AGENT’S VIEW RENEE REYNOLDS \ Director, Release Property Management Started out \ It was 15 years ago, when I bought my first investment property and managed it myself. I really liked the process of it and it made me complete my agent’s rep certificate to get into property management. I started my own business nine years ago and it’s the best thing I’ve done. Best part of the job \ It’s changed over the years. The best part now is to develop careers for the staff and to continue to grow the business. We have two offices now and it’s all been organically grown. Geelong’s property hot spot \ Areas of development, so Geelong West and Hamlyn Heights and even moving out towards Bell Park and Bell Post Hill because of their location and big blocks. In the past five years, there has been a significant increase in investors, both local and interstate. My favourite place? Pakington Street; I love the cafes and restaurants. On days off I like to … spend time with family, take the dog for a walk, often along the waterfront. ●

nce upon a time, designers sneered that the main style Geelong conjured was industrial chic. These days our interiors are in no way inferior. With more than 2000 new houses going up each year, as people choose to move to Victoria’s second city for a better way of life, Geelong has become one of the hottest markets for homewares. FRANKIE SAY RELAX

STYLE FOR SALE

JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS, SARAH HARRIS CHECKS OUT GEELONG’S MOST STYLISH HOMEWARES STORES

Lily Pond

Frankie Say Relax

This tres chic emporium of French antique furniture and homewares, at the Paris end of Moorabool Street, has been a destination for the discerning for 16 years.

Relax Relax was the debut single released by the hit 1980s British band Frankie Goes to Hollywood and this lovely warm hug of a homewares shop, with its emphasis on natural fibres, organic shapes and texture, is the place to do just that.

Who’s behind the counter? Avowed Francophiles Kim West and Kim West, a husband and wife team who sign themselves Mrs Kim and Mr Kim to avoid confusion, are assisted with elan by their daughter Rosanna and staff.

Who’s behind the counter? Rebecca Feldman had always dreamt of having a homewares shop. After four kids, she went back to school to get interior design qualifications before opening Frankie Say Relax two years ago.

What’s in store? Mr and Mrs Kim travel to France at least twice a year to source fabulous furniture pieces offset by decorative accessories from near and far. You will find local brands such as Marble Basics alongside Astier de Villatte ceramics from Paris and antique copper pots from Normandy. At this time of year, it looks like all your home decorating Christmases have come at once, with beautiful trees and seasonal ornaments. Who is buying? Lovers of French style, travellers and people who just like nice things. “We do get a lot of people coming from Melbourne and they are forever asking, when are we going to open up in Melbourne. But there can’t be more than one of us, that’s what makes it special,” Mrs Kim says. ● ● 303 Moorabool Street, Geelong ● 5224 2228 ● lilypond.net.au

Our pick

Turn any item into a stunning centrepiece with reproduction glass cloches starting at $49.95, ranging up to extra-large antique French originals for $495. ●

What’s in store? The store reflects Rebecca’s personal aesthetic. “It is natural things that I go for. Things that are organic, even a little bit rustic, with warmth and a bit of character, like the beautiful Marmoset Found ceramics,” Rebecca says. “We have a lot of timber, wool, linen, leather and photographic prints, which are very popular.” Candles are also a top-seller, particularly Cocolux (coconut wax) and Maison Blanche brands. LILY POND

Who is buying? This is a shop that really speaks to people who are less interested in following trends than creating a warm feel using natural textures and organic shapes. ●

Our pick

Every day starts freshly minted with these Robert Gordon – Hardware Lane latte cups. Pretty and practical to pop under the tree at $30 for a set of four. ● ● 141 Shannon Avenue, Manifold Heights ● 5222 4682 ● frankiesayrelax.store CONTINUES » P8 DECEMBER 8, 2016 \ DOMAIN GEELONG 7

STYLE FOR SALE sassica + salter It takes a lot of sass to grow an independent business in the highly competitive field of homewares. Cleverly curated content is key and one of the reasons this shop has featured in influential blogs such as The Design Files. Who’s behind the counter? Sassica Salter opened her eponymous store in 2010, having stepped from behind the pages of Home Beautiful, Better Homes & Gardens Gardens and Donna Hay magazines, where she worked until having her first child. “I knew the commute had to end for my family,” Sass says. What’s in store? There’s everything from classic Le Creuset cookware to natural cleaning products, but the bestseller at the moment is Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. Workshops are held in-store so customers can learn how to use the paint, which can be used on anything from concrete to glass without undercoat or primer.

