Food trucks are a great melting pot of cuisines. This year’s Food Truck Friday serves up Vietnamese, Portuguese and Indian. Or go basic with bagels while enjoying live music. ●

Cider is having a moment, none more so perhaps than New York-inspired, non-alcoholic Hot Apple Cider. With its secret selection of warming spices, the drink tastes reassuringly like apple pie in a cup (yes, seriously). Use it in cocktails for an extra kick. ●

strengthening housing market is behind increased home building in Geelong, contributing to an improved performance by the local economy. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 282 houses were approved for construction in Greater Geelong in August, an increase of 31, or 12.4 per cent, on the 251 approved in July. Domain chief economist Dr Andrew Wilson says the latest data shows 2070 building approvals in Geelong so far this year. That’s up 14.8 per cent on the 1803 in the same period in 2015. “New house building is now increasing at a faster rate than Melbourne, which recorded an increase of 13.2 per cent over the same year-to-date comparisons,” Andrew says. “The Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula region of Greater Geelong has recorded a surge in new house approvals over the first eight months of this year, increasing by 20.9 per cent to 931 compared to the same period last year.” The most popular suburb for building approvals in the year to August was Grovedale,

with 663. On the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula, Ocean Grove-Barwon Heads was the most popular spot with 501 approvals. “Strengthening house-building activity in Geelong is supporting a growing local economy,” Andrew says. “The Geelong workforce increased strongly by 32,100 or 28.9 per cent over the year ending August, according to the latest ABS data, and the labour participation rate has also increased sharply over the year, rising to a healthy 66 per cent.” HIA economist Geordan Murray says the apartment boom in Melbourne is behind the bouyancy in Geelong. This is especially true of approvals for detached houses, which offer families affordable living “A relatively constrained supply of detached housing [in Melbourne] has contributed to price pressures and an erosion of affordability,” Geordan says. “The healthy level of detached home building activity in Geelong shows it is likely an attractive market for home buyers.” ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

JOE GRGIC \ Director, Harcourts North Geelong Started out \ My dad started the business in 1991. The agents at the time were closing and asked dad to join them in the city. Dad decided to take over the business; he kept all the staff and started North Geelong Real Estate. I went overseas after finishing uni and came back without a job. Dad said, ‘Do this until you find one’. I’ve been doing it ever since. Best part of the job \ You can’t get into this business unless you love people. It’s all about helping people achieve their dream. There’s never a boring day. Geelong’s property hot spot \ Geelong West, Manifold Heights and Hamlyn Heights have all had huge growth. If you look just outside those, to areas like Bell Park and Bell Post Hill, it gives buyers an opportunity to get in and enjoy the ride. Also, I believe in the entry suburbs, like Corio, Norlane and Whittington. My favourite place? I never drank coffee until I had kids and stopped sleeping. Now I love going out for a good coffee but there are too many great cafes peppered around the city to mention just one. On days off I like to … spend it with family and catching up with friends. I don’t get a lot of spare time, but I do love eating out and watching sport. ●

orget the underground carpark and wine cellar – designer homes with bespoke interior features are the latest development in the luxury property market. While display homes dominate the suburban market, truly one-of-a-kind properties offer a valuable point of difference that’s highly marketable to buyers. Think custom-made bathtubs, Italian marble bench tops and handmade lighting pendants – such high-end features are typically found only in high-end ‘forever homes’, making their presence on the property market a rarity. Interior designer David Hicks is regularly asked to source one-off light fittings and commission tailor-made furniture pieces to create bespoke design experiences for his clients. In a recent project, David’s team custom designed a five-metre long dining table made entirely out of stone – without a centre support. “We researched structural technology and found someone that was able to manufacture and build the table in situ, with the result strong enough to stand on,” he says. David attributes the heightened awareness of luxury interiors to the emergence of social media and the unwavering popularity of television programs such as Grand Designs, The Block Block and now Unreal Estate. “People are more educated and astute when it comes to design … Cumulatively these advances have created a generation with discerning tastes and keen eyes for detail, meaning they recognise a temporary trend when they see one and are less likely to succumb to the flavour of the month,” he says. “At a time when suppliers are churning out copies and knock offs, being able to say you have a one-of-a-kind piece is a rarity. Bespoke has a new cache these days; it’s more about originality now.”

