T
he Geelong and Surf Coast housing markets have started the year strongly, with both regions recording sharp price increases. Geelong had a median asking price for private house sales of $426,333 in February – up 6.9 per cent on February last year. Asking prices for Surf Coast houses also increased, up 3.5 per cent to $698,300. The Geelong unit market is on the rise, too, with February prices up 4.9 per cent (to $299,000) on the same month last year. The number of listings has also increased, reflecting sellers’ rising confidence in the local market. There were 749 new house listings reported for Geelong during February, 191 more than February 2016. New listings for Geelong units also increased in the past year, rising by 20.9 per cent to 52 in February. Low interest rates remain a significant driver for the recent strong performance. Reflecting the positive result for national economic growth in the December quarter announced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Reserve Bank has – predictably – decided to leave official interest rates on hold for March.

BUXTON HIGHTON’S DAVID GRAY SAYS: “Belmont offers great value for buyers, as well as location. Highlights range from the character homes on large blocks to the Barwon River, trendy cafes on High Street, sought-after schools and accessibility to the Surf Coast and CBD.”
Although national economic activity generally remains underwhelming, the likelihood is that rates will remain on hold until mid-year. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

Started out? About seven months ago. I’ve always had a real passion for property, having bought my first rental when I was 21. I’ve always loved the buzz about property and the excitement of the possibilities you can create yourself through property. Best part of my job? The real reward is people trusting you with such an important step in their life – that’s huge for me. It can be such an emotional time for people, so it’s really important to feel what your vendors are feeling, the good and the bad, and just be there to hold their hand. Geelong’s property hot spots? Bell Park and Bell Post Hill. There’s still a lot of growth to come in those suburbs and they’re both so close to the CBD, the waterfront, and the ring road, and offer big blocks with family homes, which are becoming quite scarce. My favourite place? The Village Door on Pakington Street. It has beautiful European cuisine. On days off I like to … enjoy family time – that’s priceless. I love entertaining and catching up with friends and family. ●

A different point of view fast and nimble, drones give a new vantage point of our world, writes noel murphy
I
f you’re listening, you might pick up the whirring of the four rotors as they buzz overhead – but then maybe not. These miniature choppers, spinning and wheeling at speeds up to 200km/h, are the new hawks of the sky. Fast, nimble, sleek and high-tech, their vision is acute, their manoeuvrability is access-all-areas – barring lines, trees and territorial birds – and their potential is still being plumbed. Photographers, helicopters, postal services, even takeaway pizza outlets are re-assessing their business plans with them in mind. Poised above the crashing cascade of Erskine Falls, outside Lorne, a Phantom quadcopter dodges obstacles, nuts out the three-dimensional environment it’s flying in, streams live video, snaps photos and returns to your hand like an obedient trained raptor. Or a trained chainsaw, if you don’t keep careful stock of exactly where those rotors are. The vision the drone provides is high-resolution, and provided you don’t insist on shooting into the sun it’s as clear as you like. But it’s really the up-closeand-personal, the unusual angles and the bird’s-eye view at speed that catch the imagination. Erskine Falls from straight up looks totally different to what the earthbound spectator sees. A white swoosh in a sea of grey-green sticks and ferns, it seems out of place. We put the Phantom through its paces along the Great Ocean Road, seeking out vantage points normally the precinct of birds – cliffs, rivers, bush and beaches. It purred through the job, contending with strong winds effortlessly and, fortunately, avoiding any claims by neighbourhood birds who might see mechanical
newcomers as a threat. At Cumberland River’s rocky redoubt, it captured a picturesque view previously only available to the intrepid or foolhardy climbers or avian adventurers, courtesy of near-impenetrable scrub top and bottom of a vertical stretch of sedimentary stone. Below the nearby Teddy’s Lookout, on the outskirts of Lorne, traffic winds around the debouchment of the St George River where the drone’s seagull vantage presented a view of wattle and water, bush and beach. The power of nature was evident as our Phantom closed in on the eroding cliffs at Anglesea, slowly but surely ceding way to waves, wind and rain. The drone captured Barwon River floodwaters as they roiled and heaved over Buckley Falls at Queens Park, whipping past the old paper mill precinct and towards the confluence with the Moorabool.
Flying high: The old paper mill at Fyansford (main), Geelong library and heritage centre; Aireys Inlet. (NOEL MURPHY)
It looked across the greenery of the city’s Johnstone Park to the new pink-tiled landmark library. It peeped around the lights at Kardinia Park to see inside the stadium below. All of this at the touch of a finger with technology yet to be put to full potential. One thing seemed sure, though. The world’s fascination with social media and selfies might find small, personalised drones the world’s next big thing. Dronies – selfie videos of everything you do – could well take over from where the sporting mad GoPro helmets leave off. Just program it, throw it in the air behind you and jump, dive, ride, run, ski, surf, drive, fly, swim, climb, parachute, party ... And chances are, when you hear that telltale whirring in future, you might start paying closer attention. ● MARCH 16, 2017 \ DOMAIN GEELONG 7

