The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data reports the value of residential renovations in the greater Geelong region increased by 1 per cent in the March quarter compared with the previous three months – rising to $32.78 million. The greater Geelong result was a remarkable 33.1 per cent higher than the March quarter last year. he beehive over the one-time Boocock Butcher shop, the Iberian facades and bluestone walls, along with family names emblazoned across the top of stores – Shirley, Robertson, Thompson, Hooper – are a neat match for the scent of fat, sizzling sausages, of burgers and coffee wafting along Pako. Geelong West’s prime thoroughfare, a green-leafed village affair, hosts a kaleidoscopic array of wares and services. It’s crawling with artisans, provedores, travel junkies, trendy and pre-loved fashion, butchers, bakers, baristas, book-sellers, apothecaries, realtors, lolly havens and ethnic eateries. That’s just scratching the surface. If you scratch properly, you’ll find old knockshops revived as restaurants, pubs as old as any in Geelong – some of them still dispensing libations – and industries of yesteryear squirreled away in corrugated bunkers. The neighbourhood centres, people’s gardens and street barbecues, the leashed

“it hosts a kaleidoscopic array of wares & services” mutts and the banter of latte-sippers chatting al fresco all mark a community ethic at odds with much of today’s rapid-fire cyber lifestyle. It’s all a neat match, too, for the heritage houses that make Geelong West a remarkable living museum of architecture and a stunning

timeline of the Aussie weatherboard house. Rod Charles, one of the West’s living treasures and a former mayor, played a seminal role in the heritage overlay protecting the houses and streetscapes of old West. He pedalled every street, photographed every

house, talked to thousands – and became a local cycling encyclopaedia in the process. But Pako is also characters like 73-year-old Sebastian Flaccavento, who you’ll find pedalling famously and furiously on a miniature kids’ bike when he’s not working as a supermarket trolley attendant. And Rosemary Nugent, who keeps track of neighbourhood house, community garden and other West goings-on. And Dieter, a street fixture for years, who will expound on world matters for the price of a coffee, if you’re keen. Or the spruikers and community activists politely offering flyers. Some of the best treasures of West’s Pako are found in the old coloured brick, bluestone, corrugated iron, timber and ferrous beams holding its ancient habitat together. The place is old. John Batman’s wife, Eliza, died there in a long-gone shanty house. And the place is a serious melting pot of multiculturalism – Greek, Italian, Ukranian, Croatian, Sudanese, Vietnamese, Dutch, Chilean, you name it. All of which makes Pako a destination – a magical kind of souk, a Euro-Asiatic-Latin bazaar. It doesn’t get much more Aussie than that. ● » noelmurphy.com.au

mid the ongoing housing affordability debate, moving to regional areas is sometimes touted as a solution. But figures released last week show Victoria is the only state where rental affordability is worse in regional areas than in the capital city. This comes as rental affordability continues to deteriorate across greater Melbourne, according to the report released by National Shelter, Community Sector Banking and SGS Economics and Planning. The average renter in greater Melbourne spends 24 per cent of an $85,000 income on rent. That is less than a typical household in regional Victoria, where rent accounts for 25 per cent of total income; incomes in regional areas are also much lower relative to rent. Households are generally considered to be experiencing rental stress if their rent is more than 30 per cent of their income. Torquay, Jan Juc and their surrounding areas in postcode 3228 are the most unaffordable areas in regional Victoria for renters. Their rents average 41 per cent of a $60,000 annual household income. Typical households in Lorne, Woodend and Queenscliff are spending at least 33 per cent of their incomes on rent. (The study excluded towns with fewer than 10 new rent bonds lodged in the December quarter.) SGS Economics and Planning partner Ellen Witte says cities and towns close to Melbourne, especially those with good public transport links, are increasingly considered a lifestyle opportunity for people moving out of