CAMILLA & TIM D’ANTOINE’S STAND-OUT STYLE

Craftsmanship, complete with all the imperfections that buyers once might have cried foul over, can now prove the pedigree of a product such as genuine marble, a must-have material in high-end homes. “The beauty of marble is its individuality, produced by its organic nature. It looks more like art than anything,” David says. “We enjoy experimenting with its application and pushing the boundaries with how it is used, often taking the material a step further by using it for carved stone walls and custom basins.” The introduction of such materials in a creative yet practical form is ultimately what distinguishes these properties from the mainstream. “They don’t want that cookie-cutter Stepford solution,” says David. “They don’t want their home to look like their friends’, they want it to be a genuine reflection of

who they are and customised to suit their individual ways of living.” A dazzling example of bespoke style is the renovated Victorian home (pictured) renovated and recently sold ahead of auction by Camilla d’Antoine, creative consultant and founder of home decor company MOZI and her husband Tim d’Antoine, director of construction management company Gallagher Jeffs. After buying the property in Armadale, Melbourne, in 2012, the couple put their designer stamp on every corner of the home. Behind the classic facade they installed a curated collection of designer features, from solid copper doors to privately commissioned light fittings, imported antique tiles, and even reclaimed windows from Sydney University. Renovations developed in collaboration between architect Daryl Pelchen and the designer owner added to the modern amenity

of the now five-bedroom home. The sourcing of fixtures and fittings for the renovation commenced well before construction began, playing a key role in the house design. “I stumbled across a beautiful pair of arched steel windows at a salvage house that I purchased without knowing where they would go,” Camila says. “They had come out of a demolition at Sydney University and now sit proudly in the home along with items like the 1930s science lab trough in our laundry.” The finished result did not shy away from bold design choices, with the inclusion of a pink hallway and bright mustard barn door in the basement-level cinema. “We played with texture, colour and materials all the way through but never have we compromised on the overall look,” says Camilla. It’s cohesive but not predictable.” ● AMELIA BARNES OCTOBER 20, 2016 \ DOMAIN GEELONG 5

ove is a many-splendoured thing, especially when there’s a new bromance brewing. “Love is a very strong word and not one that I throw around willy-nilly,” declared Andy as he turned to face, not Ben, but Trent, the boys’ builder. “Love you, Trent. LOVE YOU.” With no money for trades, the boys have had to DIY, negotiate free labour from Trent (cue the love) – and rely on a Freedom voucher for styling their massive benchtop. In hell week – as kitchen week is known – no one escapes the slings and arrows. It’s a lesson learned the hard way when Ben attempts, unsuccessfully, to DIY a sliding door. Their final result, however, wows the judges when they walk in on “the party kitchen” of the block. Darren Palmer marvelled at the “crazy proportions” of the 3.9-metre-long benchtop, adding that “the quality is off the charts”. The colours – charcoal, putty, sea green – were a hit with Neale Whitaker who loved that, “They are very modern but reference the deco era.” Although their styling let them down again, Shaynna Blaze scored them an impressive 9.5, saying they had “taken the fun aspect from day one and they’ve got more sophisticated”. Eyeing victory – and Domain’s $10,000 prize – the boys gambled their one-point bonus – only to lose by a point to the perfect scores of Will and Karlie, and Dan and Carleen. Seems kitchen week once again lives up to its hellish reputation. ● MIRANDA TAY

CLEAN \ Clean that kitchen like it’s never been cleaned before. “Have it sparkling,” says agent Helena Fantela from Harcourts North Geelong, “so it looks and smells fantastic”. Then declutter – banish those fridge magnets and toasters. Potential buyers want to see the space on offer. EXPERT ADVICE \ One of the fastest ways to eat into your potential profit is to overcapitalise. Don’t. Get your selling agent to advise before you begin. “He or she can look through the home objectively and tell you where you need to spend money to get best value,” says Helena. BE NEUTRAL \ Buyers want to see your house

as a blank canvas, so go for “greys, whites, mocha – shades that aren’t going to offend anyone’s taste,” says agent Alycia Baines from Barry Plant Geelong. Cherie Barber, of Ten’s The Living Room, often opts for darker colours in her TV reno projects, but says the rule is to follow through with a lighter benchtop or vice versa. “Your benchtops should always be in contrast to the colour of your cabinets,” she says.

