Our sweet dreams have well and truly come true thanks to Geelong’s newest gelato spot, Miss Gina Gelato. Delectable concoctions come in dairy and sorbet options, and include classic flavours with delicious new twists – think Snickers, Cherry Ripe, Toblerone and, the extremely popular, Raffaello. All made fresh daily. #win. ● » Miss Gina Gelato / 58 Moorabool Street, Geelong. » Instagram: @missginagelato

It might be the age of the almond milk latte, but coffee veteran Mark Stawicki, from Box Office Cafe favours cashew milk as a creamy, less overpowering option for coffee lovers. His cashew milk lattes sit along other options such as almond and soy and, for the more adventurous, cashew turmeric milk. ● » Box Office Cafe 77 Preston Street, Geelong West. Phone 0417 603 323

NICK DE STEFANO \ Harcourts North Geelong Started out \ In 2009. I had always worked in sales and ran my own business in homewares, but property was always a passion so I decided to make the change. Best part of the job \ It’s always gratifying to get good feedback from clients. I recently received a card from a client who has a son with a disability and she said her house sale, and the price we negotiated, had assisted her in getting all the special care he needs. It’s nice to know you’ve made a difference to someone’s life. Geelong’s property hot spot \ Geelong West has gone out of control, so have all of the suburbs closest to it. The 3215 suburbs are very popular right now. My favourite place? La Vista on Eastern Beach is great. It has really good authentic Italian food and beautiful views of the bay. On days off I like to … relax and spend time with family, especially my grandkids. ●

Speculative growth excites Barry Plant Geelong senior sales consultant DION PLUMB. Pointing to Herne Hill, where the average house price has grown from $250,000 to $333,000 over five years, Dion now has his eye on Bell Post Hill and Bell Park by extension. “The average price has been a consistent mover, but still very affordable, considering allotments are large and generally have potential for views,” he says. “It’s 25 minutes to the beach, less than an hour to Melbourne and less than 10 minutes to the CBD. It won’t be long until the affordability is recognised by the market and the growth will follow with increased demand.” He’s also excited by South Geelong. “If you told a Melbourne buyer that you could buy a character home in walking distance to the CBD, train station, river and waterfront for less than $400,000, they would think we were in 1995,” Dion says. “But South Geelong offers all of this now.” ●

GEELONG MAUSOLEUM: STAGE 3 Pre-purchase off the plan

The tradition of above-ground entombment in a mausoleum, has existed for thousands of years. In many countries around the world, mausoleums are popular for their ability to commemorate and honour our loved ones in a place specifically designed for dignified repose. The Geelong Cemeteries Trust has built two beautiful public mausolea, each being architecturally designed with its own unique style and character, which allows the Barwon Region Community access to this distinguished form of final rest. Crypts in these two mausolea are nearly sold out, and a third and final mausoleum is planned to complete this project at the Geelong Eastern Cemetery. The new Mausoleum design will continue with the theme of high quality Italian granite, copper roof and coloured feature glass, and pre-purchasing the 105 crypts off the plan will now be offered to our community prior to 8 DOMAIN GEELONG \ DECEMBER 15, 2016

construction commencing mid-2017. By pre-purchasing off the plan, you will ensure your reservation in a preferred location in this third and final stage is secured at today’s price. JASON BARNETT, director of Newtown’s Barnett Real Estate, says Grovedale, with many 1960s and ’70s houses, is a diamond in the rough waiting to shine. “As you head out of Geelong to Torquay, it sits between Belmont and Armstrong Creek, which is a new estate out a little bit further. Belmont’s already quite sought after and a bit expensive, and Armstrong Creek is brand new and growing. Then you have this suburb sitting between them, where the houses are quite affordable, roughly about $350,000- $370,000,” he says. “I’m also looking at Bell Park on the north side, a 1960s cream brick area that’s very close to the centre of Geelong. It has good 600-squaremetre-plus blocks of land.” ●

RYRIE STREET

With an average median house price of $400,000, Hamlyn Heights is the suburb to watch, according to TONY SLACK LACK of Geelong Real Estate Advocates. “Hamlyn Heights offers extremely good value for money compared with its direct neighbouring suburbs in Geelong West and Manifold Heights,” he says. “Wide, leafy streets are a major attraction, together with larger-thanaverage-sized allotments, many providing views of the bay. “It’s a highly regarded suburb with just the same benefits as its more expensive neighbours and it’s well-serviced by public transport, primary and secondary schools, with Vines Road and Minerva Road shopping strips nearby.” ●

GINA POPOWICZ, director at Prime Real Estate says low interest rates and soaring demand across Geelong mean investing anywhere in the city makes sense. “Hamlyn Heights and Herne Hill are located less than 10 kilometres from the CBD and have easy access to the ring road for commuters, with good private and public schools close by, public transport and local shopping strips conveniently placed,” she says. “On the east side, you have areas like Newcomb, which is quite affordable.” ●

