SUMMER SALUTI
International food stalls for grazing, drinks by Blackman’s Brewery or a cheeky sangria, music from the likes of Vanderlay and Vaudeville Smash. Throw in a huge range of market stalls and entertainment for all ages and the Nightjar Festival sounds like an appealing way to start a summer weekend. ●
Our favourite CBD gastropub, Centra, is known for its rustic Italian cuisine. But its newly renovated, sun-drenched courtyard makes a convincing space for wine tasting, too. Head along to the summer-themed rose tastings. There are also visits from winemakers and distributors. Saluti. ●

COASTAL STYLE GAIL THOMAS ASKS THREE ARCHITECTS WHAT MAKES THE IDEAL SURF COAST HOUSE
W
ith glorious views, pristine beaches, natural bush settings and a projected increase in development, the Surf Coast has plenty to entice potential new home builders. But what’s the ideal house design for the area? Is there a distinctive Surf Coast architectural style? Exposure to the Southern Ocean means prevailing winds are a crucial consideration when designing for the Surf Coast, along with sustainability, bushfire containment and environmental factors. Outdoor living is another key factor – often overlooked – as the outdoor lifestyle is often one of the big draws for living on the Surf Coast. Starting with a blank canvas, Kim Irons of Irons McDuff Architecture was able to create a design ideally suited to its Aireys Inlet setting with Ramp House. The home’s simple, partly elevated and partly grounded L-shaped plan is designed to wrap around a private landscape, shielding it from the cold and street. “The client’s love of timber led to this three-bedroom holiday house having stained sugar gum timber cladding and battens,” Kim says. “The battened and flyscreened recessed decks provide privacy and protection, relaxed qualities supported by internal materials of exposed block work and ply limed timber.” Kim says that the ever-present prevailing winds from the ocean, cold south-westerlies or south-eastern summer breezes mean there’s a tendency to build to shield on the

coast. But this must not come at the cost of compromising views or natural ventilation – Irons McDuff avoids using air-conditioners on its projects. The native bush setting of the Surf Coast also lends itself to houses that sit within the landscape and stay under the tree line, with north-easterly views embracing the bush. David Seeley of Seeley Architects at Torquay says his practice responds to the environment and to particular opportunities and constraints each property offers, and then marries that with the client’s brief in a way that transcends fashion and style. “Different architects have different
approaches and the results speak for themselves,” David says. A recent standout project involved renovating and adding a small extension to a 15-year-old house at Louttit Bay. “The suburban-style house was really inappropriate for its location and it didn’t capture the views,” David says. The renovation was, he says, transformative. It used materials and forms that resonate with and are appropriate to the location, and also consider the salt and corrosive effects of the ocean. Sometimes the thought process behind the design is an abstract representation of the
area, incorporating materials and colours that reflect the environment. “We are continually exploring techniques and materials, often utilising Australian timbers and stone that will deliver the most beautiful possible buildings,” David says. Michelle Findlay and Joel Farnan of Farnan Findlay Architects had lived and practised in Sydney for 18 years. Four years ago, they moved back to Torquay, where they both grew up. A classic circa-1950 fibro beach house on a big old Torquay block was the starting point for an unashamedly contemporary renovation project that included an addition of a linked pavilion. “The fibro shack had good bones and was a keeper so we modernised it with a new but related extension to the rear,” Michelle says. “We wanted the house to feel casual – more board shorts, less suit – a house with a sense of place that responds intuitively to the natural environment around it, not be in stark contrast to it.” With the block surrounded by the natural beauty of the coast, Michelle and Joel felt it was imperative to choose materials responsibly and sustainably. Their renovated shack uses timber that weathers and ages gracefully, stone and painted cement sheet to connect to the casual fibro “heritage”. A contemporary spotted gum-clad addition was separated by a bridging element, while the upper level addition has a stylistic connection with the original house. There is a new bedroom-hideaway that has expansive views of the ocean while the ground floor is wrapped around a wind-protected and sunny deck. The addition was constructed using “reverse brick veneer”, which Michelle says performs much better thermally than conventional brick veneer. “It also allows us to express the casual, natural aesthetic in the cladding materials.” ● » seeleyarchitects.com.au » ironsmcduff.com.au » farnanfindlay.com.au JANUARY 26, 2017 \ DOMAIN GEELONG 5

