Pops of terracotta, emerald & navy

Pastels are so passe in 2017. While walls will remain a neutral canvas, homeowners are increasingly willing to experiment with pops of colour. Techne senior designer, Sarah Wolfendale says moody colours are coming into fashion – navy blue, terracotta and emerald tones. “Keep a neutral base but add colour with a statement couch and side table,” she says. “Try a terracotta side table and terracotta lamp and add a pop of colour with a rug. People are mixing colours more but coloured feature walls are not going to be as strong as they have been in the past.”

Spotlight on Styling
HOME STYLING
COMPARTMENTALISED SPACES Our long-running love affair with wide, open spaces is coming to an end. In 2017, it’s looking like designers will start to move away from open-plan living. WOWOWA Architecture director Monique Woodward says we will see “a focus on more specific and defined spaces”. “For example, there may be a more specific space designed for a dining table that will still have some connectivity to the kitchen but that still allows for a greater level of intimacy,” she says.
“I think that sense of intimacy was lost with the move towards endless, ambiguous spaces. Now we are turning towards creating a sense of intimacy in at least one or two spaces in the home. “This allows for more flexibility. You can have the kids in one space and an area where adults can see them from the dining table, or younger kids can be playing in the living space while an older sibling can be studying or doing homework in another space.”
Restoring period features In the ’90s, many old houses were stripped of skirtings and decorative cornices. In 2017, they will be celebrated and contrasted with modern, Scandinavian-style furniture.
Pinterest describes itself as “the world’s catalogue of ideas” and homeowners across Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula are turning to the online site for inspiration. “Largely due to Pinterest, people are understanding that their home reflects who they are. My clients often show me pictures of things they like on Pinterest, and they bring storyboards,” Sarah says. “It’s all about dressing the spaces around you. So, in a living room you can have a vase placed next to a small stone ornament next to another item – create a collection. Or maybe you have artwork on a wall above a sideboard with a vase sitting on it.” Styling doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. The homewares departments of mainstream stores, such as Kmart and Target, can be a treasure trove of Pinterest-style accessories that won’t break the bank.
Freestanding joinery Expect kitchen benches with feet details and kitchen cupboards with legs to further smooth the transition from kitchen to living space. Bathroom retreats Bigger bathrooms become a space to escape day-to-day living. Choose a freestanding bath in marble or white, a beautiful feature mirror and a timber stool or chair to add warmth. Bathroom tiling is monotone and calming.
CASCADING GREENERY The outdoors continues to move indoors with greenery forming an interior landscape. Monique recommends the Chinese money plant ((pilea pilea peperomioides peperomioides)) – one of her favourites to create what she refers to as “cascading greenery”. “I always try to get cascading greenery into a project to create that feeling of being within nature. Recently we used greenery in a massive deck and it cascades and dissolves into the garden,” she says. “Look for opportunities to create an amazing aspect onto a courtyard or garden or lightwell to create a feeling of space and help with natural light and cross-ventilation.” ● smarinos@theweeklyreview.com.au

bolder use of stone, splashes of colour and a shift away from open-plan living are emerging as key changes in the way we’ll plan and decorate our homes in the coming year. Whether your home is in Belmont, Bellarine or anywhere in between, we’ve got some expert ideas on how to embrace the latest in good design.
White Carrara marble has been a staple in kitchens for generations, but in 2017 the most on-trend kitchens will feature stone benchtops and splashbacks with more pronounced and contrasting grains, Techne Architecture senior interior designer Sarah Wolfendale says. “Stone will have more colour and stronger grains and be much more interesting – it’s not going to be as subtle. We’ll particularly see a lot of grey tones.” “We’ll also see kitchens dissolving the space between the kitchen area and the living area – so the bench spaces will more openly lead into living areas.”
Timber floors throughout There will be less carpet and more blond timber floors, including in bedrooms. They are practical and aesthetically appealing. Add colour and contrast with rugs.

