Started out \ In 2010. I trained to be an officer in the merchant navy. But I met my partner just before I was about to go to sea, so I had a bit of a life change and went into real estate instead. Best part of the job \ Getting out and meeting people. I love the interaction and being able to help people with such a big decision and offering advice. Geelong’s eelong’s property hot spot \ Bell Post Hill. It’s showing signs that it’s following on from Hamlyn Heights and Herne Hill and doing what those suburbs were doing two to three years ago. Melbourne buyers like that side of town as it’s close to the ring road, offers big blocks, affordable prices and is still really close to the Geelong CBD. My favourite place \ The Barwon River, whether it’s going for a walk or a ride. It’s a beautiful spot and you can start anywhere really and go as long or as little as you like. On days off I like to … whether I like it or not, at the moment I’m renovating, so on days off I either have a paint brush or a hammer in my hand.

eelong house rents have steadied in the first months of 2017, providing some positive news for renters as unit rents continue to rise. The latest Domain data shows that the median asking weekly rent for a Geelong house remained at $350 in the March quarter – the same as recorded for the three months to the end of December 2016. Despite remaining flat in the past quarter, house rents have nonetheless increased by 2.9 per cent in the past year. Although house rents in Geelong have steadied this year, unit rents are on the increase. The median asking weekly rent for a unit rose 3.7 per cent in the March quarter to $280 – the same increase as recorded in the past year. Surf Coast weekly asking house rents rose sharply in the March quarter, up 4.3 per cent to a record high $480. They have surged 6.7 per cent in the past year. Asking rents for Surf Coast units, however, eased by 7.5 per cent in the three-month period, to $370 a week. Advertised house rental vacancies for Geelong fell by 6.5 per cent in the March

THE FINAL VERDICT

WHAT’S IN \ Warm colours, natural stone, cacti, curved furniture, wicker, cordless lamps, black kitchens, portable lighting.
THE MILAN FURNITURE FAIR
(JAIME HAYON_FRITZ HANSEN)
I
f you follow any interior designers on Instagram, you’ll no doubt have noticed photos from the Milan Furniture Fair (Salone del Mobile Milano) dominating your feed in recent weeks. The annual event, which took place from from April 4-9, is in its 56th year. It lures the biggest industry names from around the globe for the largest trade event of its kind. Interior designer Lauren Li of Sisällä Interior Design attended this year’s fair to see what’s next in the ever-changing world of home design. She has curated the highlights from multiple exhibitions to find out what suits our homes in Australia. Keep an eye out for the following looks set to hit the Australian market in 2018.
BATHROOMS The move towards colour continues in bathrooms – not only in tiles, but also basins and toilets. “We saw colours such as soft plum, dusty blue, dark green, beige, brown and charcoal by Cielo,” Lauren says. Such colours help a basin blend into a dark and moody bathroom, without the contrast of the usual white. “If budget is no problem, then a bath cut entirely out of a slab of brown or black stone, as seen at Boffi and Agape, is a knockout,” Lauren says.
KITCHENS Marble continues to be favoured for kitchens. However, the look is decidedly more discreet, with little Carrara on show this year. “Instead, we saw green and brown marble,” Lauren says. “Gone is the 40- or 60-millimetre-thick stone bench. Marble benchtops were as thin as possible, often using a shark-nose profile to appear to float over the cabinets. Sometimes the edge wasn’t visible at all, with the bench sunken into the cabinetry.” Another popular trend is the all-black
design directions
kitchen, which offers a contemporary and sophisticated look, especially when mixed in with plants. “Black is the new white … black was used in metal, painted wood and stone – even the kitchen sink is black,” Lauren says. The trend of concealing storage and tableware was reversed this season, with plenty of freestanding cabinets with glass doors and open shelf racks for showing off crockery. However, appliances such as fridges, dishwashers and stovetops are increasingly hidden elements. “Cooktops are truly integrated into the kitchen, with the gas element and knobs placed on the stone top without the stainless steel or glass plate at all,” Lauren says.
HOMEWARES & STYLING “On the topic of styling, it is ‘more is more’ at the moment. However, an edited selection goes a long way,” Lauren says. Popular styles and materials in homewares include terrazzo, velvet, ottomans and side tables, lamps, brass objects, handmade glazed ceramics, mouth-blown coloured vases, and wooden vases. Indoor plants have been in our homes for
a while now, and there was no hint of this changing anytime soon. “If you can’t commit to keeping a plant alive, then a single tree branch in a vase or a few large tree branches in a basket add a dose of life and greenery to the space,” Lauren says. When it comes to decorative art, Lauren says it’s time to think outside the box. Textile wall hangings remain a strong trend, especially with a modern take. “Studio Toogood designed wall quilts using a combination of sewn-on fabric pieces and painted-on colour to create organic shapes and markings,” Lauren says.
(SOLID STONE BATH BT AGAPE)
Wallpaper in living spaces is back and here to stay. “The key trends are either geometric or organic. Geometric designs take cues from the Memphis style, with dashes and stripes, like the Weft Collection at Texturae, (which are similar to Greg Natale for Porter’s Paints),” Lauren says. Organic styles had soft and watercolour markings, or paint splotches. “These tend to be easier to live with, as they form a softer backdrop than bold geometric designs. Stay away from floral or damask designs,” Lauren says.
WHAT’S OUT \ Florals, damask, polished glossy stone, white kitchens and bathrooms, copper and rose-gold finishes, minimalism, shiny high-gloss finishes. WHAT’S NEXT \ Suede, more designers collaborating with mass-produced furniture brands, Asian-inspired design, red accents.
FURNITURE The trend in couches is towards comfort, with with many low, curved, and plump shapes. Many designers are also using fringing on furniture for a luxurious look with an edge. “Referencing 1950s glamour, long fringing was used as a skirt on marble coffee tables and also running along the bottom of a red velvet sofa at Editions,” Lauren says. She suggests introducing fringing with a few cushions for a quick update. ●

