AGENT’S VIEW

Best part of the job \ Working with some really talented and great people and getting to see them grow and perform. Also the number of people you meet doing this job; some of my clients have become lifelong friends. Geelong’s property hot spot \ Belmont, Hamlyn Heights and Herne Hill have now emerged and continue to sell really well. There’s a lot of growth in the northern suburbs. There’s so much interest in Geelong at the moment from Melbourne buyers, so there’s something in it for everybody and it will ensure our market here stays buoyant. My favourite place? To be honest, I’m either at work or at home. On days off I like to … spend time with the family. Sometimes I’ll go for a hit of golf or a trip to the races. But I enjoy just being a homebody when I can. ●

BYRON BAY

(NICK WILSON)

A 20-year love affair with Byron Bay led Sydney couple Max and Mariella Iacopetta and their daughter Ruby to trade in their Sydney lifestyle for a sea change, albeit on one of the country’s most prestigious strips of real estate: Wategos Beach. Attracted by the area’s laid-back culture, the couple envisioned a modern beach home, using locally sourced stone and timber; however, there was nothing laid-back about the project. They had an initial budget of about $2.5 million and a time frame of 12 months, but completing the three-bedroom, three-level home took the budget to $4 million and a two-year build time. “We knew we wanted to build an outstanding place and leave a mark pretty much on the Australian landscape,” says Max, a property developer from a young age, who runs his own building company. Built into a steep block, the house takes advantage of the commanding views, including Byron’s famous lighthouse, and Julian Rocks, with massive windows made from kwila timber to highlight the panorama and help lighten the building’s appearance. Designed by architect Tony Freeman, the house is set across three storeys, with a garage on the bottom floor. The middle level has the sleeping quarters, including a lavish main bathroom with outdoor Balinese-style bath and shower. On the top floor, spacious living areas, culminating in an open-plan kitchen and living room, accessed by a lift, showcase the stunning outlook. Bathrooms effortlessly merge into outdoor spaces, vertical landscaped gardens hang off the hillside, while the custom-made Italian joinery indoors adds a touch of luxury with its handcrafted finishes. The result: a cleverly tiered, light timber structure that has an air of being on an exclusive holiday. “We wanted a beautiful resort feel,” Mariella says. “You can definitely breathe up here.” ●

Byron Bay \ New South Wales

With their four-hectare block surrounded by rolling paddocks and vineyards, Claire Jackson and Lisa Daniel let the view dictate where they built their Mornington Peninsula home. Deciding to take advantage of the picturesque outlook, the couple chose to face their house west, rather than taking in the north sun. It was an interesting approach, particularly as they wanted to incorporate sustainability into the design. “Facing north would have been the obvious place to put it, but that’s not taking in the view at all,” Lisa says. As a result, overhanging eaves fend off the summer sun. With a long pavilion as the base of their design, and an upstairs bedroom and office space jutting out from the top, the couple used recycled materials, rammed earth and polished concrete. Timber cladding blends with rammed earth, while the white-box bedroom and office seem to float into the landscape. “The white box isn’t as imposing as you would imagine,” Claire says. “Particularly on a cloudy day, it just seems to disappear into the clouds.” There are three more bedrooms with en suites at one end of the house, with the living, kitchen and dining area at the other. Sliding panels separate the living area into two smaller zones for more intimate numbers. In the main living room, an inset timber daybed has been made from the floorboards of Lisa and Claire’s former home, while in the kitchen the couple have left their mark by imprinting the old house’s key into the concrete workbench. Rammed earth feature walls in the living areas offset the polished concrete floors. A window in the wine cellar provides a view into the swimming pool. “I feel like we are leaving an incredible legacy, and I’m quite proud of the fact there is so much of us in here,” Lisa says. “We’ve really put our heart and soul into it, and I feel it’s a great reflection of us.” ●