egend has it that in 1915, Hawaiian surfing pioneer Duke Kahanamoku picked a local teenager from a crowd at a Sydney beach to ride tandem on a wave with him. Her name was Isabel Letham. Though some of the finer details of the story have since been disputed, Isabel went down in history as the first Australian to ride a surfboard. Of course, where Duke came from, women and men had been riding alongside each other for centuries. In the decades that followed Isabel’s groundbreaking moment, surfing wasn’t an easy ride for women. They were all too often relegated to sit on the sand, Puberty Blues style, and watch while the guys showed them how it was done. Surfing legend Pam Burridge, who won her first

AFTER DECADES ON THE SIDELINES, WOMEN ARE CONQUERING THE SURF, WRITES JANE HONE competition in 1977 and became the first Australian woman to win a world title in 1990, calls her era “the dark ages of surfing”. “It was a pretty sexist time. You definitely got dropped in on. There was no surf clothing for girls. No wetsuits. Girls don’t surf – that was the mantra. There were only half a dozen surfers on the whole northern beaches of Sydney who were female,” she says, recalling her early surfing days in the 1970s. “We weren’t fighting for equality, exactly. We were fighting to exist.” How times change. In 2017, Australian women and girls are taking to the surf in record numbers. According to research by Roy Morgan, the number of female surfers in Australia jumped almost 20 per cent
between 2010 and 2014, and women now outnumber men in the under-25 age group. “Even in the past year or so there’s been more of a presence of girls in the water, so it’s less intimidating,” says Jess Barker, a 24-year-old yoga teacher, who began surfing in 2012. “Four years ago I was the only girl sometimes in a sea of 40 guys. It’s really cool now that a couple of my close girlfriends surf with me.” Jess Laing, a former junior professional surfer and the subject of the 2010 surf film First Love, started a surf school called Girls on Board on Phillip Island about five years ago after noticing a growing number of girls keen to try the sport. “I realised that there weren’t too many female coaches – just to give girls a bit of confidence to get out there and not be intimidated by the guys,” she says. Jess’ classes attract mostly girls between the ages of 10 and 16, and she says most of her students continue surfing after they’ve learned the ropes from her. “When I started surfing I was pretty young and there were pretty much only guys in the water. But that’s changing now,” she says. “The other day I went for a surf and I noticed there were more girls out there than guys, and to see that is really cool. I think it’s going to keep getting more and more popular with girls.” Many attribute the turning of the tide to the rise of formidable surfers such as Lisa Andersen and Layne Beachley, who burst onto the scene in the 1990s and inspired a generation of girls to take up the sport. “Lisa was my idol,” says Nikki van Dijk, the current world No. 11 and a Phillip Island local. “I’d watch every video she was in, everything she did. I was like, ‘I want to do it like Lisa’. It’s actually really funny now because we’re good friends and we see each other in the surf … To this day, she still doesn’t know how much I appreciate her as a surfer and as a person.”
A
bout the same time that Lisa and Layne began making waves, amateur surfing started to become more inclusive. Until the early ’90s, Pam Burridge recalls that “boards were so short, so thin, so narrow that only Kelly Slater and his friends could ride them”. The arrival of longboards and mini Malibus freed the way for all sorts of surfers. Where once it had been all about aggressive, masculine-style power surfing, surfers began to revere grace and elegance – where women often excel. No longer was it seen as negative to “surf like a girl”. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the changes have helped spawn a new generation of female prodigies. At just