An abundance of warm and earthy colours were on display at this year’s fair, replacing the more minimal palette of previous seasons. “Tones of sienna, tan, terracotta, through to stronger rust and russet, were used all over on walls in rooms, as well as furniture and accent decor objects,” Lauren says. Popular accent colours on show were black forest, emerald green and watermelon red. “[Watermelon red] was seen all over Milan, including at the Dimore Gallery space, which was perhaps the most Instagrammed part of the fair,” Lauren says.

wEAVING A TALE C
rossing the hotel foyer, Hugo Weaving cuts an imposing figure. He’s taller than I’m expecting and fabulously hirsute, with the sort of dominating broad chest and shoulders you expect from heroes of the silver screen. It strikes me as odd, then, that he’s more typically cast as the bad guy (see The Matrix, Captain America and Transformers franchises) or broken men. Take Alex, his new role in hit ABC drama Seven Types of Ambiguity (which also stars Geelong’s own Sophia Katos). He’s a psychologist who has dangerously blurred his professional responsibilities towards his patient, Xavier Samuel’s Simon. “He’s a very attractive, human character because of that,” Hugo says over a glass of red in the hotel bar. “Messy. You want to go see Alex if you’ve got a problem, but you might not want to be Alex.” Indeed, Alex’s life is falling apart as his wife files for divorce. There’s an extraordinary moment in the second episode, when Alex confronts her for an explanation and we see his heartbreak in silence. It’s 10 seconds of the most powerful acting you’ll see this year, and a stark reminder (if one were needed) of Hugo’s talent. Taking in heartbreak, child abduction and infidelity, Seven Types has an all-pervading air of gloom. Does it take its toll, working inside such a bleak world view?
“Yes, it does, but ultimately that’s the job,” says Hugo. “If you’re a reporter reporting on what’s happening in Aleppo, in order to tell that story to the world, you need to be there. As an actor, all these things about human nature and the world might be revealed to you, and they might be hideous, but the rewards are to do with illuminating human behaviour.” He’s quick to point out that actors are rarely putting their lives on the line. And, unlike many of his characters, the 57-year-old has enjoyed what seems an enviously stable home life since meeting his girlfriend Katrina Greenwood in 1984. Balance is key, he says. While creatives are famously prone to put their art above all else, Hugo has long imposed a “loose” limit on himself of no more than three projects a year. When his kids Harry and Holly were growing up, he also turned down gigs that might have interfered with family summer holidays. That must have cost him a few juicy parts over the years, I suggest. He shrugs. “Probably, yeah, but that’s all right. The film industry puts a lot of pressure on families, probably more on crews than actors. The need to maintain the career means you’re away a lot more than you’re home. “If I can do a play, a film and another thing, that’s pretty much all I can cope with. It means I’ve got time