BENCHTOPS \ Painting cabinetry and

switching benchtops are often enough to transform the kitchen. “Stone is always safe,”

REFRESH \ “Don’t rip out, just

refresh,” says renovating expert Cherie. Those perfectly fine cabinets you’ve got? A lick of paint will update them. Cherie suggests using a laminate paint. “The key is good surface preparation,” she says. A couple of cans of paint plus primer will cost about $150 and “you can get a completely different looking kitchen on a budget”.

She often uses the Kaboodle brand from Bunnings. “You can get a new-looking kitchen, fully finished, for less than $7000 by using flatpack.” SPLASHBACKS \ Glass splashbacks are now a bit “ho-hum,” says Cherie. “Tiled splashbacks are popular,” says Alycia. They’re also the cheapest option. You can pick up standard

colour-wise? Cherie advocates using RustOleum’s stainless-steel paint to refresh it, as well as your old oven and fridge. APPLIANCES \ “Buy appliances in bundles

[to save money],” says Cherie. Unbranded appliances are sufficient, she says, “for properties valued at less than $750,000 – you don’t need all the bells and whistles.” However Alycia says “a brand name definitely helps”. Also consider updating the cooktop. “People highly value induction cooktops,” says Cherie.

BEFO RE FLOORING \ Forget the time, labour and

expense of tearing up the tiles or lino. “You don’t have to get timber; there’s vinyls that look wonderful these days for wet areas,” says Helena. Cherie is a big fan of Gerflor’s vinyl self-adhesive floor planks, which can be applied over most existing flooring. ● JOANNE BROOKFIELD

ifteen years after the first festival was held along the Geelong waterfront, Toast to the Coast has grown to become the showcase event for the Geelong wine region. Held over the Melbourne Cup long weekend, October 29 and 30, the festival highlights not only the quality and diversity of the region’s cool-climate wines, but also local produce and home-grown musical talent. It is a chance to shine the spotlight on the wide variety of wineries – from small boutique cellar doors to large estates – and their beautiful locations. More than 5000 people are expected to enjoy the two-day event, held throughout the Geelong wine industry’s three distinctively different sub-regions. Twenty wineries in the Bellarine Peninsula, Moorabool Valley and the Surf Coast will host visitors. A further six will also take part, offering their bottles at the participating wineries. Simon Kuc, president of the Geelong Winegrowers Association, says Toast to the Coast is “the region’s biggest showcase of the diverse and quality wineries here in the Geelong region. This is in addition to entertainment, music and amazing local food from pizzas to Mexican to abalone. There is definitely something for everyone,” he says. Visitors can enjoy a range of wine experiences during the festival, including masterclasses, vertical tastings and the opportunity to try limited releases. At many of the wineries they can also meet the winemaker, go behind the scenes to learn more about the art of making, explore the vineyards and enjoy cellar-door specials. The festival also gives visitors the opportunity to visit a number of wineries not normally open to the public. Along with the wine, there will also be a strong focus on food – everything from Spanish and Korean cuisine to cheeseboards, regional platters, local seafood and gourmet pizzas. Relax on a picnic rug or enjoy a sit-down meal among the vines or barrels. At Austins & Co in the Moorabool Valley, the famous Get Shucked oyster and prosecco bar is again expected to be a hit, along with Korean cuisine from The Daily Food Co. Entertainment will range from singer Johnny Rollins of The Voice fame, who will perform at Austins & Co, to popular cover band Test Pilot Molly at Leura Park Estate on the Bellarine. At the Bellarine’s Basils Farm, there will be flamenco, latin and jazz from Flamenco Fusion. Other attractions over the weekend will include a classic-car display at McGlashan’s Wallington Estate and at Bellarine Estate. Meanwhile, cider and beer are also having a moment. Bellarine Estate will have both beer and wine tasting on offer and you can choose between wine and cider at Mt Duneed Estate. At Leura Park, take your pick from their wine or try some from their guest winemakers Finesse Wines, Jack Rabbit Vineyard and Yes Said the Seal. There will also be frozen moscato mojitos or cosmopolitans and ciders from Flying Brick Cider Co. Industry leaders say the event is attracting more visitors from Melbourne who come down the highway to explore the region and indulge in the local food and wine, which has been one of Victoria’s hidden secrets. Simon says the event just keeps getting better. “It would be hard to pick out any