12 years old, Newcastle’s Sabre Norris is making international headlines, as one of the youngest people ever to win a wildcard entry into a World Surf League competition. Meanwhile, eight-year-old Quincy Symonds (aka The Flying Squirrel) from Tweed Heads, is already a YouTube hit, and has just won the 2017 Gold Coast Wahu Grom Comp. She is sponsored by the likes of Rip Curl and GoPro, to name a few. Quincy namechecks current women’s world champion Tyler Wright, six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore and “the Maui boys” among her
idols – Tyler because she “charges” and “is really strong”. Her mother Kim says Olympic skier Lydia Lassila is another inspiration, “because she’s not happy to settle for being one of the best girls – she just wants to be one of the best skiers ever, taking away the male or female”. Quincy is thinking big for the future. “I want to make it on to the world tour,” she says. “I want to get barrelled at Teahupo’o. I want to do a backflip with an extra spin.” Her dreams are certainly more possible now than ever before. While women of all ages and abilities are signing up for surf retreats and surf schools across the country, the female pros just keep getting better. “Guys used to say, ‘That’s big for a chick’, but now they say, ‘That’s big’, full stop,” says Nikki van Dijk. “Steph Gilmore and Carissa Moore could probably surf a guy’s heat and win it. And that’s huge.” Women are also getting fiercer and more aggressive in the surf, executing aerials and manoeuvres traditionally attempted only by men, as well as charging big waves. Last year Hawaiian Keala Kennelly became the first woman to win Barrel of the Year (an open-gender event held at Tahiti’s Teahupo’o that judges the best ride in the tube of a wave) and women were allowed to compete at Hawaii’s Jaws – recognised as the biggest wave in the world – for the first time. Laura Enever, 25, was one of two Australian women to compete at the inaugural women’s Jaws, where waves can be up to nine metres high. “It was pretty wild,” she says. “I think women are pushing and empowering each other to do things we never really thought we could do.” After years riding in the wake of the boys, the pro girls say they still have a way to go before they are

treated equally. While the World Surf League now holds women’s competitions in the same locations as the men’s, the women claim they often have to compete in less desirable conditions (smaller, messier waves) on contest days, meaning less opportunity to perform at their best. “We’ll be in France or something and it’s a guys’ and girls’ event and it’s pumping, and it’s like, the guys are obviously going to be on,” Nikki says. “But why are the guys obviously going to be on? Why do we have second choice of who’s going to run?”

Fewer opportunities to perform at their best means less chance of securing sponsorship. And without sponsorship surfers struggle to fund their travel to the far-flung destinations where competitions take place. At the same time, some of the female pros lament that when they do work with sponsors, the focus is often on what they look like in a bikini, rather than their performance. Some pros have taken matters into their own hands, looking beyond major surf labels for sponsorship – Sally Fitzgibbons, for example, is sponsored by Samsung, Piping Hot, Canon, Novotel,

surfboard maker FCS Fins, JS Surfboards, Land Rover and Coco Joy coconut products. “I think the sexualisation in the sport was pushing a few buttons,” Laura Enever says. “I never want a young girl to think she has to look good in a bikini to be a professional surfer … I don’t want them to think they need to look a certain way to become their best.” On the plus side, the WSL has invested an unprecedented amount of money into the women’s sport, and women at the elite level now receive the same prize money as the men. In fact, 2016 women’s world champion Tyler Wright was on track to earn more last year than men’s champion John John Florence, before being narrowly pipped at the end of the season. Though there’s still a way to go, professional surfing is now a more viable option for women. “The money helps develop the talent,” Pam Burridge says. “Women can be fully professional. They’re paid to surf, and paid to train. It’s going to elevate the sport a lot.” Like the women of ancient Hawaii who, according to historian Matt Warshaw, “often carried off the highest honours” in surfing competitions, today’s female surfers are reclaiming their position in the water. And they’re showing no signs of slowing down. “I think that girls have realised that we can do it,” Nikki van Dijk says. “They can’t stop us. Who can stop us from getting better?” ● jhone@theweeklyreview.com.au » girlsonboard.com.au » worldsurfleague.com