Our pick The persimmon and copal (aromatic resin) candles from Voluspa are heaven scent, but just one of many fragrant blends. Prices range from $19.95 for 25 hours to $49.95 for 100 hours. ●

Ampersand After starting life in a tiny, cramped store, Ampersand graduated mid-year to a gallery-style showroom with funky styled spaces so you can actually envisage how products might look in your home. Who’s behind the counter? Jon Davis is a third-generation Geelong retailer who grew up in the landmark business Geoffreys Kitchen & Gifts. Three years ago Jon, his partner Billie Dewar and relative Trish McCormack added their own flavour to the Pakington Street mix with Ampersand.

(MICHAEL RAYNER)

What’s in store? Now that they can actually fit it in, there’s furniture from GlobeWest, Satara, Space to Create, MRD Home and big colourful artworks by Greenhouse Interiors artist Prudence Caroline. Complete the picture with soft furnishings, bedding and table-top decorator pieces with the help of interior design-trained Trish. Who is buying? Colour, cheer and affordability are the bywords here. “We appeal to new-home buyers, but also to people who just want to freshen up existing rooms or are looking for easy interchangeable options that can make their homes bright and individual without spending too much,” Billie says. ● ● 117 Pakington Street, Geelong West ● 0406 109 769 ● @ampersandgeelong

DAN & CARLEEN \ DECO INSPIRAT A ION AT

INTERIOR STYLIST AND the block 2015 champion, DEA JOLLY, sizes up WHere this season’s CONTESTANTS went wrong

T

12 DOMAIN GEELONG \ DECEMBER 8, 2016

1

I would not have attempted to create an art deco apartment without understanding what art deco is. It is not an easy style to interpret and it does require some research to pull it off successfully. We have seen every style from industrial to Hamptons this season, when just a subtle nod to the glamour and sophistication of art deco, combined with a clean, contemporary style would have been a perfect fit.

2 (SUPPLIED)

his season’s series of The Block is done and dusted. Last month’s auctions were a huge success, especially for engaged couple Will Bethune and Karlie Cicero, who emerged victorious, selling their ground-floor apartment for a whopping $2.6 million and walking away with a record $815,000 in winnings. Each apartment this season was unique and each had its own pros and cons. Will and Karlie’s had enormously high ceilings and a grassed outdoor area but were on the bottom level, where the light is compromised by surrounding buildings. Geelong’s Ben and Andy cleverly included an extra bedroom and bathroom in their floor plan but some of their design and styling choices were polarising. Julia and Sasha had plenty of light and the best view, but their lower ceiling height and super feminine styling could have alienated some buyers. In fact, most of the contestants struggled with some of their styling choices. What could the contestants have done differently? Here are six things on this season of the The Block that I would have done differently. ●

DAN & CARLEEN \ CONCRETE-LOOK TILES AT A ODDS WITH THE ART DECO TOUCHES

Dan and Carleen’s decision not to include underfloor heating was an oversight in chilly Melbourne. Also, the industrial, concrete-look tiles in the living/dining/ kitchen space were at odds with the art deco touches they managed to successfully incorporate throughout their apartment.

3

Ben and Andy were a step ahead when they decided to turn a huge en suite and loggia into a fourth bedroom leading to a study space.

But less successful was their decision to give two bedrooms access to the study space, which made it feel like more of a walkway that neither of the occupants of the bedrooms would actually use. I believe it would have been better to close the entrance door from one of the bedrooms and make it a small en suite for the other.

4

Generally speaking, I would have taken more risks with artwork, styling, colours, furniture, lighting and finishes. There were quite a few things that we have seen before. As a viewer, I love to see new ideas and style for inspiration.

5

This season the couples struggled with design consistency.

6

Some couples were more successful than others with their room layouts. I would have given much more thought to the position of the furniture in each room, as well as to where everything sits in the bathrooms and how the kitchen functions. Kim and Chris might have been better to include the bath inside the en suite to take up some of the vast unused space, and Julia and Sasha’s kitchen island bench would have benefited from an extra 60-plus centimetres in length, which would have helped their oversized gas cooktop feel less overwhelming. ●

(SUPPLIED)

From Dan and Carleen’s original timber doors mixed with modern P50 architraves and skirting boards, to Kim and Chris’ industrial exposed red-brick walls combined with the softness of their contemporary main suite, some of the choices just didn’t make sense together. If art deco cornices are featured in one room then they should flow throughout the apartment.