PAKINGTON STREET

JOE GRGIC, director at Harcourts North Geelong, says investing anywhere in Geelong makes sense, because it has one of the Western world’s fastest-growing populations. “My picks at the moment are Bell Park, Bell Post Hill and Hamlyn Heights,” he says. “They have excellent infrastructure, a quick turn to the ring road and in five minutes you’re in Pakington Street’s cosmopolitan hub or Geelong’s highly prized waterfront. “With good-sized allotments and relatively affordable to higher-end quality homes, they also have excellent amenities, from top schools to shopping and easy-to-navigate streets. Everything is within 20 minutes.” ●

BEN RIDDLE, director at Buxton Real Estate’s Newtown branch, names Manifold Heights as his suburb to watch in 2017. “While it was always seen as leafy and prestigious, Manifold Heights’ prices compared to Newtown have always been a slower burn,” he says. “However, there’s a shift towards this suburb, with buyers looking for its big blocks, paving the way for younger families to enter and establish better buying power. “Pakington Street might have the hype but Shannon Avenue is now becoming a hive of activity with restaurants, local shopping haunts and excellent cafe scene.” ●

So, o, you like a quote from Mark Twain, T or Coco Chanel hanel or Deepak Chopra? By all means, write it down but please refrain from framing it. Worse is when you only want “good vibes” or your children to “feel good”, so much so that you had it printed on a cushion. Here’s ere’s the thing: we all want happiness. We all love our kids to the moon and back and we all wish each other namaste (in my day we called it shalom, but that’s by the by). But staring at those same words every single day? Not inspirational. ●

(THESE WALLS)

DON’T

I

t’s hard to believe it’s December. We’ve survived almost the entire year. As we look back over 2016 there are undoubtedly things we can all find to be thankful for. But it would be remiss of us to deny or forget that this year carried with it many heinous burdens that we’d all be glad to never lay eyes on again. I’m speaking, not just of politics and crushing world events, but things closer to home – like, literally in our homes. If we don’t at least reflect on some of the worst interior trends of the past 12 months, we might find ourselves repeating them. ●

Wallpaper Every year interior designers and home stylists tell us: wallpaper is making a comeback. This proclamation is usually accompanied by “a peek” inside some fabulous creative type’s abode and there, serving as the ultimate backdrop to the “eclectic pieces” from Marrakesh and Freedom Furniture, is a beautiful wall of flowers. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this – it almost always looks striking and beautiful. The problem is the conceit, like a model advertising a transparent mini dress, this is a very specific look. Hey, I wish we could all cover our kitchen walls in golden filigree, but just like those mini dresses, it’s just not going to look the same for the average person. ●

Going too Retro The problem is the conceit, like a model advertising a transparent mini dress, this is a very specific look.

(SUPPLIED)

2016 was the year of metallic accents, such as low-hanging silver lamps, copper pots and rose gold mirror frames. It was also the year of indoor plants. It was also the year of statement velvet couches. And inflatable pink flamingos. All of these are absolutely fine in moderation but for those who combined them, please take a moment to check if your house has turned into a scene from Boogie Nights Nights and adjust accordingly. ●

Fabric wall art

Blame the growing craft movements and the recent fetishisation of the alleged exotic. Hell, blame crappy paint jobs that need cover-ups. The fact is fabric wall art exploded in 2016 and not all of it was pretty. Where once people were content to hang up a twee tapestry of their dog’s face, or mount that vibrant mandala print on their flatmate’s adjoining wall, the two trends converged this year and we saw DIY weaves (also known as wall hangings) flood every design blog, Pinterest and Instagram account. Some of them look good. Some of them look like a dog had a fight with a half-knitted jumper and to prevent further altercations, it’s been hung on a wall so Fido can’t reach it. ●

Minimalist bedrooms

(BONNIN STUDIO)

(STOCKSY)

There’s really nothing like coming home to an all-white bedroom, consisting of just your oversized, low-lying bed and soft-as-T-shirt sheets, rice-coloured side table with a lamp the colour and texture of paper – and absolutely nothing else. There’s nothing like it because it cannot exist in the real world. What about your clothes? Your Y non-matching blanket for when it is cold? Y Your iPad or laptop? Oh, you just grab a pale basket and pile it all in. But, then one basket quickly becomes two and, before you know it, you’ve added those ridiculous paper bag storage things and, what do you know? It’s no longer minimalist. ●

Owner Kate McLaren believes in supporting diversity in a world of mass-production. A maker of handbags, clutches, purses and accessories herself, Kate opened quirk collective in 2012 to showcase other indie artists and designers. Between teaching VCE English at St Joseph’s College, running the shop and having a baby, Kate has put her own label, iz & lotte, into mothballs for the moment. on’t count the bids, make the bids count,” Andy Ingham (Buxton Newtown) told the crowd of 60 outside 109 Maud Street, Geelong, on Saturday, as the mark pushed beyond $500,000. Three parties had put a toe in the water for the house, a three-bedroom weatherboard ripe for a makeover, after Andy’s opening vendor bid of $450,000. One bidder was conservative, upping the ante in $1000 increments. His main rival was sticking with bids of $5000 and looking strong. Then a fourth party entered the fray at $530,000. He bid strongly in $5000 increments to the finish before Andy brought down the hammer in his favour at $570,000. The winner, from Melbourne, is unsure about his plans for the property, which was on the market for the first time in more than 60 years. Just a block away, at 44 Mundy Street, Geelong, Andy’s colleague Tom Butters (also Buxton Newtown) held court in front of 55 onlookers. He also opened with a vendor bid – $360,000 – for the two-bedroom weatherboard cottage on just under 290 square metres. Three parties fought it out, but in the end it was down to two, both upping the ante

