he Geelong housing market continues to strengthen, with home prices clearly on the rise through the autumn. Latest Domain data reports the median asking price for houses in Geelong increased by 0.2 per cent in May, to a record high of $430,000. Asking prices for Geelong houses have increased by 7.8 per cent on May last year. Geelong unit asking prices also rose during May, up 1.3 per cent to $311,000. As with houses, that represents a new record; asking prices for Geelong units are up 9.1 per cent in the past year. Asking prices for Surf Coast houses also increased last month, rising by 0.6 per cent to a record $699,000. That is a hefty lift of 11 per cent in 12 months. The Geelong housing market has had a strong start to the year, with rising prices fuelled by heady buyer and seller confidence. Winter is typically quieter for buyers and sellers as the market takes a breather before spring. But sales and listings in the greater Melbourne market rose in May and earlier this month to reach seasonal records. From July 1, first-home buyers in Victoria will

beating the blues kick in. “Seasonal affective disorder is also called the winter blues, and is a type of depression that tends to occur for people in the more dreary, cold and dark months,” psychologist Marny Lishman says. “The symptoms are the same as depression: low mood, unmotivated, oversleeping, and overeating for some people.” Getting outside is one of the best things you can do to avoid getting SAD. But, on the days when it’s far too grey and cold, there are ways to hibernate happily at home without succumbing to the winter blues. “Coming into winter, it’s important to get your home ready for a hibernating period, mainly because you will spend more time indoors than any other time of the year,” says Justine Wilson, director and principal stylist at Vault Interiors. “Due to the cold and shorter days, your home should feel inviting and comforting, a haven and a nice space to rest.”
Pretend it’s not winter Winter can feel like a distant memory when you’re tucked up at home, and this can be good for your mindset. “Rug yourself up and try to mimic summer in some way within your home,” Marny says. “Do everything you can around the home to make sure that you are as comfortable as you can be, whatever the season.” Of course, nobody wants high electricity bills, so think about how you can create warmth while being energy conscious. Justine suggests: ● Large rugs and runners for cold floors and
hallways;
● cosy blankets and throws in your bedroom
and living room;
● thick curtains to keep out the cold; ● use your winter quilt to help you feel warm
without turning up the heater.
Colour can also make your home a hibernating haven. “Adding warm-coloured tones to your decor is a great way to bring warmth to your interior,” Justine says. “Select rich tones (such as copper, burnt orange, mustard and maroon), which are on-trend and luxurious; these deep tones are great for winter styling and they can completely change the look of your interiors.”

Tone down your lighting
GETTING YOUR HOME WINTER-READy CAN HELP YOU BEAT THE BLUES, WRITES MEGAN BLANDFORD
The layout of your furniture can make a big difference to how comfortable your home is in cooler months. “Orient furniture in a way that maximises the heat from fireplaces or heaters,” Justine says. “Because you won’t be opening doors or windows to the outside as much, you can place sofas, armchairs or consoles in front of these otherwise dead spaces. This might double your feeling of space as you wouldn’t normally opt for blocking access, and it will allow you to get creative and refresh your living and bedroom spaces.”
While summer is all brightness and light, you want your home to be a little more toned down for winter. “Soft lighting will help to make your home feel brighter in the cooler months,” Justine says. “Table lamps and floor lamps are essential as the light is murkier and darker in winter than any season, so you will need the warm glow of a statement table lamp.” Get your matches ready, because winter is candle season. A good candle will give you that cosy lighting that’s perfect for winter hibernation. “Candles are essential in winter and will help you resist the urge to turn on every light in the house,” Justine says. “Candles will also assist in masking damp or unpleasant smells that come with having a house shut up tight during bad weather.”

If you don’t want to go out (especially on dark, rainy nights), ask others to come over to see you. Your friends might be happy to have an excuse to leave their house if they’re less inclined to hibernate. “Make sure your home is conducive to socialising, so you can do more activities with others during the cold months,” Marny says. You can also bring a little of the outside in, which can help you feel less housebound. “Bring in fresh flowers, succulents or floor-standing plants,” Justine says. “They will breathe life into your home, can assist in filtrating the air, and they look amazing.” ● JUNE 8, 2017 \ DOMAIN GEELONG 5