The report also found there are no affordable areas for single pensioners to rent in Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo. Pensioner couples have to move out as far as Moe and Morwell to find affordable rents. Ellen Witte says the most torquay, affordable areas are also where there are fewest opportunities jan juc for jobs, services and education. most National Shelter executive expensive officer Adrian Pisarski says public transport is key, and that long-term planning is needed to put jobs and other opportunities – including health and education – near affordable housing. “Instead of ensuring inclusive communities by building affordable housing within well-serviced areas, we have consigned low-income households to outer fringes and poorly serviced areas,” he says. “Our societies pretend we put children first, but kids of sole parents are excluded by their parent’s low income [and have] lower opportunity and/or long and the surf coast’s increasing desirability is driving expensive travel.” He says the state government has up the cost of renting, WRITES CHRIStINA ZHOU introduced welcome measures to improve housing affordability, but these haven’t gone incomes on rent. By comparison, the figure is the city. This could drive regional growth. far enough. “All our cities need to work 29 per cent in Sydney, 28 per cent in Hobart Though house and unit rents have soared out how to build far more scaled affordable and 25 per cent in greater Brisbane and to record highs in Melbourne, according to housing,” he says. “In Melbourne, that should greater Adelaide. the Domain Group, the report found greater include medium-density in middle-ring Greater Perth is the most affordable Melbourne was the second most affordable suburbs, which could absorb more people metropolitan area, with rents requiring an metropolitan area in Australia, with renters and utilise the existing transport and other average spend of 21 per cent of income. paying an average of 24 per cent of household infrastructure.” ●

he teenage George O’Dowd growing up in London would not have believed that the 55-year-old artist who became Boy George is still in show business. “I was from Woolwich,” he says. “People from Woolwich didn’t become famous. I went for careers advice at school and I’d say, ‘I want to work in fashion or be a makeup artist or work with bands’ and they’d look at you like you were insane. ‘Maybe you should be a bit more realistic – factory work’.” But as “the pink sheep” of his working-class Irish family, George wasn’t cut out for regular work. “I knew I wasn’t going to do a nine-to-five job,” he says. “My father had his own building firm, all my brothers worked for my dad, they went straight from school and I was like, ‘No way am I doing that’.” George has four brothers and one sister. “They all went into painting and decorating. I preferred to paint and decorate myself.” It’s Sunday night and I’m with Boy George at Fox Studios in Sydney where The Voice is filmed. He has joined Seal, Delta Goodrem and Kelly Rowland as a judge on the top-rating talent show. After a long shoot, he’s energetic and happy to talk about his extremely colourful life. The new George has sworn off all his vices and now bakes his own gluten-free bread. He consumes no sugar, alcohol or cigarettes. “No smoke or drink for nine years,” he says, “and I do yoga every day, which I love.” Slightly chunkier in middle age but still with a mischievous sparkle in those famous green eyes, George is a different man from the androgynous, be-ribboned superstar who burst onto the scene in 1982 with Culture Club’s Kissing To Be Clever album and smash single Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? Me?. That breakout song reached No.1 in 16 countries and launched him as a pop-culture phenomenon, an ’80s gender-bending icon, drawing attention not just for the catchy tunes and soulful voice but also for his joyful embrace of being different. But the fame and fun was tempered with some dark years, including heroin addiction and some highly publicised jail time in 2009 for falsely imprisoning a male escort. Eight years later, George is in a great place. “There have been many times when I’ve crawled back from the abyss,” he says. “I’ve had troubles in my past. Music’s been the only thing that’s been constant. I’m very lucky I’ve always had music to turn to. Joni Mitchell says there’s comfort in melancholy when there’s no need to explain.” With the new healthy life comes a new outlook. “I invest in joy now, which is something I would have thought was quite weird when I was younger: ‘What do you mean you can be happy?’. It used to be if something good happened, you were happy, something bad happened, you were miserable. I kind of didn’t know about the space in between.” He talks about getting back together recently with Culture Club and how everything’s easier now. “Growing up is allowing people to be who they are,” he says. “When you’re young, you’re always trying to force your will on everybody. As you get older, you think, ‘I don’t need to make what I do unpleasant’. “There are times when I slouch and I have to say, ‘Right, no, pull yourself together, be professional’. It wasn’t something I could do when I was 19. If I was in a bad mood, everybody got it.” He has even secured a role as the face of fragrance giant Dior Homme. “I’ve become a supermodel in my 50s. It’s very exciting. I said to my manager, ‘Why don’t you get me some modelling work?’ and he said, ‘I think you should forget about that’. I said, ‘Why not? I could model watches’. As a joke. Three weeks later he rang. ‘You remember you mentioned modeling. Shall we start at the top? Dior’. Genius!

