he Geelong housing market continues its strong performance for sellers, with the latest data revealing a significant decline in the time it takes to sell a home and the level of home asking-price discounting. Geelong reported an average 82 days on the market for privately sold houses in the three months to the end of April. This was a significant drop on the 113 average days on market recorded for the same period last year. Geelong units are also selling faster, with average days on market for private sales falling to 113 days in the April quarter. That compares to 153 recorded in the April quarter of 2016. Average discount rates have also fallen in the past year for Geelong houses and units. The average discount rate for privately sold houses fell to just 5.3 per cent in the three months to the end of April, compared to 5.7 per cent for the same period last year. The unit discount rate has also fallen – down from 6 per cent to just 5 per cent. The Surf Coast has also recorded significant declines in average days on market and the

Geelong’s property hot spot \ Newtown. I still think it’s very affordable for what you’re getting. It’s so close to schools and shops and the Pakington precinct. I also think Manifold Heights, Herne Hill and Hamlyn Heights offer great buying. Manifold Heights has a higher level of buyer and there’s great entry-level buying in Herne Hill and Hamlyn Heights. My favourite place? House Iberia in Manifold Heights is great for a coffee and Bistro St Jean is a favourite spot for dinner. On days off I like to … on my one day off a week, I enjoy spending time with my fiancee, catching up with friends, watching the footy or having a hit of golf. Just relaxing. ●

Install pots of bee-friendly plants & herbs COST \ $5-$35 If they go, we go too. So take inspiration from actor Morgan Freeman, who turned his property into a haven for bees, and help out our buzzing friends. As urban flora disappears, Daniel Burke from Ceres Permaculture and Bushfood Nursery recommends having pots of bee-friendly plants in the courtyard, garden or – for apartment dwellers – on the balcony or roof. “It supports bee colonies to have plants to forage,” he says. Pots can be bought cheaply and taken with you if you move. “Bees love salvias – like salvia leucantha, African Sky, Black and Bloom,” Daniel says. “They also love purple flowers, they’re attracted to the colour purple – cottage plants like lavender and borage, and perennial herbs like rosemary and thyme.”

Turn down your hot water

(SUPPLIED)

Put food waste into a compost bin

) CK TO (IS

COST \ FREE Heating water for our showers and to wash clothes is our homes’ biggest creator of greenhouse gas emissions. To cut emissions – and your bills – find your hot water system and set the temperature to 60 degrees (hot enough to prevent growth of harmful legionella bacteria, says Anne Martinelli from Environment Victoria) or 50 degrees for continuous hot water systems.

COST \ $0-$80 Food waste that goes into landfill creates methane, which is 25 times more toxic than the fumes from your car. Avoid this by popping an inexpensive compost bin in the corner of your garden, or an indoor one on your kitchen bench if you live in an apartment. Throw all your food waste in there, along with any green waste such as lawn clippings and leaves. The truly cheap might like to make an old-fashioned compost heap. When it’s full and broken down, dig into the garden (or your pots of bee-friendly plants), and if you need to move house, simply rinse your bin and go.

W

e all know how to recycle and use a water-saving shower head, but what are some other energy-efficient ways to cut down on your emissions and bills? You might not have the money (or your landlord’s permission) to install pricey solar panels, so we’ve rounded up some simple and portable ways you can make a difference at home for less than $50. ●

Leave out a dish of water for birds & bees to drink

(SUPPLIED)

COST \ FREE It’s easy to forget that animals and insects need to drink, too. “Bees drink a lot of water as they use it in the production of honey,” Daniel says. Janet Hand from BirdLife Melbourne says that while we should never leave food out for birds, they do need water. Buy a birdbath like your nana had or use any bowl or container you have lying around. “I’ve got an old fry pan in the back garden and the birds love it,” Janet says.

DIY insulation COST \ $3-$50 We’re a land of extreme weather, but houses in Australia are often glorified tents, Anne says. “A big chunk of the money we spend on electricity and gas bills is just blowing out the window.” Insulation makes a big difference and can halve bills and emissions, she says. Those who don’t have pockets of cash might buy draught-sealing tape and plug up all the holes and gaps they can find. Anne also recommends zoning living spaces by sealing off the room where you spend most of your time and where the heating or cooling system is located. If there is no door, install heavy fabric or curtains in the doorway (try heavy-duty double-sided tape) so heating or cooling isn’t trickling into unused rooms.