The winery’s cellar door manager Carolyn Anderson says: “Toast to the Coast is a highlight of the year and marks the opening of the new vintage and celebration season. Basils Farm will also open on Monday and Tuesday for wine tastings and sales. Their menu features platters of organic produce straight from their garden. The public can book weekend passes on a shuttle bus, with various loops allowing you to hop on and off and explore wineries across the Bellarine, Moorabool Valley and Surf Coast. alking through the doors of The Geelong Club is like taking a step into a bygone era. The Geelong Club was founded in 1859 as a place for local gentlemen to escape life’s pressures and enjoy each other’s company. The club had two periods of recess in the 1800s but has been running since 1881, and in its present location on Brougham Street since October 1889. While the building has undergone some minor renovations over the years, little has changed and The Geelong Club retains its character and charm. The club has also survived two world wars, a depression and huge social change. While changes have been made along the way, such as women being allowed to join the club in the mid-1980s and members now welcome from all walks of life, many of the traditions have been retained. The club still remains a meeting point for its 300 members, an increasing number of them women. “It’s a private club and is still owned as a private club by the members, which in this climate is really unusual,” says club manager Juli Baldwin. She says the club has an amazing history. “We have a club historian who wrote the club history and every new member gets a copy of that. One of our members is the great-grandson of the founding president. I don’t think many people in Geelong actually understand how much history is actually here.” Many members meet regularly for a coffee or a drink in front of a roaring fire in the member’s bar, a game of pool in the billiards room, to network or enjoy a meal in the restaurant. They can also access other areas such as the boardroom for meetings. Members are encouraged to use the club like they would their local cafe. “They used to have a saying long before I came here, which was, ‘Use the club not the pub’,” Juli says. Members are also welcome to bring as many guests as they like. Formerly applicants had to be nominated by a member to join up, but now members of the public can nominate themselves. The club also hosts various events for its members – from spring-racing functions to gin masterclasses. They will soon start a young members’ wine appreciation club. The members range from 20-92 years, with some of the older ones having been members for 70 years. Juli says they are also noticing an increase in members in the 20-35 age bracket.

the party season, is prosecco a suitable substitute for champagne? QItFor makes a great substitute – and one that’s easier on the budget, too. Prosecco’s a fairly A neutral-flavoured grape that’s at its floral best when fresh. To capture the purity of its pear, citrus and blossom flavours, most prosecco is made like a still wine before being gassed up in a similar way to a Sodastream. It’s a much simpler – and cheaper – process than champagne, which is reflected in the price. But beware, there are cheap Italian examples that are sweet and one-dimensional (you can add peach puree to these for a delicious Bellini). ● G O T A Q U E S T I O N E M A I L \ ben.thomas@domain.com.au

Imported by Dan Murphy’s, this ticks all the prosecco boxes – and at a good price. Floral apples, pears and green melon aromas are given a kick by zesty lemon, while its luscious, creamy mousse gives way to a balance of orchard fruits and zippy grapefruit. ●