« Inverloch \ Victoria Architect \ James Stockwell ● Client \ Glenn & Kate Morris When architect James Stockwell first showed Kate and Glenn Morris the model for their Inverloch home, Kate admits she balked at the idea. “When [James] pulled out the model, my eyes did pop out because I did think it looked rather like a spaceship, and I thought ‘Oh my god’,” says Kate, who has since warmed to the idea of living in such a futuristic home. While UFO-like in its look, the house is actually modelled on a Barchan sand dune in response to its windswept location. As a result, the floor plan has a crescent-like shape to withstand the elements. Inside, the interiors are minimalist, with panoramic views taking centre stage. Nooks have been built into the structure to create a seamless blend between the building and furniture. The 22-square-metre floor plan is relatively small, with just two bedrooms, but more than $1.3 million was spent to make the house as sustainable as possible. The rust-resistant lime zinc roof was imported from Europe, while the ceilings are clad in Victorian ash timber. Rammed earth walls feature throughout the interior, while double-glazed windows, a ground-source heat pump and solar farm are other nods to sustainability. Wanting to live a self-sufficient lifestyle, Glenn and Kate also installed their own waste and water management system. The concrete pad the house sits on is larger than the building, allowing for patio space to absorb sun and warm the house throughout the winter. Everything about this house has been done with a low-carbon footprint in mind. “I want it to be a house that’s seen as a landmark in every sense of the word,” Glenn says. “I want it to be a sustainable house landmark. I want it to be a design landmark and I want it to be a house that people say ‘Yeah that works, it makes sense’.” ●

JANE ROCCA catches up with Miranda Kerr

“I ended up studying nutrition in Australia and in America, and I really do feel that when I am eating something I think of the impact it has on my energy levels,” she says. “I don’t understand why people count calories – it’s more important that you’re healthy and exercising.” Miranda’s interest in health and wellbeing also spurred her to create her own organic skincare range. Today her KORA Organics products, which are manufactured in Melbourne, are highly lucrative and sold around the world. Recent reports speculated Miranda might be planning to move back to Australia, following a nasty incident at her Malibu home during which an intruder was shot. But for now she remains in LA, where she can co-parent her six-year-old son Flynn with his father, actor Orlando Bloom (the couple divorced in 2013 after three years of marriage).

(RUSSELL JAMES)

S

he has one of the world’s most recognisable faces, gracing campaigns for brands from Chanel and Miu Miu to Victoria’s Secret via the famous Pirelli calendar – and a personal fortune estimated at $6 million by Forbes magazine. She’s engaged to a billionaire – Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel – and owns her own successful skincare brand. But 12 years after her burgeoning modelling career swept her to the US to live, Miranda Kerr remains a down-to-earth Aussie girl at heart. “Los Angeles is home but I love coming back when I can to Australia,” she says. “I still feel very connected to it. It’s where my family is, it’ll always be my spiritual home.” Her latest venture is very much a return to her roots. This season, almost 15 years after she first appeared in a Bonds campaign at age 18, Miranda is donning one-pieces and bikinis in Bonds’ new Swim collection. It’s a part of her past she’s cheerfully nostalgic about. “I grew up wearing Bonds from as long as I can remember,” she says. “I wore Chesty Bonds T-shirts, tank tops and underwear as a kid. When they asked me to be part of the campaign I said ‘Of course’. The brand is relatable and I feel they capture the Australian spirit.” These days the 33-year-old former face of David Jones admits her sartorial preferences run to a girly style. “I used to be a jeans and T-shirt girl but I lean more towards feminine these days,” she says. “I am a very tactile and aesthetically driven dresser. I like different fabrics and the way they fit on my body and I hate clothes that creep as you stand or walk. They have to hang a certain way. I love a high-waist jean but I lean towards dresses and skirts.” Born in Sydney, Miranda grew up in Gunnedah, NSW. She describes herself as being a bit of a tomboy as a kid, riding horses and playing outdoors with her younger brother Matthew. She also developed an early interest in healthy living and nutrition. “My grandparents had a vegetable patch and my grandpa used to explain the importance of good soil and growing your own food.” That interest stayed with her, even after she was discovered at 13 in a Dolly magazine contest. She juggled modelling for local surf labels such as Billabong, Tigerlily and Roxy with studying nutrition and health psychology at the Academy of Natural Living near Cairns, before moving to the US to pursue her career in 2004.

