CREATE A DOMESTIC SANCTUARY WITH THESE SIMPLE TIPS, WRITES MEGAN BLANDFORD
mindfulness begins at home
Disconnect to reconnect Work, mobile devices, television screens – it feels like a demanding world that’s impossible to escape. But what if you could turn your home into a retreat from it all? “For many people, the home is turning into anything but a sanctuary,” Craig says. “Work is increasingly impinging on the home, largely because of technology, and families are retreating to separate spaces and screens.”
by the computer and screens, a space for your hobbies, a space to really rest and a quiet space to meditate,” Craig says. “If you really stop and be mindful and connect with each space, you might make a more conscious decision about how you decorate, which colours you use, the way you use light and how you bring greenery into the house.”
The mindfulness message is simple: switch it off. “You can make a conscious decision to turn the home into a more mindful and connected environment,” Craig says. “The environment can influence us in profound ways – for better or for worse – and we need to be conscious of creating an environment that helps us to connect, rather than one that’s distracted.” This doesn’t mean you have to turn your back on work when you’re at home – that’s unrealistic for many of us. But what we can do is be more conscious about how it comes into our space. “The home office can be a great facility,” Craig says. “It’s also a great space to close off and walk out of, ready to connect with the other people you’re living with.”
Be mindful of all five senses Being mindful incorporates every part of you, and you can play around with how this affects you at home. “You can connect with your home using all five senses,” Craig says. “A home that’s too dark, or with lighting that’s too harsh, can affect you, as can lots of noise and a sensory overload. There’s also the importance of smell and tasting meals where you connect with each other.”
How is the health of your home?
“Work is increasingly impinging on the home … & families are retreating to separate spaces & screens.”
You can create this retreat for the senses in each part of your home. “Create a space to dine together in, a bedroom that isn’t invaded

s mindfulness gathers momentum in our lives, 2017 could be the year of bringing the lifestyle trend into your home. “In many ways, the world is becoming faster-paced and we have a more distracted existence,” says Dr Craig Hassed, co-author of The Mindful Home. “We’re packing more things into our work and leisure time and we don’t have any sanctuary from this, which impacts on stress levels.” Your home serves many purposes, but in a busy world perhaps its most important calling is as a mindfulness retreat. “The home is the last frontier: an opportunity to find some real peace, space and connection in our lives,” Craig says.
Mindfulness incorporates more than you might have imagined, and living with this level of consciousness spreads throughout every aspect of your home. “The home can either be healthy or unhealthy,” Craig says. “Think about the kinds of chemicals and products you’re exposed to. Being mindful is a way of living.” Ultimately, the aim of creating a mindful home is to give you an opportunity to recharge. “We can then go back out into the world feeling refuelled and refreshed and deal with the things we need to deal with.” It can be more than a pipe dream. Create a mindful home and your space could help you to be mindful in life. ● FEBRUARY 23, 2017 \ DOMAIN GEELONG 5

he last time I hung with Jimmy Barnes was when I cadged a lift with him to an outdoor gig he was headlining. It was the quintessential rock moment: while Jimmy bounced around excitedly in the back of the limo, fans peered in to see if it really was Jimmy in there. When they saw that mischievous face framed by the famous flop of tousled hair, they smiled and pointed and waved. And Jimmy smiled and pointed and waved right back. At that moment, while presenting to the world as the ultimate happy-go-lucky rock’n’roll wild man, Jimmy had inside him a million demons stemming from a youth marked by unspeakable violence, poverty, alcoholism and many bashings – which he both received and dished out. Now he has brought those demons into the open with his new autobiography, Working Class Boy Boy. and a national spoken-word tour coming to Geelong in April. “I went through different emotions,” he says of writing the book. “I’d write stuff down and I’d be teary or I’d be angry. I loved my parents and they tried the best they could and I’m very forgiving of them, but sometimes I’d finish a bit and I’d be really angry because they shouldn’t have let us be treated that way. “Quite often I’d be lying in bed after writing and it would trigger off all these other memories, which led to another and another … It was quite taxing, but at the same time every step of the way I felt that weights were being lifted off me.” The poverty, violence and neglect Jimmy suffered as a child are shocking. At Christmas, he writes, “we didn’t want all the toys in the world. All we wanted was for them to love us and make us feel safe”. Now 60, Jimmy is in a great place. He still rips the room apart on stage, but at home he is the happy and healthy family man, free of the burdens of hell-raising. He doesn’t need to be the wild man any more. He exorcised most of his demons writing the book. There may be a three-day growth, but it’s not cheap wine any more, rather a quiet whisky before bed. Jimmy says the words poured out of him while writing the book. “I’d spent a lifetime pushing them down and trying to suppress them. It was like a festering wound and I had to open it up to the air to let it heal. When I finished writing it I literally thought, ‘I could rip this up now, it’s done its job, I’ve acknowledged it’. “There is a lot of stuff that people are still going through out there. I’ve been doing book signings around the country and so many people are stopping me and saying, ‘Hey, I’m living in this now, what can I do, how can I talk about this?’. I’m telling people to get 6 DOMAIN GEELONG \ FEBRUARY 23, 2017