HARI RAJ meets the man who inspired the latest hit aussie film

o one knows for sure how old Saroo Brierley was when fate and circumstance conspired to rip him away from all he knew. He might have been as young as four when he fell asleep on a decommissioned train while looking for his brother, a train that carried him more than 1600 kilometres across India, leaving behind his family, his home, his life. “As a child, I couldn’t really talk about my experience, because I didn’t know the language very well,” he says. “I didn’t have any friends; my only friend was my sister, who was around three years old. We were living in the slums and couldn’t afford to go to school. So my visual memory was heightened, and that’s what stayed with me.” After a series of trials and misadventures, young Saroo ended up in a Calcutta orphanage, from which he was adopted by Hobart couple Sue and John Brierley. As an adult he stumbled onto Google Earth, painstakingly using the then-fledgling technology and his powerful memories to retrace his journey and, eventually, reunite with his family – 25 years after losing them. It’s a tale that’s incredible in the truest sense of the word; if it were fiction you’d dismiss it out of hand. And it’s been brought to life in splendid form in a new film, Lion, with an all-star cast including Dev Patel as Saroo and Nicole Kidman as Sue. “It was surreal,” Saroo says of watching his life unfold on screen. “I was holding onto my seat really hard, trying not to tear up, but they just came pouring out. It’s an enthralling, enchanting movie.” Sue says she found it easy to relate to Nicole, “who went to a lot of trouble to get it right” – including the wonder of her very first meeting with Saroo, which she’ll never forget. “All my Christmases came at once,” she says. “He was just the sweetest little boy, and I could tell by looking into his eyes that he was special. All parents say that, but look what’s happened.” The Brierleys knew Saroo had lost his family, but the full details of his journey took time to emerge. “It was a gradual exposure of this Aladdin’s cave of information and history and intrigue,” Sue says. “We didn’t force the issue, we didn’t want it to seem like it was a condition of him being with us … and bit by bit, little things would pop out.” As heartwarming as the film is, Lion also captures the profound melancholy of belonging to two worlds and none. Saroo recollects friends noticing that his mind was elsewhere as he struggled to reconcile past and present. “It was a tough time. I’d take two or three hours to go to sleep, and then I’d dream of a sort of astral projection, coming out of my body and materialising in the streets that I used to walk at night. All of a sudden I’d be standing in front of the house I grew up in, and I’d go inside and try to project to my mother and my sister that I was alive, that I was OK.” When Saroo came across Google Earth, he realised he could harness his strong visual memories of his early childhood to help with his search. But he didn’t know how to spell the name of his hometown, or even where it was; it didn’t help that this was a time of slower internet speeds, which meant excruciating load times as he navigated the tangle of train tracks across India. Finally, in 2011, after five years of searching, he recognised some landmarks – a water tower, a quarry,