swatch of fabric spied through the window of an antique shop in Rouen, France, on one of Catriona Rowntree’s many journeys was the starting point for her lovely conservatory. “There it was, my dream fabric, and I kind of matched everything from there,” says the much-loved presenter of the Nine Network’s Getaway program, plumping a cushion covered in a Pierre Frey Aloha print. The result is a room that is at once lush and light, and the undisputed centrepiece of the home Catriona shares with farmer husband James Pettit and their “two rambunctious sons” Andrew, 7, and five-year-old Charles. The 1870s bluestone house – the former manager’s cottage of a still thriving sheep and grain farm on the western plains outside Geelong – was somewhat dilapidated when the then-newlyweds took it on. “When you live in a property like this you are custodians, and we wanted to revel in the history of it, but apart from that we disagreed on just about everything,” Catriona laughs. “The result is a combination of my husband and me trying to come together with the pretty meeting the practical.” ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

I kept killing everything and my mother-in-law gave me one of Paul Bangay’s books and said, ‘H He lives nearby, if he can grow it so can you’. Paul and I are best of friends now, so that also helps. This is my favourite rose, the Double Delight, which came from my friend Ruth’s garden. It has the most amazing perfume.
I was forever looking for fabric the colour of grass because, for me, living here is about appreciating the outdoors. Adelaide Bragg (of Adelaide Bragg & Associates) sourced this Pierre Frey Shanghai fabric (a blend of cotton, linen, viscose and silk). The colour is Prairie. It’s perfect and won’t show Vegemite.

My father inherited this from his uncle, who drove it straight out of the showroom in 1965. When my father (Stephen) was very sick with cancer, we did it up as a project. He did not live to see the finished result, but every time I’m in that car I feel like I am getting a big hug from my dad.
It began with a couple of pieces, but then I went to an auction at Rene Rivkin’s home and a friend said, “Why don’t you put a bid on all the Lalique?”, and I accidentally got everything. Now I love to source pieces from auctions. I like the thrill of the chase.
These chooks are the ultimate example of the pretty meeting the practical. They lay the most beautiful palest blue eggs that are brilliant for baking. My dear friend Kate, my country woman role model, gave me my first chooks when my son was born.
TILES I was in the most romantic village in Portugal called Obidos, where they make beautiful ceramics. I don’t have a credit card, so I bought as many tiles as my last per diem (daily travel allowance) would allow and that I could physically put into the overhead locker. ith an aunt who was a professional ballet dancer, parents who are accomplished musicians on the world stage and a cousin who was a pro golfer, it’s no surprise that rich creative juices run through Alexander and Eugenie English’s veins. Their fancy footwork has helped 15-year-old Alex and 16-year-old Eugenie excel in fencing and dance respectively. “Alex and I have both done ballet, but I have now gone down the path away from frilly tutus to contemporary dance,” Eugenie says. “We are so light on our feet and move so quickly, and that’s a strength we got from ballet and our classical dance training. While Alex hasn’t been as seriously involved in
ballet, it has helped him gain agility on the piste, as fencing is a rhythmic sport.” The siblings study online through distance education, which allows more flexibility to pursue their artistic and musical passions – Alex also plays viola, while cello is Eugenie’s instrument of choice. “They don’t get their talent from anywhere in particular,” proud mum Helen O’Brien says. “It’s about setting up the right situation for them to excel and make the most of something they love, and listening to their teachers and coaches on getting to the next stage of their development.” Alex, who won the 2016 National Cadet (under 17) fencing title earlier this year, is a member of the Geelong Fencing Club. you have a knee collision or the like. My coach Vlad says, ‘You should be really confident; you’re not using real swords’.” Eugenie, who started dancing when she was about four, has taken a break from fencing to focus on year 12 studies. “I would like to be a contemporary choreographer and eventually get into a company to get experience. contemporary dance. There’s more scope and it suits who I am, physically and mentally,” she says. “With the Australian Ballet you see a pretty performance and are wowed by their perfection, but I like the open-endedness in contemporary dance.” All five of the English children have studied ballet, art and music, and have tried sports such as tennis, swimming, cricket or netball, as well as varied academic pursuits. Eugenie has a natural affinity for fine and performing arts, so literature, classics, film, music, photography and art are her areas of