AUCTION December 17 at 10am OFI By appointment

OFI By appointment This unique offering, on an 840-square-metre allotment, has space, potential and location and will appeal to a range of buyers. The bones are strong, but there is scope to modernise. New residents can move straight in and enjoy the room, renovate the house or subdivide the block. Inside, there’s a flexible floor plan, light and bright rooms and polished floorboards. The stylishly renovated kitchen, with ample cabinetry and workspace, is a highlight. All bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and ceiling fans. Outside, there’s a large double garage and workshop with mechanic’s pit, and there’s space for two other cars. The big backyard means there’s lots of room for the kids and pets and scope to create a dream garden. The property is close to the ring road, city centre, schools, shops and the Barwon River. ● REBECCA THOMPSON

with bids of $1000. When the mark passed $390,000, Tom urged some decisive action. “You can be the sheep or you can be the wolf,” he suggested to the underbidder. “What’s it to be?” Despite his urgings, the bids kept coming in rises of $1000, and when they hit $398,000 the property was passed in. It sold soon after for a higher, undisclosed price, to a Geelong man who plans to

renovate the property and live there. At 22 Bayview Avenue, Hamlyn Heights, Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) faced a crowd of 60 outside the three-bedroom weatherboard on 674 square metres. “We all know it needs a bit of elbow grease,” Joe said before an opening bid of $350,000 rang out. The offers then flowed thick and fast, five other parties getting involved before the hammer finally fell at $430,000. The winner was a local developer. Earlier, Joe sold 97 Princes Highway, Norlane, post-auction. He passed in the two-bedroom house on just under 560 square metres at $153,000. A local woman, who plans to fix up the house and live there, soon bought the property for a higher, undisclosed price. Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant South Barwon) wasn’t about to undersell the four-bedroom brick house and pool on about 1000 square metres at 4 Bent Road, Wandana Heights. “We are in the most desirable residential precinct this side of the Barwon (river),” he told the crowd of 35. T Two parties showed interest before Kieron passed the property in on a vendor bid of $800,000. There will be no rest for agents in the leadup to Christmas, with a host of properties scheduled to go under the hammer. ●

One of the key characteristics of 1960s architecture is an emphasis on the outdoors. More than that, it has an intense focus on bringing the outside in. This elevated brick house in Highton’s hills is the perfect example. Walls of windows at the front capture brilliant views that span from the Barwon River and its bush surrounds to Simonds Stadium. A balcony ensures you can enjoy the outlook from inside or out. On an 829-square-metre block, this three-bedroom brick house would suit someone looking for a project. As it stands, it has three bedrooms, each with a built-in wardrobe and the main with an en suite. There’s a formal lounge at the front of the house, along with a living area in an open-plan zone with the kitchen. There’s a huge backyard, and a double garage with underhouse storage. ● SARAH BIESKE

Once the worst house on the street, this renovated weatherboard now stands among the best. The vendor doesn’t hold back when talking about the state of the character house when he purchased it, describing it as “plain ugly”. However, after a major overhaul and extension at the rear, it’s been transformed into a showcase of contemporary living. It also happens to be in one of Geelong’s most exclusive

pockets, with the leafy surrounds home to some of the city’s finest period houses. The three-bedroom residence has huge street appeal, with landscaped gardens preceding a decked front porch. Inside, there are polished timber floors from front to back that create an effortless transition from zone to zone. The heart of the house is an expansive open-plan zone at the rear, with a designer kitchen, meals area and living area. The kitchen has

stone benchtops, gloss cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances, as well as a large island bench. Sliding doors open the living area to a deck at the back, complete with a pizza oven. The three bedrooms are carpeted. The main, at the front, has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with double vanity. A long driveway leads to the single garage with workshop, while lawn back and front adds to the feeling of space. ● SARAH BIESKE

The backyard of this brick family house is an example of one of the reasons this part of Geelong is becoming so popular with buyers. The 679-squaremetre block has rows of mature fruit trees and a huge shed and there is still plenty of room for kids to run. The house has been much-loved and offers three bedrooms, each with a built-in wardrobe. There’s a lounge and a meals area either side of the kitchen, while a sunroom at the front of the house is a likely spot to sit and read a book in the afternoon. The double garage has internal access. The shed in the backyard has been converted into a bungalow, complete with kitchenette and bathroom. Schools, shops and the ring road are close by. This property offers an idyllic lifestyle and is just 10 minutes from the CBD. ● SARAH BIESKE