Beamed direct from the US, this bracing docudrama series feels perfectly timed to echo the waves of protest sweeping Trump’s America. Boasting an amazing cast, including Guy Pearce, Rachel Griffiths, Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O’Donnell, the eight-hour epic tracks the battles of the gay rights movement from its infancy in the Stonewall riots of 1969 to its prominence today. Guy gives a terrific performance as Cleve Jones, the San Franciscan LGBTI activist whose book inspired the series. ●

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (PG 13) 133 minutes \ Digital (DVD and Blu-Ray out soon) \ fantasticbeasts.com Long before Harry Potter becomes a thorn in Voldemort’s side, another wizard sets sail for 1920s New York. Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is a mystical naturalist, devoted to tracking down near-extinct fantastic beasts and locking them in his TARDIS-like suitcase. Written by J.K. Rowling, this new franchise-spawning adventure trades in Potter’s cosy schoolroom mysteries to gorge on pulpy spy thrillers, Ghostbusters and Doctor Who. It’s great, family-friendly fun. ●

Useful for anyone who sometimes struggles to live with their imperfections. ●
Real Estate \ In Mind (Domino) realestatetheband.com It’s a good month for fans of American indie, with albums due from The Shins, The Magnetic Fields and (actually Canadian) The New Pornographers. Top of my list is the long-awaited new record from Real Estate. They’re often (somewhat lazily) compared to early R.E.M., but here their sundrenched, lackadaisical and vaguely psychedelic pop owes more to the ’60s Californian sound of bands such as The Byrds. Perfect for a summery afternoon doing nothing in particular. ●

Ask the wine guy I love Japanese food, but don’t like Q sake. Can you recommend a wine match for sushi and sashimi? It’s not strictly traditional to drink A sake with sushi, so you’re in the clear there. Sushi dates back to the Edo
era in the 1600s; it was a street food and would most likely have been eaten with non-alcoholic drinks. A glass of soba-cha – roasted buckwheat kernel tea – was my favourite pairing with a tuna dish in a multicourse kaiseki dinner in Tokyo a few months ago. In between glasses of Champagne, riesling, chardonnay and pinot noir, it was the standout. The restaurant, Ginza Okuda, has two Michelin stars, so who was I to argue? ● GOT A QUESTION EMAIL \

Brundlmayer Kamptaler Terrassen Gruner Veltliner 2015 (Kamptal, Austria) $37; 12.5%
Based in Werribee, Shadowfax gets its pinot noir from the cool Macedon Ranges. It’s beautifully perfumed, with bright strawberry, raspberry and dark cherry aromas on the fruit side and undergrowth and spice adding savoury complexity. Subtle flavour builds delightfully in the mouth and there’s just the right amount of powdery tannin for structure. ●
Only two grapes can be grown in Austria’s Kamptal region – riesling and gruner veltliner, which has a similar body to chardonnay. This is layered and delicate, with stonefruit aromas and a slight vegetal hint. Smooth and creamy, there’s a nice drying grip to the lime and apple flavours on the finish. ●

