ALICIA SCIBERRAS A stylist who’s worked with high-end brands such as Cult Design, Alicia Sciberras has put together an autumnal board that is eclectic and conceptual: “Fauvism meets St Tropez,” she says. Her suggestion for autumn is as timeless as it is seasonal. “When it comes to an autumnal interior, my approach is casual elegance enhanced with rich textures and a notion of colour play,” she says. “I am predicting rich red-rust colours contrasted with lighter pastel pinks, mauve and a pop of ultramarine. Bring out a textural interior landscape with statement furniture from Dimore Studio, small ceramic [raku-style] pieces by Georgia Harvey and upholstery from Raf Simons.” If some of these names have you coming out in a budget-breaking rash, Dimore Studio’s look can be recreated using vintage furniture or by upcycling your current furniture in Dimore’s signature velvets. Raku ceramics (hand-shaped Japanese pottery) can be found on eBay. Or, if you love Georgia Harvey’s work, then make this your investment piece for autumn: an original, handcrafted work of art by a local maker. That’s bound to warm the cockles of your heart. ● » aliciasciberras.com 6 DOMAIN GEELONG \ APRIL 6, 2017

RICHARD MISSO \ THE STYLESMITHS “There’s a definite air of indulgence about this season’s throws, rugs and cushions,” says Richard Misso, creative director at The Stylesmiths. “Plush, strokeable textures seem to be as important as warmth,” he says. Richard compiled a mood board of his favourite Pantone colours and included a plethora of cable knits, including the giant weaves that continue to delight. As for overexposed looks, Richard suggests
carefully storing copper accessories until further notice. “Real metals, but also metallic finishes, are still at large, but avoid copper as it’s had its day; think brass for its aged warm hues, paired with inky moody blues, kale or forest green cushions or throws to make for a perfect cosy setting. “If you feel like breaking it up, add a pop of yellow or terracotta. I dare you.” ● » thestylesmiths.com.au

PAIGE ANDERSON Warmth and texture are the buzzwords for autumn; trend forecasters have long predicted a move towards more tactile surfaces and textiles as an antidote to digitalisation. For stylist and new mother Paige Anderson, this has become a particular priority. “The need to make your home a place of family, love, relaxation and tranquillity is becoming important in our world of overstimulation,” she says. “My antidote is to create an environment full of textures and colours to reflect the rich variety of the natural world. “Welcome warm hues of orange and terracotta then mix them with jewel tones of red, green and fuchsia.” If you’re in the market for new furniture this season, she suggests choosing pieces that
embrace texture such as rattan, weave and roughly hewn timber. “Now more than ever it’s important to connect to the natural world,” she says. Not ready to invest in the bigger items? Patterned rugs can add an eclectic layer. Paige likes the pairing of a patterned rug with a blue velvet sofa, which will enhance any pops of blue in the rug. Another antidote to the speed of modern life can be found in handcrafted pieces. Make like your parents and invest in an heirloom; you can start small with a ceramic or something in hand-painted fabric, then save up for a beautifully crafted table or armchair. ●

record surge of autumn listings has increased competition among sellers and provided buyers with an unprecedented choice of properties in the Geelong market. Geelong recorded an auction clearance rate of 65.9 per cent in March, down on the 70.3 per cent reported in February and also just below the 66.3 per cent in March last year. The lower clearance rate, however, came amid a record number of auctions, with 133 homes listed to go under the hammer in March. This was well ahead of the 97 auctioned in February and also significantly up on the 94 listed in March 2016. The number of Geelong homes auctioned in March set an autumn monthly record. There were 85 homes reported sold at auction, with the previous record of 81 set in November and December last year. Geelong had a median auction price of $525,500 in March. That was down on the $570,000 recorded in February but 16.8 per cent higher than the $450,000 median in March last year. The Surf Coast had a March clearance rate of 68.8 per cent, with 17 listings. his striking beachside house on the Bellarine Peninsula is evidence of the transformative effects of a bold colour treatment. A house that was once on the verge of demolition has been given a cheerful and contemporary update using the bravest of colours schemes, with spectacular results. Kate and Mal Heppell bought their Point Lonsdale house 11 years ago when it was advertised as a “knockdown”. “The house had literally been cut and sealed – ready for demolition,” Kate says. Nevertheless, the quirky building had a special appeal – and unexpected staying power. Kate and Mal never demolished it. Instead, they reversed the pre-demolition works, added two bedrooms and a new bathroom, replaced every window, extended the decks, and clad the exterior in timber. “While the exterior was dilapidated, the interior was actually really beautiful, a sweet layout, with stunning natural light – and a lot worth salvaging,” Kate says. So they did – the interior, particularly upstairs, is virtually original. This intuitive, “mend and make do” approach explains, in part, how Kate and Mal’s house came to be such a rich patchwork of diverse colours, textures and materials. As they added to the modest house, concrete finishes, bold colour and timber details were layered on to the existing framework. The couple also used brilliant, unexpected colour throughout. Rich olive greens, warm orange tones and deep indigo make for vibrant, distinctive spaces; there is barely a white wall in the house. An eclectic edit of second-hand furniture, handcrafted homewares, beautiful art works and vivid soft furnishings from Kate’s homewares brand Kip & Co. complete the look. Kate is passionate about Australian art. “A special piece is the Minnie Pwerle painting in the living room, which Mal and I purchased together about