While the club was once a meeting point exclusively for members and their families, it has thrown open its door to the public for weddings, business events and private functions. With a growing number of large corporations choosing to base themselves in Geelong, The Geelong Club, with its central location, is proving to be a popular spot for business breakfasts, lunches, team-building sessions and other events. The club also offers corporate memberships. While the club has been a Geelong meeting place since the late 1880s, many residents don’t even know it exists. Flanked by Westfield (one side is the carpark) and just a block from the water, it is so private that hundreds of people would walk past it each day without knowing. Visitors are greeted by a sweeping staircase that leads up to a library, committee room and dining room. Downstairs is a restaurant, member’s bar, dining room and billiards room, all beautifully decorated in step with the era of the building. Outside there’s a private English garden with a high wall covered in ivy, a magical spot for weddings and other events for up to 200 guests. Inside, the club can cater for 100 guests. It is little wonder the building with its Victorian balcony, high ceilings and opulent rooms, which look like they have come straight out of a Jane Austen novel, is such a hit with bridal parties. The Geelong Club hosts functions several times a week and demand is so high for weddings that only three weekends remain available this season. The club has several wedding bookings for the 2017/2018 season. Mandy Wright has been the full-time executive chef for the past six months and a chef for 20 years. The spring menu includes the grilled haloumi salad with heirloom tomatoes, asparagus, cranberries and balsamic; and a kangaroo fillet with corn puree, roasted eggplant and a blueberry and shiraz jus. The confit duck leg with nectarine, goat’s cheese and pomegranate salad is a highlight from the main list. ● JESSICA GABITES

ALL BOTTLED UP The National Bottle & Collectables Show is coming to Geelong for the first time, writes julia millard

ational and international collectors will flock to Geelong next weekend for the 45th National Bottle and Collectables Show. The show, presented by the Geelong Bottle & Collectables Club, is a first for Geelong. It will be held at the Geelong Showgrounds Agricultural Hall on October 21-23. Geelong Bottle & Collectables Club president David Smith says there will be collector displays, buying, selling, specialist auctions and appraisals as well as meals. “It’s the first time in Geelong. It’s been in other regional towns but never Geelong. We have been planning it for the last five years,” David says. “People just come along to see the displays, not necessarily to buy. There will be rarely seen items from private collections.”

14 DOMAIN GEELONG \ OCTOBER 20, 2016

David has lived in Geelong his entire life and enjoys collecting local items. He says about 40 Geelong companies will be on display, including Chas Cole, Meehans, Noddy’s, Franklins, Tee Vee, Bollington, Matthews and Priddle Brothers from Queenscliff. “There will also be companies from all over Australia showcased and some international brands,” he says. “The national show is a rare opportunity to see fantastic displays, get your items appraised and to buy from hundreds of selling tables.” David has been collecting for the past 35 years – an obsession that started while he was on holidays in Cairns and saw a blue bottle in a shop. “It really stood out to me and I’ve been collecting small bottles since,” he says. “The shop owner’s advice to me was to

collect what you enjoy looking at. It’s still good advice. It’s a passionate hobby. Some may say it’s obsessive compulsive.” David now has a collection of at least 3000 jars and bottles that he has found through eBay, auctions, bottle shows and swaps. “You eventually get to know your competition, they are people who bid against you, and you become friends,” David says.

“For me it’s the thrill of the hunt. And as you get deeper into it, items are harder to get and more expensive due to rarity.” David joined the Geelong Bottles & Collectables Club in 2008 and has been the president since 2009. The club, which started in 1983, has 25 members who meet once a month and share their latest finds. “I call it show and tell,” David says with a chuckle. “We discuss the research behind the item, its value and why it is significant. Plus there’s supper afterwards. “Everyone is welcome to join the club and any area of collecting is welcome. It’s not just antique bottles, we have collectors of everything – whisky and bar items, militaria, dolls, butter pats, coins, stamps, scales, insulators and much more.” ●

ood, lifestyle and wellness coach Andi Lew loves talking about health on TV and radio – and in her own kitchen. The bestselling author has just released her sixth book, Wellness Loading Loading, and runs cooking classes for people with food intolerances from the airy townhouse in St Kilda, where she lives with her six-year-old son, Beaudy. Personal touches and Beaudy’s toys add warmth to the modern, clean timber lines. Apart from the massive marble bench that she uses for cooking lessons, as a background for her videos and for entertaining, the main focus in the light-filled living space are colourful, abstract paintings by Andi herself. But they’ve got some stiff competition in the form of the sky views framed by high, expansive windows. A beachside soundtrack complements fair-weather skies. “In summer we can hear people screaming on the roller coasters at Luna Park,” Andi says. “I love falling asleep to the sound of people having fun.” ● LEEYONG SOO » Wellness Loading Loading, $29.95 (Heart to Heart Publishing) andilew.com

RUSTIC When it comes to lazy lunches and balmy nights dining outdoors, there’s no garden design more fitting than the rustic style. Jen Stumbles, co-owner of Eco Outdoor, says rustic style “speaks to our need for human moments that still feel stylish but effortless, because outside is often where the magic happens”. Evolution \ One of the main appeals of the rustic-style garden is that it’s designed to be lived in. “Outdoor spaces are now really about the life that goes on in them,” Jen says.