hile most home-buyers are sold on interiors, it’s only natural that garden designer and writer Michael McCoy and his wife Karen bought their family home in Woodend for love of a tree. The century-old oak tree was, and is, perfection. “It’s the quintessential childhood tree – many’s the time you’d walk past and see these little legs dangling,” the presenter of the ABC’s lush new Dream Gardens series says. “The house itself was pretty dreadful, with aluminium-framed windows and painted a very strange guacamole green. It was moved onsite in the early ’80s and then added to several times, completely senselessly, but I love that. The fact we have to go outside, to walk through the outdoors, to get to our bedroom, suits me very well.” ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au
» Dream Gardens is on ABC TV, Thursdays at 8pm.
TREE The oak tree has been a major presence as long as anyone living around here can remember. Every now and then I say, ‘I can’t cope with this house any longer, there is too much to do’, and the kids go, ‘but what about the tree? You can’t leave the tree.’

DARK WALLS I
f you want a sanctuary far from the madding crowd, consider cocooning yourself in a room with dark walls. They are a haven, according to Haymes colour consultant Wendy Rennie. She says a dark wall “is a future-forward palette that positions the interiors in our home where we want to feel safe and secure”. Here are her tips on working with dark walls.
L I G H T \ Consider the type of light
available in the space. Is there a natural or artificial source? Or is it a mix of both? Use natural light to create contrast and depth; artificial to suggest a soft, dreamlike space.
\ In a bedroom, a complete blackout approach with low contrast will promote rest and a perfect space for sleeping.
B L AC KO U T
P E R I O D H O U S E S \ Using dark colours on the walls of living rooms and picking out the trims and features in lighter colours can work effectively in period houses. Often, this contrast can enhance the shape or style of the room and its proportions. Rooms with higher ceilings can take dark colours really well. F U R N I T U R E \ Furniture and accessories can always be used to add contrast, texture and light to a room with dark walls. D R A M A \ Don’t be scared to commit to a
dark colour as a treatment for the whole room. This works well to add atmosphere and create a dramatic effect. ● mtay@theweeklyreview.com.au

he coffee van failed to show but Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant Highton) didn’t need a caffeine kick as he launched into his opening remarks outside 24 Cara Road, Highton, on Saturday. “The median price in Highton has risen $40,000 in the last couple of months,’’ Kieron told the crowd of 45. “You YYou just need to take a look around.’’ A young man quickly offered a bid for the four-bedroom house with views over the Barwon Valley and towards Geelong, but it was way off the mark. “Thank you for your offer, sir,’’ Kieron said. “But can I get a six ($600,000)? That would be showing the property the respect it deserves.’’ Sure enough, $600,000 it was and the auction was on as an older man immediately placed a counter-bid of $620,000. The two went head-to-head, the older man always quick to respond. At $680,000, it seemed as though the young man would lose out. “He (the older man) is not letting go, and nor should he,’’ the auctioneer said. But the young man kept at it, in discussion with his partner. At $740,000, the property was well and truly on the market. At $760,000 the bids fell to increments of $1000. The older man, who had batted away every challenge in a flash, was just as quick to give up the contest, conceding after the young man reached $765,000. The excited young couple, from Melbourne but with a connection to Highton, plan to live at the property. Kieron is quickly making the neighbourhood his own. Next week he will put up the house opposite – 23 Cara Road – for auction, and also one around the corner at 22 Jinjella Road. Not far away, Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) was making Bell Park his own on
5 FURNER AVENUE, BELL PARK Saturday, starting out at 5 Furner Avenue, a three-bedroom brick house with a four-car garage. “This truly is a great location and it’s only going to get better when Aldi arrives,’’ Joe told the 35 onlookers. The German supermarket chain is building just around the corner in Anakie Road. “There is research from England that having an Aldi in your neighbourhood increases the value of your home by £5000 [$A8066],’’ the auctioneer said. A two-horse race began at $300,000 and reached $350,000. “It’s not a game of tennis,’’ Joe said. “Anyone can join in.’’ But it remained a battle between the two for another six bids before a third party showed interest. Finally, after 28 bids, the hammer came down at $378,500 in favour of an
investor – that same third party, who hails from Melbourne. Joe then made tracks to 33 Deakin Street, just a few blocks away, where a crowd of 45 gathered outside the threebedroom weatherboard house in need of a bit of attention. “If this house doesn’t scream opportunity, then nothing does,’’ Joe said. “It’s a great Bell Parker.’’ Once again $300,000 was the opening gambit and, once again, it was a threeway contest. A young couple made the running but hit $350,000 and couldn’t go any further. Two young men across the road kept T going, and they took the prize when the hammer came down at $357,000. The men, locals, have purchased the property together as a way of breaking into the real estate market. They plan to renovate. ●