Use good-quality portable solar light-bulbs COST \ $29-$39 There’s no need to get pricey solar downlights installed because the future is portable. Good-quality bulbs, such as Nokero, will give you up to six hours of light every night and last for 10 years. Simply charge the bulb in the sun during the day. At night, you can use the clip to hook anywhere in your house for emission-free light. MAY 11, 2017 \ DOMAIN GEELONG 5

lovely old Liardet painting shows Geelong from Western Beach back when Aborigines camped along The Esplanade. It dates to the 1840s and the tribesfolk seem a bit bemused by the changes to their bayside. There have been lots of changes since, of course. A good few more are happening now as investors plunge into the thick of all things inner-west. It’s a nice old part of the world among the bayside peppercorns and palms, so it’s not surprising people are cottoning on. It wasn’t always that way. In his novel Illywhacker, Peter Carey talks about Geelong Illywhacker turning its back on the bay, throwing up woolstores and walls to the water. It was a polluted mess for a long time, too. There was a time when travelling Western Beach offered traps for the unwary, who got lost in its dense bush. Old lore has it, too, of rum-running, illegal immigrants and smuggling in tunnels from the waterfront to pubs, notably The Max and the Terminus.

It was the wild west. The last illegal arrival I heard of, though, was a frogman who emerged from the water at a New Year on the Pier bash to unzip his wetsuit and step out in a tuxedo. Very Sean Connery. Oh, and also some so-called hairy Peruvians from artist/ author Robert Ingpen’s wonderful Poppykettle tales, bronzed in their puttees and tunics, in a kids’ playground. Dig about Western Beach and you’ll find a charming treasure trove. Wood ovens, Texas hamburgers, antiques, churches and bowling club on one side; yachts, masts, boat clubs, jetties, historic bollards, cliffs and promenades on the other. In between lie tales of a local Glastonbury thorn, reputedly from the tree Joseph of Arimathea, planted when he took Mary to England after Christ’s death. There’s an Egyptian mummy’s head, which might have been in the old teachers’ college at Lunan House, stashed away with other artefacts from the former Geelong museum. It was taken from the Valley of the Kings and donated to Geelong by a Mr E.J. Haynes. The first photograph of Geelong was probably a shot snapped at Western Beach. The beautifully restored Brown Brothers iron store nearby, for years a decrepit disposals store, is heritage-listed to the eyeballs and

NOEL MURPHY EXPLORES OUR WILD WEST

“there was a time when travelling western beach offered traps for the unwary” dates to the roaring days. Silos, a grog shop with the most curious alcohol range in town, car yards, the rattle of trains, a car wash and a strip club have all punctuated the area. The thing of wonder to me is the architectural aspect of this newly popular inner-west. A convention centre, if Spring Street gets it right, will become a landmark. New apartment complexes are rising, too – The Mercer and Miramar, notably – to match high-rises a block or two away in the CBD. Deakin Uni’s Waterfront campus, which once housed Ford’s earliest Geelong operations, has had a few reincarnations since its woolstore beginnings. Today, it hosts an architecture school, which produced blokes like Steve Tillinger, who designed The

Mercer’s clever matrix of responses to the water, greenery and sky of the area. It’s funny how things go round. I remember going to Western Beach as a pup in archi school myself. Buchan, Laird & Bawden’s architecture studio was there in a terrific old Victorian house of dichromatic brickwork and bull-nosed verandahs – it’s still there today, pretty as ever. As I say, these days Western Beach is a pretty sweet enclave of heritage and contemporary homes for those with coin. It’s also home to a flamboyant ex-mayor, who knows an investment when he sees one. Sadly, though, his mayoral flags are no more. City Hall prevailed on him to remove them. Some people just have no sense of place. ●

aredevils are a funny breed. Some are clearly adrenalin junkies bent on scaring the daylights out of themselves for the rush. Others are more methodical, analytical, driven for the thrill, but exercising more care. Talk to, say, base jumpers and you’ll note a supreme kind of confidence but also a deadly serious attention to detail. One slip and the game’s over. The same goes for highwire artists, Formula 1 drivers, stuntmen and pilots, divers, speleologists, rock climbers, commandoes … blink and you might find yourself dead. Torquay ski superstar Lorraine Huber talks about an “avalanche moment” that very nearly persuaded her to walk away from extreme skiing – better known these days as free riding – where she is ranked No.1 in the world. That’s world No.1 at throwing yourself over a cliff – a breathtaking sport many consider the scariest on the planet. When your career is all about jumping off a mountain, it pays to know everything you possibly can about what’s underneath you: the type of snow, where rocks are, the angle of the slope, what line you need to take. Judges agree and detract rather than add points for reckless manoeuvres. But avalanches, for all the planning, awareness and calculated risk, are just terrifying. It’s not you throwing yourself at the mountain, that’s the mountain throwing itself at you. Lorraine is well aware of the threat. At times, it has almost prompted her to walk away from the sport she helped pioneer in the Austrian alps, and which she has dominated