MODERN AUSTR ALIAN

How to put the style together \ Beauty in imperfection is an important element to remember when putting this look together. Focus on creating a lived-in feel, not a showcase.

The Australian garden should be welcoming, laid-back and encouraging of time spent outdoors. Stephanie Paterson, of The Outdoor Stylist, says this style is “sympathetic to our climate, water wise, diverse in foliage and complements almost any build aesthetic”.

Evolution \ While many Australians will be familiar with the traditional native garden, this style has evolved into a cleaner, more contemporary design. Stephanie distinguishes the modern Australian garden through its more elegant design elements. How to put the style together \ Stephanie turns to

TROPICAL You don’t need to live on a tropical island to create a resort-style garden. Tait creative director Susan Tait says this style is attainable for all budgets and a variety of outdoor spaces. “Introducing lots of lush greenery to our outdoor spaces is not hard to do, yet creates a tranquil oasis we can escape to and unwind,” she says. Evolution \ The tropical outdoor area provides the perfect place to sit back and relax. How to put the style together \ Susan suggests getting some advice from a local nursery about the best plants for your specific situation and then investing in two to three key plants. “Choose one for height or, if floor space is very limited, use your wall space and choose a hanging plant.” Essential elements \ ● lots of large-leafed green foliage ● brightly coloured lounge chairs and table ● a range of plant containers to introduce colour, pattern and height ● cushions to bring pattern and colour

colour and shape as the two main elements to put the garden together. It’s important to use a wide range of native plants that vary in size and texture. Keep furniture minimal and go for natural or monochrome colours.

BEST TIP

Essential elements \ ● use native plants with different heights and textures ● modern furniture with simple, clean lines ● environmentally sustainable features BEST TIP

With many different plants being used, careful planning is integral to this design.

hake up your interior palette this spring with pop colour accents. Dulux’s 2016 spring palette takes its cues from yesteryear, an energising Retro Remix of contrasting shades of blue and green, browns, charcoals, light pink, hot red and crisp white. Bree Leech, creative consultant and stylist for Dulux, gives us five tips for the look.

COLOUR WISE

Pink has become an interior staple this year. Lean towards mauve, pair it with a clashing colour and non-conventional furniture pieces to give it an edge.

THINK GRAPHIC

Energise the space with striking graphic features such as simple lines and

shapes that reflect retro influences from the post-modern era.

FRESH WHITE

White keeps the look fresh and provides a reference point for colour combinations.

MIX & MASH

Choose furniture in sculptural shapes such as mismatched side tables.

PLANT AN IDEA

Break hard lines by introducing plant life. Take inspiration from plants that were popular in the ’60s and ’70s that climb and drape or have interesting leaf shapes. ● mtay@theweeklyreview.com.au

Home away from home Worry-free, secure living is available in Newtown

C

hesterfield Supported Residential Service is a beautiful heritage mansion located in Newtown that has recently been renovated to provide a middle ground for those people who need some help with their day to day living, but want to retain their independence. Chesterfield is not an aged care facility where residents are locked in, but provides a safe and home-like environment for people who might be finding living by themselves is more and more challenging. Residents are independent and can come and go as they please. Many residents still drive and enjoy attending their local church and maintaining their involvement in the community. They can continue their usual activities and hobbies, but with peace of mind that they will be returning to a safe and caring environment with wonderful, qualified staff to assist if needed, 24 hours a day, seven days as week.