JEMIMAH CLEGG MEETS the new breed of AUSSIE DESIGNERS MAKING
a big SPLASH
SUNSOAKED
SWIMWEAR that’s fun, fashionable & functional
I
n the change room of a pop-up swimwear shop, designer Kate Davis Steer has made one of her customers cry – in a good way. “She came out with tears in her eyes at how great she felt,” Kate says. “She said, ‘I can’t remember the last time I felt good in some swimwear’.” Kate’s label SunSoaked is designed to give women confidence under the sun. Confidence in their bodies, but also confidence that they are protected from harsh UV rays. She’s just one of a slew of emerging Australian swimwear designers who are rethinking the way they design cossies, making them fun and fashionable, but above all, functional. Kate started SunSoaked in 2012 after a fruitless shopping expedition in her native Brisbane. “I was looking for a stylish rashie to wear on a beach holiday,” she says. “I couldn’t believe the lack of options out there, especially in Australia – the skin cancer capital of the world, unfortunately.” With her graphic design background, she decided she could create a range of sun-safe swimwear in beautiful fabrics to suit women of all sizes. “I’m very careful about my cuts – that I am cutting for a real woman’s figure and not something that only looks good on a size eight.” It’s a philosophy Melbourne designer Lulu Zagame has also taken to heart. She started swimwear label Robb & Lulu with her husband, designer Robert, in
2011 and wants all women to feel as good in Lycra as she does. “I remember when I bought my first pair of bikinis – it was a defining moment. I loved how they shaped my body and made me feel more like a woman,” Lulu says. As a former elite gymnast and activewear aficionado (she and her twin sister created activewear label Savage Sisters when they were 17), Lulu knows a thing or two about stretch fabric and how to work with it. “I’m quite scientific in my thinking,” Lulu says. “I do all my own pattern-making, my own grading, which involves a lot of maths. My art work is quite technical as well – I like to be quite anatomically correct.” Robb & Lulu has graduated from a few local stockists, to wholesaling in the US, where it has had recognition from fashion magazines, including Harper’s Bazaar, and has been invited to participate in the Miami Swim Show for the past two years. Its latest undertaking is a range designed for athletes and more serious swimmers, called Fit. “The Fit styles are conducive to performance sport. They’re made for athletes who spend a lot of time in the water, they stay on, they’re tight – very tight,” Lulu says. They’re also stylish. Bright colours and fun patterns hand-drawn by Lulu feature throughout the range, offering athletes the chance to wear something a bit different from regular black togs. “It bridges that gap between fashion and fitness – it’s a bit of a hybrid.”

Robb & Lulu “It bridges that gap between fashion and fitness.” – Lulu Zagame
Camp Cove Swim designer Katherine Hampton remembers those plain, dark bathers all too well from her days as a competitive swimmer. “My mum used to make me swimsuits to wear to training,” Katherine says. “Everyone else was in black Speedos and me and my little sister were in yellow and blue, sparkly, or hot pink little bikinis.” The 27-year-old from Newcastle launched her label in 2013, inspired by a dearth of retro-inspired styles and prints on the market. “I created unique prints that were hand-illustrated with a vintage feel – without being a vintage replica.” She now sells her handmade designs through US fashion site Moda Operandi, as well as her own website, and has been featured in Vogue Australia. Katherine also designs styles for “big boobies”, something she says is a no-brainer. “It just should be a normal thing,” she says. “Appreciating women in all different sizes and making people feel comfortable is so important, because I know swimsuits can be an intimidating thing to purchase.” Like Kate, Katherine has also had women come out of the change room wearing her designs and thanking her for making them feel comfortable in swimwear for the first time. “Fashion can be seen as something that’s not very important and as materialistic, but you need it in your everyday life, and it can make a difference to someone and how they feel about themselves,” she says. Lulu agrees. “I feel so much satisfaction with dressing a customer, knowing that what we’ve created fits and they feel comfortable,” she says. “It’s only small, but if you can make a difference to someone’s experience and they walk away happy, that makes me happy.” ● jclegg@theweeklyreview.com.au » sunsoaked.com.au » robbandlulu.com » campcoveswim.com

Tegan Higginbotham During December something terrible happened: I officially turned into my mother. I first realised something was wrong when I started telling people I’d just love socks or candles for Chrissy, which is a dirty lie. No one wants socks or candles for Christmas. They’re boring and smell weird. My weird bout of wholesome Christmas enthusiasm escalated even further when I decided was going to bake a gingerbread house from scratch. I cheerfully set about my task. But instead of appearing as if I were a part of some Mary Berry Christmas Special, I: – set the toaster on fire when I attempted to soften a stick of butter on top of it. – covered my oven in gingerbread biscuit dough when the cheap tray I’d purchased from the supermarket buckled. – cried on my kitchen floor. Twice. But in the end, I did it. It looked like a cardboard box that someone had sneezed on a lot. But I did it. ● » Tegan Higginbotham is a Melbourne comedian. Follow her on Twitter @TeganMH.