Bowie was an incredible lyricist. He created this ethereal, alternative landscape. I saw Bowie when I was 11 in 1973. I don’t know how I managed to get my father to let me go to the concert, but I did. And it was a life-changing moment for me. Bowie was singing about things nobody else was singing about. This was the time of Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, Knock Three Times on The Ceiling If You Want Me, and Bowie was singing about “his nebulous body swayed above, his tongue swollen with devil’s love”. What is this man talking about? ●

n early 1980s London, George was known around the clubs as a style guru and a “face” – a highly marketable one at that. He brilliantly married music, fashion, nightclub sass and that lovely voice, and waited for his break. And waited. “When I started Culture Club, every single person I knew had a record deal and we couldn’t get one. I think people saw me and thought, ‘He’s so extreme’. “[Drummer] Jon Moss would go to record companies with pictures of the band and they would all say, ‘What’s the girl called?’ and he’d say, ‘It’s not a girl’. Hence me calling myself Boy George. It plays around with the idea of ambiguity.” Growing up, he loved a bit of everything, from the glam of Bowie and Marc Bolan to the intensely private revelatory poetry of Joni Mitchell. “I grew up in the ’70s, which was such a colourful, eclectic, bonkers period for music: glam rock, reggae, punk, electro, and in the ’80s, which was born of all of those things,” he says. “I am the sum of all the things I grew up with.” George is enjoying his time on The Voice but says it can be tough to let people go. “But I tell them your career is shaped by how you use the disappointments and the successes.” His contretemps with veteran Voice judge Seal might be real or might be a fun part of the “tension” of the show. “We have very different characters,” he says. “But I have a lot of respect for him as an artist and he’s a great singer.” George still lives in London but spends a lot of time in Los Angeles. He has “half an album” recorded with Culture Club and they have written songs for the rest of it.

“But I might end up doing my own album first,” he says. He plans to tour Australia later this year as a solo act. He was saddened at the loss last year of his childhood hero, David Bowie. “I knew Bowie wasn’t well, so I was kind of preparing for some bad news,” he says. “We were communicating up until 2002, when he first got ill. When he stopped responding, I knew something was wrong. I saw a recent documentary and got quite upset because I realised, ‘That’s what happened’. “I have always been the biggest Bowie fan on Earth. Losing Bowie was kind of like losing a family member. All of my generation, all of my friends, the one thing we all have in common is that we are Bowie kids. He was like our father, so weird.” George’s fame now is, of course, less hysterical than it once was. “It was a nightmare,” he says of being in the eye of the celebrity storm. “I saw a photo of Justin Bieber sitting outside a restaurant (while a group of young fans watched him eat). Even now, if I were to sit outside a burger bar with this outfit on I wouldn’t get any peace. But in my civvies I can slip by unnoticed. I do that most of the time. I’m not Justin Bieber, I’m not 19, it’s not my moment. “I’ve changed my relationship with fame. I love being in the world. Yes, I love being Boy George, I love all the things that come with being Boy George but I also like to go out and have a cup of coffee or walk in the park. “The worst is when you’re in a restaurant and someone sends their child who’s five and they don’t know who you are. ‘Hello, my dad wants an autograph’. I say, ‘Who do you think I am? Mickey Mouse?’.” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

Joni Mitchell

“I’m Buddhist and I do actually believe that if you put things out there you do get them back. If you really want something and you put it out there, sometimes it does weirdly turn up.”

Adele

Joni Mitchell is a poet. I’ve met her a few times. She’s nothing like you think she is. She’s tough. Oh my god, she’s fierce. I met her in LA at a brunch in the Four Seasons hotel. She blew my mind. She was kind of bitchy. She said the only good singer was Billie Holiday and everyone else was rubbish. It’s always interesting when you meet people and they are not what you think. ●

It feels like there are different rules for Adele. Adele can make music like people did in the ’70s and ’80s but nobody else is allowed to. Everyone else has to be a formula, but Adele can make an acoustic album or put a piano on a record. If anyone else did that people would say, “That’s so old fashioned”. It’s one rule for her and one rule for the rest of us. ●

Bands and artists generally only make sense when they’re onstage. Sometimes it’s hard to get tours together, all these different egos and personalities, and then there’s that two-hour window on stage when you look around and go, “I like these guys. Don’t know why I ever hated you”. ● MAY 25, 2017 \ DOMAIN GEELONG 11

Drinking for a cause – I love it. There are quite a few wines that direct profits to charitable organisations, and those wines tend to be well-priced and good drinking. You do have to get in quick when you see them as they are often made in small numbers. Twin Peaks \ Stan, from May 20 stan.com.au

Podcaster Sam Loy has always been fascinated by cemeteries. Each to their own. But even if your obsessions are a little less morbid, you’ll likely find Sam a compelling storyteller. His documentary series has been likened to This American Life, but I was reminded more of John Safran’s gonzo approach to a subject. We start with an investigation into a mysterious memorial in Melbourne’s General Cemetery, which ends up opening a door on to how other cultures deal with death. ●

