out for herself and her partner. Their property at Rye, on the Mornington Peninsula, acts as a retreat from the couple’s busy week. “I was working on a very large beach house (also on the peninsula) with builder Rod Curl (owner of Artform Builders). I was literally on site every week, thinking how much easier it would be having my own beach house, rather than travelling back to Melbourne after each inspection,” Ljiljana says. She chanced on a basic 1950s fibro shack, bought it and set about transforming it with Rod Curl into an idyllic coastal retreat. The shack was virtually gutted, with only a few elements such as the raked ceilings and chunky rafters, retained. While the Rye house is no longer a 1950s

cottage, it recalls some of the charm and simplicity of beach houses from the postwar period. On arrival, a generous deck leads directly to a simple and uncluttered kitchen. Limed oak joinery, with open shelves, is combined with timber-slatted boxes for storing items such as crockery. To loosely delineate the spaces, a few steps separate the kitchen from the living area. “I wanted a place that felt relaxed and welcoming – a place where you just want to pick up a book,” Ljiljana says. The timber-battened screens that create a veil to the guest wing allow dappled light as well as privacy. “Beach houses should be easy to maintain. You arrive, drop your bags and enjoy the place,” she says. ● NOVEMBER 24, 2016 \ DOMAIN GEELONG 7

Each surface you touch is pleasing, and you sink into the water and let your mind drift to a resting place. A day spa experience is one to savour, as they don’t come around very often. But what if you could get the look and feel of a luxury day spa in your own home? We asked Bates Smart interior designer Jan Eastwood, who designed the Isika Day Spa and hotel rooms at Crown Metropol, and the owner of luxury bathware company Apaiser, Belinda Try, for some tips on creating the day-spa feel at home.

Keeping colours simple is the best way to achieve a zen space, so your mind is not overstimulated by too many hues. “Keep the hard finishes to a very considered and enduring palate,” Jan says. She says light or dark colours are both suitable, but it’s best to keep the walls, floors and ceiling similar in tone, adding items such as towels, plants and flowers to brighten things up.

PERFECT YOUR PRODUCTS

The basin, bath, toilet and tapware should all be complementary – so, if you like round shapes, go with them all the way through. “It’s about choosing forms that are pleasing to you,” Jan says. Belinda says the feel of a bathroom product is as important as its aesthetic. “Ideally the space should embrace stone and timber to create a natural, organic feel that’s warm and luxurious to the touch.”

CUBBY HOUSEs might BE THE NEW STATUS SYMBOLs, WRITES NATALIE REILLY

orget Disney paraphernalia and the inflatable flamingo, the hottest trend for Christmas comes in the shape of elaborate, palatial cubby houses, complete with mailboxes and front porches. Think of them less as pretend play and more as a granny flat for your toddler. It used to be enough to set up a tepee in the corner of the lounge room and call it a day, but that’s over. The new cubby houses are made from high-quality, eco-friendly materials, and can include decking, gardens, sandpits, fences, bunting and even awnings. The half-baked hovels of your childhood they are not. Prices for such sweet abodes start at about $800 for a basic model and run all the way up to $2500 for a large cubby complete with pot plants. These are not the sort of dwellings your dad can make in a long weekend; they come from teams who erect any sort of design you put your mind to. And parents can’t get enough of them. Kellie Macpherson, chief executive of Castle and Cubby, says high demand for these next-level kid dwellings is what drove her and her husband to turn the construction and sale of basic little cubbies from a hobby on eBay three years ago to a legitimate business. They create and install detailed, decked-out miniature houses across Victoria and, now, in Sydney. “We initially thought we might only

make one cubby a month for a bit of play cash, [but] we were soon making one a week in the quiet times and this ramped up as soon as warmer weather hit,” Kellie says. She quickly identified the demand for stylised cubbies and began to add little extras, such as the beach box, milk bar and ice-cream shop models. The mother of two says the trend’s popularity is due to a combination of nostalgia, the DIY craze and anti-consumerist sentiment. “Handmade is huge right now,” she says, and it’s hard to argue against the appeal of such gorgeous little houses. We have

