go green Elizabeth Clarke finds out how best to use Pantone’s colour of the year

GLOBE WEST \ TAJ COLLECTION

W

We asked the experts how to make it easy being green.

Paint it green A lick of paint is an effective way to adopt green, be it on a feature wall, door or floor. “Your choice of green can be as subtle or as bold as you wish,” says Kristy Sadlier, co-owner of Norsu Interiors. “Don’t assume it has to be a bright pop of colour. It can be any soft tonal reflection of it, which makes it easier to use.” Team with fellow neutrals such as beige, stone and shades of grey, bright hues such as canary yellow and cobalt blue, as well as soft sorbet pastels, sharp metallics and deep moody shades like plum and cherry red. “Its versatility as a neutral makes it a great feature wall colour,” Rebecca says.

Tip \ We love the cool wall wares at mintinteriordesign.com.au and the affordable art at 20x200.com.

Indoor scenery

URBAN ROAD \ MALACHITE, ILLUSION \ $135

Bring the outside indoors, using potted greenery for a luxe but relaxed vibe. “It is a simple addition and brings natural beauty into a space,” says Kristy. “Try fiddle-leaf figs, hanging string of pearls, chain of hearts or beautiful hoyas, and pair with timbers and neutral pastels.” Tip \ Pot your greenery in beautiful vessels. Take your pick from hanging baskets, plant stands and handcrafted planters from Ivy Muse and Norsu.

hen it comes to tricky-to-use colours, green tops the list. Be it olive, khaki, lime or teal, it isn’t easy being green. Interior designer Lisa Burdus, however, says green should not be underestimated as an interior colour choice. “It is the perfect neutral, adds instant softness to a space and allows other colours, especially vibrant ones, to really shine.” With Greenery named the 2017 Pantone Colour of the Year, expect to see it filter into all areas of your life, including your home. “Green, when applied well, can be a real room changer,” says interior stylist Rebecca Johnson, “and, with the right advice, a cinch to style.”

OZ DESIGN FURNITURE

“It serves as a fantastic backdrop for different coloured objects and accessories and gives them new life.” Tip \ Be inspired by every shade of green imaginable on the Dulux Colour Wall. “We love Dulux Gamelan as a soft, subtle wall colour,” Kristy says.

Wrap a wall Create a high-impact wall using decorative wallpaper in a palette starring green. “Paper a single wall, add a striking mural, or hang a panel of framed wallpaper that sets the scene and creates a mood for the room,” Rebecca says.

“It makes any space instantly glamorous and is a great way to create a focal point.” Tip \ Check out cool wall dots at ponyrider. com.au, and jungle-inspired wallpapers at wallpaperdecor.com.au.

Add art Green-spiked wall hangings, prints and paintings make for an easy and less permanent room update. “Adding art to your home that features green is a simple and effective way to add the colour,” says Ryan Hanrahan, creative director at Page Thirty Three. “I like to use large wall-hanging rugs with lots of texture.”

Pieces with punch Still nervous? Use green with a light hand to punctuate your space. “If unsure, use with restraint or you risk it overwhelming your space,” Rebecca says. “It can be as subtle as a green glass vase or throw cushion, or add one large impactful addition like a floor light, feature chair, bedhead, jungle-print upholstered sofa, or set of green Thonet dining room chairs. It is an easy approach to styling and a simple way to overhaul a space.” Tip \ Check out Elise Cakebread’s beautiful throw cushions, the Audrey Soft shiny chair in acid green from Space Furniture, and paper sculptures from Rachel Castle. SPACE TO MEET & EAT INTEGRATED RATED RA TED DINING & LIVING SP SPAC ACES ARE A KEY TREND, WRITES NICOLE MAYNE

A few years ago, new Australian kitchens featured glossy white finishes with touches of aluminium. These days, the trend is for matte cabinetry and Peter doesn’t see that changing anytime soon. The popularity of darker colours was also highlighted at ICM’s first kitchen, bathroom and interior design trends workshop held recently in Geelong. “As far as products and materials are concerned, everything is still very much a natural look, with matte finishes, timber veneers and pre-finished surfaces,” Peter says.