When residents Geoff and Gwenda decided with their family that they could no longer manage at home, they were attracted to Chesterfield due to its central Newtown location. “It is undoubtedly one of the best

decisions we have ever made Geoff says. “Since we have been here we have been very happy. The staff are very caring people with a genuine interest in the residents. Geoff is still driving so he and Gwenda often go out for the day. But they love

coming back to Chesterfield, where they feel part of a family. Independence is just as important for 92-year-old Florence. But, more importantly, she says: “My family are very happy with me being here and are grateful to know that I am happy and very well cared for.â€? Rooms at Chesterfield have en suites so residents can live privately and independently. Residents are encouraged to decorate their rooms with personal items so they feel at home. All meals are provided, and washing and ironing is done, so all aspects of day-to-day life are covered while allowing residents to continue an independent lifestyle. In addition, Chesterfield’s staff arrange regular outings and activities, and visits from hairdressers, manicurist, podiatrists and physiotherapists ensure residents are kept looking and feeling good. â—? ink sold stickers to show the Buxton group’s support for the Breast Cancer Foundation were going up all across Geelong on Saturday. Jarrod Leonard (Buxton Geelong East) got the ball rolling at 10 Edgecombe Street, Hamlyn Heights, where a crowd of 70 gathered outside the quirky two-storey, four-bedroom house with views across Corio Bay. “This house is rock-solid,’’ Jarrod said. “There is not a brick out of place, and one thing you’ll never lose is the view.’’ A man was quick to offer $470,000 and it was on. Three parties got involved and, at $600,000, the property was on the market. Two young couples were vying for the title. T After the 20th bid – $625,000 – the hammer came down. The winners, a couple from Manifold Heights, will make the property their home. Breast Cancer Foundation lolly packs were

popular at 91 Waratah Street, Geelong West, where Andy Ingham (Buxton Newtown) told the 45 onlookers they had a chance to buy a home in Geelong’s hottest suburb. “There is one thing constant, and that’s location,’’ Andy said before taking a bid of $430,000 for the three-bedroom weatherboard with scope for improvement. Again, three parties got involved and, when the hammer came down at $470,000, it was a young, local couple who got the prize. The pink sold sticker also went up at 9 Amundsen Street, Belmont, where Damian Mahoney (Buxton Geelong East) brought the hammer down at $515,000. The winner of the old two-bedroom house on almost 990 square metres was a local who will investigate development opportunities. The Buxton Highton office was also in the pink, with Tony T Moorfoot sealing a deal postauction at 2 Kardinia Street, Belmont. After passing in the three-bedroom weatherboard

at $470,000, Tony sold the property soon after to a former Geelong man who plans to return from Melbourne. Other agents also had a piece of the hot spring action, with Ian Nichols (Barry Plant Highton) taking charge at 109 Britannia Street, Geelong West. “There’s money to be made in this fantastic location,’’ Ian told the crowd of 35. Three parties fought it out to get to $440,000 before Ian passed in the two-bedroom house with plans approved for two townhouses. It later sold to a local developer. Back over in Hamlyn Heights, Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) adressed 40 onlookers at the immaculate three-bedroom brick house at 8 Rowe Street. “This house is quality throughout,’’ Joe said, before a two-horse race kicked off at $480,000. The hammer came down at $532,000, with a local family winning the battle. They intend to live at the property. ●

Buxton Geelong East’s Jarrod Leonard sold this custom-built house with views across Corio Bay for an impressive $625,000 at auction. The four-bedroom house has a northerly aspect and large living spaces. With some cosmetic updates, it could become an attractive family residence.

This his three-bedroom brick house was sold by Fruit Property’s Leigh Pridham for $388,500. In a quiet court and on a 668-square-metre block, it was designed for family living. It has a large living area, a good-sized kitchen and an expansive outdoor entertainment area.

