’s seamless, serious and savoury; there’s a lot to like. ●
Just one barrel – 32 cases – were made. I got so distracted sipping it, I nearly forgot to write a review. It smells like a fistful of squashed cherries and slides into the mouth with perfume and gentle plum and raspberry characters. Its energy and juicy flavour make it worth seeking out. Don’t be the 33rd person in line for a case. ●
If you’ve ever ridden the Oakdene train with your kids at Toast to the Coast, you’ll have passed the vineyards that grew the grapes that went into this complex, perfumed pinot. A bouquet of plum, dark cherry and spice leads to an array of dark berry, cherry and plum flavours and a dusting of grippy tannins. ●
There’s something about cool-climate, maritime shiraz – this is from the Bellarine – that sucks me in every time. The stalky cherry, plum, pepper and spice aromas start the journey, while the fleshy cherry, blackberry, mocha flavours finish it. In between there’s balanced acid, an even flow of flavour and fine-grained tannins. ●
Longboard is part of the Bellbrae Estate suite of wines, but this is a range that takes the winemaking to the edge. There’s a load of whole-bunch fermentation here, with perfume, white pepper, spice and dark fruit flavours. It’s silky smooth, bright and, well, delicious. Cherry, blueberry and raspberry flavours burst through on an impressive exit. ●
Rowsley Fault’s gamay was a revelation last year. This time around it’s the graciano, a grape originally from Spain’s Rioja region, that has really made its mark. Smelling of morello cherry, blackberry, earth and tar, it’s full-bodied, fruity and delightfully tannic. It’s big but it’s not dense and heavy; rather it’s fresh, concentrated and tasty. ●

But before you start building your decor Pinterest board and investing in new wares, it’s time to tackle one of the most frustrating parts of the process: moving. There’s no denying it: moving can be a real pain. In fact, people dread it so much that 61 per cent of adults list moving house as more stressful than getting divorced. If you’d rather subsist in your cramped old apartment than pack boxes, moving expert Manuella Irwin says there’s another way. DEAL WITH ADMIN TASKS IN ADVANCE “The moving process does not only involve the transportation of your items,” says Manuella. She notes that one of the most stressful and oft-overlooked aspects of moving house is tackling administrative tasks. “You need to think [about] change of address and forwarding mail to the new place, cancelling utilities and researching providers at the new place, informing your bank/ insurance company, dealing with realtors, ceasing rental agreements or selling property,” she says. “All that should be planned and organised before moving day.”

HIRE A BABYSITTER
top tip
Even if you’re trying to save costs, there’s one expense you should never skip. “On moving day, if you are relocating with kids, you should arrange a sitter in advance,” says Manuella. “If you have pets, make sure they don’t obstruct the work of your movers.”
Instead, she recommends creating a logical and clear labelling system and leaving any essentials such as a flashlight or first aid kit to the side. “Divide your household items into groups based on the room they’re located in, material they’re made of and frequency of use,” she says. “Start with the items you use rarely, and don’t mix items from different rooms or items of different types such as liquids with clothes.”
NEVER MOVE ON A FRIDAY OR SATURDAY
USE LINEN INSTEAD OF BUBBLE WRAP
The results are in: Friday and Saturday are officially the busiest days to move house. A 2015 MyMovingReviews study found that almost 19 per cent of all moves occur on a Friday. The best day to make the transition is Sunday, with only 7 per cent of people choosing this day.
While cardboard boxes and bubble wrap are fairly inexpensive on their own, moving costs can quickly add up. Before stocking up on supplies, Manuela recommends a few hacks to make the most of items you already have in your home. “Your home is full of free packing materials, such as clothing, bed linens, pillows, laundry bins and suitcases,” she says. “Wrap dishes in T-shirts or insert Styrofoam plates in between yours [and] put pillows and blankets in garbage bags and seal them. When you load the truck, use them as padding between furniture or breakable items.” ● SOPHIE MIURA
RESERVE A PARKING SPACE Hiring movers? Manuella says to be aware of additional fees and prep your space before they arrive. “Consumers should keep in mind that full-service moving companies charge for accessorial services like when they have to

The plastic film can also be used to prevent liquids from spilling. Simply unscrew the lids of shampoos or pantry items like olive oil, and place a small square of cling wrap on top. Screw the lid back on to secure the plastic and create a second protective layer to avoid leaks.
disassemble furniture and assemble it at the new place, storage fees, obstacles like stairs, or if the truck cannot be parked near the entrance and movers have to carry boxes more than 23 metres,” she explains. Park your car in front of your home at least a day prior to ensure the space is available
when movers arrive, and measure doorways to check if furniture can fit through with ease.
CREATE A CLEAR LABELLING SYSTEM Scrawling the rough contents of each box on the side just doesn’t cut it, says Manuella.