12 years ago, a couple of years after we met,” she says. Two paintings by Melbourne artist Rhys Lee are also firm favourites. For the Heppell family, the bright, eclectic home showcases their combined creative personalities. “Your house should be somewhere you feel comfortable and inspired,” Kate says. “For me, bold colours bring a vibrant strong energy to the home, and I think they encourage creativity, imagination and play with my kids.” ●

how to Use bold colour ● Bold colours can be transformative when
they are used confidently. Start with a small area such as a bright hue on an internal door. ● Consider how you use a room. Charcoal
grey and indigo create a moody, relaxed atmosphere in lounge rooms and bedrooms. Warm brights such as pinks, corals and yellows create good energy in kitchens and dining areas. ● Experiment in children’s rooms. Be inspired
by their drawings, bed linen and toys. ● Consider the light. Colours with warm
undertones suit sunny spaces; a cool, muted palette works with limited natural light. ● As with any decorating decision, the key

he Surf Coast and Otway regions are gearing up for their annual celebration of local produce with Eat Local Month – a series of 13 gastronomic events spread throughout April. The region’s local food industry is starting to boom, according to Ben Shaw of Basils Farm. He is part of the new wave of food producers involved in Eat Local Month. “The events are about creating an awareness,” he says. “There are so many great producers coming out of our regions, so it’s a chance for people to meet some new producers or restaurants and cafes that are doing good things.” Ben and his team at Basils Farm grow pumpkin, corn, chilli and more for the on-site winery’s cafe, and also supply heirloom tomatoes to Little Green Corner cafe in Geelong. His interest in produce flourished after starting his own backyard garden when he moved to Geelong from Melbourne a decade ago. After becoming involved in local community gardens and doing a course in permaculture, Ben became the sales manager at Basils Farm winery and saw the opportunity to start a vegie garden.
EAT LOCAL DINNER
home grown Brendan bale gets a taste of eat local month “That was two days a week, four years ago,” Ben says. “Now we have a few gardeners and we’ve expanded into a large kitchen garden plus orchards and berries. It’s just taken off.” Now in its third year, Eat Local Month has grown from a small collection of community events to a multifaceted festival that includes talks, fine dining and markets.
Ben thinks it has huge potential to expand further. “People are getting a lot more conscious about where their food is coming from, and they want to support people that are doing what we’re doing.” While Ben is pleased to see a growing interest in locally sourced produce, not everyone is on to the local food train yet.
COULD YOUR KITCHEN DO WITH A FACELIFT...AT LESS COST?
“It’s still a niche thing to eat locally, as most people shop at the big supermarkets,” he says. “It’s about letting people know there is an alternative.” Ben and some of his fellow farmers will provide that alternative at The New Breed, an event showcasing the produce of some of the region’s best growers. Oliver Benson from Ravens Creek Farm, Bridie Cotter and Tom Gaunt from Kinsfolk Farm and Hugh Whitehead from host venue Little Green Corner will also be there to share their secrets about growing and selling sustainable food. “We’ve all come from a non-traditional farming background,” Ben says. “We all went to uni, studied commerce and did all sorts of things; yet we’ve ended up in the food industry.” He hopes to continue sharing his fresh perspective on farming, which has a strong focus on sustainability and nourishing the community. “Food brings people together. We do eat three times a day, so if we can eat food that’s grown locally, why wouldn’t we?” ● bbale@theweeklyreview.com.au » eatlocalmonth.com.au