Her Los Angeles address also means Miranda can be close to her husband-to-be. She won’t name the date, but Miranda will marry Evan Spiegel this year. She met the Snapchat billionaire at a Louis Vuitton dinner in Los Angeles, and a friendship soon blossomed into something more. “I adore him because he’s old-fashioned,” she says, smiling. “He’s passionate about what he does and I can relate to that. We have a mutual respect for one another.” If it seems that Miranda has a lot going on in her life, she attributes her industrious personality to her upbringing. “My parents taught me from a young age that it’s important to have a good work ethic,” she says. “Things don’t come for free. You have to make your wealth by working hard. I also like to have lots of things on the go – from modelling to my skincare line. I need variety. “I’ve been blessed to get some great work … I don’t take any of these opportunities for granted. They’ve all helped pave the way for me to get to the next exciting thing.” But when it comes to raising Flynn, Miranda says she makes sure she puts away the phone to focus on one-to-one time. “Flynn knows when I am home we spend quality time together,” she says. “We play hide and seek or jump on the trampoline. I ask him what he wants to do and let him lead. I also don’t let work get in the way of our time together. When I am home, it’s all about him.” Her work ethic also helps when it comes to looking after herself. She sets her alarm an hour before Flynn wakes so she can do yoga or meditation. She’s not cardio-obsessed and says she gets dizzy from spin classes – preferring a more chilled approached to getting her body and mind in balance. “I really try to look after myself on a daily basis,” Miranda says. “Consistency is important and I will try to work my routine for fitness around my schedule. When Flynn’s at school, I do a workout, I also take the stairs over lifts, if I can. I also like to eat healthy food – I have never been a calorie-counter.” ● jrocca@theweeklyreview.com.au » bonds.com.au

The most recent venture from the team behind Stillwater at Crittenden is Greek restaurant Alatonero – or “saltwater” in English. “I lived in Greece in my 20s, and I saw a huge gap in the market on the peninsula,” says Jacqui Poulier, who owns the restaurant with husband Zac. Food is prepared using locally-sourced ingredients, such as lamb from Gippsland, seafood from the peninsula and fruit and vegetables from local growers. Throughout summer there will be a spitroast and Sunday sessions with DJs, where guests can relax in the garden with a Santorini Donkey (aka Moscow Mule) in hand. ●

Coastal dweller Chris Wilson has finally opened a seaside iteration of his much-loved South Melbourne studio. The former warehouse space was designed by Folk Architects. “We wanted to keep the materials natural but keep the warehouse look and feel,” co-owner Patch Thompson says. The place has been transformed into an open, light-filled studio, complete with skylights and a fireplace. Two yoga rooms are separated by bifold doors, plus there are osteo, massage and acupuncture consultation rooms. Yoke offers at least four classes of Vinyasa-based practice a day. ●

IGNI RESTAURANT \ GEELONG

Named after one of the original Sorrento locals, a stonemason known for his lively nature, this bright and breezy cafe features a sandstone fireplace, crockery in oceanic hues, a bar where one can sit and enjoy freshly shucked oysters and champagne, a sunny courtyard out the back and front windows that open out onto the street. Mr Morce is the creation of two local families, who were “looking for places they could drop into and unwind”. Meanwhile, head chef Tom Anderson (ex-Montalto) will be bringing innovation to the mix by experimenting with local produce. ● ● 182 Ocean Beach Road, Sorrento ● 5984 1838 ● Open 9am til late ● mrmorce.com.au

Igni is the brainchild of Jo Smith, Drew Hamilton and Aaron Turner (who was voted chef of the year at the The Age Good Food Guide 2017 awards). The restaurant name is a nod to Aaron’s cooking style, which is over an open flame – though Drew is quick to point out that this does not mean Igni is a meat or grill restaurant. Rather, it’s modern Australian with a strong focus on vegies and keeping patrons on their toes. “There’s no menu,” Drew says. “We do a five or eight-course degustation, with or without pairing. The food is always changing. Despite the fact that Aaron’s cooking on fire, the flavours are very subtle.” ●