1 \ WILL YOUR CEILING HANDLE THE WEIGHT?
Some older-style slab homes or package homes can’t withstand the weight of an upwards extension. A structural engineer will need to check it out for feasibility and may be able to suggest ways to work around structural limitations by distributing weight correctly.
2 \ IS THERE ENOUGH SPACE FOR A ROOM(S)?
If you have 2.4 metres of head space in 60 per cent of the area, you have the space to create a room. Older homes often have more space than newer ones and a steep roof pitch suggests the possibility of sneaking in an extra room. Consider how the room will be arranged so that seating and storage sit under the lower ceiling height.

As the ceiling cavity is inspected, you will likely notice it’s either much hotter or colder than the living areas. Any living space or bedroom will need thorough roof cladding and insulation. Have your existing roof inspected to ensure there are no leaks; water can ruin insulation so watertightness is essential.

4 \ HOW ABOUT VENTILATION & LIGHTING?
These two elements are important parts of a roof conversion. Installation of skylights or roof windows is probably non-negotiable and will make the space lighter and more cheerful. Choosing windows that can open will provide essential air flow, so this factor is important to liveability.
5 \ WHAT ABOUT THE COST?
Attic conversions cost about a third of the price of moving to a property with an extra room and they could increase your property’s value by as much as 25 per cent, especially if it’s a bedroom/ bathroom addition. ●

I thought, ‘This is a country with a big future’.” Franco started out selling white goods door to door. “I didn’t speak English, only Italian. hen Woods and Warner were asked to create a luxurious interior for the St Ives residence, the brief was simple. “Our client wanted an interior that reflected her refined yet playful style and made a nod to great Italian design.” The result is a striking example of modern Milano influences: a feminine approach counterbalanced by rich, dark colours, opulence and an edgy feel. Directors Sonia Warner and Jacinta Woods tell us about their Italian inspiration.

TRANSFORM YOUR ROOM OVER A WEEKEND WITH THESE
QUICK FIXES, WRITES MIRANDA TAY
CHANGE YOUR LAYOUT
Refreshing a room doesn’t necessarily involve buying new items. Work with the old but rearrange things. Move that sofa away from the wall and further into the room, then team with side tables. Swapping a central coffee table for side tables means you can place chairs closer together for intimate tete-a-tetes. Hey presto! You’ve just freed up wall space for more shelving. Tip: a room has more aesthetic appeal if objects are at different heights, so ensure you have both vertical and horizontal lines covered.

CUSHIONS & THROWS
One of the simplest ways to revive a decor scheme is with cushions and throws. They’re instant updates at minimal cost and work on lounge suites, beds and bay windows. Digital printing has single-handedly upped the ante on designs but never underestimate the appeal of the handmade. CURATE A GALLERY
REVAMP YOUR ROOM IN
ORGANISE
Stop kidding yourself. Only rock gods and tormented geniuses get to claim chaotic clutter as inspirational art forms – for the rest of us, it is what it is: a mess. You’d be surprised what cleaning up does to a space. Modular shelving systems allow the boxes to be stacked in endless combinations and are practical and versatile.
Every picture tells a story. So why not have a series of stories on your walls? Picture gallery walls are gaining in popularity but there’s an art of display to them, so test the configurations before nailing them in. Symmetrical straight rows work if each artwork is exactly the same size and shape. A more “scattered” look can be pulled together with a consistency of colour, shapes or theme.
48 HOURS
PAINT THE WALLS
Wash away the winter blues with a good hue – or a lovely metallic. Just because the skies are grey outside doesn’t mean you need to live with a neutral interior. Colour is back in a big way – especially brights and pastels. And nothing changes the feel of a room quite as effectively as a fresh coat of paint.
Lighting can make or break a room and not just in terms of illumination. Contemporary lighting is edgy and dramatic, with designers such as David Trubridge, Volker Haug and Christopher Boots leading the charge. Decide on the ambience you want. Glass and crystals are glam, wood is earthy and natural, and metals can rock a retro or industrial feel. Shine, shine, shine!

If the children’s rooms look like well-worn battlegrounds, rope in the bairns for some quick transformation. Forty Winks’ tips for amping up the kids’ rooms include adding bright hues to stimulate the imagination, graphic prints for a pop of colour and beanbags that double as cosy reading nooks.