Ben Riddle from Buxton Geelong East sold this grand double-storey house, just a stroll from the waterfront and Pakington Street. It offers luxury living, with an exclusive location, high-end finishes and a resort-style pool area out back.
Buxton Highton’s Tony Moorfoot sold this property within weeks for more than the asking price. It had previously been listed with another agent. The house is walking distance to Marshall station and less than a 15-minute drive to Barwon Heads.
Harcourts North Geelong’s Joe Grgic and Shane King teamed up to sell this house at auction. The three-bedroom brick house with parking for six cars has a north-facing backyard and is near the ring road, shops and schools.
16 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ MARCH 16, 2017
HOUSE OF THE WEEK NEWTOWN \ 19 CLARENDON STREET
M
odern, minimalist design engages from start to finish at this inspired townhouse in exclusive Newtown. It’s one of those properties you need to look through a couple of times to take it all in. Initially, it’s the sense of space, walls of windows and remarkable spread of natural light that overwhelm. But the second time around, you also take notice of the designer finishes, such as the polished concrete flooring and floating timber staircase, as well as how effortlessly this double-storey residence flows from zone to zone. Of course, the location certainly adds to its appeal, given it’s just a block from the river end of Pakington Street and a short walk from Simonds Stadium and the CBD. The sophisticated finishes are on show from the minute you arrive, with a push-button magnetic front gate leading to a private, decked, north-facing courtyard, as well as the house’s main entrance. The design of the house has been carefully calculated to make the most of the block, allowing for generous entertainment zones inside and out. There are two indoor living areas, one at the front and one at the back, both leading to outdoor areas. You can just about follow the sun, with the main deck off the open-plan zone enjoying the morning light and the front courtyard taking in the afternoon rays. A designer kitchen is positioned at the back of the house in the open-plan zone. It looks over the main living and dining area, while a double-glazed oversized slider opens the whole zone up to the east-facing deck. The kitchen has Miele appliances, white gloss cabinetry and an extended island with stone benchtop. Everything is built in to create a sleek aesthetic, including a concealed niche for a fridge and an integrated dishwasher. There’s also a built-in low-line TV unit on the other side of the open-plan zone in the living area, ensuring the entire space is packed with subtle yet stylish storage options. This clever use of space is a feature throughout the house. The European laundry, for example, is conveniently placed behind bifold doors off a minor hallway to a powder room. It’s a great use of what would have otherwise simply been wasted space. Upstairs are three bedrooms, including the expansive main. It has a large walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with freestanding bath and walk-in shower. Bedrooms two and three have built-in wardrobes and views across the leafy street below, as well as easy access to the main bathroom. In keeping with the contemporary design of the house, a single lock-up garage is also concealed and has extra storage built in, as well as internal access. The house also has an intercom and a security system. You can just about smell the coffee from Pako’s cafes, which are just a short stroll away, along with the boutique shops that line the popular strip. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

It’s a long way from the front door to the back of this quality Wookey-built house in a quiet pocket of Highton. The space is perfect for a family, and that’s why the current owners are reluctantly downsizing; the kids are leaving the nest. Set on a block of 929 square metres, the house is designed for a family lifestyle. The main bedroom, with en suite, is at the front of the house, while the other three bedrooms are to the rear. There’s lots of living space in between, with the well-appointed kitchen at the hub. Big sliding glass doors lead to outdoor entertainment spaces in the sprawling, manicured, private backyard. This house is close to quality private and state schools and nestled between the Waurn Ponds shopping centre and popular High Street. The house is ripe for a personal touch to set it up for another era of family memories. ● PAUL CHAPPLE