CHRIS & KIM \ SOME CHOICES DIDN’T MAKE SENSE

“a subtle nod to art deco combined with a contemporary style would have been a perfect fit.”

onya Beechey is more doer than talker. She’s a musician, a flute and piano player, who’s been helping people on their last legs make sense of their life’s achievements and set a legacy – all in a written document – for their loved ones as they depart this mortal coil. It’s a tough gig – challenging and emotional – and she’s new to it as well. But in many ways, it’s a job she has been gearing up to her whole life. This work – she calls it dignity therapy – is not Tonya’s bread and butter job, she’s a volunteer at this point, albeit a rare and valued one. Normally, she teaches music to very young kids. It’s something that sets them up for later life on various fronts. As Tonya puts it: “It’s the perfect tool to learn stuff and they don’t even realise that it’s connecting brains and neurones. There’s lots of research that shows kids who do music in the early years of their life are actually better off academically later down the track, with a lot better ways of coping, with lateral thinking skills.” At 41, the mother of two and stepmum to three more has worked up a few lateral skills herself. Inspiring: Tonya Beechey in her home studio. Bold beginning: Press clippings of her arrival in A AYNE R) Australia 41 years ago. (MICHAEL RAYNE

Tonya was one of some 200 infants and babes – the children of dead or desperate parents – hustled on to two planes in cardboard shoeboxes, and airlifted out of Saigon. Horrifyingly, one of the planes crashed. Luckily for Tonya, she was on the other. She had two birth certificates – no one’s too sure if either was actually correct – and her adoptive-parents-to-be waiting in Australia were expecting a little Cambodian girl who, Tonya, says wound up in Canada instead.

s a m t s Chri t e f f u B

If anyone’s qualified to have an identity crisis, it might be Tonya. But she grew up happily, soundly, in suburban Geelong. She ventured to Vietnam for the first time only recently. It’s not been an issue. She’s more about forward than behind. “I believe that out of tragedy there can be sunshine again,” Tonya says. “We can’t change the circumstances that happen to us but I totally believe we can change our attitude to them and I vowed to do that when Richard passed away – and to show the kids.” She’s the first to acknowledge she’s done it hard, messed up along the way and struggled and fought back to a decent frame of mind – with a little help from her friends – and her upbeat assault on chewing life’s gristle qualifies her for her station helping terminally ill people exit this vale of tears. “I want to give back and I can give back,” she says, a broad grin on her face. “Earlier, it was very raw, quite confronting, emotional. But the amazing thing I found is we come into these people’s lives as strangers, at a very vulnerable time. They tell us their most intimate details. We enter as strangers and become friends, it’s very rewarding.” As Tonya’s day 192 Facebook pearl says: “Emotional resilience is understanding the rain is inevitable … but getting wet is optional.” ●

Award-winning landscape designer Daniel Tyrrell weighs up the best options for your patch of green

hard-wearing and self-repairing, you might well conclude this is the turf for you and the Australian summer. But, although it is a beautiful lawn, we no longer have the water to dump on fescues throughout summer – which is what this variety needs to look good. As for its ability to self-repair, I give it a two out of 10. These days I wouldn’t recommend these varieties for our gardens.

S

o you’ve moved into your new house, and the lawn isn’t what you remembered it was when you bought the place. Or you’re selling and want to clear up that dirt patch before the sales campaign begins. Creating or repairing a lawn can be overwhelming when faced with so many varieties of grass on the market, not to mention taking into account on issues such as going maintenance and the role the lawn will need to play for kids and pets. An ever-impatient consumer society has us wanting things instantly, and an instant lawn is no exception. Fortunately, advances in lawn varieties now mean you can avoid the pain of defending virgin turf from the prying beaks of birds waiting to feast on your lawn seed. It’s also important to consider water storage and available usage. With our heightened concern for saving this precious resource, lawn selection has become crucial.