Seven Types is his first major television work in 20 years. His willingness to return to the small screen could be seen to reflect TV’s changed fortunes, as Hollywood talent switches to long-form storytelling. But Hugo says it’s more to do with chasing interesting work closer to home. “I’m not a North Korean actor, I’m not saying I will only do North Korean things, but I absolutely will champion Australian culture. I desperately want to work here more, whether it’s film or TV. There’s a million stories to tell.” Hugo was a latecomer to Aussie culture. Born in Nigeria to English parents, his family settled here when he was 16. By then, he had already been bitten by the acting bug, after seeing Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet as a nine-year-old. “That led me to playing dress-up games as Romeo and Mercutio with my friends. It was probably all about kissing girls and having sword fights.” There’s a distinct lack of kissing and swordplay in Seven Types, but it’s still been applauded by critics and viewers alike. Its success is a stinging rebuke to the idea that Aussie audiences would rather watch something imported. Not that Hugo is surprised. “Sit someone down to watch a great Australian TV series and they’ll dig it. Most people love looking in the mirror. I think it’s an entirely natural thing to go, ‘oh s--t, is that who I am?’”● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au
between projects to be at home, to grow vegetables, plant trees, and see my friends and family.” Aside from a fine body of work, which began with the 1984 mini-series Bodyline and includes Hollywood blockbusters such as Lord of the Rings and The Matrix, Hugo’s most important contribution to Australian culture may yet end up being a genetic one. His son Harry Greenwood (he uses his mother’s surname for his
“i’ve got time between projects to be at home … plant trees & see friends” nom-de-theatre) is building an impressive screen career and, along with cousin Samara of Home and Away fame, looks set to establish a Weaving acting dynasty. Hugo says he was working on The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert when then-four-year-old Harry first displayed a theatrical bent. “When we were shooting at Broken Hill, his mother and I went out to dinner and Harry was asleep. We came back and he was lip-synching in the mirror. He’d obviously seen me practising my lip-synch and listening to the song.” Like his dad, Harry has a nose for important Australian stories; he had a major role in 2015’s Gallipoli miniseries. Telling such stories is clearly important to Hugo. Ask him about Aussie cultural cringe and his easy manner gives way to near-apoplexy.

MY VIEW NOEL MURPHY STUMPS UP
coached and captained by Geelong’s Tom Wills, the same man who came up with Australian rules football. The team surprised the daylights out of Britain’s toffee-nosed cricketing aristocrats. They smacked them all over the shop, then put on corroborees, whipcracking tricks, close-up stunts belting away cricket balls thrown en masse, somersaults, tumbled backflips and threw demos with their spears and boomerangs. Johnny Mullagh, Unaarrimin, was the star of the team, carting the Poms all over the place. Tom Wills’ role is remarkable because his father had been killed in the largest massacre of whites by Aborigines, five years earlier. Tom had grown up with Aborigines and his 1866 job leading the team around Victoria and NSW, while a natural exercise for him, was often controversial to many colonials, who saw Aborigines as savages. Tom was widely considered the best cricketer of his time, but he’s not Geelong’s only claim to fame from the era. When Australia’s first Test team played England at the MCG in 1877, it included batsman Bransby Beauchamp Cooper, a cousin of the great W.G. Grace. He’d migrated to the Antipodes in 1869. Bransby, a gentleman, eschewed anything

ell, that came and went pretty quickly. One minute we were listening to the thwack of leather on willow resounding in the nets, suddenly we’re putting the flannels into mothballs and ruminating on whether the Cats will make the finals in September. No more cricket widows bemoaning, or celebrating, their impending weekend losses as dads and kids limber up their batting shoulders, throwing arms, spin digits and pace- and swing-bowling skills. It’s football again and cricket’s been consigned to next season. What’s prompted all this nostalgia for the cricket season is a book called Boomerang and Bat that arrived on my doorstep. It’s a kids’ book put together in memory of a bloke called Bripumyarrimin. He was a mighty cricketer in his day. He was buried in Britain long ago, after succumbing to tuberculosis while on the famous Aboriginal cricket tour of 1868. Also known as King Cole, Bripumyarrimin was one of an extraordinary team initially
resembling hard work. He refused to practise, deeming it a form of slavery, and demanded professional cricketers do the hard work of bowling and fielding. Oddly enough, he didn’t mind wicketkeeping. Well-credentialled after playing with Grace’s teams in the 1860s in Britain, Bransby later beat them while playing for Victoria, with a personal knock of 84. Playing at South Melbourne in the 1870s, he drew such a large crowd that visiting tightrope sensation Charles Blondin said Melbourne “had gone mad with cricket”. Bransby worked at Queenscliff as a customs officer, dying in 1914 (he’s buried at Eastern Cemetery in plot CEO/6/48, if you’re curious). I’ve also been poring over another book, Parachutist at Fine Leg Leg, by Geelong scion and cricket encyclopedia Gideon Haigh. It’s a
veritable treasure chest of weird cricket tales. Like Sid Barnes’ 1948 jab at an umpire when a dog ran onto the field after an unsuccessful appeal: “Now all you want is a white stick.” There’s also South Africa’s 1995 exit from the field in Sydney after Pat Symcox was pelted with golf balls, fruit and a stuffed barbecue chicken. Or the sparrow killed by Indian bowler Jahangir Khan at Lord’s in 1936. It landed against the wicket, without dislodging the bails. You can probably see why I’m starting to miss the cricket season. It’s not just the game. But my favourite yarn has to be Murrumgunerrimin, also known as Tarpot, from that Aboriginal team that toured Britain way back when. He could run 100 yards backwards in 14 seconds. Like Dennis Lillee in reverse. ●

