moved to Geelong for love. I was born and raised in Sydney and had been living in Melbourne, working as a project manager with Telstra. Although I loved the city, I had a real longing for a sense of community. You get a bit lost when you’re working in a high-profile job with long hours and I didn’t love sitting in traffic. After I got divorced, a friend got me on RSVP and that’s where I met my partner, a gorgeous Irishman named Michael, who settled in Geelong. We had an 18-month long relationship and were very cautious, but it was clear we wanted to be together. Jack, my youngest son, was just about to go into year 11 when we decided to make the move to Geelong. It was easy to transfer with

couple who live in a modern white house in Kew also had a sweet postwar weatherboard cottage on one of the million-dollar sites on the hill behind Lorne. They wanted to add elevation to the building to make more of the endless west-coast views, but they didn’t want to destroy their shack in doing so. “It was an important member of the family”, Andrew Maynard says. His design firm, Austin Maynard, was approached with “the difficult brief” to create new upper-level living quarters that would not dominate the existing house, or intrude on the neighbour’s visual or scenic amenity. Andrew says he felt those parameters as an onus “of great responsibility”. “We needed to be very careful and to keep the elevation as recessive as possible,” he says. As it happens, Tasmanian-raised Andrew is a beach shack kind of guy. “I have such fond memories of timber holiday shacks that instantly say ‘relax’,” he says. Working with design colleagues Mark Austin and Natalie Miles, his solution was to retain the original cottage as two bedrooms, a bathroom, laundry and playroom. Then, above and behind the ridge of the

cottage’s projecting front bay, they created a platform which supports a 10-metre by six-metre timber-lined, cabin-like living and kitchen space. Up a spiral stairs created by award-winning manufacturer Enzie, the main room with its magnificent views is all timber – silver-top ash or bolted hardwood – from kitchen bench to cabinetry. “We didn’t want white glossy,” says Andrew. “All parties wanted anything but another McMansion in a holiday hamlet.

“i have such fond memories of timber holiday shacks” - andrew maynard

Why go from one McMansion to have the identical experience in another?” He says the coffered shape of the roof, which flattens at the front over enormous double-glazed windows, works like a picture frame. “It draws your eye out to the views.” Upstairs there are no decks, “because up high, it’s always too windy”. The outdoor spaces are all downstairs, where the new platform has created a casually unfussy undercroft. It’s clad in light-softening

opaque polycarbonate which adds no unnecessary mass to the building. It creates an undefined amenity that feels very familiar to Andrew. “All of our favourite shacks when we were kids had odd spaces, indoors and out” he says. “Adaptable, mutable spaces that accommodate whatever holiday recreation activity might match your relaxed holiday mood.” ●

A

They should be, but practice doesn’t always match the theory. When you get into $30 territory, you’re drinking wines that reflect the region they’re from. Play to their strengths and pick wines that have a regional track record. Chardonnay with a grapefruit accent from the Yarra Valley or the intense stonefruit and citrus flavours from Margaret River should hit the spot most of the time. ● GOT A QUESTION EMAIL \

Margaret River chardonnay is all about concentrated, powerful flavour and the citrus and stonefruit aromas here hint at what’s to come. A creamy texture delivers driving stonefruit and lemon, minerality and just a little spice from its time in oak. It zips through the mouth, thanks to its vibrant acidity and the lightest dusting of tannins. ●

Cremant is a French term that indicates a sparkling wine with half the fizz of normal sparkling wine. Here, it’s a genius move. It’s so drinkable and full of character – from the zesty lemon, peach and yeasty almond aromas to the zippy, lightly fizzy citrus and brioche flavours. A dry acid structure and lengthy finish seal the deal. ●

Here’s a wine that makes a real case for decanting – from an impressive start, this got better and better in the decanter. Director Tom Ford brings a clinical sort of glamour to this gripping, cerebral revenge film. Susan (Amy Adams) has a superficially perfect life, existing in a wealthy, airless clique. When first husband Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal) sends her his new novel, she is drawn to its visceral thrills. The film also casts Jake as the hero of Edward’s novel, playing out its grim tale alongside Susan’s memories of their doomed marriage. Fact and fiction blur until Edward’s reality seems more vital and compelling than Susan’s own. ●

Focusing on the disappearance of a young English boy in a small French town, the first series of this BBC mystery drama was a surprise success. The sequel necessarily shifts to a different family and a German setting. A British couple’s daughter turns up 10 years after disappearing without trace. The French detective responsible for the original investigation (Tcheky Karyo, reprising his role) comes out of retirement to tie up loose ends. With twists galore, this is unbearably tense television. ●

he nearby Pako Festa was a great backdrop for Dave Gray (Buxton Highton) as he fielded more than 80 bids at 72 Aberdeen Street, Geelong West, on Saturday. It was tricky for the 55 onlookers to find a parking spot near the old, fourbedroom, double-storey house on almost 830 square metres. Once assembled in the backyard, however, they enjoyed a show of spirited bidding. “One thing is certain,” Dave said. “This location can’t get any better.’’ An ambitious opening offer of $500,000 got things going and six parties had a go at the prize. The bids kept on coming and soon hit $700,000. An older woman kept batting away her opponents. When the mark reached $760,000, her work was done, and Dave brought down the hammer in her favour. A local, the woman was tight-lipped about her plans for the property. Dave earlier sold 57 Heytesbury Street, Herne Hill, where a crowd of more than 100 saw a young couple take the prize at $500,000 after a five-way contest. Bidding began at $350,000 and it was on the market at $450,000. The couple plan to live in the three-bedroom weatherboard. There was also a big crowd at 2 Perth Street, Belmont, to see Ian Nichols (Barry Plant Highton) put the four-bedroom character weatherboard up for sale. “High Street (Belmont) will be the next Pakington Street,’’ Ian told the 90 onlookers. “Then just watch the prices increase.’’ Four parties fought it out; an opening gambit of $520,000 rising to $580,000 before Ian brought the hammer down. The buyers, a young Melbourne couple, plan to relocate. Across the highway and down the road Dylan T Taggert (Buxton Geelong East) faced 55 people outside the three-bedroom brick