We used to go on holidays to Queensland occasionally. Of course, there was no Jetstar or Tiger so dad would pack us into the station wagon and we would drive two days to get there. This photo is from our holiday on the Gold Coast, which would have been the early ’70s. The Gold Coast used to be very old-fashioned and cute – no schoolies, no theme parks, no traffic. We were staying in a rundown big, old house right on the beach. It was also very near to the airport, so close we used to stand on the roof and try to hit the landing planes with brooms and rocks. One day this almighty bang hit the house. We thought it was a plane dropping something, but then we discovered a banana tree had fallen into the side of the house. That’s me on the left holding some of the bananas. With me are my two brothers, my nana, grandad, uncle Kev and mum (back when a family holiday meant ALL of the family). ●
I don’t have holidays because it’s too stressful; I get psychosomatic stress, physiological stress, psychological stress, behavioural stress and tinea from pool dressing room floors. I loathe the glossy brochures and websites that convince us we must have golden sands, turquoise water and cinematic sunsets (or the winter equivalent – perfect snow, blue sky, a glowing fireplace) in order to enjoy that once-in-a-lifetime holiday; they make a caricature of our aspirations. The last time I had a holiday in the tropics it rained all week, everything reeked of mildew and the ’60s acid casualty in the next cabin couldn’t be separated from his spear gun, which he called Mr Happy. And don’t get me started on the debacle that was the 42-Day Clog Tour of Holland. I don’t need the heartbreak of a local saying it hasn’t been this rainy/cold/humid since 1842. Or realising I’ve forgotten my antihistamines as I see a leech on my ankle. So yeah, happy holidays, and may the odds be ever in your favour. ●
When I was 11 we took a family holiday to Europe. We took the cable car up Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, and it was the first time I saw proper snow. I don’t think I ran because when you are 11 you can contain your excitement. Running was for six and nine-year-olds, like my brothers Ross and Ian. There was snow in the air and on the ground. I remember grabbing fistfuls of it, not realising that the cold makes your fingers ache so badly you can’t get the pain out of them. So I sat down on a little bench nursing my fingers and the next thing there was no one else there and the lights were off in the shop. Mum and dad and the boys had gone down with everyone else in the last cable car. After patting their pockets and realising their third child was missing, my parents raised the alarm. The cable car reversed back up to get me. I was only vaguely aware that something had gone wrong. ●

child starting school this year? MELISSA HEAGNEY gets expert tips on how to smooth the way
T
he first day of school is a huge milestone in the life of any child. While it’s an exciting rite of passage for those starting school (now known as foundation students), it can also be a stressful time – especially as parents and children often don’t know what to expect. Jenni Connor, researcher and writer with Early Childhood Australia, has co-written a book for parents about their children making the move to primary school. She says there are key things parents can help their children learn to ensure a smoother transition. Jenni, who has worked as a teacher and a primary school principal, says building a child’s life skills – such as their self-regulation and language skills – is key to a good school start. “Self-regulation includes a range of personal and social skills – being able to control their behaviour, so things like raising their hand to ask to go to the toilet rather than just leaving the room,” she says. “It also includes being able to organise themselves and persist with tasks, being able to pay attention for an extended time and being able to enter and exit play and friendship groups. “Language is important because it underpins social experiences and learning. The richer the child’s

tips for a successful start ● Involve your child in preparing for school, e.g. shopping for their uniform, school bag and lunch box.
Make sure they can manage their lunchbox and school bag. ● Plan for healthy lunches, snacks and water to drink. ● Help your child learn to dress themselves, and to use the toilet on their own. ● Establish the bedtime and morning routine they will have when they start school. It is very important that