hat’s new, pussycat? A space in our abode dedicated to the pet, that’s what. With Fido and Kitty as cherished members of the family, we’re giving more thought to how to make them feel right at home. Kmart has the goods – and the tips. ●
1 \ Pets, like we humans, need their quiet time. Set aside a spot in your house just for them. Provide them with a comfy bed and keep their toys tidy in a basket nearby. When your pet wants to relax, they will have their own space for peace and quiet.
2 \ Most cats love to hide in small spaces. A cat cave is an ideal place for your furry friend. Pop their scratching post nearby so they can have a lovely stretch when they wake. A corner spot will do the trick.

3 \ Keep your house organised. Pets love chewing on shoes and clothes so make sure you keep them out of reach and their toys nearby. Always be mindful of keeping hazardous materials safely locked away.
4 \ Use food storage and treat jars to store your pet food to keep the space tidy and treats fresh. 5 \ A wall-mount holder is ideal for hanging multiple dog leashes and grab-and-go items. Have this by the front door so you never forget key items such as poo bags when you and your pooch go walkies. ●

ong one of Melbourne’s most popular and respected TV presenters, Jo Hall is now beaming cross-country as one of the key faces of Channel 9’s new regional bulletins, but she’ll always come home to Hawthorn. “I have pretty much spent my whole life here,” says the media star. “My children went to the same primary school I went to, and every day I took them there I drove past the house I was born in. “At one time I thought we needed more space, so we sold up and moved to a beautiful home in Donvale. “We loved the house, but we were desperately unhappy away from our ’hood, so after just 18 months we ended up moving back.”
Since buying her picturesque but tiny freestanding Victorian cottage in Hawthorn a decade ago, Jo has renovated extensively, adding a lounge and bedroom upstairs and converting the office/studio into a teen retreat with en suite. “Moving [away] was an expensive experiment, but I don’t regret it because we learnt what was actually important to us and, as a busy family, location was absolutely everything.” ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

JO & WILLOW
(MICHAEL RAYNER)
This is one of my most precious pieces of jewellery. My youngest son, Fynn, saved up his pocket money to buy me this ring and had it engraved ‘‘I love you’’. He was only 14 or 15 at the time and it comes from Tiffany’s which, of course, I love because of Audrey.
AWA R D In 1990, I was the first woman to win a Thorn-EMI award for journalism, for covering the Manresa Kindergarten siege. This man took four children hostage, held them in a toilet and doused the floor with petrol. The siege went on for eight hours. All these heavies – like Peter Harvey and Mark Burrows, who had been dodging bullets in Romania – were nominated and when I won I couldn’t believe it.
PUPPIES Nero, our 14-year-old miniature Maltese, was actually very poorly and the vet gave him a dire prognosis, but then I changed his diet and he got a second wind. We hadn’t yet had our young dog, Willow (an Australian terrier with a drop of Staffy), desexed because she’s never in unsupervised contact with other dogs and we didn’t believe Nero capable … well.

