ew home building in Geelong continues at record pace, with surging migration and a likely flood of first-home buyers to add to demand. The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data reports 3127 house building approvals in the Geelong region in the year to the end of January. That was 14.5 per cent higher, or 397 more, than in the same period in 2016. Geelong accounted for 1555 of the approvals in the 12-month period. The Surf Coast, meanwhile, had 1410. The region’s most popular suburb for house approvals during the year was Grovedale with 723. It was followed by Barwon Heads (488), Torquay (328), Clifton Springs (321) and Lara with (139). Increased building in the region is good news for the local market, providing more choice for buyers – particularly first-home buyers. Recent changes by the state government to the stamp duty payable by first-home buyers, effective from July, will likely also increase activity from this group. ABS data also shows record levels of net

Velvet is making a comeback in homewares as well as fashion. Stores such as Adairs, Freedom and West Elm are all offering velvet cushions and throws, while the velvet lounge is back in jewel tones like sapphire and emerald. RETRO JUNGLE As soon as Pantone announced Greenery as its 2017 colour of the year, social media feeds filled with photos of lush, leafy tones. Rae Maxwell founder of luxe interiors store Barnaby Lane says their most recent campaign (above) embraced the year’s “it” colour by including plenty of indoor plants. “We had a really big focus on greenery.” Anything resembling a banana leaf is particularly popular this year, hence a return to the jungle-inspired decor popular in the ’70s. Add in tan leather, hard-wearing rugs in neutral colours and even a touch of cane
furniture – perhaps a table – to complete the look. ● How to pull the style together \ If, like us, you’re still loving the Scandi trend, the retro jungle look can be built on existing pieces. “We’ve blended the theme of bringing the outdoors in – via the loft-style windows and plants – with the Scandi/Nordic vibe that we love,” Rae says. There’s a whole world of aperitifs A to try. Customarily drunk before a meal to stimulate the appetite, they range

from bitter to sweet, are generally lower in alcohol than spirits and there’s a lot of regionality. Sit in a bar in Alsace, France, and you’ll see people asking for an amer biere, a beer with a shot of orange bitters. In Normandy, it’s pommeau, a blend of cider and calvados that’s matured in oak barrels, served on ice before a meal. Here’s a range of aperitifs you’ll find being served across France. ● GOT A QUESTION EMAIL \

Gentiane is made from the root of the gentiana lutea plant (it has little yellow flowers and huge roots) that grows in France’s Massif Central. It’s DayGlo yellow and smells of candied lemon peel, used coffee grounds and a hint of dust. It is subtly bitter, balanced by a moreish sweet lemon cordial flavour. Serve this \ neat over ice.
Amer is added to beer in a 1:6 ratio in France’s Alsace. Botanicals, including gentiane and quinine, are macerated with citrus (orange in this case), sugar and caramel and matured before release. Neat, it has complex orange rind and spice aromas and a gentle bitterness on the palate. In a beer, it adds a lengthy, subtle orange finish. Serve this \ with a neutral lager, tonic water or neat over ice.

At five years old, this is one of the younger ones you’ll find. It’s filled with woody, spicy apple aromas and a flavour that’s reminiscent of a tarte tatin – apples, caramel and doughy pastry. Serve this \ neat over ice.

Made to be added to beer, it’s delicious on the rocks or as part of a meal; I’ve poured over crepes and ice-cream. It tastes of sweet stewed apples and chestnut puree and adds sweet richness to a beer without losing any refreshment. Serve this \ with a neutral lager or neat over ice.

f the temperature of Geelong’s property market had been taken at 30 McDougall Street, Geelong West, on Saturday, then the thermometer would have exploded. Ben Riddle (Buxton Newtown) knew he had plenty of interest in the renovated four-bedroom weatherboard on a block of 422 square metres, but 10 minutes into the auction his expectations had been blown away. The big crowd of 120 heard an opening bid of $795,000 and offers soon passed $900,000. Ben’s hammer finally fell on the six-way contest at a whopping $973,000. The winners, a local couple, intend to live at the property. Ben then went around the corner to 25 Elizabeth Street, where a crowd of 75 had gathered outside the four-bedroom weatherboard. “The money you pay today is irrelevant,’’ Ben said. “What it will make in five to 10 years is what you need to ask yourself.’’ Bidding opened at $400,000 and three parties pushed the mark to $580,000, the prize going to a local developer. Andy Ingham (Buxton Newtown) was at 25 Knight Avenue, Herne Hill, a threebedroom weatherboard in need of updating. A man offered $350,000 and a bidding frenzy took off in front of a crowd of 70. Buyer’s advocate Tony Slack was prominent, countering bids from four other parties. “This English skin of mine is getting very red,’’ Andy said as he guided the contest. In the end, it came down to a fight between Tony and a man taking shade under a tree. After almost 60 bids, the mark hit $482,500 and the hammer fell with Tony ahead. He was bidding on behalf of a Melbourne investor who intends to eventually relocate. Andy’s day continued at 85 Giddings
30 MCDOUGALL STREET, GEELONG WEST Street, North Geelong, a meticulously maintained three-bedroom brick house. Forty onlookers saw a four-way contest begin at $310,000 and go to $422,000 before the hammer fell in favour of a young local man who plans to live at the property. The northern suburbs have been a hive of activity recently, much of it at the end of the hammer of Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong). Joe began at 45 Thorburn Street, Bell Park, a three-bedroom weatherboard in need of attention. A crowd of 40 saw an opening bid of $260,000 and then a pause. “I’m happy to call it,’’ Joe said. “My face is burning out here.’’ He didn’t, though, as the bids began to flow and the mark reached $318,000 before the hammer fell in favour of a local man who bought the property as an investment. Up the road at 151 Anakie Road, Bell Post Hill, Joe passed in the three-bedroom
brick house at $400,000, but sold it soon after for a higher, undisclosed price to a local woman who plans to live there. Joe’s team also closed a deal post-auction at 46 Bacchus Marsh Road, Corio, where the two-bedroom house was passed in at $240,000. It sold soon after to a Melbourne investor for a higher price. Joe also crossed the river and sold 49 St Albans Street, St Albans Park, under the hammer for $305,000. The four-bedroom brick house went to a local owner-occupier. Ian Nichols (Barry Plant Highton) crossed the river in the opposite direction, putting 28 Osborne Street, North Geelong, up for auction. Ian told the 35 onlookers the threebedroom weatherboard was “1332 steps from the North Geelong railway station’’. A bidder offered $320,000, at which mark the property was passed in. It sold soon after to young, local first-home buyers for $340,000. ●