Creating a vignette is the easiest way to revamp a decor scheme and the best thing about it is you can work with whatever you’ve got already. Find a perfect spot, choose a theme and amass the items, be they books, collectables, or objets d’art. Domo’s stylish vignette featuring a Grange Directoire hall cupboard (pictured, left) has an informal feel about it that is at once nautical and French. ● mtay@theweeklyreview.com.au 100316_12746_10045102-01_a130ct@MMP

URBAN SPACES CHADSTONE

hadstone, Australia’s fashion capital, this week unveils the completion of the first and most significant phase of its $660million development project. With Chadstone a long-established international leader and trend setter in fashion retail, it should come as no surprise that its latest development represents another ground-breaking design first for Australia. Its new development centres on a soaring 31-metre-high atrium and is sheltered by a spectacularly curved 1000-tonne glass gridshell roof, the first of its kind in Australia. The transparent roof floods the centre with natural light and provides Chadstone customers with column-free shopping, thanks to an innovative design by global leaders in design and engineering. Chadstone co-owners Vicinity Centres and Gandel Group have been building the centre’s latest precinct over the past two years, with a focus on opening up new horizons in retail, dining and entertainment experiences for Chadstone’s local and international shoppers. Set to open on Thursday, October 13, the first phase features international flagship stores, more than 60 new retail shops, a dining terrace and a state-of-the-art Hoyts cinema complex. Chadstone attracts about 20 million Australian and international visitors annually and when the project is completed in mid-2017 they will have the choice of nearly 600 retailers, with the convenience of the centre’s already completed 10,000 car parks and 14-bay centralised bus interchange. Vicinity Centres CEO and managing director Angus McNaughton says the world-class architecture at Chadstone reflects the essence of leading flagship fashion retail and iconic developments from around the globe to create a fresh customer experience based on the best of international design. “From London to Germany, then the Czech Republic to Australia, the impressive design and development of Australia’s first glass gridshell roof represents the innovation and collaboration of some of the best architects and engineers from around the world,” he says. Angus says the project aims to evolve Chadstone and take it beyond being the best in fashion and general retail to offer the best customer experience across shopping, entertainment and dining. “We have designed and delivered a perfect showcase for the premium customer experience we offer at Chadstone. This is one of the largest milestones in Chadstone’s history and reinforces its position as Australia’s number one shopping destination.” ● LIZ McLACHLAN lmclachlan@theweeklyreview.com.au

NEW STORES
Chadstone will introduce two new dining precincts – a dining terrace and 1300-seat food gallery. The new dining terrace takes its inspiration from around the world and showcases seven new restaurants with wide appeal, some of which will be opening branches in a shopping centre or outside of Melbourne or Sydney’s CBD for the first time. These restaurants include the Burger Project by Neil Perry, Woodstock Pizzicheria, Marae Izakaya and Mexican street food favourite Fonda. There will be more than 20 outlets in the food gallery, offering local and international flavours. ●
More than 60 new retail stores open this week in the first phase of Chadstone’s redevelopment. They include two-level stores for international fashion giants Uniqlo and H&M, along with flagship retailer Sephora and Tesla Motors’ first integrated Melbourne retail dealership. At completion in mid-2017, the development will feature more than 100 new retailers, including international luxury designer stores such as Valentino, Celine and Loewe, premium international stores including the Kooples, Reiss and Michael Kors, and Australia’s first Legoland Discovery Centre. ●
Australia’s first glass gridshell roof covers more than 7000 square metres and free-spans up to 42 metres over Chadstone’s new precinct. Based on a lattice framework, the roof derives its strength from its double curvature. Meticulously designed, planned and executed in Australia and overseas, the roof includes 2700 glass panels of varying shapes and sizes all seamlessly mapped to complete the structure. Each panel was made and coated in Germany then individually installed. ●

fter only three bids at 82 Vermont A Avenue, Corio, on Saturday, Jason Barnett (Barnett Real Estate) was able to give the two vying parties the good news. “We are selling,’’ Jason said. Twenty onlookers watched as the threebedroom brick house close to Corio Village shopping centre was put up for sale, with two young couples seeking the prize. The opening gambit of $210,000 was upped by $2000, then it went to $215,000 and the property was on the market. Four bids later the hammer came down, a young local couple with a toddler snaring their first home for $225,000. No doubt it will be a different proposition for Jason when he auctions 2 Hawthorn Avenue, Belmont, next month. A The original weatherboard house on a block of around 900 square metres in a tightly held pocket of the suburb screams potential. “It should have a lot of interest because of