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (PG) 133 mins \ DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital (Disney) starwars.com Set in the weeks before the 1977 original, the latest entry in the Star Wars canon abandons its sword-and-sorcery roots for bleak wartime sci-fi. This pays off in action sequences where the stakes are unusually vivid, but risks losing the knockabout charisma of the other films. For all its pushing into new territory, it’s the most nostalgic elements that truly deliver. The new characters (excepting Ben Mendelsohn’s Ocker baddie) fade away as soon as Darth Vader appears. ●
The Night Manager \ SBS Wednesdays, 9.30pm. sbs.com.au Having made its debut on cable last year, this John le Carre thriller has finally trickled down to free-to-air. It’s a genuine treat, fusing brainy intrigue with the exotic glamour of the best Bond films. Tom Hiddleston’s Jonathan is recruited by the British secret service and sent after billionaire Richard Roper, who is thought to be at the centre of a black market arms trade. Tom’s Teflon charms are very 007, but the real star is Broadchurch’s Olivia Colman as his rumpled handler. It also stars Melbourne’s own Elizabeth Debicki. ●
The Unmourned \ By Meg and Tom Keneally » $32.99 (Penguin) penguin.com.au Hugh Monsarrat is an ex-convict, now working as a clerk for the governor in colonial NSW. Along with his housekeeper Mrs Mulrooney, he is called upon to solve the occasional gruesome murder. Their latest case involves the death of the manager of the Female Factory (essentially a workhouse for women convicts), a man known to take salacious advantage of his charges. Written by a Booker Prize-winner and his daughter, this is a rollicking historical murder mystery, delivered with wry wit. ●
Jarvis Cocker and Chilly Gonzales \ Room 29 (Deutsche Grammophon) jarviscocker.net Former Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker has always had a gift for storytelling, his most famous lyrics fusing the economy of Raymond Carver, the debauchery of Serge Gainsbourg and the wry wit of Alan Bennett. His latest project, with Canadian performer Chilly Gonzales, puts the past crimes and anecdotes relating to a famed Los Angeles hotel against minimalist piano. Jarvis drifts and whispers his tales like a particularly salacious ghost. Few rockers have managed to age this gracefully without blunting their edge. ●

(VISIONS OF VICTORIA)
I
was surprised the other night to find a tightrope walker practising his tricks along the beachfront at Torquay. Jumping onto the rope, bouncing on his butt, his stomach, twisting and turning like a trampolining dervish, occasionally even walking on the thing. The bloke hooked up his gear between two trees, about a metre off the ground. As gobsmacked as I was, joggers, strollers and other passers-by seemed strangely unimpressed by his antics. It seems he’s a regular. Like the personal trainers and bootcamp torturers you’ll find there. That’s not the only unusual thing along the waterfront in Torquay, though. The old summer resort littoral has curious offerings for folks of all seasons. Scratch about a little and you’ll find a few surprises alongside the Norfolk pines and angular cypresses. Arthur Leonard Long for one. He’s remembered in stone for making the first flight across Bass Strait to mainland Australia, landing at Torquay in December 1919.
“Scratch about a little and you’ll find a few surprises alongside the norfolk pines and angular cypresses” A figurehead from the 1902 wreck of the Inverlochy that went walkabouts in the 1950s is now marked by an abstract timber sculpture from a beachfront cypress. The Joseph H. Scammell, which ran aground off Point Danger in 1891, is recalled by a thumping great anchor and photos from the time. It was just one of numerous ships that came to grief along the south-west coast. While no lives were lost on the Scammell, subsequent looting was shocking; the vast majority of the cargo was reportedly buried
in local backyards, paddocks and sand dunes. The skipper copped it in the neck for careless navigation and negligence, and he’d invested his own savings in the ship. Beachcombers, dog-owners, mums and bubs, cafe addicts, surfers and windsurfers, paddleboarders, swimmers, joggers, walkers and recovering footballers are among the local tribesfolk you’ll find when the foreshore’s not flooded with tourists. It’s surprising how many of them work in Geelong. It’s much the same next door in Jan Juc.
The things you see are treasures. Pink sky above the horizon of a winter’s evening, blazing full-moon discs reflecting off the water at night, magnificent thunderheads rolling in when the millibars drop, hazy sea mists encroaching late in the afternoon as the quicksilver plunges. In the morning you might find mountains of kelp washed up, or wooden groynes that were there yesterday buried under sand, cuttlefish galore as if massacred overnight, shivering tourists snapping photos of Cosy Corner while scoffing tea and cake. It’s funny how Torquay locals seem to embrace the cold. It might be 10 degrees in the sun, but they’ll lap up the dripping moonahs and icy grass slopes. They’ll breakfast al fresco and they’ll break out the shorts. The big thing about Torquay, however, is everyone seems to want it to retain its village charm. It’s a bit like King Canute; progress is inevitable. But you have to admire the tenacity of the local pushback. Like the inventive Mars Attacks! artistic protest that a high-rise commercial proposal for the town drew a couple of years back. Giant alien craft blasted a model of the shopping centre with green death rays. I haven’t seen any new monstrosities there lately, I’m guessing it worked. ●