ollette Dinnigan is back. Four years ago, the celebrated fashion designer closed her boutique to focus on family and scale back her work demands. She left behind an impressive legacy. Not only was she one of the first Australian-based designers to show on schedule during Paris Fashion Week, she also dressed some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Nicole Kidman, Taylor Swift and Charlize Theron. Her name was synonymous with feminine silhouettes and exquisite designs featuring French lace and old-world glamour. Now she has switched high fashion for bed linen, creating a collection for Linen House. Her bedroom designs play on her love of French lace, but now there’s less Hollywood wow and more Italian rendezvous. “It seemed like a natural thing for me to do,” Collette says. “I am obsessed with bed linen. I collect it and buy it all the time. I buy antiques and love vintage items; I love the craftsmanship that comes with anything very old. When I designed this collection, I figured it’s something most women love and was thrilled to do it.” The South African-born, New Zealand-raised businesswoman moved to Australia in the early ’90s, and maintained a demanding schedule in the fashion industry for 24 years – including three trips a year to Paris to source fabric and to show at the city’s fashion week. She admits it all got a bit exhausting in the end. Inspired by a desire to live abroad while her two children, Estella and Hunter, were still young, she and husband Bradley Cocks relocated their family to Italy

hose of a certain vintage will remember curling up in front of the TV as children to watch The Jetsons, the ’60s cartoon about a futuristic family in Orbit City. While the Jetson family itself – bread-winning dad, stay-at-home mum, fashion-obsessed daughter and science-boffin son – seems rather old-fashioned to a modern audience, their house in the Skypad Apartments appears strangely prescient. From flatscreen monitors, to video-chat and smart-home automation, many of the inventions predicted in the show are already widespread. Others, like 3D printed food, are in the development stage. Given that it looks like it’s only a matter of time before we’re all living like the Jetsons, we asked some experts what we can expect in our homes in the not-too-distant future. It’s a kitchen – but not as we know it Many of the most mind-bending technologies relate to our kitchens. Some products – such as Samsung’s Family Hub fridge, which allows

These include kitchen benchtops that can transform into induction cooktops as needed, working surfaces embedded with nanotechnology that can identify bacterial contamination, pantries that let you know if you are running low on a particular ingredient and even

Futurist Morris Miselowski says many of the technologies are aimed at taking the labour out of food preparation. “Fewer people will want to cook in the way we have before,” Miselowski says. “We will use technology to achieve a lot of the things we need.” Think your house is smart? Just wait a few years In many ways, our homes are already technologically enabled. Smart TVs that stream services such as Stan and Netflix without a secondary device, security systems that provide live footage of your house on your mobile phone and indoor climate-control that can be managed remotely through an app are already a reality. But this is just the beginning. As Wi-Fi technology continues to evolve, the implications for our home are far-reaching. Potential developments include: TVs

Angela Ferguson, managing director of interior design and architecture firm Futurespace, predicts a growing number of houses will have a separate “command and control centre” in response to the growing presence of technology in our lives. These rooms will hide away things such as patch panels (small servers that allow you to control the settings in your house) and 3D printers, as well as other less aestheticallypleasing aspects of modern living such as
recycling bins and paper shredders. “It’s a bit like having a kitchen, then a butler’s pantry,” she explains. “The same thing is happening in the home office.” Your house will be a bit like a chameleon The applications of nanotechnology in the home are still being explored, but the possibilities are fascinating. Imagine floors capable of changing their appearance and texture, so one moment you feel as if you’re walking on timber floors, the next on woven coir matting, or conductive paint that can alter the colour of your walls at your command. Andrew Schunke, an interior designer at Architectus, believes emerging technologies will fulfil consumers’ desire for a bespoke experience at home. “Technology will give people the ability to adjust their space,” he says. “It’s like anything – it’s evolving, then someone will create the iPhone moment where it becomes cost-effective, easily resolved and accessible and then it will become a reality.” ●

Ask the wine guy long does vermouth last once Q How it’s opened? Vermouth is wine-based, which A means it deteriorates from the moment you open a bottle. From my
experience, you want to be finishing a bottle within three months, but producers will tell you theirs lasts anywhere from four weeks to six months. One thing they all agree on is that vermouth needs to be kept in the fridge once opened. It might sound like a short time, but vermouth is such a versatile drink that a bottle never lasts more than a few weeks. Vermouth straight over ice is a delightful, often-overlooked aperitif. ●