SET IN STONE Europeans can’t get enough of porcelain on benchtops, Peter says. But he says Australians still prefer reconstituted stone. “We only have a population of about 20 million people, but we use more reconstituted stone than America,” he says. Geelong cabinetmakers have started using more porcelain in the past six to eight months. One of the advantages of porcelain is that it can be used outside in barbecue areas as the stone won’t fade. ●

MATTE & NATURAL FINISHES

“We are also seeing the use of metals. We are doing one at the moment with brass underneath the benchtop.” He says the recent Australian Woodworking Industry Suppliers’ Association exhibition showed off innovations such as ultrasmooth finishes on cupboard doors and drawers. “For example, darker surfaces show fingerprints so there are new products that don’t show them,” he says. ● » icmgeelong.com.au

f you’re looking to design a new house this year, there’s a key trend to be aware of – a mingling of your kitchen and living spaces. Geelong cabinetmakers are increasingly helping clients to come up with innovative ways to maximise the flow between their kitchen, dining and lounge areas. Peter Hammond, a member of Independent Cabinet Makers Geelong and owner of Windsor Kitchens, says the latest technology coming out of Europe is changing the way people think about the hub of their home. “The big thing in Europe is integrating kitchens into living areas,” Peter says. “There are things like an island bench that drops down to table height and becomes a dining table. There’s also a sink with a piece of stone held up in place [level with the bench] and you push a button and it drops down to be a sink.” Such space-saving technologies are perfect for apartments. Peter has already installed these sinks in two Melbourne properties.

COULD YOUR KITCHEN DO WITH A FACELIFT...AT LESS COST?

Traditional timber joinery is enjoying a revival as people look for architectural pieces to lift their houses. In many cases, joinery has become furniture, doing away with the need for freestanding entertainment units or bookshelves. “They don’t just want a box, they want something different. They want one shelf integrated into another shelf,” Peter says. “That is where we are also educating our cabinetmakers about what people are expecting.” ICM Geelong is a collaboration of Geelong cabinetmakers who have joined forces to showcase their skills and quality products. Peter says they have all invested heavily in computer technology and produce custom-designed joinery. “We do everything from flat packs, to architecture work to apartments and $3 million houses in T Torquay,” he says of Windsor Kitchens. ●

ens of iniquity, pits of indemnity, centres of celebration, workers’ respites – however they might have been perceived, Geelong has hosted hundreds of pubs. The count’s not quite clear, but upwards of 300 have traded their wares against teahouses, coffee palaces, railway refreshment bars, Rechabites (dedicated non-drinkers), religious opponents, concerned residents and other competitors. Many of them still stand, but it’s been many years since they tapped their hogsheads or firkins for the thirsty masses. Most, however, only have their facades intact, their interiors having been refashioned into offices, shops, homes, and restaurants. One or two still dispense libations but it’s in vastly different fashion to the original charter. The old Ship Inn on Pako is a French eatery. The Bay View View, or Belle Vue, on Mercer Street is now units. The Dirty Duck out on Boundary Road is a private property, the Haymarket on Moorabool is a B&B, the Harp Inn in West is a Thai restaurant while the White Hart hosts a golf store. The Good Woman, on Little Ryrie and better known as the Caledonian, is a strip joint. 8 DOMAIN GEELONG \ MARCH 9, 2017

The Eureka (1850) was overhauled 20 years ago, then again a few years back. Its pub rock heritage of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s has been superseded by nightclub steel and colour. An array of new watering holes is springing up all around it as Little Malop enjoys an overdue resurrection. The Carlton (1849) was long a highly considered establishment, with its art deco fixtures, dark club timbers, intimate booths and cheering fireplaces and, more recently, its Egyptian affectations. Its bar remains one of the few inner-city oases that still pours beers during the day. It is earmarked for substantial changes, though, with a multistorey office project set to take over its Malop/Clare/Little Malop site. The backstreets Bush Inn (1852) remains the inner-city pub of choice for many, with its slender, often-crowded bar-room, its Ned Kelly paraphernalia and a serious cross-section of regulars from lawyers to bikers, factory workers to city professionals. The Max (1855), remembered by many as the shiftworker’s friend, the early-opener Golden Age, continues to ply its trade on Gheringhap, next to Deakin’s waterfront campus.

It’s a lively pub with popular meals and music but, like many, usually closed during the day. Stories persist of a historic tunnel between its cellar and the waterfront, purportedly to enable illegal alcohol trade. But attempts to corroborate the story resist confirmation. Why dig a tunnel to haul something less 100 metres that you could do under cover of darkness most nights anyway?