Never mind who killed Laura Palmer, the real mystery of this cult 1990s TV series is how it ever came to be a mainstream hit. It’s impossible to imagine its hypnotic blend of fantasy, soap opera and David Lynchian weirdness being broadcast on prime time today. The new run (confined to streaming service Stan) has been kept under wraps, but the right people seem to be in the right places, on and off-screen. Here’s hoping it can be as iconoclastic as it was 25 years ago. ●

Her career as concert harpist is on hold, she is in love with a married man who has never quite managed to leave his wife, and she spends her days playing music to patients in palliative care. Will this be the year she finally moves on? J.D. Barrett’s second novel is a delightful and very moreish rom-com, one that pretty much hits the intended sweet spot between Offspring and Bridget Jones. ●

CD

Music Mabel \ Bedroom EP (Polydor) soundcloud.com/mabelmcvey This 21-year-old British singer is on the fast track to international stardom. Little wonder, considering she’s practically R&B royalty, being the daughter of Neneh Cherry and Massive Attack producer Cameron McVey. Slick, nostalgic and earworm heavy, her music is ’90s trip-pop that recalls the heyday of Salt-N-Pepa, TLC and, yes, her mum. The title track and Finders Keepers have plenty of sass, taking on lusty bedroom antics with more front than anyone since FKA Twigs. ●

ardens, animals and antiquities have been Paul Bangay’s passions since he was a child. Growing up in Vermont, he had pet goats that he milked – and bought artwork with the profits. These days, the garden designer to the rich and famous has units in Toorak and Sydney, but he prefers to work from his base in Glenlyon, near Daylesford. “This is where I feel at home,” he says of the Tuscan-inspired villa he designed 11 years ago. It has views over what were once rocky paddocks, now a series of finely designed garden spaces. Paul shares the two-storey house with his partner Barry McNeill and their cocker spaniel, Ruby. The property, Stonefields, is one of the most photographed homes in Australia, thanks to the numerous fund-raising events the couple hosts there. The day of our visit, the house is buzzing with preparations for a family reunion. Despite the immaculate interior, the children are given free rein. “We’re not precious about the place,” Paul says. ● JANE CANAWAY editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

U L M U S TA B L E “Ulmus refers to the Chinese elms shading the table, which overlooks the view. In a garden it is good to have as many places as you can where you can go and sit. Shade is a big issue here, as is the wind – it’s just not practical to have an umbrella. The trees are semideciduous in town but fully deciduous up here. Hopefully they will soon develop their broad spreading shape.”

PERSONAL SPACE

“ROMAN” SCULPTURE/ S TAT U E O F J E S U S “I couldn’t afford an original Roman sculpture as a teenager, so I bought this armless statue from a Roman Catholic Church at Whelan the Wrecker and knocked its head off for added effect. It’s been everywhere with me since.”

GREEN CROCKERY

ANTIQUE LEAD DOGS

“I love setting the table up with green crockery. I’m kind of obsessed about it; wherever I go in the world, I look for more.”

“They’re 17th century Flemish lead dogs. When I built this house, I had them in mind and built those little nibs in the wall to take the dogs. I’d seen them in an antique dealer’s and loved them for ages. You could almost say I designed the house around those dogs.”

OILSKIN APRON & K N E E L I N G PA D “I bought these in Fortnum & Mason in London; I’ve had them for eight years and they haven’t deteriorated at all. There is a pouch for all my tools in the apron, and the kneeling pad is perfect for working in the vegie patch, which I love.”

SNAKES “The snake fountains are based on the lovely local copperhead snake. They were done for us by Ivana Perkins in Melbourne, who also made our kookaburra and wedgetail eagle sculptures. The snake fountains feed the rill, which forms the backbone of the garden design; we can see them when we’re in the sitting room.”