its location and the number of options for the property,” Jason said. Meanwhile Tom Butters (Buxton Newtown) ventured into relatively unexplored territory when he auctioned 57 Presidents Avenue, A Ocean Grove. “It’s a promising market for auctions,’’ Tom said. A crowd of 50 outside the three-bedroom brick house on a block of almost 1060 square metres saw a man post a bid of $600,000. There was no further interest and the property was passed in, but Tom closed the deal soon after for $690,000. The buyer was a local who wants to be closer to town. Tom’s colleague Andy Ingham (Buxton Newtown) also had success post-auction at 27 Clydesdale Way, Highton. Twenty people at the four-bedroom, twostorey American colonial house saw a man offer an opening bid of $550,000. He was the only bidder and the property, which offers views over Geelong and to the
Surf Coast, was passed in at $575,000. It sold after for a higher, undisclosed figure to a Melbourne family. Andy will preside over the auction of a different kettle of fish this Saturday at 91 Waratah Street, Geelong West. The three-bedroom weatherboard in the heart of the red-hot suburb is a renovator’s delight. “This property has been getting a lot of interest,’’ Andy said. Strong interest is something Tony Moorfoot (Buxton Highton) has had plenty of recently. His office has just had its best month of sales on record, and October looks as good. On Grand Final weekend he showed 15 groups through the three-bedroom townhouse at 14 McRorie Street, Highton, had four offers and sold the property above the asking price. “The 3216 area is seeing a lot of interest,’’ Tony said. ●

here’s something idyllic about this hidden pocket of Highton. It’s close to Highton village and just 10 minutes from the city centre but, believe it or not, the central location isn’t the biggest drawcard. On the back of the Highton hills, this spot also offers glorious views across the Moorabool Valley, and huge blocks; this one, for example, covers 1100 square metres. If your wish list includes peace, quiet and space, along with city conveniences, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better offering than this. This sprawling family house has been designed to capitalise on all of these things. At the front, the west-facing verandah offers a spot to take in the outlook. Out the back is an entertainer’s dream, with an attractive landscaped outdoor area. Recently finished, the four-bedroom G.J Gardiner house offers the ultimate in contemporary living and a split-level floor plan that is flexible for families of all sizes and stages in life. Mostly, it maximises the impact of the vista from the front. Most modern layouts, for example, put the open-plan zone at the back of the house to open to the backyard. This house has its hub at the front, with the dining area opening to the verandah. A glass balustrade ensures the outlook is uninterrupted. West-facing windows in the dining and living areas are placed to connect residents to the landscape, allowing the view to be enjoyed from inside and out. Polished floorboards throughout the open-plan area create an easy flow from space to space. The stylish kitchen has stone benchtops, white joinery, stainless-steel appliances and a glass splashback. Pendant lights make a statement in the open-plan area, as does a stackstone feature wall in the living area. The latter echoes the stackstone on the front portico, and another feature wall in the entrance hall. The main bedroom is also at the front of the house. It has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with double vanity. There’s a study nearby. The remaining bedrooms are at the back of the house. Like the main, they’re carpeted. They also have triple-door built-in wardrobes. The main bathroom is centrally located. There’s a huge rumpus room, the ultimate kids’ play space, in this part of the house, too. It has a built-in TV unit and opens to the rear outdoor entertainment space. Out here, exposed aggregate concrete makes for a lowmaintenance area. Sandstone retaining walls terrace the garden, flanking steps to the flat law at the top of the backyard. There’s a built-in barbecue and timber bench, as well as clever stone benchseats that are just the right height for little ones to sit on. The house has zoned ducted heating and cooling and an NBN connection. The ring road is nearby, making trips to Melbourne or the Surf Coast a breeze. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

This charming two-bedroom house offers an exciting opportunity to buy. The pretty porch sets the tone for what’s to come. Inside, the house oozes character with polished floorboards, high ceilings, leadlight windows and art deco light fittings. The interior is certainly good to go as is, but there is scope to modernise if desired. Both bedrooms are spacious and have ceiling fans. The timber kitchen has loads of cabinetry and a new stainless-steel stove, and you can put your feet up in the open dining, lounge and living area. The garden is easy-care and there’s a double carport and garage, as well as extra storage. The location completes the package. Lara locals refer to this as “the white house”. While its namesake in Pennsylvania Avenue might have size and American history on its side, this house is impressive in a different way. Classic design is fused with a contemporary layout, and it has large, open-plan spaces, including three living areas. Few renovations are as complete, or as impressive, as this. The character weatherboard has been transformed from top to bottom, and is now a contemporary family house with luxury finishes. The heart of the residence is the open-plan area at the back, where a designer kitchen overlooks the meals area and living area. Large sliders open this hub to a huge, covered deck with a secured spa. There are polished floorboards throughout most of the ground floor. At the front, the main bedroom has carpet, as well as an indulgent walk-in wardrobe and plush en suite. Across the hall are a carpeted formal lounge and the fourth bedroom. There are two more bedrooms, each with a walk-in wardrobe, upstairs. There’s also a large rumpus room for the kids to take over on this floor. The main bathroom mirrors the en suite, with a freestanding bath and timber vanity. ● SARAH BIESKE