styled cubbies such as the farmers’ market, Brighton beach box, milk bar and ice-cream shop and they start from around $2100. We also do custom designs and hardly ever say no to a new idea.” Kellie puts the runaway popularity of the cubbies down to how well they photograph. Recently, media personality Zoe Foster Blake posted an Instagram photo of her son in a Castle and Cubby construction. Kellie says this had a huge impact on their business. But there’s also a practicality to the cubbies, she says. “As a parent, I know first-hand the guilt that comes from the piles of unloved

plastic toys. Their value to kids is fleeting and in a world of screens, consumerism and eco-awareness, it just doesn’t make sense to keep making those same mistakes and living with the guilt.” A recent survey seems to confirm this. More than 2000 Australian parents were asked what most concerned them about their kids’ health. “Too much screen time” topped the list, ahead of drug-taking and asthma. It makes sense that as tablets and smartphones compete for children’s attention

and desire to stay indoors, a super-cubby provides the best of both worlds. Kellie believes her rustic homes are a hit because “they remind the parents, [who were the] kids of the ’70s and ’80s, of their own childhood when cubbies were only ever handmade”. “In a world of excess and uncertainty, we are comforted by things that remind us of our safe and worry-free childhood; we want our children to experience the same bliss.” ● » castleandcubby.com.au

Confessions of a weekend rider

oon after I moved to Barwon Heads in 2003, Matt Farrell, my friend who took me to my first mountain-bike race some 13 years previously, was staying a few days with me. He’d just started riding again after university, so we decided to meet up with the local cycling group, outside Hendry Cycles in nearby Ocean Grove, at 8am. It was a very mixed group of people and personalities – doctors, dentists, students, the local policeman, the local councillors, a panel beater, a retired engineer who raced professionally for a short period, a physiotherapist, a landscape gardener, and one Tour de France hopeful (me). Everyone was very polite and respectful. They shared turns at the front, rotating through the group “Belgian style”. I went back the next morning, and the next and the next, and in the off season the

following year, and the next year, for 10 years. It gets me out of bed punctually and allows me to pass the first hour or two of my training in company. And, as for any group of weekend cyclists, it’s the allure of a coffee and a chat after the ride that can be the inspiration to get on our bikes together. I join them if my training allows, otherwise I go “to work” and continue my training ride. We meet at various locations, depending on how fast we want to ride and how social we feel. This is my connection to another part of the cycling world, my community and friends away from professional cycling. In February 2015, after the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, we meet up again. The landscape gardener and the policeman no longer ride, the physiotherapist has moved away, the retired engineer is not an elite-level

Masters cyclist any more, but everyone is still very polite and respectful, sharing turns at the front. The Tour de France hopeful has retired as well, but he has some stripes on his sleeves now, and a lot of stories to tell if anyone wants to talk about cycling, but no one usually does. The guys don’t ride as far or as fast now. But we still look after each other, we still make a mutual decision on which loop to do to suit each other’s desires. We race each other when we’re good, but when there’s a strong headwind or crosswind we ride tempo together. We make it hard for each other and we make it easy for each other, depending on who’s there and what shape and mood we’re all in. The not-so-young only follow me a little way down the Great Ocean Road. I meet others or continue on my own, not to train, just to be out on my bike. The Great Ocean Road, which stretches from Lorne to Portland on Victoria’s south coast, is one of the truly spectacular roads in the world. With its hairpins, gullies, occasional clifftop drops, and incredible scenery, it is a cyclist’s mecca. You ride along a winding road often just metres from the beach and the Southern Ocean. As you ride you smell the salt and hear the ocean’s roar. There is no protection from the wind, so the riding can be tough, but the scenery is so beautiful that you don’t mind. Sharing this with others is the essence of cycling, its great gift. ●

Wes and mandy have fulfilled their childhood dream of running a free-range egg farm, writes GAIL THOMAS