events and Kastle Adventure Tours, a fully certified ski guide, and a director of free-ride camps. Her sponsors include KJUS and Kastle, together with Scott, Garmont and ABS Avalanche Airbags. As you might expect with a dangerous sport, it hasn’t all been smooth skiing. In 2007, Lorraine ruptured her anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in a bad crash. She had a ligament graft transplant – using a part of her hamstring to replace the ACL. The MCL was sewn back together. “I did eight months of rehab in Australia before getting back on snow,” she says.

“My rehab didn’t go so well because I always had pain behind my kneecap, which prevented my wasted muscles in my right leg from redeveloping. I developed tendinitis in my right patella which, unfortunately, has become chronic.”

D

id she find a strength she didn’t know she had? “Yes, absolutely. I don’t think it is anything unusual though and I believe most people would have done the same. If life deals you some hardships, then you just get through it because you have to, one day at a time.”

(STEFAN SCHLUMPF)

in international competitions for more than a decade. Raised on the snowfields of Austria, in Lech am Arlberg – with the nearest ski lift just 100 metres from her front door – Lorraine went to ski school instead of kindergarten. Aged eight, she moved to Australia, to her mother’s home town of Torquay. She studied at Newtown’s Sacred Heart College and grew up by the sea, but managed regular trips back to Austria to ski. Since 1998, after graduating from Sacred Heart, she has lived in Lech am Arlberg. It’s her father’s home town and her family has more than 400 years of history there. But Lorraine lived in Torquay until she was 18 and the Surf Coast town still feels more like home than anywhere else, she says. She still has friends from primary and secondary school. But in Lech, back in 1998, her world was about to change again. She would discover the adrenaline rush of free skiing. In heavy snow, Lorraine and her ski instructor buddies would ski fast, make long turns and drop off cliffs. “Of course, I bailed every time, but in the heavy snow fall, it didn’t matter,” she says. “On the fourth day, the sun came out, and I was tearing it up with my mates.” That was it. She was hooked. A few years later, urged on by her friends, she entered her first big mountain free ride contest – the Red Bull Snow Thrill in Slovenia – and won. She’s been professional ever since. In 2014 she was pipped for the Free ride World Tour’s top spot, running second to fellow Arlberg skier Nadine Wallner. She’s also a coach for prestigious KJUS World

Lorraine has also had more recent injuries, and her resilience has again been invaluable. “The season before, I came closer than ever before to achieving my goal of becoming free-ride World Tour champion. After a crash at the finals in Verbier (Switzerland), I placed second overall behind Arlberg local Nadine Wallner,” she says. “I had tasted blood, however, and was super-motivated to keep training and improving. During my off-snow training, my main motivator was the overall title. “Come December, I was at the top of my game, feeling physically and mentally stronger than ever.” But on December 26, disaster struck. “All day we had been skiing low-angle grassy slopes and were having a ball. Suddenly, I hit a rock hidden under 30 centimetres of snow and came to a complete stop. I broke my ankle on impact. “When I heard my doctor give me his diagnosis of five to six weeks rest, my world started crumbling around me.” The enforced time out was a period of reflection. Lorraine realised she had focused to much on the overall title, instead of directing her focus from one event to the next, aiming to ski her best each time. Within five weeks, almost miraculously, she was back skiing the Freerider World Tour. She finished seventh overall. This year, Lorraine’s drive, determination and steely resolve helped her to finally take the Freerider World Tour No.1 mantle. “What drives me to be a free rider?” she says. “I want to live a passionate life. I want to live a life that’s full of passion and a strong life and free riding allows me to do that.” ●

Ask the wine guy At a recent dinner, a friend had a Q different-shaped glass for every different wine poured. How many wine glasses do you really need?