OUTDOORS \ THE LATEST LOOKS & HOW TO GET THEM
CO MPI L E D BY MI R A N DA TAY
Y E A R- RO U N D CO CO O N I N G Soft interiors are extending to our outdoor living areas, with more comfort in seating and “cocooning” options that use layering and texture – according to furniture retailer Globe West, which has an extensive outdoor collection. Spending time outdoors is no longer limited to the summer months, either, as we put more emphasis and thought into creating cosy outdoor retreats to enjoy the cooler months. ●
How to pull the style together \ There’s unlimited design potential for outdoor spaces. Choose a soft and comfortable modular outdoor sofa. Look for premium sun-proof fabrics and durable, quick-dry foams. Essential elements \ + Textural interest through a mix of materials and colours; + Flooring is really important to create continuity; + Warm neutrals are calming to the eye and often easier to live with.
(GLOBE WEST)
Evolution \ This trend is influenced by architecture and changing lifestyles. Outdoor spaces are protected for autumn and winter and have integrated fireplaces. As life speeds up and we lead hyper-connected lives, having a sense of comfort and escapism in our own homes has never been so important.

(PHILLIP WITHERS LANDSCAPE DESIGN)
A C T I V E S PA C E S The garden will increasingly be an activated space, becoming a cross-purpose zone for the entire family, says landscape designer Phillip Withers. This trend is not about al fresco entertainment; it’s about really bringing the outdoors to life as a fully immersive space to eat, graze and engage with nature. Children can play, pets can roam, and adults can forage for flowers or pick herbs. ● Evolution \ As we turn to more organic and sustainable lifestyles, the environment increasingly embodies ideas of renewal and connectivity.
Artist impression
THE WILD LOOK How to pull the style together \ Start with the family. Install a trampoline, or simply let your child swing off a tree. Essential elements \ + Meandering paths and immersive spaces. + Areas of respite surrounded by plants. Best tip \ To activate a space, you have to get the plants and atmosphere right. Phillip recommends using a biodiverse palette. » phillipwithers.com
Go wild. According to landscape architect Jim Fogarty, the perennial plantings trend is increasingly popular as an antithesis to another current craze, “lawn porn”. The idea of the wild look “is to try to make your garden beds look meadowy, romantic, unplanned; to control your garden to make it look uncontrolled”. ● Evolution \ The origin goes back to Dutch designers, and Americans such as James van Sweden also did it well. The current global popularity stems from designers such as Piet Oudolf.
How to pull the style together \ More relevant here is a similar approach using Australian natives to get a more natural feel with planting. Essential elements \ + Grasses to pull the look together. + Keep hard structures, such as paving and retaining walls, simple and understated. Best Tip \ Choose a basic grouping of plants and repeat. » jimfogartydesign.com.au