A

boyhood initiative to make pocket money has turned into a business for Wes Humpage. Back in 1990, when Wes was an enterprising nine-year-old, his pop suggested chickens, so he enlisted family and friends to build a large henhouse. Starting with just 10 chickens, WesEggs was born. Before long, Wes had 50 chickens clucking around the family’s small acreage in Leopold. He tended the coop, cared for his charges and developed profit and loss spreadsheets, budgeting for feed and buying more hens. At 18, Wes purchased his first house. That meant the temporary end of WesEggs, although he still dreamed of one day building a commercial free-range egg empire. Fast forward a few years, and that dream has now become a reality for Wes, his wife Mandy and their three sons Ted, Mack and Duke. The new chicken farm is on their 12-hectare property at Maude, which they bought 2½ years ago. WesEggs’ philosophy is to be an industry leader that is economically successful and socially responsible by using sustainable and

regenerative farming methods. “Our farming methods are highly focused on sustainable and regenerative farming practices, which means the production of our eggs uses farming techniques that improve the environment, protect public health, human communities and animal welfare,” says Mandy, who left a career in nursing to farm full time. “We are a 100-per cent chemical and toxin-free zone. The couple buy their hens at 16 weeks old from a grower in South Australia as they are not equipped to rear their own pullets. “The mobile hen houses are moved around the farm every four to seven days in a process called cell grazing,” Mandy says. “This allows them to forage all day on the pasture, living a natural life, and we also

They have the freedom to indulge in natural behaviours such as scratching, foraging for insects, flapping their wings and dust bathing. Then there’s Alfie the alpaca, who is the flock’s guardian. Alfie aids the birds’ welfare and reduces distress levels in the paddock; he protects his territory by stamping at or chasing and swiftly seeing off foxes, eagles or kangaroos with his piercing trademark angry calls. Alfie will soon be joined by two more alpacas to guard the expanding flock. “We candle (fertility check) and grade all of our own eggs and sell into some retail outlets and cafes,” Mandy says. “However, predominantly we offer a home delivery service around Geelong and the surrounding areas.” ● » WesEggs, 0417 056 656 » Stockists and further information: weseggs.com.au

A social historian, a fellow at Federation University, a musician, magistrate, author and doctor of philosophy to boot, he’s actually not very cranky at all. Mind you, he’s had his day putting up with enough to make him so – putting worthies and their likes in their place. Such as the magnificently named James Bond Maseku, a hapless, recidivist crook with a 007 title who came up against Terence when he was on the bench as a magistrate in a Zimbabwe jurisdiction. James had robbed a postman on his bike. Desperation, of course, but together with his priors, it earned him a sentence at the governor’s pleasure, with a minimum of seven years. He didn’t take kindly and bellowed his approbation from his cell beneath the court: “There’s no fecking justice!” To our parson’s

We are, however, assured such is the case by two well-known residents of this district, one of the gentlemen referred to having been a resident in the town for some time and during his stay one of the children was born. “The father and mother are what may be called thin people, and most of their children are in the same class. The youngest, a girl named Anna, aged seven, whose weight is 9st 2lbs [about 58kg], bids fair to develop into something taller and stouter than her sister. “The tent in which these phenomenal juveniles were exhibited was well patronised during the day. Their parents Mr and Mrs Snell, are about the average height and weight, and there seems to be nothing abnormal about the appearance of the other members of the family.” Terence FitzSimons has a couple more books waiting in the wings. One is about the goldfields-era aeronaut Charles Edward Brown, who captivated audiences in his hot-air balloons, overcoming gravity with fire and sails stitched together. Another book recounts the tale of a young Aboriginal boy – Thomas Bungaleena – raised in polite white society; so assured of his genteel status he didn’t consider himself black. Personally, I’m hoping he pens one on his personal experience with cannibalism. It seems during his African magistrate days Terence imbibed a confiscated witchdoctor’s brew made from various well-fermented ingredients, chiefly an unborn human foetus. Unwittingly, of course. “A little like the Irish poteen,” is all he says of the taste, citing the illicit potato drop of preference in God’s green land. “Fortunately, it tasted better.” ● 12879_10045102-02_a270ct@MMP

British gardening expert Isabelle Palmer shares her tips for making hanging gardens work I love the idea of hanging plants indoors, because you can really use your ingenuity and creativity. In many ways, a hanging display also functions as a work of art because you are creating a focal point in your home to show off your house plants. I have used a variety of hanging objects, from macrame pot-holders to metal hanging baskets – there really are no limitations to how you suspend your plants. Two of my favorite projects use simple picture frames to house a selection of mosses and succulents or to display air plants in an easy-to-build pink frame.

position or to replace common household objects. Here, where you would usually expect to see two lamps hanging above the table, I have used these baskets instead. Not only is this a really interesting way to display plants, but it also adds a lovely and unique touch to a dining setting. The wonderful thing about this idea is that you can also ring the changes to reflect the different plants in season, as well as to alter the style or effect you wish to create for a particular dining experience.