Contratto Vermouth Rosso (Italy) $47; 17%
Dolin Dry Vermouth (Chambery, France) $30; 17.5%
Maidenii Dry Vermouth (Victoria) $45; 19%
Contratto has been making vermouth since the 19th century, with 31 aromatics. Although labelled as a rosso, it’s made with a white wine base. Subtle aromas of spice, citrus and dusty herbs lead to a sweet wine – there’s 180 grams of sugar per litre. There’s a tremendous pull of bitterness through the finish, which lasts pleasantly, working as a foil for all that sugar. ●
Chambery, in the French alps south of Geneva, is the only region to be given an Appellation d’Origine for vermouth. The region produced a popular style of vermouth at the turn of the 20th century, but Dolin is the only remaining producer. Its nutty aromas – a little similar to fino sherry – are complemented by subtle flavours of dried apricots, marzipan and dried herbs. ●
This home-grown vermouth has a base of viognier, harvested late and made fairly sweet as a base wine, with Australian botanicals, including wattleseed, river mint and strawberry gum, alongside wormwood. It’s highly perfumed and equally fruity and herbal. Viognier’s trademark apricot character shines through, along with complex citrus, almonds, dried herbs, and spice. ●

paths, steep, winding staircases and Mediterranean sun has made this no easy feat, especially when my diet has consisted mainly of pasta, bread and pastries for almost a month. I reach a lookout at the tail end of my hike. The view of the pastel-coloured houses scattered across the rugged cliff-face takes
my breath away, literally. Not to mention the water, which is so blue it’s ridiculous. The smell of fresh tomato and fermented grapes wafts up from the restaurants at Riomaggiore harbour. I hobble down the final set of stairs, pasta and wine on my mind. ● SINEAD HORNE

Even if you don’t feel like pushing your body to the limit, you can’t visit Cinque Terre without attempting a hike on a section of Sentiero Azzurro (The Blue Path), which links the five villages. There are also smaller trails, including the easy walk from Riomaggiore through to Manarola, on which you’ll find Via dell’ Amore, or Lovers’ Lane; it’s home to the legendary kissing statue. If you’re up for a bit more of a challenge, try the hike from Vernazza through to Monterosso. You’ll get a panoramic view of all five villages and Cinque Terre’s only sandy beach, Monterosso al Mare, at the end. ●

With very few cars and limited Wi-Fi, Cinque Terre really does carry you back in time to a fairytale Italian world. The five villages date back to the Middle Ages, which explains the abundance of old castles and churches, including the neo-gothic Church of San Giovanni Battista and Church of San Francesco, the old Capuchin Friars Monastery. Forts are also scattered throughout the five sister towns, serving as a reminder of Turkish attacks in the 16th century. Some of the more upmarket stays are in Monterosso, including Hotel Souvenir, which is just steps from the beach, and Luna Di Marzo in Riomaggiore, with its stunning views. ●
Like anywhere in Italy, the food in Cinque Terre has to be tasted to be believed. We stayed in Riomaggiore, where our go-to lunch was Tutti Fritti, a little takeaway place that sold seafood in cardboard cones. For dinner, we enjoyed authentic plates of fresh pasta (note: Cinque Terre is famous for its pesto) and a bottle of chilled white at Ristorante Enoteca Dau Cila, which had a relaxed vibe. But it was the delis scattered along Riomaggiore’s main strip that truly won our hearts and stomachs. For a crazy cheap price, we loaded up on gorgonzola, brie, olives, prosciutto and salami at Alementari Franca – perfect for a platter to scoff at sunset. ●
If you’re looking to pick up gifts for loved ones – or a perhaps a pair of Italian shoes – there are a tonne of gift shops and a few markets in and around Cinque Terre to check out. I bought a couple of little treats from gift shops throughout Riomaggiore, including adorably designed bottles of Limoncello for less than €10 ($15) each. La Spezia market is a 10-minute train ride from Riomaggiore. It has a huge market on Fridays that sells everything from household knick-knacks to chic used clothing and leather shoes (be wary of pickpockets). The Forte dei Marmi Flea Market in Tuscany sells genuine Italian designer labels for up to half the retail price – it’s an hour from Cinque Terre but worth the journey. ●
Though Cinque Terre is less about the partying and more about the culture and relaxation, there are plenty of opportunities to soak up live music, bars and a good time. On returning to Riomaggiore about 9pm after a day trip to Monterosso, we were shocked to find the main strip, Via Colombo, packed with people dancing and singing along to a three-piece band. If you’re looking to enjoy Cinque Terre’s nightlife, The Vertical Bar in Riomaggiore is good fun, with frequent live music and charismatic bar-tenders. Monterosso, being the busiest of the towns, also has plenty to offer, including Fast Bar and dance parties down on the beach. ●