So-called because of its proximity to world-class surf breaks, this little brewpub is the creation of Simon Bismire. “Travelling through Tasmania visiting other small bars and breweries is what really inspired the idea of running our own brewpub,” says Simon, who has been in the brewing game for years and has a passion for fresh, quality craft beer. Beer is handcrafted on site using traditional brewing methods. Also available are locally sourced wine and cheese platters. Gourmet burgers and barbecue will be served during summer months. ●

one good habit

(ISTOCK)

O

K, January is well and truly under way. How are you going with that plan to get up earlier, do 10,000 steps a day and cut out alcohol? It’s at this time of year that many of us realise that we’ve tried to take on too much with our new year’s resolutions. Perhaps the secret to success is to pick up one good habit. Leo Babauta, author of the hugely influential American blog Zen Habits, writes that “taking on even just two habits at once is setting ourselves up for failure … I would estimate that you triple or even quadruple your chances of success if you focus on one habit at a time, one month at a time”. With that in mind, take your pick of one of these simple, practical health tips from some of our leading wellness experts. ● jhone@hotmail.com

“Eat vegetables for breakfast so that you can reach a good six to eight serves of vegies a day. Vegies should ideally make up the base of every meal. I’ll often just have leftover vegies with an egg on top for breakfast, or a vegie-based smoothie that I tote to work in a jar. I’ve also been known to eat soup and leftover stew for breakfast. Who said we have to eat toasted flakes every morning?” ●

“Remove technology from the bedroom. We all want more space, and what we’re doing is cramming every moment of the day with stuff and cluttering up our lives. Evidence is showing that we need a minimum of one hour of no-screen time in order to give ourselves the best chance of a good night’s sleep. It is an addiction, checking emails, Instagram, breaking news … If your phone is your alarm clock, go to the $2 shop and buy an alarm clock there.” ●

“Eat two squares of dark chocolate – at least 80 per cent cocoa – per day. Based on the best evidence, it would be close to the No. 1 food you can eat. It has powerful anti-ageing capabilities. In laboratory studies it has been shown to reduce ageing by up to 80 per cent. The four people who lived the longest on earth have all eaten dark chocolate” ●

Aim for seven to nine hours every night – it’s an easy and effective way to keep your weight loss goals on the right track. And making up for lack of sleep on the weekends doesn’t count.” ●

“Move every day. Variety is important, consistency is important, sometimes intensity is important. But when people start to move every day, they end up generating a fair bit of momentum, which then leads to all of those things happening anyway. To be sedentary for continuous days in a row, we sneak into bad habits. If you can get to at least half an hour every day, that’s a really good goal. Even if you start at 10 minutes and slowly build it up.” ●

“Eat at a whole-food diet, as close to nature as you possibly can. Whole foods don’t come with a set of numbers on the back that we don’t understand; they are full of properties designed to heal your body. Disease isease goes away as a byproduct of getting healthy, and by supporting this process with an unprocessed whole-food diet we are giving our bodies the very best possible chance to heal. My personal rule is to ask myself whether I could grow the food I’m about to eat in my backyard. If I could, then it’s likely on the menu.” ●

Daria Gavrilova is ready to take on the world’s best, writes Sarah Marinos

(MICHAEL RAYNER)

M

14 DOMAIN GEELONG \ JANUARY 19, 2017

elbourne Park is a vast construction site when I catch up with Daria Gavrilova, as final preparations are made for one of Australia’s biggest sporting events. Tennis hopefuls have arrived from across the world to do battle in the Australian Open, but Australia’s No.2 ranked woman hasn’t had to travel far. Born in Moscow, 22-year-old Daria has lived in Melbourne since 2012. In 2015, she and her parents, Alexey and Natalia, and younger brother, Stepan, became citizens in a low-key ceremony at the Australian embassy. “I was super nervous when I sat the citizenship test,” she says. “I prepared hard and even learnt the national anthem.” Tennis first brought her to Australia at 15 and by 18 she was fixed on making Melbourne home. “The lifestyle suited me here – the weather, Australia is a sporty country and it’s chilled. That’s very different to life in Russia,” she says. Daria has also adopted some true blue Aussie tastes. Vegemite and avocado on toast are favourites. “I travel with a tube of Vegemite. A few tennis players joked that I must be eating Vegemite to get Australian citizenship but I like it, although I don’t go too thick,” she says. “I have found it very easy to settle in Australia although I’m not sure about the culture where people