A

Imagine all that washing up. You really only need two glasses – one for red and one for white. There’s no need for a Champagne flute – a white wine glass does a better job of trapping the complex aromas of sparkling than a flute. For red wine, a large, deep bowl works best as an all-round glass. The larger surface area helps to expose reds to oxygen, opening them up and softening tannins. ● GOT A QUESTION? EMAIL \

This is a rich, ripe and glorious cabernet. From its medium-bodied blackcurrant, red and blue fruit flavours to its cedar oak, a whiff of tobacco and great, grippy tannins and bright acid, it’s seamless and a joy to drink. A long finish of dark berry and bittersweet chocolate completes the wine. ●

It’s so good to see Beaujolais so widely available these days. From the village of Brace to the north of Lyon, this is at the richer end of the Bojo spectrum, with perfumed strawberry and blood plum aromas. Savoury berry flavours are carried by juicy acidity and a fine mesh of powdery tannins that bring structure. ●

Rhone-style whites such as this are so well-suited to central Victoria. It’s only just been released, but at four years of age it’s right in the zone – lemon, pear and apricot aromas have a savoury nuttiness that’s really alluring. love shack Sea change: Andrea Shaw & Duncan Russell-Smith (below) took a minimalist approach to decorating. (BRITTANY AMBRIDGE)

“our vibe matched the house. We could already picture ourselves in it”

a torquay artist has turned an ugly duckling beach house into a stylish surf shack

E

very surfer has a version of that story. The one about their perfect wave or the best day they’ve had on the water. Most of these tales involve double or triple overheads, or paddling out in some far-flung locale. That’s not the case for artist Andrea Shaw. Her idea of a good time is far more simple: a great day at her favourite local break Point Roadknight. “If there’s a big enough swell, you can get this really long beautiful ride,” Andrea says. “You can literally catch a wave, take it 500 metres or so to shore, walk back to the break on the beach, and start the whole circuit all over again.” It doesn’t hurt, of course, that Andrea lives in one of the best surf towns on the planet, Torquay, where legendary brands such as Quiksilver and Rip Curl are based. Andrea started surfing three years ago, initially only to have a more accessible alternative to skiing and snowboarding, which she has done since she was five years old. “For some reason, I have this obsessive need to propel myself over the earth at high speeds,” she says. It’s a passion, though, and the fact that she

could afford to snowboard only once a year was taking its toll. Andrea has filled that void with surfing, hitting the water far more often than she ever saw the slopes. Unlike most newbies, Andrea hasn’t taken any lessons. Instead, she bought a board and went at it trial-and-error style. She says the only things she ever really worries about are run-ins with old sea dogs who’ve surfed the same breaks for 40 years. “Get in their way or snake one of their waves, and it’s like your grandpa giving you a talking-to.” At least once a week she paddles out with a group of women, many of them fellow artists and creatives who work out of the same studio as Andrea and her furniture-making husband, Duncan Russell-Smith. “The group texts start before sunrise. We don’t even use words anymore, just emojis: surf emoji, thumbs-up emoji, thumbs-down emoji, question mark,” she says. “That’s standard practice – even in the winter.” All the members of her crew surf because it’s fun. They find being in nature, on the water, peaceful, relaxing and centring. It was this need to be outdoors that brought

Andrea and Duncan to the Surf Coast three years ago. He’s originally from Britain, and she grew up on a farm in the country. After years of living in Melbourne together, they were ready for a change that involved a little more house and a lot more greenery. The 1960s modernist home they ended up in offered both.

A

ndrea and Duncan are the first to admit that, from the outside, it’s a bit of an ugly duckling. It’s the oldest house on their street block and hasn’t been renovated in more than 20 years. But they saw past what scared off most buyers – the falling-down shed in the yard, the pinky-beige kitchen laminate – and fell in love with its potential – its open floor plan and natural light. “Our vibe matched the house,” Andrea says. “We could already picture ourselves in it.” In just over a year, they’ve managed to turn the once dated space into a cosy, eclectic hideaway. They’ve done it with savvy design choices that work with what was already there, rather than through expensive renovations. The furniture, a mix of mid-century

vintage finds and custom pieces by Duncan, accentuates the clean-lined architecture and retro aesthetic, while Andrea’s modern artwork and super-bright textile collection add vivid bursts of colour. On the whole, they’ve taken a minimalist approach to decorating, preferring the laid-back feel of having a little over a lot. If anything, they’ve spent more time in the garden, where they’ve planted hibiscus bushes, a lemon tree and lots of tomatoes, cucumbers and pumpkins. Most afternoons Andrea will drag a chair from one garden-view window to the next, chasing the sun across the yard and soaking in all her hard work. ●