professional help and, if you’re in an abusive situation, get away from it. “It’s the sort of stuff that has to come out, that Australia as a society has to have a conversation about. There’s a lot of domestic abuse in this country, but people don’t talk about it. It’s kept in the dark. “Maybe my book shines a little bit of light on it, and the more light you can shine on this stuff the better.” He begins the book with his alcohol and violence-soaked early youth in Glasgow, , surrounded by drunk adults, and later in the tough Adelaide satellite city of Elizabeth, to which his family migrated in 1962. “There was a lot of drinking in the house,” he writes, “and with that came a lot of violence and abuse; not necessarily directed
at us, but every punch and threat that mum and dad threw around hit each of us as if we’d been thrown against the wall.”
A
buse and trauma “became normalised for us”, he says. “We would climb out the windows, run away, block things out of our heads. As kids we were more afraid our parents were going to die than we were going to die. It put me in a lot of bad situations. It put me in a lot of places where I really could have been killed. “By the time I was 17 and left, I didn’t reflect on much of that stuff ever again, until recently. I was just glad to be out of there. I did everything to stop myself thinking about it. And that includes drinking myself to death nearly. I was very lucky to get through it.”
Jimmy, top of the class and soccer captain, lost interest in school because he was distracted by the abuse. “School was a place where I could go and the teachers liked me because I could work hard, because I was interested. But eventually you get to a point where you go to school and your feet are freezing cold and wet because you haven’t got decent shoes, and you’re hungry and your parents are fighting at home so you’re worried and I just couldn’t even concentrate … that was a really sad time, looking back on it.” His mother left the family in 1965, when Jimmy was nine. “The last bit of light in our lives was put out that day,” he writes. “She told us she wouldn’t leave, she loved us too much.” Jimmy and his siblings later resettled with their mother and new husband, Reg Barnes.
from that past as much as I could and become as successful as I could. “It made me tough. It made me strive for stuff that was out of my reach. The way I was treated as a child, the abuse, the trauma, and the love from our siblings, the way we cared for each other, all seemed like a perfect melting pot to make a rock’n’roll singer. “At 17, all I wanted to do was be wild and free and to make people like me, and I was prepared to do anything, jump around and be crazy, to do it. “Unfortunately I realised if I drank loads and went crazy and played up and screamed, people liked the band. It appeared to me that the more I did that, the more people liked us. So that made me more self-destructive.”
i
Jimmy writes warmly about Reg, who came to have a fatherly role in his life. Reg, who died in 2011, told the young Jimmy there was an angel looking after him. “Well, he was that angel,” Jimmy says. “Most of the adults said, ‘Shut up, get away’. Reg was the only one who looked me in the eye and said, ‘What’s going on, are you OK?’. I owe a lot to Reg. He was a shining light in my life.” I ask Jimmy how his youth shaped him. “People who have come from that sort of poverty and that sort of abuse and trauma tend to try and overachieve,” he says. “When I was a young fella I got in gangs, I could fight better than most people. As I got older I could drink more, I could sing louder, I wanted to be a successful singer. Without knowing it I was trying to distance myself