say, ‘How ya going?’ but they don’t really care. You’re not expected to actually answer the question. In Russia, if you ask someone how they are going you will get a full-on answer. If you’re not going great, people will know.” Daria has spent the morning on court and is now in the Tennis Australia cafe overlooking Garden Square. She’s swapped shorts and a T-shirt for a burnt-orange silk dress, Ray-Bans and discreet diamond and sapphire stud earrings. Jewellery, she admits, is a passion. She began playing tennis at six, supported by her father, a mechanic, and her mother, an accountant. “But the lifestyle in Moscow was crazy – there’s too much traffic. If you have a practice session at 9am, you must leave home at 6am to be on time. I like to visit Moscow but I don’t get homesick,” she says. When she moved to Australia, Daria was already a rising star. She won the Youth Olympics in Singapore and the US Open juniors in 2010. She is now coached by Nicole Pratt and the partnership is paying dividends with Daria ranked 25 in the world, and nipping at the heels of Sam Stosur to become Australia’s No.1. “I think people expected me to break into the top 100 earlier because a lot of girls I played juniors with were winning matches and WTA tournaments,” she says. “It was a little harder mentally for me.” In 2012, Daria had a breakthrough year, qualifying for the Australian Open and facing a childhood idol at the Dubai Open. “I played my first round and all I could think was, ‘Oh my god, if I win I play against Serena Williams next’. I won the first set and then my concentration went because I was thinking of Serena. My dad then said, ‘I know what you’re thinking but concentrate on this match and what you need to do now’,” she says. “The night I played Serena, I arrived early to get a feel of the court. The girls in the locker room were joking – ‘You’re playing Serena? You have no chance’. Since then, whenever I play someone big, I never arrive at court too

early and talk to too many people. When Serena came on court, the crowd went crazy and I got butterflies. It was one of those unreal moments.” Last year, Daria reached round four of the Australian Open and the finals of the Kremlin Cup. She caused an upset at the Hong Kong Open a few months ago when she beat world No.1 No. Angelique Kerber in straight sets. “But my dream is to beat Maria Sharapova at Rod Laver Arena. That would be pretty awesome,” she says. “Sharapova was a big deal in Russia when I was growing up. She won Wimbledon at 14 and when I was eight I thought, ‘I will beat that’. But then you realise how hard it is.” Daria has no pre-match rituals but she’s a detailed note-taker and is often seen revising her tactics on paper before a game. She has done the same at this week’s Australian Open. “The crowd makes the Australian Open special. I played as an Australian for the first time in 2015 and couldn’t believe how much support I got,” she says. That support in Australia also comes from her partner of six years, Luke Saville, another Melbourne tennis pro. Luke won the junior Wimbledon title in 2011 and is 157th in the world rankings. The couple met at a tournament in Mexico in 2010. “When we first met, we talked on Facebook like little kids. I was his first girlfriend and his first love and it was the same for me. It’s a cute story,” Daria says. “We play different tournaments so travel at different times. We don’t see each other every day so maybe that is why our relationship has worked.” With her world ranking at an all-time high, Daria is confident about 2017. “I always have goals – the ultimate is to win a grand slam,” she says. “The Australian Open would be nice, but I’ll take any.” ● smarinos@theweeklyreview.com.au » The Australian Open is on at Melbourne Park until January 29

T

he Great Ocean Road is a scenic and engineering marvel. With new panoramas, each seemingly more glorious than the last, around every twist and turn, it has a justifiable place among Victoria’s must-see tourist attractions. The road was built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932 and runs 240 kilometres from Torquay to Allansford, near Warrnambool. It’s notoriously difficult terrain, and the soldiers averaged only three kilometres of new road a day. Present-day holidaymakers benefit from their hard yards,

Owned by the restaurant royalty in the Talimandis family, it delivers fresh, seasonal food in Greek (and great) style. Seafood, often local, is a menu star (if they’re serving local scallops ceviche, snap them up). The restaurant is a breezy space decorated in blue and white, and there are also tables lined up on the long, street-facing verandah. You’ll need to book because A La Grecque is always busy. ●