STANDOUT SALES
en Riddle (Buxton Newtown) opened proceedings at 32 Girton Crescent, Manifold Heights, on Saturday with a heartfelt message from the vendors of the five-bedroom, two-storey house. A huge crowd of about 150 heard the vendors were leaving the neighbourhood with heavy hearts, having made countless strong friendships in the tight-knit area through some tough personal times. They were leaving behind a property packed with original features but updated with modern additions and touches. “This is not just a beautiful home, but a great lifestyle among the beautiful people of Girton Crescent,” Ben said. “This is great value for your money when it comes to housing.” A man was quick to offer $950,000 and in the blink of an eye the mark was at $990,000 and the property was “well and truly on the market”. The first bidder dropped out but another joined the fray and the mark rose beyond $1 million. After 36 bids, Ben brought the hammer down at $1.07 million. The winners, a local couple, plan to move to the property. Ben had earlier sold 36 T Toyne Avenue, Hamlyn Heights, a three-bedroom character weatherboard on a corner block of 884 square metres. Four parties fought it out, with the hammer coming down at $631,000. The winner was a local who has been renting in Geelong West. Ben’s colleague Dylan T Taggert (Buxton Newtown) had success post-auction at 4 Elcho Street, Newtown, a two-storey brick house on just over 790 square metres. The property was passed in at $518,000 but sold soon after for $555,000. The buyers, a young local couple, have plans for development.
32 GIRTON CRESCENT \ MANIFOLD HEIGHTS Just around the corner at 213 West Fyans Street, Newtown, Dave Gray (Buxton Highton) faced a crowd of 35 outside the spacious four-bedroom house with multiple living zones. “What an exceptional lifestyle comes with this property,” Dave said, pointing out the proximity of the Barwon River and the joys of the river end of Pakington Street. “Think about what it’s going to be worth in five to 10 years, not what’s on the contract today.” There was little reaction from the onlookers. “Can I remind you it’s a public auction, not a silent auction,” Dave said. Soon enough, a bid of $600,000 rang out and it became obvious that two young couples were going to fight it out. The mark crept up to $680,000, at which point the property was passed in. The highest bidders soon had the prize
for a higher, undisclosed price. The young couple, from Melbourne, intend to relocate to the property. The strength of the market in Geelong West was on display again, as a crowd of 75 gathered outside 37 Lawton Avenue. Robert Kules (Barry Plant Geelong) said the five-bedroom, two-storey character weatherboard was sitting on 630 square metres of prime residential land. “Does it need some work? YYes, we know that, but the sky’s the limit,” the auctioneers said. “Have a look at the neighbouring properties. This is arguably the best street in Geelong West.’’ A vendor bid of $850,000 coaxed a woman to place an offer of $870,000, at which point the property was passed in. It sold soon after for $935,000 to a local buyer who is ready to roll up their sleeves and restore the property to its former glory. ●

HOUSE OF THE WEEK CERES \ 521 BARRABOOL ROAD
T
he white-picket-fence lifestyle has been slightly updated at this exclusive address. For a start, it’s a black picket fence that marks the entrance to this recently built three-bedroom house. The brilliance of the industrial design on show is also a long way from traditional. But, while it might be a modern take on the concept, this house offers an idyllic way of life in every sense. Ceres is one of the Geelong region’s most tightly held markets. Surrounded by rolling hills, its appeal runs far and wide – not only does it offer the quiet of rural life and the tight-knit community that comes with it, it’s also just minutes from Highton village. The nearby ring road has also given Ceres easy access to Melbourne. It was always going to take something special to fill this block on the main strip of this quaint town, in a neighbourhood of quality family houses. It’s safe to say the three-bedroom weatherboard more than fits the bill. From the large open spaces to the soaring ceilings, intricate details and luxury finishes, it’s as impressive as it is unique. Every zone has been carefully designed to maximise the space and to create interest – even the toilet is worth a second look. How often can you say that? A black front door with feature timber handle opens to an expansive open-plan zone that extends from the front of the house to the back. The northerly aspect fills the entire area with natural light. Matte engineered-oak floorboards run throughout, while a cathedral ceiling with white timber panels creates an amazing sense of space in the living area. The built-in TV unit is a practical addition, with a marble top that gives it a sense of indulgence. A beautiful open fireplace is a real showpiece. Central to the open-plan area is a designer kitchen. Elba marble features once again, on the large island bench, accompanied by a brass trim. Black mosaic tiles on the splashback add a warm, contemporary texture, while black industrial lighting complements the black aluminium window frames. The kitchen flows into a dining area, with sliders to the back deck for easy indoor-outdoor entertainment. There are two bedrooms downstairs, with the main at the back of the house. There are two walk-in wardrobes and a five-star en suite with floor-to-ceiling mosaic tiles and a walk-in shower. The main bathroom, down the hallway, is also tiled floor-toceiling in diagonal subway tiles. It has a handsome timber vanity, freestanding bath and walk-in shower. At the front of the ground floor, the second bedroom has a built-in wardrobe. Up a wide timber staircase is a rumpus or office area on a mezzanine, along with the third bedroom. There’s a low-maintenance backyard, with two water tanks that make maintaining the lawn a breeze. The property has rear-lane access to a double garage. The local primary school is a stroll away, and Highton village is less than a five-minute drive. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au