they get enough sleep.
vocabulary, the easier it is to communicate and to understand the learning program.” Jenni says parents can help build their children’s vocabulary by reading to them, or reading along with them before the start of school. Parents can also help with their children’s transition by building strong relationships with their primary school teachers and understanding the different worries they may have. “All the literature says that relationships between the adults is key – and being aware that everyone has different concerns about starting school,” Jenni says. “A couple of years ago, the University of Melbourne did a piece of research on what worries children, parents and teachers about starting school. Children worry about the rules – will they be breaking them, or will they have friends or will there already be friendship groups, and they will be on their own? “Parents worry about that social adjustment but also worry about whether the teacher will like their child and realise how special they are. And teachers are mostly concerned about the capacity for children to fit into a large group, their behaviour and whether they can be independent when they need to be. All have different perspectives.”
Building confidence and familiarity with school can help reduce the stress of starting out in a new environment. Many children are already used to spending time in an early learning centre or preschool, but Jenni says simple things such as taking your child to visit their new school and familiarising them with the playground and classrooms where possible, can help build a child’s confidence. Many preschools and early learning centres organise school visits as part of their transition programs. While starting school is a big change for children, it’s also a transition for parents – requiring adjustments in their life at home and at work. Jenni says while parents may be used to their children attending childcare or an early learning cente, school can still be an emotional transition for them. “It can be part of an early empty nest feeling, particularly for those sending their children to school for the first time.” ● melissa.heagney@theweeklyreview.com.au » Early Childhood Australia will be release an updated version of its book Your Child’s First Year At School in February. » earlychildhoodaustralia.org.au

HOT PROPERTY
T
here seems to be no hard and fast definition of the term “townhouse’’, which once referred to a house in town owned by someone with a rural property. Whatever guise the properties take – single-storey, double-storey, multiples on a block or with their own title – there is no doubt that more and more Australians are choosing to put their hard-earned cash into them and leave the dream of a threebedroom house on a large block well behind. Townhouse development in Greater Geelong has boomed in recent years. When the sums are done, it makes sense to clear an old, characterless house from a 650 squaremetre block and build some townhouses. “You’ve got to have pretty deep pockets to tear down a property and put just one new house on it,’’ Shane King, of Harcourts North Geelong, says. “There’s a trend now of people not necessarily wanting a backyard.”
WITH PAUL CH A PPLE
It seems like a perfect solution to the lack of land in suburbs within easy reach of the CBD: developers get good returns on their investment and buyers have access to properties near shops and amenities. “Closer to Geelong the land is at a premium. People who would like a new home have to look at a townhouse.’’ Shane says there is a trend in places like Bell Park for single-level townhouses, built to cater for long-time local residents who want to downsize but stay close to shops, friends and churches. In Hamlyn Heights, on the other hand, many new townhouses are double-storey, catering for young professionals. Matt Plunkett, of Buxton Newtown, says many of their residents are from Melbourne – and that even young families are making the switch. “Some people still want the big backyard, but a lot of people don’t. All they want is enough room for a trampoline and a little
sandpit. If the kids are teenagers they don’t even need that,’’ he says. Matt has listed a two-storey, threebedroom, two-bathroom townhouse at 1a Searle Street, Geelong West. The attraction of two-storey, wellappointed townhouses for the young professional market is strong, according to David Phillips of Fruit Property. “Many are focused on career first,” he says. “They are in their 20s and 30s and don’t have time for maintenance. It’s about ease of living.” The large backyards of the past are also not available on new housing estates, David says. He sold 15 blocks last week in The Dunes Torquay. They ranged from 375 square metres to 480 square metres. “I think the quarter-acre block is long gone,” he says. He says townhouses have great appeal. “The CBD/cosmopolitan lifestyle is coming into Geelong in a big way.’’ ●

“You might have to jump outside your comfort zone,’’ Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant South Barwon) told a bidder at 6 Tania Drive, Highton, on Saturday. The man had kicked things off at $600,000 for the four-bedroom house with a bungalow out the back, but he was under pressure. The mark was at $665,000 and the crowd of 45 saw that going further was uncomfortable for the under-bidder. Kieron passed the property in, but sold it soon after to a local family for $669,000. ●