t was always a thrill watching Cold Chisel’s lead singer being so wild, but there was a huge cost to him. “One of the things I am thankful for from my parents is strong genes. I am tough. When I go and have a physical now, I can’t believe, after the life I’ve led, the doctors say I’m so healthy. “I had people dropping like flies around me because I could just outlast everybody. In the end it wasn’t really about having a good time, it was to numb and to stop thinking. “When I didn’t drink and when I didn’t take drugs and when I stood still and stopped for a second, the stuff from the past would start to come back to me and it was haunting me. So I constantly moved, constantly drank, to stop feeling, to stop any sort of feeling.” Jimmy’s mother Dot died last year, aged 83, the day Jimmy was sent the final edit of the book. “At that point I was feeling sad and I wanted to take everything out I’d written about her but it wouldn’t have been honest.” He spoke to his siblings about the book but not to his mother “because she was guilt-ridden”. “She was like me, she would have blocked it out as if it never happened.” After years of drug and alcohol abuse, Jimmy says he is better than he’s ever been. “I went to rehab in 2001 and [later] had bouts where it was good and bad, but I had about eight years where I was very clean. I can now sit in front of the TV with my feet up and have a whisky before I go to bed, whereas before I never drank for the taste, I would drink to get hammered and to forget. Now that’s the last thing I want to do.” Music, which is the basis of his next book, helped save his life. “In the midst of all this chaos and drinking and fear and shame, music was the thing that was the light for me. The stuff that was killing me, the only time it ever got vented without me knowing it, expressed itself in songs. That was the therapy for me, to let them out.” “I reckon it was primal therapy. I can peel the paint off walls. I’m a good singer, I can sing well and I know I can scream better than most people in the world. Part of it was my way of letting out that anger.” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au » Join Jimmy Barnes for Working Class Boy: an evening of stories and songs at Geelong Performing Arts Centre, April 7. he dense Otway ranges and surrounding areas of Victoria southwest of Geelong harbour more than a few curiosities. They vary across the geographic, social, natural, historic and mystical. Crater lakes, volcanoes, secret wartime air bases, UFOs, shipwrecks, dinosaurs, carnivorous snails, quicksand deaths ... these are among the better-known tales you’ll find. However, one story from this mysterious part of the world is told in more hushed tones, most often by people fearful of being ridiculed for what they say they saw. Their names and photographs are not readily offered. But their reports are being catalogued and investigated, forming a body of work that’s hard for critics to dismiss. And the public accounts of people such as former senator Bill O’Chee have bolstered the credibility of preceding witness statements. The former Queensland senator’s description of an encounter with a giant two-legged primate – commonly known as a yowie, or in Aboriginal culture, a hairy man – may be a little clinical. But if you think of what might be lurking out there in the bush, his account is chilling.
Dean Harrison, of Australian Yowie Research, has recorded three regional yowie sightings: two in the Otways – one at Beauchamp Falls near Beech Forest, the other at Carlisle River about 20 kilometres south of Colac – and another in the Stony Rises. He says the creatures are hunters and trackers and familiar with humans. One witness, who wants only to be known as “Kelly” relates the Stony Rises episode, which occurred in 2012: “I was driving back from Warrnambool ... something caught my eye racing through the trees. “It was running really fast, that’s when I realised it wasn’t a human. It looked like a human with a black coat on but as I came closer I realised the coat was actually hair. It was running so fast I thought it was either going to hit the fence or jump the fence and come out on to the road. “I was in shock, I mean, I had the kids in the car. I explained it to my daughter ... and she said, ‘That sounds like what the Aboriginals talk about in the Dreamtime that eats children’. I said, ‘Oh my god, I’ve got to get out of there’, I was terrified. “Everyone thinks I’m nuts but ... I mentioned it to a workmate and she said,