Dylan earlier brought down the hammer at 174 Autumn Street, Geelong West, at $695,500. Five parties vied for the four-bedroom brick house on just under 600 square metres but it went to the next-door neighbours who plan to use it as another family residence. It was a big day for the firm as Andy Ingham (Buxton Newtown) got away 396 Autumn Street, Herne Hill, a fourbedroom weatherboard on 1000 square metres. Bidding began at $350,000 in front of a crowd of 45. Buyer’s advocate Tony Slack, bidding for a local investor, jumped in with an offer of $420,000. After 35 bids, it was his for $605,000. In Bell Park ark at 13 Yaraan Street, Lloyd Moulton (Barry Plant Geelong) told the 35 onlookers there was plenty of potential

in the three-bedroom weatherboard. “The reward is there for someone prepared to roll up their sleeves,’’ he said, before an opening bid of $250,000 was made. Two parties got involved and pushed it to T $358,000 before the hammer came down in favour of a young local woman. A former local man, and his partner, took 35 Queens Road, Newtown, a fourbedroom brick house close to the Barwon River. Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant Highton) took an opening offer of $700,000 in front of 35 onlookers and soon brought the hammer down at $760,000 after a two-way contest. The young couple, who have been working overseas, plan to live at the property. In another big result, Brett Walker (Barry Plant Leopold) sold 10 Powell Street, Geelong East, for $704,000. A crowd of 80 saw five parties fight it out for the renovated, four-bedroom character weatherboard. The Melbourne buyers plan to relocate. ●

here’s a touch of Hollywood Hills about this renovated Highton house. A thorough overhaul has made it an alluring mix of modernist and retro. It’s a hard balance to get right, capturing contemporary without forsaking character, but this is the perfect example of how it’s done. And the views, well, they’re pretty impressive, too. A wall of windows at the back of the house takes in the spectacular outlook across the Barwon River to Simonds Stadium and the CBD. This hillside pocket of Highton is in high demand. It’s old Highton, where tree-lined streets with big blocks offer idyllic settings for family life and easy access to the river walking tracks and charming Highton village. Like many of its neighbours, this house doesn’t let its facade reveal the true beauty of what’s behind the front door. The minute you step inside, though, the attention to detail undertaken in this renovation is on show. Beautiful polished floorboards create an easy transition from zone to zone, while timber-panelled ceilings and walls add a raw edge and complement the leafy surrounds. The entrance steps down to a hallway with a wall of northfacing windows to one side and a sliding door to a private deck. At the end of the hallway is an expansive open-plan zone that would be fitting for a Hollywood star. It’s a spectacular space that has the lot – a large living area, meals area, designer kitchen and bifold doors to a big deck. A glass balustrade ensures the views across the river to the city remain uninterrupted. The kitchen has white stone benchtops and white cabinetry, as well as stainless-steel appliances. The oven is on the side bench, with a window splashback providing a panoramic outlook for the cook. The view from the sink is just as captivating. The timber panelling and feature timber pillars add warmth to the area and, as far as indoor-outdoor entertainment goes, it doesn’t get much better than this. The bedrooms are all in the front half of the house, with built-in wardrobes in all three. They have easy access to the bathroom, which has a bath and separate shower. A laundry behind the kitchen has built-in storage and access to the side yard. The backyard is a dream for kids, with plenty of lawn and established trees. The block is 843 square metres, so there’s plenty of room for a further extension if desired. Under the house is a large storeroom, which has the potential to be converted into a playroom. There’s also room for a second outdoor entertainment zone underneath the balcony. There’s a carport with room for two cars, with more parking space in the driveway. Geelong’s CBD is 10 minutes away, while schools and shops are close by. There’s nothing to do but move in and enjoy the lifestyle on offer at this unique property that makes the most of this sought-after location. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

The main living area is part of an open-plan zone, along with the kitchen and meals area. It opens to a paved outdoor area at one end and a covered zone at the other. Central to the home is the formal lounge and dining area, with potential to close off some of this large space for a fourth bedroom. The main bedroom is at the front of the house. It has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite, while the second and third bedrooms have built-in wardrobes. The oversized double garage has a remotecontrol door and internal access, and a double gate to the side of the house provides room for a caravan or boat. Locations don’t get much better, with the Waurn Ponds station a short walk away. The ring road is also close. ● SARAH BIESKE

This immaculately presented split-level brick house would be a pleasure to come home to. Inside has a feel-good sanctuary vibe, with secluded areas, neutral earthy tones and garden views. High ceilings accentuate the elegant entry, where you’ll find the main bedroom, with en suite and walk-in wardrobe, and lounge. The modern kitchen really takes the cake, though. With oodles of cabinetry, an island bench and stainless-steel appliances, meal preparation, entertaining and keeping an eye on children will be a breeze. The landscaped gardens are easy-care so you can spend time with family and friends in the al fresco area and deck. The location, a cul-de-sac in the heart of Leopold, is close to shops and public transport. Other features include a double garage with automatic door and internal and rear access and ducted heating. ● REBECCA THOMPSON

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery.

The Newly Renovated Shell Club Can Cater For All Your Needs Sportsbar, Bistro, New Alfresco Area, Private Functions, Weddings THE SHELL CLUB 76 PURNELL ROAD CORIO PHONE: 5275 4061 WWW.SHELLCLUB.COM.AU

Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.”