HOUSE OF THE WEEK BELL POST HILL \ 23 KARDINIA DRIVE

A

s contemporary design goes, it doesn’t get much edgier than this. This Bell Post Hill house wows from the second you arrive and continues to impress right the way through, with bold, sophisticated style and sumptuous finishes. But perhaps most intriguing is that it’s also impressively practical, providing families with a great balance of cutting-edge and everyday living. Strong, angular lines create a striking facade, while recessed windows keep the overall look relatively minimalist. Despite being surrounded by equally impressive homes in this hillside estate, this one easily steals the limelight. Once inside, it’s the spectacular views across Corio Bay that take centre stage; they’re captured from a huge upstairs living area and expansive west-facing deck. The attention-grabbing finishes come thick and fast behind the double front doors of the architecturally-designed, split-level home. Glossy black floor tiles make for a dramatic entrance, but a ceiling void means the area is light and bright. There’s a grey stackstone feature wall behind a floating timber staircase, continuing the contrast of solid and space. Bedrooms two and three are down a short flight of stairs to one side of the entrance hall, with the fourth bedroom on the other side. Each has a built-in wardrobe, and they share the family bathroom, with separate bath and shower and classic black and white finishes. Timber stairs to the next level lead to a wide hallway, where the glossy floor tiles continue. Large sliding doors open it up to the deck, with water views that stretch to Curlewis. French doors at the end of the hall lead to a spacious open-plan zone. Its generous proportions impress, as do picture windows to the far end that take in the bay views. Again, the black floor tiles are brightened by natural light, which streams through walls of windows. A wood-burner adds warmth. The designer kitchen at the back of this area is a highlight on its own, with black granite benchtops and white joinery. There’s a large island bench with room for seating, as well as stainlesssteel appliances – including a double electric oven – and a walkin pantry. On the top floor is a second spacious living area, with polished floorboards and a private balcony. Like everything in this house, it has size on its side, but an ironing station on the wall is another insight into this residence’s attention-to-detail and air of practicality. There’s plenty of room to iron in the laundry, but why head down there when you can get chores done and enjoy a view? This second living area is also a likely parents’ retreat. It’s next door to the palatial main bedroom, which has a wall of built-in wardrobes and double doors to a luxury en suite. Metres from one of Geelong’s premier schools and just 10 minutes from central Geelong, this is an attractive family house that ticks all the boxes for modern living, and then some. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

Drumcondra is one of Geelong’s dream suburbs; it’s a beautiful pocket just blocks from the waterfront and minutes from the city. It’s also, for the most part, out of reach for the average buyer. But this character weatherboard house, ripe for renovation, provides an opportunity to turn that Drumcondra dream into a reality. In a wide, tree-lined street, the three-bedroom Californian bungalow is a blank canvas with plenty of room for an extension out the back. And the best bit? It’s completely liveable as is. It has three carpeted bedrooms, each with a built-in wardrobe. It also has a large living area, which opens to the meals area and kitchen. It’s been recently restumped and is on a 613-square-metre allotment, offering plenty of space for extension or a garden. This is the ultimate location for those who want the best of Geelong right on their doorstep. ● SARAH BIESKE

This four-bedroom house in Glastonbury Estate has plenty of appeal and is likely to interest family homebuyers and investors. The bones are strong but there is scope to modernise if desired. The floor plan offers spacious living and lounge zones, as well as a dining area and sizeable timber kitchen with island bench and doubledoor pantry. Three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes (one could work as a study) and the main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. With a bit of extra care and attention, the outdoor entertainment area would be a pleasure to spend time in. There’s space, privacy and room for kids to explore while the adults do their thing. The Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre is a short walk or drive down the hill, and Deakin University and Epworth Geelong are nearby. ● REBECCA THOMPSON

Location and potential are so often at the top of the “must have” list when searching for property. This house has both in spades. In ever-popular Herne Hill, the threebedroom residence is a blank canvas, waiting for someone to give it some love and attention. It already has polished timber floors and a flowing floor plan, and will present its new owners with plenty of options. Cosmetic updates might be enough to give it more

There’s a tandem garage at the end of the long driveway. But, without a doubt, one of the property’s biggest drawcards is its location. Schools and shops are within walking distance, while the ring road is also close. The city centre and waterfront are just a 10-minute drive. For those who love a weekend stroll or bike ride, the house is also within walking distance of the Barwon River and its tracks, along with the Fyansford Hotel. ● SARAH BIESKE

of a contemporary feel but a more adventurous buyer might decide to renovate from top to bottom. The entry hall opens to a large lounge with a sliding door to the kitchen and meals area. The three good-sized bedrooms have built-in wardrobes. The bathroom has a separate shower and bath, while the laundry at the back of the house has plenty of storage. A big backyard means there’s lots of room to create a dream garden. There’s also the potential to extend out or up.