warning look from the animal “as if to say, ‘What are you doing?’ Then I got the fear in me and went back,” he says. Dean Harrison says local reports of a hairy man, specifically something akin to an orang-utan, date back to 1847. He says the Otways offer an ideal hideaway for unknown species, as does much of Australia, and he argues Aboriginal lore is full of yowie stories. He says he’s received thousands of reported sightings. “I get reports every couple of days, it is so prevalent it’s ridiculous,” he says. “Maybe one person in 10 comes forward, because there is a fear of ridicule. “It’s happening, all the time, and it’s life-changing. I’ve had the most hardened farmers and hardened truckies in tears. Farmers saying, ‘I’ve lived here all my life and I never saw anything until ...’ ”
“This thing was immense ... It stood there looking at me for what seemed like a lifetime.”
Curious creature: A collection of yowie sculptures.
‘You don’t know about yowies? My father used to see them around the Hamilton area’.” The encounter at Beauchamp Falls, by “Glen”, took place one afternoon. He says he has lost friends as a result of telling his story. “I heard a noise ... a cough of sorts, it was very low and deep and powerful, similar to what a koala might make,” he says. “I turned off the track and I went into the forest about three or four feet adjacent to the track and [was] looking at the ground when something caught my eye probably about 12 or so metres ahead of me ... a very large, dark
brown figure among the saplings. “Your mind tries to make sense of what you’re looking at. I thought it was a large deer ... this thing stood up and was facing me and my whole world changed right then. This thing was immense ... “It stood there looking at me for what seemed like a lifetime. Basically, I was looking at a large bipedal primate of sorts. It was something I never expected to see.” The creature took off after about a minute. Glen followed it towards a fire trail where it turned. In clearer light, he perceived a
asquatch, Bigfoot and the Yeti all seem to Syowie. bear some relationship to the Australian Witness descriptions are decidedly
similar. The creature is tall with bristly hair covering its body, apart from its face, which appears lined. It is thin and powerfully muscled, fast on its feet, has long fingers and toes and is a prodigious tree climber. But the animal’s shynes doesn’t mean it’s potentially friendly, says Dean. He says he’s had his own run-ins. “I’m 100 per cent certain they’re responsible for many bush deaths. I myself have nearly been killed,” he says. “In the past 20 years, I’ve been to many call-outs on the east side of Australia and
in yowie habitats all over the country. I’ve found myself in tricky situations. “In 1997, at Ormeau in the Gold Coast Hinterland, this thing was stalking me like a predator. I thought it was a human and let it come close. It wasn’t human, it had this ginormous roar and pursued me. It ran about three times my pace, smashing trees and logs.” Dean managed to make his escape but in another incident, at Kilkivan in Queensland, he says he was hit by one. The yowie struck him “in the chest”, sending him hurtling. The animal took off and Dean was rescued by fellow trackers. His third yowie account from the Otways dates to 1980 when, as he writes: “Wes and four friends were outside a house ... near the Carlisle River overlooking a gully. “Tony had spotted something below and looked further with binoculars. ‘Hey, take a look at this!’ he said. The group passed the binoculars around and over the course of eight or nine minutes they witnessed a creature Wes described as ‘Chewbacca’. “It was huge ... It was sitting on a clay embankment in the sun, looking peaceful, with its arms wrapped around its legs. Wes said they were all freaked out at what they were seeing. ‘We knew exactly what it was’. “Eventually, a tractor came down the dirt road in a cloud of dust and the creature ... ran into the forest ... “It was a lot taller than a normal person. It was six foot five, reddish brown, with long hair, matted’.” ● » yowiehunters.com.au