HOUSE OF THE WEEK HAMLYN HEIGHTS \ 9 MURRAY STREET
P
oised to be Hamlyn Heights’ first milliondollar property, this three-storey family house is worth that for its views alone. From the upstairs balcony, visitors and residents can enjoy an uninterrupted outlook from the You Yangs to the city, with the glistening waters of Corio Bay straight ahead. It’s easy to see the Giant Sky Wheel and Eastern Park while, by night, the city’s lights make a breathtaking backdrop. With contemporary Geelong draftsman Charles Maccora behind its design, the house is a masterpiece of modern luxury. But the high-end finishes are pared back by subtle raw textures that ensure it still feels like a home. It is a family house, after all. A bird’s eye timber panel on the staircase is an eye-catcher. Polished floorboards on the entrance and top levels, as well as timber-look tiles in the bathrooms, add warmth. The timber accents are also a nod to the original house on the block, a 1960s brick residence with art deco touches. Flexible floor plan takes on a new meaning in this five-bedroom house. The layout offers a variety of options for the new owners. For example, there are two designer kitchens, each as impressive as the other. The main kitchen is on the top floor, near the main bedroom, and offers sophisticated style and quality finishes. Grey stone benchtops are complemented by stainless-steel appliances, a glass splashback and two-tone cabinetry. It also has a spacious walk-in pantry and overlooks large meals and living areas. Sliding doors open to a wraparound balcony with bay views. Out here, there’s plenty of room to entertain guests. The second kitchen is on ground level. It also has stone benchtops and quality appliances, along with a storeroom and access to a potential wine cellar under the house. There is another large meals area and living zone here, with oversized sliding doors opening to a deck and the big backyard. With polished concrete flooring, this is a versatile indoor-outdoor room. Alternatively, if the grandparents decide to take up residence in the spare room, just up the stairs, this could be their kitchen and living space. The guest bedroom is one of four bedrooms on the entry level. It has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite and is next door to a carpeted living area. Bedrooms three, four and five are also carpeted and have built-in wardrobes, as well as easy access to the luxury main bathroom with floor-to-ceiling tiles and freestanding bath. On the top floor, the main bedroom is grand in every way, with a dressing room as well as a luxury en suite and views to the You Yangs. It’s a real parents’ retreat. The 1030-square-metre block has room to put in a pool if the new owners desire. Windows throughout the house are doubleglazed, and there is ducted vacuum and security. The double garage takes care of off-street parking and has internal access. This is a quality house in a family-friendly location. It is five minutes from the ring road and 10 minutes to central Geelong. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

As locations go in Geelong, it doesn’t get much better than this. The waterfront is just blocks away, as are the CBD and botanic gardens. The leafy streets are lined with statement houses, old and new. There’s no denying this one has seen better days, but that’s part of the romance – it’s waiting for someone to return it to its original splendour. There are glimpses of its old-world beauty, with towering ceilings, an ornate archway, leadlight windows and rooms of grand proportions. The grand old Victorian house is on a corner block of 855 square metres with three access points – one from Fitzroy Street, one from Park Street and the other from a rear lane. The entrance hall opens to both living areas, with the formal lounge to the left and a living area straight ahead. Walls of windows in the formal lounge capture the river outlook, making it the ideal spot to entertain guests. The living area is remarkably spacious and opens to the kitchen and meals zone, as well as the rear paved outdoor area. The kitchen has timber cabinetry and plenty of bench and storage space. The bedrooms also provide lots of storage. At the front of the house, the main has a large walkin wardrobe and an en suite with corner spa bath.
Bedrooms two and three each have built-in wardrobes and easy access to the main bathroom, which has a separate bath and shower. The house feels light and bright, largely because ot the east-facing windows and high ceilings throughout. With a block of 934 square metres, there is plenty of lawn for the kids to play on. The river walking tracks are a stroll away, while Highton Village is also within easy walking distance. Central Geelong is a 10-minute drive from here. ● SARAH BIESKE