t was a day out for investors and telecommunications companies on Saturday, although for one buyer it was almost a disaster. After leaving his run down the Princes Freeway a little late, a Melbourne man had to quickly organise a local mate to do his bidding at 8 The Avenue, Belmont. Mobile phone stuck to his ear, the mate opened with an offer of $580,000 for the ageing three-bedroom weatherboard on a block of about 920 square metres. “The reality of Melbourne buyers coming down to buy our undervalued property is probably here for the next 20 years,” Ben Riddle (Buxton Geelong East) had just told the crowd of 55. Three parties fought it out and several times the two bidders there in person indicated to Ben that they were done, only to sneak in another bid just as the hammer was about to fall. “I’m not sure I believe any of you,” Ben said, after yet another shake of the head. Adding to the drama was the fact that the local bloke lost phone contact with the Melbourne investor near the end. Just as it looked like contest was over, a ute pulled up and the Melbourne man got out and made a couple of decisive bids. He got the property when Ben brought the hammer down at $688,000. The result was well above reserve. Out-of-towners were also chasing Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) around, starting at 22 Jabone T Terrace, Bell Park. “Geelong is on the move and the property market is going to continue to rise,’’ Joe told the crowd of 45 outside the four-bedroom brick house. The opening bid, though, came from Melbourne by phone, and it got things going at $425,000. Two other parties got involved and the T

22 JABONE TERRACE \ BELL PARK

8 THE AVENUE \ BELMONT offers were soon beyond reserve. The phone bidder kept up the pressure, and when the hammer dropped at $476,000 it was the Melbourne connection in front. Joe’s next winner came from further away, but no phone was needed. The auctioneer faced 55 onlookers outside 48 Donnybrook Road, Norlane, a solid, fourbedroom brick house ready for an update. An opening salvo of $170,000 set in train a

four-way contest that reached $277,000 before the hammer fell. An investor from Sydney took the prize. Matt Plunkett (Buxton Newtown) wrapped it up quickly at 27 Leila Crescent, Bell Post Hill, a four-bedroom brick house on a block of around 650 square metres. A woman on the phone among the 30 onlookers threw in an opening offer of $445,000 and the property was on the market. Another bidder offered $450,000 but the woman on the phone was quick to counter with $455,000, enough to see the hammer fall. Once again, it was a Melbourne investor taking the prize. Cara Road specialist Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant Highton) was back in the popular Highton Street, this time at No.20. He posted a vendor bid of $530,000 and took an offer of $540,000 before the fourbedroom two-level brick house was passed in. It sold soon after for $565,000 to yet another Melbourne investor. ●

HOUSE OF THE WEEK LOVELY BANKS \ 30 EVA PLACE

I

n a world that never seems to stop, this sprawling residence offers a place to sit and simply watch it all go by. The incredible panoramic views span from the You Yangs to Eastern Beach and, on a clear night, stretch as far as the Melbourne skyline. It’s nothing short of spectacular, as is the house. On two hectares, this four-bedroom house on the Lovely Banks hill was built to maximise not only the outlook but also available space. The homestead-inspired design fuses luxury with warmth and offers indulgent dimensions from start to finish. In fact, there are more than 50 square metres of living, making it ideal for growing families. A long, winding driveway reveals the classic design of the exterior and leads to the main entrance at the back. It opens to a wide hallway, with Tasmanian oak floorboards. A parquetry panel is a clever way of defining the hall space. A walk-in coat cupboard is another clever addition, providing a spot to store shoes and jackets. There are two living areas off the entrance, one a rumpus and the other a formal lounge or study. But it’s the open-plan zone straight ahead that grabs your attention. It’s an expansive space that beautifully captures the outlook to the north-east through timber-framed bifold doors and oversized windows. To one end, the designer kitchen is a sophisticated area with quality finishes. Glossy burgundy cabinetry adds warmth to white stone benchtops, while the island bench is a great preparation space when entertaining. The large walk-in pantry has pull-out cupboards, while the kitchen also has a built-in wine fridge, coffee machine and Ilve cooker. Servery windows open to the covered outdoor area, as do bifold doors off the nearby dining area. The living area up the other end of this zone has an ethanol fireplace, creating a cosy atmosphere. There’s an easy transition from inside to out and it’s hard to imagine a better space to entertain, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet. Sandstone pavers and a timber-panelled ceiling create a resort-style appeal, which is enhanced by a spa. By day, you get an uninterrupted view across Corio Bay, by night you can enjoy the city lights. Back inside, and there’s another indoor living area off the north wing of the house, which also opens to the front gardens. The three minor bedrooms are also at this end of the house. Each has a walk-in wardrobe. The main bathroom is nearby, as is the laundry, with plenty of storage space. Up the other end of the house is an indulgent parents’ retreat, with the main bedroom featuring two substantial walk-in wardrobes, a reading area or home office and an open en suite with an eggshell-shaped bath and double vanity. French doors open the bedroom to the lawn. The double garage has internal access and a large storage area, while the rambling garden is relatively low maintenance. From here, the ring road is minutes away, making trips to Melbourne a breeze. Geelong’s CBD is just 15 minutes away. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au8