trains with two coaches, Neil Hick in Geelong and Vlad Sher in Melbourne. Vlad is also the national epee coach. This year Alex also competed in the Fencing World Cup and the SEA Pacific Fencing Championships. He won gold in the 2016 Oceania Junior Championships as well as the junior nationals. Alex is ranked No.2 in Australia and No.1 in Victoria for fencing cadets. He hopes one day to compete at the Olympic Games. “I started with foil but epee is visually exciting and better for spectators than foil or sabre as you can understand the rules easier,” he says. “Wearing protective gear, I don’t get many bruises in competition; you only get hurt if
“I work mostly with teacher Paul Malek from Transit Dance, who is my biggest inspiration. He’s opened up the contemporary dance world in Melbourne, creating more opportunities for younger kids to express themselves as well as allowing them to develop, not just with tricks and skills but with movement vocabulary. A lot of it is auditioning, keeping an open mind as to what you like, and following your heart.” Last year Eugenie won a Darcey Bussell Genee. Named after the former prima ballerina of Britain’s Royal Ballet, the bursary enabled Eugenie to compete in the Genee International Ballet Competition in London. “After London, I decided classical ballet was not going to be my thing so I’ve re-focused on
study. Alex is much more interested in the sciences and will probably pursue a career in something like sports science. “I think Alex’s success in fencing is partly attributable to his early training in ballet,” Helen says. “The children are genuinely postmodern in their pursuit of sport, ballet or music: in the space of a day things can cycle through Pushkin, Prokofiev or Pokemon GO. “Alex also loves recreational mountain bike riding and fitness in general. The backyard looks like a weird art installation, but apparently it’s a do-it-yourself training circuit. I think I should have encouraged competitive ironing or cooking – the household would be a lot less dysfunctional.” ●

Melbourne’s second river crossing Quicker, more reliable travel for the west The Western Distributor means less congestion, a more efficient network, and shorter travel times to and from the west. • An alternative to the West Gate Bridge and second river crossing. • Wider West Gate Freeway. • A new road tunnel under Yarraville. • Better access to the port. • Smart roadway technology, including Automatic Incident Detection and Lane Use Management Signs, extending the managed motorway along the M1. • Major new cycling and walking paths. Melbourne’s west is developing rapidly. The City of Wyndham is one of the fastest growing local government areas in the state, with a population forecast to reach more than 350,000 people by 2031. The Western Distributor will add the capacity needed to support this expansion. Construction starts in late 2017 and the new connections will be open to traffic in 2022.

plan to purchase wisely Eleanor Tabone weighs up The Benefits & pitfalls of “off the plan”
B
The risks
uying off the plan simply means buying a property that hasn’t yet been built. It can sometimes be a more flexible and affordable option than buying an existing home. For some, the excitement of being the first person to live in a residence and plan the colour schemes and decorations is appealing. But, there are also some pitfalls to watch out for.
Falling property market \ There’s a risk that you might pay too much for a property if the market falls between the exchange of contracts and building completion. Failed expectations \ Many builders don’t let you see the property until construction is complete. This means there’s a risk that what you envisioned won’t be what you receive, and the quality might not meet your standards. Ask for regular updates and inspections to ensure you get what you asked for. Rising interest rates \ Interest rates could increase before you settle. This could be a problem if you wanted a fixed loan. Bankruptcy \ A developer could go into liquidation before the project is completed. Choose your developer carefully and make sure you do your research thoroughly.
The benefits
inspect displays, models & plans &
(ISTOCK)
A locked-in price \ You pay the current market price for a property, even though it will be completed in the future. Securing a high-value asset for a low initial capital outlay \ While a deposit is made, the entire payment is not due until the property has been built. This provides you with time to organise your finances and sell your existing house without the need for bridging finance. Increase in property value \ If the market experiences growth, the property you purchase off the plan today might increase in value when you settle. Tax advantages \ For investors, it’s possible to claim depreciation on tax for fixtures and fittings. Stamp duty savings \ Some state governments offer bonuses and reductions on stamp duty for buying off the plan. Builder’s guarantee \ Newly built properties come with a seven-year builder’s guarantee. This means any structural or interior faults in that time must be repaired by the builder.
investigate the fittings
Buying off the plan has its pros and cons, but remember, before you sign anything, visit the property site and check out the location. Do this during the day and at night. Inspect displays, models and plans and investigate fixtures, fittings and finishes. Research the developer and the market conditions and speak to an expert to determine if buying off the plan is best for you. ●