A stone’s throw from Anglesea town (provided you have a good arm), this place has accommodation covered. There are stylishly decorated and well-equipped one and two-bedroom apartments (some with water views) and group accommodation. The list of on-site facilities is extensive, from a day spa and steam room to a tennis court, playground and restaurant. Jumpz Anglesea, an outdoor trampoline park within the resort, is likely to be a big hit with the kids. ●

enjoying easy access to beaches and bush. The annual Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race also sweeps through here, showcasing the jaw-dropping scenery that formed the backdrop to the childhood of Australia’s only Tour de France winner. He says the setting is as good as any race on the planet. Now in its third year, the 2017 event will be held on the last weekend in January. It offers the opportunity to ride alongside Cadel himself in the people’s ride, and there’s also a family ride and elite men’s and women’s races. Routes vary, but all start in Geelong and head south through Barwon Heads and Torquay to Point Addis, then inland through Modewarre and Moriac before returning to Geelong. Non-riders shouldn’t be deterred – the event is a compelling sporting spectacle, attracting an estimated 100,000 spectators (not to mention a national TV audience of 1.3 million) and there’s plenty more to keep you occupied on Victoria’s most famous scenic drive. ● CARLEY OLLEY colley@theweeklyreview.com.au

THE HOT CHICKEN PROJECT

From a spot beside the bridge over the Anglesea River, Adrian and Barry hire out pedal boats, canoes and child-safe motorboats for jaunts on the river. Take a two-person canoe upriver on a one-hour loop that feels like you are kilometres from anywhere. The current is slow to non-existent and the bush comes right down to the water. It’s peaceful, calming and a little bit magical. A cluster of low bridges adds an element of excitement. Youngsters might prefer to potter between two buoys in a motorboat they can drive themselves. ●

Author of The Good People and the award-winning Burial Rites (both Picador Australia) READING NOW? I’m finally getting stuck into the tower of books on my bedside table. The pile has been growing steadily all year, waiting for me to finish my second novel – it’s dangerously high now. I’ve just devoured Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad, Tasmanian writer Heather Rose’s astonishing The Museum of Modern Love and I’m now reading Charles Dickens’ Bleak House for the first time, which is a treat.

I’ll be bumping Beauty is a Wound by Indonesian writer Eka Kurniawan to the top of the pile on the bedside table, along with Fight Like a Girl by Clementine Ford and Neil Gaiman’s The View from the Cheap Seats. ALL-TIME FAVOURITE AVOURITE SUMMER READ? A Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. Summer is the time when I read crime fiction: I scare easily, so I need to read it with an abundance of daylight. ●

Zoe Morrison (ZOE McMAHON)

Violinist, Rhodes scholar, research fellow, social justice advocate and academic; her debut novel Music and Freedom was published last year READING NOW? I’ve just started Fight Like A Girl by Clementine Ford. It has this conversational tone that carries you along, then suddenly lifts to pure manifesto. Sometimes she writes with such clarity and force it’s like a shot of triple espresso to your feminism: brilliant. MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? The Mothers by Brit Bennett, the debut novel getting rave reviews in the US this year. Bennett’s non-fiction on racial injustice was known already (and is also brilliant). And I can’t wait to crack open A Woman Looking at At Men Looking at Women: Essays on Art, Sex and the Mind, a new collection by Siri Hustvedt. I think Hustvedt’s fiction is extraordinary (her latest novel The Blazing World blew my mind) and her facility to translate several complex fields at once is quite amazing hers is a great mind.

Maria Lewis

READING NOW? I’m about halfway through Practical Homicide Investigation by Vernon Geberth, which makes me sound like a well-studied serial killer but it’s actually research for a crime book I’m in the process of writing. It’s a fiction story set in the US, so I’m trying to work my way through all the regulation textbooks for homicide detectives over there and Vernon Geberth’s is considered the bible. LOOKING FORWARD TO READING? And I Darken by Kiersten White, which I’ve heard extraordinary things about. I have a few weeks off so that’s what I’m keen to dive into: it’s a fictionalised retelling of the story of Vlad the Impaler but with bad-ass warrior women, so it’s right up my alley.