HANGING BASKETS

Hanging arrangements are a wonderfully creative way to display indoor plants. They create a fabulous point of interest in a living room, above a long table in a kitchen, or displayed in a hallway. This arrangement (pictured second from right) features lush, green, trailing hedera (ivy) and busy nephrolepis exaltata (Boston fern), both typically outdoor plants. Hanging baskets are sweet reminders of country cottages, white picket fences, and roses around the front door. Here, however, this bountiful hanging basket makes a wonderful contrast to the crisp white surroundings of the room. First, I took a hanging basket and removed the chain. I bought a longer chain from my local hardware store to create a much more dramatic effect. I then took the coir lining

Hanging planters are a wonderful way to display plants indoors, especially if you’re short of space. They make a great focal point, particularly hung over a table or kitchen work surface, as well as being a good spot for keeping herbs and other edible plants. The wooden struts of these containers (pictured left) are clean and almost Japanese in their simplicity. They don’t distract the eye from the main display on the table and also accentuate the clean lines of the kitchen. The plants, coleus “Wizard Jade” and vinca minor “Variegata” (variegated periwinkle), were planted first in plastic pots before being placed inside the wooden containers. One of the ways in which I like to use plants in the home is by placing them in an unusual

from the hanging basket and sprayed it black to match the ironwork. I usually water my hanging basket outside, giving it a good soaking and then allowing the excess water to drain away, to avoid damaging the floor.

HANGING BOTTLES

MACRAME HANGING POTS In the western hemisphere, macrame is thought to have originated among 13th-century weavers. These artisans knotted their excess thread and yarn to create decorative fringes on shawls, veils, and towels. Sailors then took up the craft while making objects at sea, and macrame spread to the New World.

For this creative project, I chose a trio of green-glass wine bottles. Recycling and reusing containers is a wonderful way to make the most of budget gardening. You really don’t need very much – just some ingenuity to create a lovely green picture. The lush greens and purples of the plants dripping out of the bottles work really well in a kitchen. They look great in any window, but particularly against the steel-framed window here, which is a lovely feature of this kitchen’s pantry. The plants used are begonia foliosa (fern begonia), hatiora salicornioides (dancing bones cactus), and ficus benjamina (weeping fig).

Although interest had faded after its revival in the 1970s, the craft is enjoying a new burst of popularity. The combination of terracotta pots and colorful macrame pot-holders is a stylish nod toward this regenerated trend. I used three simple terracotta pots and three brightly coloured macrame pot-holders from a small craft fair (look online for easy tutorials if you want to make one yourself). I planted the terracotta pots with exotic-looking guzmania, a type of bromeliad. If possible, use only rainwater or distilled water for these plants, rather than tap water, and water the central cup instead of the potting mix. ● editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

GEELONG MAUSOLEUM: STAGE 3 Pre-purchase off the plan

The tradition of above-ground entombment in a mausoleum, has existed for thousands of years. In many countries around the world, mausoleums are popular for their ability to commemorate and honour our loved ones in a place specifically designed for dignified repose. The Geelong Cemeteries Trust has built two beautiful public mausolea, each being architecturally designed with its own unique style and character, which allows the Barwon Region Community access to this distinguished form of final rest. Crypts in these two mausolea are nearly sold out, and a third and final mausoleum is planned to complete this project at the Geelong Eastern Cemetery. The new Mausoleum design will continue with the theme of high quality Italian granite, copper roof and coloured feature glass, and pre-purchasing the 105 crypts off the plan will now be offered to our community prior to

construction commencing mid-2017. By pre-purchasing off the plan, you will ensure your reservation in a preferred location in this third and final stage is secured at today’s price. An interest free payment plan is also available. For further information please contact our friendly administration staff.