Ask the wine guy I’ve just put in a cellar as part Q of a renovation and have been filling it with some of my favourite
wines. They’re years off being ready to open – can you suggest some wines for short-term cellaring that I can enjoy while they mature?
Most wine is consumed within a few A hours of purchase and a lot of wine is made to be enjoyed within a year of
release. What you need are wines with the structure to age – bright acid flavours with a bit of density and, in the case of reds, tannins that offer a drying grip. I reckon these wines will be great over the next decade. ● GOT A QUESTION EMAIL \

Wynns Shiraz 2015 (Coonawarra) $25; 13.5% Cabernet is king in Coonawarra, but the region also produces elegant cool-climate shiraz. A fruit-driven bouquet is filled with cherry, blackberry, plus oak and spice. In the mouth it leans into savoury territory, with berry and plum flavours, earthiness and a nice mesh of fine-grained tannins that drive its long finish. ● Enjoy with \ Cassoulet
Williams Crossing Chardonnay 2015 (Macedon Ranges) $26; 12.6% Williams Crossing is a bit of an insider’s wine – it’s made from declassified barrels of Curly Flat, one of Australia’s most highly regarded producers. It’s a consistent bargain and will be great drinking from today for at least another five years. It tastes of peach and oatmeal, cucumber and honey spread on toast. ●
Frankland Estate Riesling 2016 (Frankland River) $28; 12.5% Grown on ironstone soils in the cold hills of the southern tip of Western Australia, where a long ripening period creates riesling of perfume and vibrant natural acidity. Floral orange, lime and potpourri aromas rise seductively from the glass, before juicy mineral and lime flavours effortlessly fill the mouth. ● Enjoy with \ Pan-fried
Enjoy with \ Roast chicken
D’Arenberg The Footbolt Shiraz 2014 (McLaren Vale) $18; 14.6% This is a wine that has a pedigree for short-term ageing. Bright and fruity – perfect for cool evenings – it’s all dark berries, dark chocolate and plums with vibrancy. Its bright acid and set of firm tannins that will soften over the next few years indicate that what is already good drinking will only improve. ● Enjoy with \ Steak and chips

All Fall Down Cassandra Austin » $29.99 (Penguin) penguin.com.au
Ryan Adams \ Prisoner (EMI) paxamrecords.com
Alien spaceships descend across the globe and, for once, they haven’t come to exterminate us. In fact, nobody seems to be sure what ET wants. Linguist Louise (Amy Adams) is sent to translate, but the clock is ticking as the world sinks into nuclear-flavoured xenophobic panic. In lesser hands, this would be a brash blockbuster, but director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario) delivers a complex, intelligent and ultimately very moving twist on familiar territory. Amy is predictably brilliant in the lead. ●
There are no easy terms to describe this new series from Community’s Donald Glover (AKA rapper Childish Gambino). Comedy is probably the closest fit, but it feels like a disservice to the abundance of uncomfortable, confronting and dramatic moments it delivers. At times it appears to be set in a surreal, parallel world. For some viewers, this might seem appropriate given the show’s stated aim of trying to vividly capture life as an African-American. It’s very much worth your time – be sure not to miss it. ●
This debut novel from Aussie writer Cassandra Austin has a rich, allegorical feel. A bridge mysteriously collapses, cutting an outback town in two. Into the aftermath comes Melbourne teen Rachel, who quickly falls for local hunk Shane. The only problem is, he’s having an affair with married woman Janice, who was injured in the accident (if it really was an accident). Strange and spooky, this work is not so much a thriller as a small human drama brushed up with red dirt mysticism. ●
Not to be confused with the guy who sang Summer of ’69, Ryan Adams is, nonetheless, a veteran rocker. Prisoner is the 42-year-old’s 16th studio album (not counting the three he made with old band Whiskeytown). It’s hard to keep up with that level of productivity, but this is a serious return to form. A potent, soulful portrait of heartbreak, it shows Ryan working at his peak – which tends to be located somewhere between Bono and Bruce Springsteen. ●

here are a few areas to focus on to get the best return for your money in terms of adding amenity and value to your home.
Where to spend Personal circumstances are bound to be different from household to household, as are the structural and maintenance requirements from home to home. That said, there are a few areas to focus on to get the best return for your money in terms of adding amenity and/ or value to your home.
Make a splash A pool might seem like a luxury, but sometimes a pool can provide a well-considered and delivered addition to a house’s entertainment amenity – one that can add substantial value. Take, for example, the house sold on The Block All Stars in 2013 for $1.4 million. Contestants Mark and Duncan made $25,000 profit on auction day.

12 DOMAIN GEELONG \ FEBRUARY 23, 2017
Architectural interest There are many houses on the market that were designed or renovated in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s and were mass-produced. The relatively low-fuss approach included repeated floor plans and low levels of detail and internal finish. Often all it takes to breathe life and value into these houses is a little more attention to the build in the form of enhanced architectural detail. Sometimes, that might be replacing cornices, elsewhere it might be a staircase revamp. Whatever the requirement, by looking at a bland or featureless interior and thinking about what is missing in its structure, it is possible to turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse.
Taking shape Luxury: The pool at the House for Art Collectors in Woollahra, by architects Marsh Cashman. (WILLEM RETHMEIER)
The property sold again three years later. Relatively unchanged, except for the addition of a modest backyard pool, it fetched more than $2.5 million in 2016. Obviously, market growth and an amazing purchase price had a great deal to do with the 86 per cent growth in three years. But in prestige areas with houses of high quality, a pool can be the perfect way to add value.