t’s little wonder a sensational house just 50 metres from Pakington Street in Geelong West was the spot to break records on Saturday. “If I can’t see you make yourself known,’’ Jarrod Leonard (Buxton Geelong East) told the crowd of more than 100 milling around the front yard at 45 Wellington Street. As the weather threatened to turn nasty, part of the crowd had huddled under the verandah of the five-bedroom house, a mixture of old-world charm and modern, cutting-edge living. The in-ground solarheated swimming pool was a bonus. “What an amazing home,’’ Jarrod said. “It’s one of the best properties on the market at the moment.’’ A woman was quick to announce her intentions with a strong opening bid of $1.1 million. Another woman joined the fray and the mark rose steadily. At $1.35 million a third woman, outside the front fence on the footpath, joined in. At $1.355 million, it seemed another woman wanted a piece of the action. But her raised arm was quickly lowered as she realised her untimely mistake in saying hello to a friend across the yard. “Don’t wave at an auction, ma’am,’’ Jarrod said. A couple of bids later it was all over, the hammer coming down at $1.361 million in favour of a woman from Melbourne who plans to relocate. The result is believed to be a record for Geelong West. It wasn’t a record at 47 Davis Street, Belmont, but when the hammer fell at the three-bedroom weatherboard on around 650 square metres, it was another statement about the growing strength of the suburb. “Every facet of real estate in this suburb is firing on all cylinders,’’ Ian Nichols

(Barry Plant Belmont) told the 50 onlookers. After informing the crowd that the property had been in the one family since 1959 and was the perfect place to forge longlasting memories, Ian took an opening bid of $410,000. That sparked a keen four-way contest that finished neatly on $500,000 when Ian brought the hammer down. The winner was an investor from Melbourne. A local buyer came up trumps at 15 Perth

Street, Belmont, a charming two-bedroom weatherboard close to High Street. “You YYou have great access to all the best of the 3216 postcode facilities here,’’ Dylan Taggert T (Buxton Newtown) told the 30 onlookers who had gathered under the covered decking area as the clouds opened. “I don’t mind listening to the rain but I’d rather hear from you guys,’’ Dylan said. Cold hands stayed in pockets so the auctioneer posted a vendor bid of $360,000. That warmed things up and three parties fought it out, the hammer coming down at $441,000. The winner, a young woman, plans to live at the property. It was a four-way contest at 10 Sheridan Street, Hamlyn Heights, where David Gray (Buxton Highton) guided the action in front of a crowd of 40. A local couple won the prize, a threebedroom weatherboard in need of some work on a block of more than 1000 square metres. The hammer fell in their favour at $593,000, well above reserve. ●

his architect-designed riverside residence embraces all that’s exciting about contemporary design. It projects a real energy, from bold bursts of colour and natural textures to expanses of glass and a strong emphasis on line and form. It’s a striking example of cutting-edge style that also happens to be in one of Geelong’s most-exclusive locations. These streets, just metres from the Barwon River, are lined with big family homes and this four-bedroom house is exactly that – but its distinct design ensures it’s like no other. The facade creates interest, while the black and red garage also suggests this residence is anything but ordinary. Splashes of red continue throughout the house, which offers luxury living on three levels. A steel spiral staircase leads to the front door – as entrances go, this one is pretty impressive. A relaxed living area and a home office take up this entry level, while another set of steel stairs leads to an open-plan zone that is sure to please those who love to entertain, with an easy transition from inside to out. The designer kitchen overlooks the meals area, while bifold doors lead to a covered deck and spacious yard with lush lawn and a landscaped garden. A gazebo offers a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the surrounds. The northerly aspect floods the kitchen and meals area with natural light. The kitchen has stone benchtops, quality appliances and a walk-in pantry. Up yet another set of steel stairs is a large living area, which opens to a private deck. It’s a spacious room the kids are sure to love. While there are floorboards in other areas of the house, this living area and the bedrooms are carpeted. The four bedrooms are also on this floor. The main has dual walk-in wardrobes and an en suite with a shower and bath. Two of the other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and all have glorious views. The spacious main bathroom has a double vanity. Tilted windows are a real feature on this level, with those to the north capturing the leafy outlook towards the river. This level also opens to an expansive deck that wraps around the back. It’s yet another space to sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet at the end of a long day. It steps down to the main deck off the open-plan zone. As well as the garage at the entrance, there’s also another single garage with rear access. High ceilings are a feature throughout the house. It also has underhouse storage, hydronic heating, ceiling fans, an alarm and ducted vacuum. The river walking tracks are a stroll away, as is Highton village. Geelong’s CBD, and some of the city’s most prestigious schools, are also close by. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au