The family had lived in the area for 20 years and love the location, but they are still working on the house they bought about eight years ago. “It’s a Victorian-era house, so it’s about 130 years old,” Tiffany says. “The floorboards were rotting, the oven door fell off when I was about to bake something and there was no back fence. That’s all fixed, but I’m currently slowly stripping off the paint in the entrance.” While still a “work in progress”, the house now has a homely, welcoming air and hosts an “eclectic” mix of objects, although most of Tiffany’s textiles and items related to design are housed at her Flinders Lane studio. ● LEEYONG SOO lsoo@theweeklyreview.com.au

M I S S O N I P L AT E S These Missoni plates apparently aren’t being produced any more so they might be collectors’ items in the future. I bought the black-and-white ones as a set and Richard bought me the coloured one. They’re specialoccasion plates and the kids aren’t allowed to touch them (laughs).

I bought this at Christine boutique as a treat before I opened my new store on Flinders Lane. I’d admired this Antwerp-based Thai designer for years and I fell in love with this piece so finally bit the bullet and bought it. It’s silicone, moulded in the shape of Swarovski crystals, with real crystals added.

DOG I’d always wanted a dog called Iggy Pop, that’s the reason for the name. She’s an English short-haired pointer, nearly two years old, and has a placid personality with hyperactivity thrown in. Next time we get a dog we want to call it Potus (President of the US … it’s a West Wing thing).

CUSHION

I used to compete in equestrian events at state level. I was in pony club but stopped riding when I was about 18. I wore these at the Royal Melbourne Show. I have a lot of pony club memories, such as the gymkhana fancy dress competition when I dressed my pony up as a flying saucer. I was a Martian in mum’s Melbourne Cup jacket and a helmet covered in foil. I made the pony’s costume out of a wire hoop and attached mum’s silver fabric to it to make a skirt.

Richard took this photograph a few years ago in Mexico when he was researching a cookbook. We collaborate quite a bit and I’ve used this picture in my homewares range for several years … I just love the perspective.

Instead of the traditional neutral taupes and greys used on French feature chairs, bring in a bold burst of colour, Greg says. A vivid blue looks great in a black and white scheme. Use pops of the colour in accessories to create a cohesive look.

Buyer’s advocate Tony Slack was quick out of the blocks with an opening bid of $400,000, enough for Dylan to announce the property was on the market. Dylan was soon fielding offers left, right and centre from eight parties. Offers were increasing in $1000, $2000 or $3000 increments. With the mark at $460,000, one bidder pulled the trigger and went to $465,000. But the action wasn’t over. There were another 12 bids to come, making a total of 41, before the hammer came down at $479,000. The winners were a young couple from Melbourne who plan to relocate. Just around the corner and up the road,

Dylan’s colleague, Andy Ingham (Buxton Newtown), also came up with the goods, guiding a four-way contest at 269 Church Street, Herne Hill. A crowd of 50 watched bidding open at $300,000 for the three-bedroom house on just under 690 square metres and go to $406,000 before Andy brought down the hammer. The winners were a couple of first-home buyers who plan to live at the property. Tony Moorfoot (Buxton Highton) also had success, selling 25 Morris Street, Belmont, under the hammer for $450,000. After a three-way contest, Tony sold the four-bedroom brick house, on a block of about 500 square metres, to an investor from the Bellarine Peninsula. At 57 Melbourne Road, Drumcondra, Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) faced a dozen onlookers. A quarter of them battled it out for the two-bedroom brick house in need of updating.

Bidding began at $300,000 and ended when Joe brought down the hammer at $390,000 in favour of a young woman from Melbourne who plans to relocate to the property. It was also an out-of-town buyer who got the chocolates at 59 Buckley Falls Road, Highton, a five-bedroom house on the edge of parkland and near walking tracks. Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant Highton) urged the 45 onlookers to think carefully. “I encourage you to consider the price of missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime,’’ he said. The property was passed in at $910,000 but sold soon after for $943,000. In a sign of the times, a developer snapped up 2 Hawthorn Avenue, Belmont, an ageing four-bedroom house on a block of about 960 square metres. Jason Barnett (Barnett) held court in front of a crowd of 40 as three parties vied for the prize, the hammer falling at $660,000. ●