Above: Darren Palmer turned a bedroom into a luxe living space. (FELIX FOREST \ IMAGE FROM HOMESPACE) P PACE)
There are opportunities to increase amenity in a home by altering the internal layout. Connecting living spaces to the outdoors, where possible, is a safe bet. That can mean repurposing bedrooms as living spaces or shuffling functions and locations of rooms to connect living spaces to outlooks and natural light while sheltering sleeping spaces from noise and light. By simply taking a macro view of your home’s floor plan and thinking about how it could be improved you might unearth hidden space in an ill-considered floor plan. ● » Extract from HomeSpace, by Darren Palmer (Murdoch Books, RRP $39.99)

Caring for the Barwon Region
P
rivate pools have always had an air of luxury, but the 21st-century version amps up the glamour to a whole new level, and when it comes to creativity, the scope for imagination is greater than ever before. These days, architects tend to make the pool a focal point of their design, positioning it right near the house – sometimes close enough to abut the back windows. It becomes an extension of the building, forming a connection between the indoors and the outdoors, providing a calming expanse of water that can be viewed through the windows of the living areas and make a stunning and ever-changing backdrop to the interior of the home. Damien Long, director of Premier Pools, says the trend towards integrating the pool with the house started in recent years. “When I grew up in the ’80s, pools were down the backyard and the parents would yell out when dinner was ready,” he says. “Now, they’re very much part of the house, even with the house sitting on them, so the water’s flush.”
Shimmering mirage As a general rule, pools tend to be smaller than in previous decades, measuring an average of about 7 metres by 3.5 metres, he says. Traditional shapes, such as rectangles, are still the most popular choice, but circular or even triangular pools are an option. Glass tiles, covering part or all of the pool, are another design direction. The overall look is one of light-catching iridescence and luxurious sophistication.
Room with a view: Pools that can be viewed through the living areas make a stunning backdrop. (DEAN BRADLEY)
The knife-edge pool is another key trend. Like infinity pools, knife-edge pools have a flat, glass-like appearance, but while infinity pools have visible ledges, the knife-edge pool never shows any flooded coping. The sleek, sexy, is-it-a-mirage-or-is-it-real effect is achieved through a complicated feat of engineering whereby water flows out of the pool through pointed ends then back again via slots hidden underneath. When it comes to fencing, glass panels that present an uninterrupted view of the pools are the most popular choice.
COULD YOUR KITCHEN DO WITH A FACELIFT...AT LESS COST?
Au naturale Pools that rely on natural filtration systems are also growing in popularity. The technology, originally developed in Austria, uses a phosphorous filter that removes nutrients from water so algae cannot grow, just as in an alpine lake. The technology was used to great effect in a circular pool that blends with its riverside bushland setting at Melbourne’s Fairfield House, designed by Kennedy Nolan architects in conjunction with Sam Cox Landscape. ●

t was a 10am start for Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant South Barwon) on Saturday as he faced a crowd of 40 outside 31 Culzean Crescent, Highton. “You’ll YYou’ll be in the box seat to watch all of Geelong’s fireworks,’’ Kieron said, referring to the fabulous view from the renovated fourbedroom brick house. A full-on two-horse race soon unfolded, an opening bid of $600,000 left in the dust as the offers raced to $700,000. Finally, after 36 bids, the hammer came down at $755,000. The underbidder was quick to congratulate the winner as the goodnatured contest came to an end. The winners, who live in NSW, are returning to Geelong. It turned out that the first auction of the day was a portent of what was to come as Ben Riddle (Buxton Newtown) ended up fielding 58 bids at 316 Shannon Avenue, A Newtown. Thirty-five onlookers gathered in the backyard of the two-storey, four-bedroom