A

similar subterranean story is tied to the former Terminus (1854) on Mercer Street. It, too, resists proof, with tales suggesting a masonry wall was built across underground cells once used to accommodate female convicts in chains. The pub, for years a popular strip joint and roughhouse, is now an antiques shop. The late historians Bill Morrow and Ian Wynd wrote that pubs played an important part of life of Geelong, providing refreshment, accommodation and entertainments such as skittles, billiards, musical concerts, dancing. Some were used for inquests, because their counters were handy for laying out cadavers.

Some, like Mack’s, were favourably compared with any hotel in the colonies; others were home to thieves and prostitutes. “The question is often asked as to what was the first and what was the oldest hotel in the town,” the historians wrote. “The first was undoubtedly the Woolpack, later Mack’s, which opened in 1839. It ended its days as a coffee palace and was pulled down in the 1950s. “The Victoria Hotel (1845) has disappeared and the Shearer’s Arms (1847) is no longer a hotel. Three hotels of 1849 still survive – the Petrel in Pakington Street, the Criterion (Jokers) in Ryrie Street and the Nelson in Malop Street. “Of these the Nelson and the Criterion were rebuilt in the 20th century. The Criterion has changed its name; it was formerly the Prince Albert. The Petrel, which appears to be the original building with additions, is on the same site and has the same name.” So that’s that. The Petrel is Geelong’s oldest hotel. And there’s no truth to the rumour you can hire a hitman there with the right whisper in the right ear – although maybe there was a time. ●

THE VINE

Ask the wine guy important is the colour of Q How a wine? I don’t pay much attention to a wine’s A colour. For me, enjoyment comes from its flavours, aromas and the way it

flows through the mouth. It’s a cliche, but you really don’t drink with your eyes. The theory goes that the deeper the colour, the more concentrated the wine. I’ve had plenty of pinots noir as light in colour as rosé with more body than Arnold Schwarzenegger. Rosé’s the one wine where colour gives you an indication of its style – pale pink is usually a dry, savoury style and bright pink rosé is usually more fruity. ● GOT A QUESTION? EMAIL \

De Bortoli La Boheme Act Two Pinot Noir Rosé 2016 (Yarra Valley) $22; 12.7%

Here’s a wine where the sum is greater than its parts. It tastes of neither cabernet nor shiraz and is simply a seamless wine that delights with every sip. Red and blueberry aromas, spice and cedar flavours are bright and fresh. On the winemaking side, there’s a sensitive hand at play. ●

Sourced from vineyards in Gladysdale, Woori Yallock and Coldstream, this is a pretty powerful pinot with a delightfully spicy and woody oak character that’s a neat match for its dark cherry and berry aromas. It is smooth and silky, with weighty flavour and a lick of tannins. ●

This is bone-dry rosé made mostly from pinot noir. It’s so seamless and composed it feels like there’s not much going on here, yet it has everything – from layers of savoury, spicy cherry and Turkish delight flavours to its silky texture and crunchy, refreshing acid. ●

f anyone earned a drink on Saturday afternoon, it was Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong). Joe stood under the harsh sunshine four times across the day, each time ending with a sale. Out at 61 The Esplanade, North Shore, he faced a crowd of 70 in the front yard of the 1848-square-metre property. “Whoever says size doesn’t matter is sadly mistaken,’’ he said. On offer on the huge allotment was a three-bedroom brick house, self-contained bungalow, numerous sheds, stables and an impressive garden. “It’s a picture postcard,’’ the auctioneer said, gesturing towards the gleaming Corio Bay, with its flotilla of sailing boats and visiting cruise ship. A man was quick to offer $800,000 and Joe countered with a vendor bid of $900,000. Three other parties got involved and the mark rose to $1.28 million before the hammer came down. The winner was a Melbourne investor who has plans for development. Joe’s hammer also came down at 68Jedda Street, Bell Post Hill, a twobedroom brick house on 650 square metres. A local first-home buyer took the prize at $350,500, beating off four other parties. At 15 Giddings Street, North Geelong, it was an investor in front when Joe’s hammer fell at $336,000. The two-bedroom weatherboard on 645 square metres was sold after a three-way contest. At 2 McCurdy Road, Herne Hill, Joe’s day under the hot sun ended when he passed in the three-bedroom house on a corner block at $410,000 after a two-horse race. His colleague, Shane King, negotiated a sale soon after for $420,000. The winner was a man who intends to live at the property.