(NICOLAS PURCELL)

Author, journalist and pop culture commentator; her second book Who’s Afraid Too? is out this January 17.

ALL-TIMEE FA FAVOURITE SUMMER READING? Last summer I read all four novels in the Neapolitan series by Elena Ferrante very quickly in a row and I staggered around as if I’d been hit by several simultaneous family crises. A couple of summers before that I read Richard Flanagan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North while breast-feeding and getting very little sleep – the combination was full-on in all sorts of ways. Over summer I ingest books in a way that I have less opportunity to during the year, and their impact is heightened. On a completely different note, I like raiding my parents’ bookshelves on summer holidays for childhood favourites like Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta.

ALL-TIMEE FA FAVOURITE SUMMER READ? I like to go back to things I love and know (like a literary comfort blanket). This year I really adored Brian K. Vaughan’s graphic novel Paper Girls, about a group of young girls in the ’80s who are on their paper route when they discover a supernatural mystery. Think Stranger Things but with a neon colour palette. Vaughan is one of my favourite writers, period. From Y: The Last Man to Saga, he just does the most extraordinary work and manages to convey some really heavy ideas in an entertaining package.

HOT PROPERTY

T

he strong finish to last year looks set to roll over into 2017, with suburbs such as Grovedale, Bell Post Hill and Newcomb tipped to join Geelong’s growing list of hot property. The lack of supply in 2016, coupled with continued low interest rates, points to even higher prices in the boom suburbs. The market’s enduring love affair with Geelong West and Newtown has pushed many buyers into neighbouring suburbs such as Manifold Heights, Herne Hill and Hamlyn Heights; now it looks like Bell Post Hill’s turn, along with Bell Park. Across town, East Geelong’s solid performance appears likely to lift the profile of Newcomb, while the buzz around Belmont and Highton has buyers eyeing Grovedale. “All the infrastructure is sitting there in Grovedale,’’ says Jason Barnett of Barnett Real Estate. “They are solidly built homes on goodsized blocks, without paying those hefty Belmont and Highton prices.’’

STANDOUT SALES

WITH PAUL CH A PPLE

Tony Moorfoot (Buxton Highton) also predicts big things for the suburb. “Grovedale is taking off,’’ he says. “There are multiple buyers looking to get in there.’’ Tony also expects Belmont and Highton to keep performing strongly. “Plenty of buyers are ready to fight over properties,’’ he says. Kieron Hunter of Barry Plant South Barwon says that fight will come soon. It is the earliest start to the auction year that he can remember, coming off the back of a record-breaking 2016 for his office. Kieron says properties near shopping strips in Highton and Belmont are highly prized, with even unrenovated houses selling in the $500,000-$600,000 range. “The stock levels look like staying down and that will keep the prices up.’’ Kieron says one in three buyers in the $800,000-plus range are from out of Geelong. “It’s not just Melbourne. It’s regional Victorians, too.’’ Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) will conduct his first auction for the year

on February 11, but his office has already concluded several off-market sales to kick off 2017. “I expect that to continue throughout this year,’’ Joe says. “There’s a confidence in Geelong.’’ Buyers from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the local area have been knocking on the door since Christmas, and while Newtown, Geelong West, Hamlyn Heights and Herne Hill have been prominent on wish-lists, suburbs further out are gaining appeal. “The neighbouring suburbs are being pulled along,’’ Joe says. “Bell Post Hill and Bell Park will continue to grow in value.’’ Joe estimates stock levels were down 2025 per cent in 2016. Alycia Baines (Barry Plant Geelong) was kept busy during the break conducting inspections, many for out-of-town buyers. That strong interest follows a year in which Alycia sold properties to buyers from Sydney, Tasmania and rural Victoria. T “Geelong is always good value,’’ she says. “It will be a strong start to the year.’’