character weatherboard and, once again, it was a genuine two-horse race. “We’ve got a real surge of Melbourne buyers coming to Geelong,’’ Ben said, before posting an opening vendor bid of $680,000. Two young couples fought it out and took T the mark to $775,000 before the hammer came down. The auctioneer’s opening remarks proved pertinent, the winners being a young couple from Melbourne.
It was out-of-towners from the other direction – the Otways – who took the prize at 23 Edgecombe Street, Hamlyn Heights, a three-bedroom weatherboard with sweeping views over Corio Bay. A crowd of 75 saw Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) take an opening bid of $400,000 and, as if it was the theme of the day, a two-horse race began. A man standing across the street always seemed to have the upper hand. In the end, however, a party on the nature strip got the prize when the hammer came down at $478,000. The property was bought as a family investment. Joe’s colleague, Nick De Stefano, earlier negotiated a sale post-auction at 30 Myrtle Grove, North Shore. The three-bedroom house on more than 1000 square metres was snapped up by a Melbourne buyer, who plans to relocate, for $500,000. ●

hat constitutes luxury can be subjective and largely personal. But there’s no denying this grand five-bedroom residence just a block from Western Beach is the essence of luxury in every sense of the word. It’s extravagant, indulgent, sophisticated and, for those fortunate enough to call it home, it promotes the finer things in life with high-end finishes to match. The timeless facade makes a striking first impression, with five arched windows on the first floor adding a Mediterranean flavour to the design. This continues out the back, with a resort-style pool area that would look right at home in Spain. It also looks right at home here, just minutes from Geelong’s CBD. The double-door front entrance instantly portrays a sense of space and the grand entrance hall more than delivers on that promise. A ceiling void over the curved timber staircase fills this area with light and makes for an impressive welcome to the home. But why start at the front of the house when the back is clearly the star of this show? The open-plan zone at the rear is a remarkable space, both because of its size but also its striking style – particularly the kitchen. When you set eyes on it, it’s hard to look away. The twotoned design works beautifully, with a large black island bench finished with a white stone benchtop. The back and side benches are the opposite, with black stone benchtops. White joinery ensures the black splashback tiles and black Smeg cooker stand out even more. Bifold doors off the living area lead to a patio, overlooking the swimming pool and gazebo. It’s an area designed for those who love to entertain. There’s more entertainment space on the ground floor, with a theatre room, while an upstairs rumpus is a place for the kids to take over – or for the parents to escape to. Four of the five bedrooms are upstairs. The spacious main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with dual vanities and a corner spa bath. The main bedroom also opens to a balcony overlooking the pool. Bedrooms two and three have walk-in wardrobes, while the fourth has built-in wardrobes. The fifth bedroom is downstairs, just inside the front entrance, and also has built-ins and could easily double as an office. The main bathroom upstairs has an eggshell bath with white floor and wall tiles keeping the area light and bright. There’s another great little space upstairs that’s could be a reading nook or study area, depending on your needs. Also among the home’s features are central heating, evaporative cooling, a security system and double garage with remote-controlled door. From here you can stroll to the waterfront’s restaurants, bars and playgrounds, as well as Pakington Street’s cafes and boutique shops. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

NORTH SHORE \ 61 THE ESPLANADE “Undiscovered” is a word so often used to describe this bayside pocket of Geelong. How a location such as this can remain such a secret seems surprising, but it is. It’s largely because unless you have a reason to drive here, you won’t. That’s one of the many reasons residents love it so much; the streets are quiet, traffic is minimal and they get to enjoy the views and the parkland mostly to themselves. Along with the bay frontage, the block sizes here are remarkable and this one is no exception. The threebedroom house sits on a 1848-square-metre allotment with uninterrupted views of the bay and Geelong’s CBD. There are rambling gardens front and back, mature trees, garages and even stables at the rear of the block. For its new owners, this is a huge canvas on which to create a dream home. The house has been immaculately maintained but has potential to be updated. An enclosed foyer is a great spot to sit and enjoy the water views, while a northfacing sunroom at the back is bathed in natural light. The expansive carpeted living area also captures the bay outlook and opens to a spacious dining room. The central kitchen overlooks the sunroom and backyard. The bedrooms are all at the east end of the house, with walk-in wardrobes to bedrooms one and two and built-ins in the third. Each has easy access to the main bathroom, with corner spa bath and separate shower. There’s a second shower in a bungalow in the backyard. It’s just 10 minutes to the CBD from here, while the Melbourne road is just five minutes away, making it ideal for commuters. ● SARAH BIESKE