17 SOUTH STREET, BELMONT Also planning to move in were the young couple who came up trumps at 39 Loch Street, East Geelong, a two-bedroom character weatherboard house. Jarrod Leonard (Buxton Geelong East) waited for a bid from among the crowd of 65 as the sun beat down. “At this point, I normally say I’ve got all day,’’ Jarrod said. “But I tell you, it’s really hot out here.’’ He posted a vendor bid of $470,000 and a two-way contest soon developed, the hammer finally coming down after 25 bids in favour of the young couple at $555,000. At 11 Murray Street, Highton, Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant Highton) had his work cut out following the bids as seven parties fought for the classic 1950s three-bedroom brick house. “They don’t build them like this any more,’’ Kieron told the 55 onlookers. Bidding opened at $400,000 and the

keen contest went to $505,000 before the hammer fell in favour of a Melbourne couple who have bought the property as an investment. A big crowd of 75 rocked up outside 37 South Street, Belmont, where Ian Nichols (Barry Plant Highton) invoked the art world as an example of what could happen. “The Mona Lisa was four years in the making,’’ Ian said. “You’ve YYou’ve got a blank canvas here, you can make your own masterpiece in four years, or it may only take one (year).’’ An opening offer of $400,000 rang out for the two-bedroom weatherboard on more than 730 square metres. Three other parties got involved and the mark reached $534,000 before the hammer came down. The winners were a young local couple who have not decided on their plans for the property. ●

HOUSE OF THE WEEK HIGHTON \ 19 HIGHETT ROAD

T

he magic of modern design is subtly fused with timeless style at this sprawling Highton house. It’s indulgently spacious on a 1184-square-metre block, but it’s the layout of the house that truly speaks to buyers in search of a family home. Not only are the living spaces generously sized, there’s also been a lot of thought into where they’re best placed. For instance, the front of the house has a northerly aspect, so it makes sense that the two main living areas capitalise on it, with one either side of the entrance hall. They’re both flooded with natural light. It also makes sense that the large kitchen interacts with the living area as well as the dining area, despite being a big space itself. It’s great when entertaining, but also for keeping an eye on the littlies. While the main living area is a more open space, the formal living area is quite private and features an open fireplace, making it the perfect space for parents to enjoy some peace and quiet. Conveniently, the main bedroom – with walk-in wardrobe and en suite with spa bath – is just off the formal living area, providing easy access to the parents’ retreat. The third living area is upstairs. This is clearly the kids’ domain, given it has bedrooms three and four either side of it, as well as a bathroom. The living space here is perfect for a playroom when the kids are young and would make an ideal study area when they’re older. The smaller bedrooms all have built-in wardrobes, and a study at the front of the house could be as a fifth bedroom if needed. Despite the contemporary floor plan, the house honours classic design, with heritage-inspired colour schemes, polished floorboards in the kitchen and dining area and bay windows with built-in seating in the living areas. The homestead-inspired kitchen has timber benchtops and white cabinetry with abundant preparation space. While the indoor entertainment spaces are more than big enough to accommodate large get-togethers, the dining area also opens to a large covered deck for year-round outdoor entertaining. The deck steps down to a courtyard that extends across to a leafy garden, as well as a huge lawn. This house has storage space covered, a must for any family. As well as all the internal storage – with built-in cupboards in the laundry and a built-in linen cupboard – there’s a storeroom and a workshop in the double garage. The house also has creature comforts such as ducted heating and evaporative cooling throughout. Architecturally designed, this double-storey house offers splendid family living and a sought-after location. It’s within walking distance of Buckley Falls and the Barwon River tracks, a short drive from the ring road and Highton Village, as well as some of Geelong’s most prestigious schools. The CBD is just 12 minutes away. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

Built in the 1920s and packed with period charm, this two-bedroom character house more than lives up to the name of its street. Lemea is pretty as a picture from the front, with double-hung windows and the original sandstone sills, tuckpointing, an ornate chimney and terrazzo tiling. Behind the front door are soaring ceilings and restored open fireplaces. The main bedroom, at the front of the house, has a gorgeous bay window with timber shutters and a fireplace. A long hallway leads to a living area with a fireplace; the nearby dining room has one, too. At the back, the kitchen looks over the low-maintenance backyard. The main bathroom at the end of the hallway is a nod to the house’s early days, with a clawfoot bath and burgundy-and-cream tiles. A single lock-up garage has rear-lane access.