as that an April Fools’ Day joke, sir?” Tony T Moorfoot (Buxton Highton) asked the opening bidder at 9Finningley Court, Highton, on Saturday. A man had shouted out an offer of $500,000 for the four-bedroom brick house on almost 930 square metres. Things soon got serious as three other parties from the 30 onlookers made their intentions clear and strong bidding pushed the mark to $630,000. Tony quickly moved things along with a vendor bid of $650,000. At $680,000, one of the bidders reduced the increments to $2000. “You’re YYou’re making me do it the hard way,” the auctioneer said. When the mark reached $690,000 it was all over, Tony bringing the hammer down in favour of a couple from Grovedale who intend to move to the property. In Belmont,, at 111 Mount Pleasant Road, Dave Gray (Buxton Highton) didn’t have to wait long for an opening offer of $400,000 for the three-bedroom weatherboard. “You YYou can come in and put your own stamp on it,” he told the crowd of 45. The auction turned into a two-way contest between two young couples, the hammer finally falling at $485,000. The new owners, a young local family, have bought the property as an investment. Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) was in a storytelling mood at 28 Chaucer Street, Hamlyn Heights, a substantial, fourbedroom, well-maintained brick house. The auctioneer told the 40 onlookers that the vendors had wanted to buy the former display house when they were newlyweds, but couldn’t afford it. The house had several owners over the years, all of whom found the fouryear mark hard to pass. Eventually those
111 MOUNT PLEASANT ROAD, BELMONT aforementioned newlyweds finally got their dream home, Joe said. Now, many years later, it was time for them to downsize. “For those who have been looking for a long time, now it’s time to break your own house-hunting curse,’’ Joe said, before posting a vendor bid of $420,000. A four-way battle followed, going all the way to $576,500 before the hammer fell in favour of local buyers. On Sunday, Ben Riddle (Buxton Newtown) faced a crowd of 90 outside 53 Sharp Street, Newtown, a three-bedroom brick house on about 760 square metres. A hopeful bidder got things going at $700,000 but four other parties soon left him behind as the mark rose. At $840,000, Ben said the property was “well and truly on the market’’. It eventually turned into a two-way contest. After 28 bids, Ben brought the
hammer down at $965,000 in favour of a young local family. On Saturday, Ben and his team closed a deal post-auction at 2/77 Albert Street, Geelong West, a stylish two-bedroom townhouse close to Pakington Street. Three parties in the crowd of 30 pushed the mark to $480,000, at which point the property was passed in. It sold soon after to a local investor for $492,000. A big Sunday crowd of more than 100 turned out to see Bryan Hayden (Hayden Torquay) auction 200 Bones Road, Bells Beach, a four-bedroom house on about 35 hectares with spectacular ocean views. “This is fairly precious land in relation to the surfing community,’’ Bryan said, before taking an opening offer of $3.3 million. Two other parties had a nibble before the T property was passed in at $4.1 million and negotiations began. ●

nner-city living in Geelong has so much to offer, this part of town especially so. The best of Geelong is at its doorstep – the waterfront, river walking tracks, the botanic gardens, CBD and Simonds Stadium are all within walking distance. The character houses that line the streets are another drawcard; some are renovated, others are waiting for their moment to shine anew. Every once in a while a new characterinspired house will find its way onto the market, providing the perfect fusion of classic beauty and contemporary design while embracing one of the biggest priorities of modern living – a lowmaintenance, luxury lifestyle. These properties are few and far between, but if quality, style and location are at the top of your search list, this three-bedroom townhouse is as good as anything you’ll find. The bungalowinspired weatherboard facade impresses, in part because it remains sympathetic to its heritage surrounds. Inside, however, is a brilliant display of contemporary design with quality finishes to match. The ground floor is dedicated to living, with an expansive openplan zone filled with natural light. The living area is at the front, opening to a decked courtyard with a northerly aspect. A floating TV unit in the living area emphasises a focus on maximising space and sleek, clean lines that are evident throughout the house. The nearby dining area opens to a second deck and lawn area and enjoys the afternoon sun. It’s a great space for indooroutdoor entertaining. The kitchen looks as though it has jumped out of the pages of a home magazine, with white subway tiles as the splashback, white stone benchtops, a feature black Franke sink and a black Smeg cooker. There’s a matching Franke sink in the spacious butler’s pantry, along with extra benchspace and plenty of storage. The three bedrooms are all upstairs and are generously sized. The main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with shower. The other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and easy access to the main bathroom with freestanding bath. Both the en suite and bathroom are tiled from floor to ceiling. There’s also a handy study area upstairs with a built-in desk. Storage options are aplenty, with cupboards in the laundry and a linen cupboard just off the dining area. There’s a convenient powder room downstairs for guests. The house also has high ceilings throughout, and split-system cooling and ducted heating. A single garage opens to the backyard, with room for a second car in the driveway. From here, residents can walk to the nearby boutique Garden Street shops and cafes for brunch while the South Geelong train station is just blocks away, making commuting a breeze. Imagine travelling to Melbourne without having to take the car out of the garage – that’s a pretty enticing thought. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO
Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs.
12337214-DJ04-17
STEAMRAIL VICTORIA
“My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says.
Presents our Steam Shuttles around the Suburbs on Sunday 9th April 2017
A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses.
Come & join us as we Explore the Melbourne suburbs. Departing from Flinders Street station at 9.35am, 10.26am, 11.20am, 1.55pm, 2.50pm and 3.40pm.
One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me.
All trains will depart from Flinders Street Station and will return to Flinders Street Station.
“Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.”
Treat the whole family to a heritage steam train trip.