Marcel Gasking share’s his top tips for creating a relaxing space.
1
Find a rug that complements the tones in your room. This will create a sense of comfort and frame the space.
2
Select an armchair, using a sumptuous fabric that feels like it envelops you when you sit in it. Rich velvets for a warming environment or a soft leather for a more contemporary look are great options.
3
Think about your colour tones and add some pattern that will give highlights to the space. Bold cushions with texture are a clever way to add interest. Mix up cushion sizes to create depth and contrast.
4
Including a side table in your cosy corner will help add proportion to the space. A tall side table with a lamp next to the armchair creates ambience and light.
5
Add accessories such as a bookshelf, a vase of flowers or a piece of art to complete the corner and make it a perfect escape.

REPORTED HIGHEST GEELONG TOP 5 HOUSE SALES
$1,170,000
f records were to be broken on Saturday, where better for them to fall than in Highton’s “Olympic’’ estate? Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant Highton) rolled up outside 6 Strickland Avenue and told the 30 onlookers that the three-bedroom brick house was the sort of place that “epitomised the very foundation of Highton’’. Buyer’s advocate Tony Slack shouted out an opening bid of $480,000 and a two-horse race unfolded. Tony was still in front when the hammer came down at $561,000. He was bidding on behalf of a Melbourne family who liked the house and its school zone. Kieron said the selling price broke the estate’s record “by a mile’’. Other results on the day might not have set new marks, but they were still well above reserve. Tom Butters (Buxton Newtown) did his bit, first selling a three-bedroom brick house at 9 Wirksworth Street, Herne Hill. He guided a four-way contest in front of a

crowd of 65, starting at $340,000 and bringing the hammer down at $415,500. The winners were local investors. Later on, at 46 Marshall Street, Newtown, 70 onlookers gathered to see him put the three-bedroom brick house up for sale. “The secret’s out,’’ Tom said. “Someone’s been telling them in Melbourne [about Geelong’s real-estate market] and they keep coming down.’’ He took an opening offer of $620,000, enough to put the property on the market straightaway. A three-way contest ensued and went to $685,000 before Tom brought the hammer down in favour of a woman from Little River. Tom’s colleague Dylan Taggert (Buxton Newtown) was back in the Geelong West cauldron, this time outside 1 Hector Street, a three-bedroom character weatherboard. An opening bid of $440,000 kicked off a three-way battle that eventually morphed
into a tug-of-war between two men who just wouldn’t give up. Increments reduced from $5000 to $2500, then $1000, down to $250 and finally $100. Forty-three bids were fielded by Dylan, peppered by numerous exchanges between the two men, before one of them relented. The final mark was $496,000. It was another big day for the agency, Matt Plunkett (Buxton Newtown) guiding a two-way contest for the three-bedroom ageing Edwardian at 44 Saffron Street, Newtown. Bidding began at $480,000 and ended at $550,000, well above reserve. East Geelong is also hot property, Jason Barnett (Barnett) selling 12 Grey Street, a three-bedroom character weatherboard, to an investor from Canberra for $560,000. The young man was part of a three-way contest that began with a vendor bid of $450,000. He was in front when Jason brought the hammer down after 18 bids. ●