Volvo P1800 \ The Saint Before he made the jump to the big screen as Bond, Sir Roger’s big break came on television’s The Saint. He played master thief Simon Templar, who robbed the rich and drove a Volvo P1800. Before the Swedish marque became boxy and safe, Sir Roger and his P1800 made the brand the epitome of ’60s cool. ●

ir Roger Moore died late last month after a short battle with cancer. Not only was the 89-year-old a great actor, most famous for starring in seven James Bond films, he was also a great humanitarian who raised millions for UNICEF. We’d like to honour his memory by looking back at some of the cars he famously drove on screen. During his career, Sir Roger was behind the wheel of some exotic – and some downright average – automobiles. Thanks to his British charm and wit, he made all of them look cool. Here are our five favourite cars from Sir Roger’s television and film career. ● editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au
Citroen 2CV \ For Your Eyes Only This was arguably the slowest and least spectacular car Bond ever drove, but Sir Roger made it work. He managed to evade villains (driving Peugeot 504s) in the little French machine. The poor yellow 2CV took a beating (rolling more than once) but Bond’s deft skill behind the wheel, coupled with Sir Roger’s unique sense of humour, made the chase one to remember. ●

Lotus Esprit \ The Spy Who Loved Me Bond might be synonymous with Aston Martin but during Sir Roger’s run as 007, he swapped into another British sports car brand. The Lotus Esprit was a classic ’70s supercar, perfectly suited to Sir Roger’s Bond, and, in The Spy Who Loved Me, it took on silver-screen immortality. When the white Esprit dives into the ocean, it looks like a messy end for the machine. But it converts to a submarine and becomes one of Bond’s coolest cars. The car from the movie was bought by T Tesla founder Elon Musk, who has said he wants to convert it to electric power – and a
The American small car is a forgettable machine – but what it does in the 1974 movie is truly unforgettable. As Sir Roger’s secret agent pursues the villain, played by Christopher Lee, across the countryside, he is stuck on one side of a river, with only a broken bridge to help get him across. Bond’s Hornet leaps across the two twisted pieces of bridge, spinning in the air as it does so. Nowadays the stunt would be a simple affair produced on a computer. In the ’70s, it required a driver to actually achieve the remarkable twisting leap. It is cinematic gold. ●

In Sir Roger’s final Bond role, he stole a poor French taxi driver’s Renault and proceeded to perform automotive torture. Chasing the villain across Paris, the Renault was driven down stairs, across median strips, over a bus, and then the real damage began. The roof went in

t’s 20 years since a teenage Ella Hooper and her brother Jesse launched their band Killing Heidi in Violet Town in north-east Victoria. They are marking the moment with their first national tour in a decade. “It feels bizarre and amazing,” says Ella, now 34. “We broke up a long time ago – 2006 – so it’s 10 years since we played and 20 since we started.” Ella, who is also an ambassador for Music Victoria, encouraging music lovers to sign up to support local musicians, lives in a two-storey terrace house in Carlton with two friends. Like any share house, this one reflects the personality of its tenants, but there is one theme that stands out. “It’s super-feminine,” says Ella, referring in particular to the pink Smeg toaster. “I think we were all in the mood. Me and the other girls who live here were having fun when we moved in and looking to make the house a bit humorous and cute.” Her own room, she says, is “pretty girly for someone who’s a real tomboy”. “It’s weird to see such pink and floral in here because I’m really not that sort of person. My room, I guess, is my softer side.” ● PETER WILMOTH
HOUSE PLANT I love succulents because they thrive on neglect. They’re the hardiest of the indoor plants and I’m no green thumb. I’m taking cuttings from my mum’s house in the country and shoving them in pots. And green is my favourite colour.

1 9 6 0 S G U YAT O N E G U I TA R It was a cheapish Japanese rip-off of an American supermarket guitar, like My First Electric Guitar. They’re really funky and have this warmish tone. I found it at a great guitar emporium called Found Sound in Carlton. I like guitar shops. I’m like a kid in a candy store, except I’m on a budget. I go in there often with my friend Dan Sultan, who is not on a budget. He likes to spend a lot of money and I wince and go “do you really need another Les Paul?”.
TA M B O U R I N E This is made out of Schweppes bottle caps and old soft drink cans. My friend Taja brought it back from Thailand 10 years ago as a present and I thought it was so beautiful. I like things with rough edges, things that have had previous lives.
LP I got this record in an op shop many years ago. I’m a mad keen op-shopper. It’s called Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, by The Sundays. It’s a beautiful record. Harriet Wheeler has such a gorgeous voice. This style of music – low-fi indie pop – has really come back in the past few years – jangly, loose, quite breathy. It sounds like autumn to me.

EGG TIMER It gives me a 15-minute concentration window to focus on something because I’m a bit of a fidget and I’d rather run around the house accomplishing nothing.