F O R T H E W EEK EN D I N G JA N UA R Y 2 1 , 2 017

She sees momentum building in Bell Post Hill, which “holds a lot of value’’ and tips Newcomb to be a rising star. So, too, does Dylan T Taggert (Buxton Newtown). “Newcomb will do well because of its proximity to the waterfront and CBD,’’ Dylan says. He says 2016 was notable for the number of bidders at auctions, due to the lack of supply and low interest rates. Several auctions were attended by crowds of more than 100. He says many Melbourne buyers consider Geelong the perfect place to get a foot in the market. Gina Popowicz (Prime) also cites tight stock levels as a key to how the market is likely to perform in 2017. “Vendors are in the driver’s seat,’’ Gina says. “Interest rates are so low that people are comfortable where they are.’’ Although prices are rising strongly and Geelong West is “still going crazy’’, Gina says Geelong is still affordable. “But the gap is closing,’’ she says. ●

HOUSE OF THE WEEK DRYSDALE \ 135 SETTLEMENT ROAD SOUTH

his incredible family house enjoys some of the best views this side of the peninsula. Nestled into the Bellarine hills, it has a backdrop that is truly something else – from the main living area and outdoor entertainment zone, the outlook across the waters of Corio Bay spans from the You Yangs to Geelong, Torquay, Ocean Grove and even the Otways. Covering more than four hectares of undulating land, this property would suit those in search of a tree change and sea change. There are established gardens, an orchard and a private swimming pool surrounded by cypress trees. The views are what initially attracted the vendors to make the move from Williamstown’s waterfront to the Bellarine Peninsula. More than a decade later, they’ve also fallen in love with the lifestyle Drysdale and its surrounds offer young families, as well as its proximity to the Bellarine’s beaches. There’s no better place to enjoy the location than this Duncan Pascoe-built four-bedroom house. Just six years old, it was designed to show off the vista to maximum effect, with walls of windows allowing the outside to become part of the interior. It doesn’t matter where you are in the house, there is a constant focus on the outdoors. Take the staircase to the bedrooms at the rear, for example; it faces east and the water views are behind you. But picture windows either side of the stairs capture views of the leafy garden, ensuring even this space has a sense of the rural surrounds. The house is split into two sections – one dedicated to living, the other to sleeping. The open-plan zone could easily be overwhelming given its vast dimensions, but the use of varying textures, a clever layout and the incredible backdrop ensure it is still welcoming. At either end of the zone are living areas – one with a stone feature wall and fireplace. The central designer kitchen offers high-end appliances and sophisticated finishes, as well as plenty of preparation and storage space. A dropped timber ceiling over the main bench adds warmth to the white benchtops and cabinetry, and also adds definition to the space. There’s more bench space in the butler’s pantry, as well as a second sink and room for a second fridge. A cathedral ceiling soars over the meals area next to the kitchen, filling it with natural light. Timber sliding doors open up the meals area to a large covered deck, and there’s a second deck off the main bedroom, giving parents a private space to enjoy the views. You can see the bay from the bedroom, which also has a large walk-in wardrobe and en suite with double shower. Bedrooms two, three and four each have walk-in wardrobes, with an en suite to the second bedroom. The third and fourth bedrooms have easy access to the main bathroom, as well as a rumpus room, which opens to a third deck. The original house remains on the property and has been converted for storage use. But it could also provide further accommodation for guests, if necessary. Just five minutes from Drysdale, the property is 10 minutes from the Portarlington ferry which runs to Melbourne three times a day. Geelong and Ocean Grove’s beaches are 20 minutes away. ● SARAH BIESKE

The courtyard is the perfect spot for a morning coffee and, given its size, ideal for entertaining. The open-plan zone takes in a large living area, dining space and kitchen with plenty of bench space and stainless-steel appliances. The three bedrooms are at the back of the house. The main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite, which opens to a private deck. The main bathroom, with a corner spa bath, also has access to the deck, which enjoys the afternoon sun. Two of the bedrooms have built-in wardrobes.

If you’re searching for an idyllic family location, it’s hard to look past this bayside pocket, which offers quiet streets, big blocks and affordability. But best of all, it’s just a stroll from Corio Bay and a short drive to central Geelong. This house has been designed to make the most of the generous 1014-square-metre allotment. The entrance opens to a large open-plan zone, with a sliding door to a courtyard that is bathed in sunlight given its north-easterly aspect.