My choice \ Fine-leaf buffalo The myriad fine-leaf buffalos are, in my experience, by far the best products on the market. They are ideal for full sun, require little water and make one of the better lawns for shady areas. They will repair themselves and generally require less maintenance than other varieties. Green thumb up for this one. If none of these are for you and you like the sound of green-painted concrete, then there is always synthetic turf. I hate to say it, but it’s not bad these days and definitely has a place with its year-round green colour, drought tolerance and essentially maintenance-free aspects. But, despite all these pros, it is still fake and doesn’t have the same feel a living, breathing patch of green brings to a garden space. Happy mowing … ● » danieltyrrell.com.au

DOLL A fan had this made in New York for me – he sent it to me. I thought “how gorgeous is that, the effort?”. It was very sweet, and I loved it. The workmanship is great. I sent him a fragrance and a book as a big thank-you.

SHOES

(STEPHEN McKENZIE)

Season 2 of Real Housewives (February 2015) was when I introduced my shoe range. Shoes have to be comfortable and I know mine don’t look comfortable but they are. They have to be sexy, blingy. My influence is Sergio Rossi shoes, but they’re $1200-$1400 a pair. I’ve taken that shoe in my mind’s eye and developed a range thinking I would like to be able to make these shoes at a more affordable price.

vid fans of Real Housewives of Melbourne know they get mere glimpses of Gina Liano’s home on screen. Although she lives in the reality TV spotlight, the barrister, author, and now fragrance and shoewear entrepreneur, guards her privacy zealously. Home is an intimate space. The four-bedroom, three-storey townhouse in Toorak, styled after an Italian maisonette, is a voyage of discovery. “It’s got the ceiling height of a Victorian home but, if you stand at the back door, you feel like you’re in Tuscany,” Gina says. The family moved in two years ago and Gina loves the location. She says she hasn’t done a lot of decoration, “because we’re

filming, with cameras and lighting. I’ve had to leave that front room (where she does to-camera segments for the series) pretty simple.” Instead, she populates the rooms – glossy black kitchen, parquetry flooring, sweeping staircase – with furnishings she loves. “I like things that are a bit traditional. I like glamorous things. I don’t mind a bit of gold leaf, a bit of silver leaf.” With two sons and two dogs in the house, Gina says she spends time in her bedroom when she can. “I’ve got a balcony up there, an en suite, a walk-in wardrobe. I’ve got lots of room up there for grooming, having a rest, watching TV.” ● MIRANDA TAY mtay@theweeklyreview.com.au » Fearless by Gina Liano retails exclusively at Chemist Warehouse, $39.99 100ml.

MIRROR I’ve been going to Mirror Mirror on Hoddle Street for years. That mirror was $1700 reduced to $350. They have the best sales, they always look after me. We went past the other day and found that there, and I just said, yup. I think it’s so glamorous.

CHAIR I got this at Robertsons. I’ve got a black linen bedhead so it matches and it looks good with an ottoman. It ties in really nicely. And I love the fact that it’s a bit masculine.

DOGS F E A R L E S S : M Y L I F E M Y WAY I presented one part of a chapter to Hardie Grant. They wanted it published for Mother’s Day last year … I signed the contract on December 9. I was filming until December 15, so I [had] nine days to deadline. I thought how many words does a book need? It’s about 80,000; I’m just going to have to write 10,000 words a day. But it actually came out quite good because it’s in one voice. It’s an easy read. I didn’t have to research it – it was all there in my head. I wrote it like I speak, it’s like a narrative.

I’ve had dogs my whole life. Ninja’s a toy poodle crossed with a lab. Noodles is a cavoodle. We got Ninja six years ago after my Maltese poodle passed away at 14. We fell in love with Ninja, he looked like a teddy bear. One of Josh’s (Gina’s assistant) friends told me that there were puppies at the pet store in South Yarra … so we went in and there was Noodles in the cage all by himself and we got him out, and he was a big rascal.

FEARLESS BY GINA LIANO I’ve just released my second fragrance, called Fearless by Gina Liano. The base is amber and vanilla, cedarwood and iris. When I developed Fearless I thought of the sensuality. It’s summer, so it’s going to be hot. I thought of what it was going to smell like on the skin if you’re going to dance … or what it smells like on a man if it transfers onto him and it smells beautiful. HOT PROPERTY t’s cricket season and a half-century is always considered a good knock. Andy Ingham (Buxton Newtown) certainly made his mark at the crease on Saturday, fielding more than 50 bids at 39 Lascelles A Avenue, Manifold Heights, in front of a crowd of 45. Andy took an opening bid of $350,000 for the three-bedroom weatherboard that was up for sale for the first time in more than 70 years. He responded with a vendor bid of $400,000 and soon it was on for young and old. A four-way contest unfolded and by the $470,000 mark the property was on the market. Offers kept rolling in, with one bidder insisting on increments of $1000. “I’ll make you work for it,’’ he said to Andy. That he did, the auctioneer finally bringing the hammer down after 54 bids at $567,000. The winner was a young woman from Melbourne who plans to eventually relocate.