Barry Plant South Barwon’s Kieron Hunter knocked down the hammer at $561,000 for 6 Strickland Avenue, which was $51,000 above reserve. The three-bedroom house is in a top location, with the Porter Avenue shops and Highton Village close by. ●
The team at Harcourts North Geelong sold 7 Fairy Street at auction on Saturday for $405,000. The weatherboard house is on a 975-square-metre block with bay views and is minutes from the ring road and walking distance to the Hughes Street shops. ●
HOUSE OF THE WEEK HIGHTON \ 5 ADMIRAL COURT
A
s architects go, few names hold as much significance as Frank Lloyd Wright’s. Recognised as one of the greatest American architects for his work in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Wright was renowned for his passion for designing structures at one with their environment. His trademark style was the inspiration behind this residence high in Highton’s hills and on the edge of the cliffs towering above the Barwon River. The house itself is spectacular, with more than 650 square metres of luxury living. But it’s the way the house showcases the breathtaking location that really impresses. In fact, you get the feeling Frank Lloyd Wright would be somewhat chuffed to have played a role in a creation such as this. Near the end of a court, the house is private and set behind a high fence. A courtyard with a spa and paved with Grampian sandstone leads to the front door, with leafy surrounds creating a relaxed ambience. Inside, you’re hit with the extravagance of the house, which sprawls over two levels. Huge floor-to-ceiling windows extend along the back, revealing the panoramic backdrop. Few houses offer such a clear view of the river and its surrounding bushland – it’s a pretty spectacular backyard. The entrance extends to a hallway on one side, which overlooks the main living area and formal dining area down below. It leads to four of the five bedrooms on this level, each with built-in wardrobes, along with the main bathroom. The four bedrooms open to a deck in the front courtyard. The indulgent main bedroom is at the other end of the house and has builtin wardrobes and a luxury en suite with marble floor and wall tiles and a freestanding bath. French doors open the bedroom to a private balcony among the treetops. The home office next door shares the balcony. Downstairs is a sixth bedroom with an en suite and its own balcony. Timber stairs opposite the entrance take you to the open-plan living area and dining area, a grand space filled with light thanks to a huge ceiling void, yet made intimate by a fireplace. Oversized double doors lead to an outdoor entertainment area, also paved in Grampian sandstone. It steps down to a deck. With the river in full view, it’s the ultimate spot to impress guests. There’s a billiard room to one side of the open-plan living zone, with curved windows once again showcasing the river. To the other side of the main living area is a designer kitchen and an informal meals and living space. The kitchen has European appliances, including a gas cooktop, 900-millimetre wall oven, two dishwashers and a Vintec wine fridge. There’s also a handy dumb waiter from the garage to the pantry. Tallowwood parquetry floors are used throughout the meals and living area, along with the billiard room. The main living area is carpeted. Electric awnings back and front ensure the outdoor areas are shaded on warm days, while the house has gas heating and cooling. Pakington Street and central Geelong are a short drive away, as are some of the region’s most prestigious schools. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

This Victorian-inspired house really does have it all – size, style and bucketloads of character. In a quiet court and on a 1480 square-metre block, it balances period style with contemporary needs. Central to the house is an open-plan living zone with a French provincial-style kitchen at its centre. The kitchen has a black Smeg cooker, timber cabinetry and granite benchtops. It has a meals area on one side and the living area on the other. Beyond the living area, timber floors step up to a spacious rumpus, but it’s the formal lounge with fireplace at the front of the house that really pulls at the heart strings. The main bedroom is also at the front of the house and has an en suite and walk-in wardrobe. The covered outdoor entertainment area is surrounded by a thriving garden, while the double garage at the back of the block also has an office and music room. ● SARAH BIESKE