STANDOUT SALES

WITH PAUL CH A PPLE

Tony Moorfoot (Buxton Highton) also had plenty of work to do at 8 Glamis Street, Newtown, a solid, ageing, three-bedroom brick house on a block of about 750 square metres. It was up for sale for the first time in 50 years. “Once you’re in here (the neighbourhood), you don’t leave,’’ Tony said. A five-way contest kicked off at $450,000 and passed $500,000 in a flash. When the third bidder entered at $505,000, Tony was able to pause. “We are well and truly past reserve,’’ he told the 55 onlookers. The mark kept building and after the 27th bid the hammer came down at $580,000. The winners were a young Melbourne couple, originally from Geelong, who plan to return to their home town. Tony followed up later at 4 Cambridge Street, Belmont, a three-bedroom updated house close to High Street and schools. Forty onlookers saw a three-way contest

begin with a vendor bid of $380,000. The property was on the market at $420,000 and the hammer fell at $470,000, the prize going to a local investor. In Newtown, Tom Butters (Buxton Newtown) faced a crowd of 50 outside 21 Retreat Road, a five-bedroom 1920s Californian bungalow with rear-lane access. The property was being offered for the first time in 54 years, prompting Tom to quip that back then a glass of beer at the nearby Gold Diggers Arms was just 13 cents. “No one moves from here,’’ he said. “Why would you? What a location.’’ A man was quick to offer $1 million and Tom was just as quick to respond with vendor bid of $1.1 million. Three parties showed interest before the property was passed in on a live bid of $1.26 million. The final bidder soon had the prize for an undisclosed price. The new owners are a young family. ●

HOUSE OF THE WEEK LOVELY BANKS \ 7-13 VIEWHILL ROAD

Y

ou really do feel like royalty in this peaceful pocket of Lovely Banks. The houses are sprawling and so is the land. And the best bit? As you sit serenely atop this hill, you look down on your kingdom below, with stunning views across Corio Bay and the city. It’s the perfect location for those seeking a quieter life without losing city conveniences. From here, it’s just 15 minutes to the waterfront and city centre. But with more than 1.5 hectares to call your own, you also feel a world away. This house makes an imposing first impression, with a stately facade and a manicured garden either side of the driveway. From the front porch, there’s an uninterrupted water outlook to take in. The two-storey house has been designed for family living and offers spacious living areas and a practical floor plan. The heart of the house is at the back of the ground floor, where a large openplan zone has walls of windows showcasing the lush lawn and established trees in the backyard. To one side is a stylish kitchen, with heritage-style cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances and abundant bench space. It overlooks a meals area, which sits in a bay window, while the adjacent living area opens to a large covered outdoor area. Surrounded by a rose garden, this is an engaging space all-yearround and, at the same time, quite intimate. A formal lounge behind french doors at the front of the house provides a more sophisticated space for entertaining indoors. It’s also a room where parents can hide away for some peace and quiet. The kids, on the other hand, can take over a spacious rumpus upstairs, which opens to a balcony with bay views. It’s stunning in daylight, but even more so by night. The four bedrooms are also upstairs. The main, at the back, has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite in classic black and white. It overlooks the land at the back of the property, providing a real sense of escape. Bedrooms two, three and four are all generously sized and have built-in wardrobes. The main bathroom has a separate shower and spa bath; a picture window offers bay views from the bath. There’s also a powder room on the ground floor. A double garage has access to the covered outdoor area, but it’s the second shed that steals the spotlight. It could easily fit eight cars and has an office, as well as a mezzanine level for storage. Kids will love to play in the spacious yard, where there’s plenty of room for a pool or tennis court if the new owners want to add them. Behind the house block is a paddock set up for horses, with stables and solar-electrified fencing. The CBD is close by and the ring road is easily accessed from here, meaning you can be in Melbourne within 50 minutes. This is an opportunity to enjoy a rural lifestyle without missing out on all the things you love. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au