I got this at a lost and found market in Brunswick East that I am absolutely obsessed with. This and its pair were only $200 or something ridiculous. The market has got the best, most kooky stuff – stuff you can’t get at Ikea. It reminds me of Priscilla Presley.

om Butters (Buxton Newtown) was on his game on Saturday, several times showing off his blue and white hooped socks to auction crowds. “Why wouldn’t you want to live in the city with the best football team in the world,’’ he told the crowd of 60 outside 7 Helen Street, Rippleside. Tom kicked things off with a vendor bid of $1.9 million for the two-storey, four-bedroom house with views across Corio Bay. Four parties got involved and one bidder, an older man, was the frontrunner. In the end it was down to a contest between him and a family gathered around a car. The family engaged in earnest discussion before upping the ante, but the man was resolute and the hammer fell in his favour at $2.24 million. The winners were a couple from Melbourne who plan to relocate. Tom hopped over to 368 Shannon Avenue, Newtown, where he faced 35 onlookers in the backyard of the renovated threebedroom brick house on a block of more than 900 square metres. “Quite simply put, I love this house,’’ Tom said. “When you open the front door it just hits you – wow.’’ An opening bid of $750,000 rang out and two young couples fought it out. Twenty-nine offers were made before the T hammer came down at $866,000, well over reserve. Cue the socks, and a big “Go Cats’’ from the auctioneer. The winners, from Melbourne, intend to relocate. Lloyd Moulton (Barry Plant Geelong) faced a crowd of 55 at 14 Paterson Street, East Geelong, a three-bedroom brick house on about 585 square metres. “This property is affordable and unaffected by overlays,’’ Lloyd said. “There are endless opportunities.’’ Four parties agreed and a hectic contest
14 PATERSON STREET, EAST GEELONG unfolded. At $480,000 the property was “well and truly’’ on the market and the action continued until the hammer fell at $531,000. The winners, from the Bellarine Peninsula, have bought the property as a family investment. It was also a family affair at 58 Hope Street, Geelong West, where Dylan T Taggert (Buxton Newtown) guided proceedings in front of 45 onlookers. A young man, flanked by his dad, made the running in the contest for the two-storey, twobedroom terrace-style house. Bidding began at $445,000 and the young man fought off another party with confidence, the hammer falling in his favour at $520,000. The man, from Melbourne, intends to live at the property. Many in the crowd of 50 at 39 Dorothy Avenue, Belmont, were thankful for the coffee van provided by Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant Highton).
It was cold outside the three-bedroom weatherboard on just under 600 square metres but it wasn’t long before the bids were flying, beginning with an opening gambit of $350,000. “An ambitious start, sir,’’ Kieron said. “But I like your ambition.’’ That ambition stayed in play as the bidder stayed in the contest and batted away the efforts of a young man across the street. After 21 bids the hammer fell in favour of the “ambitious’’ bidder; the property was his at $430,000. The new owner is a local tradie. In a sign that the Geelong auction market is spreading, David Gray (Buxton Newtown) guided a four-way contest in front of a crowd of 60 at 17 Gloucester Street, Grovedale. The three-bedroom brick house was snapped up by a young local couple for $360,000. They plan to roll up their sleeves, renovate and live there. ●

t’s not often you come across a 1000-squaremetre block in this exclusive inner-city suburb. Just as rare are houses of this size. While these leafy streets off the river end of Pakington Street are lined with period homes, this luxury sixbedroom house is a showcase of contemporary design. There’s an overwhelming sense of space throughout the house, with high ceilings and full-height doors. The finishes have an industrial edge, with exposed brick walls, while a floating timber staircase is a striking feature in the entrance hall. Of course, if you don’t care for the stairs, there’s always the glass lift. The vendors love to entertain. On seeing the back half of the house, it’s obvious they like to do it in style. In fact, few houses could match the indoor-outdoor entertainment area at this address. The open-plan zone at the back of the ground floor is nothing short of remarkable. The exposed brick wall and slate grey floor tiles in the living area are complemented by timber shelving and a built-in television unit. East-facing windows ensure the space is filled with natural light. The heart of this zone is the designer kitchen, with push-toopen cabinetry, an island bench, stone benchtops and a butler’s pantry. Large sliders open this zone up to the backyard. Next to the open-plan zone is the real showpiece – an indooroutdoor rumpus and entertainment room with a bar, kitchenette, pizza oven and barbecue. Polished concrete flooring ensures it can be cleaned with ease. The room opens to the open-plan zone inside and the backyard, and looks on to the in-ground swimming pool. It’s solar and gas heated so can be enjoyed all-year-round. The main bedroom is at the front of the ground floor. It has a walk-in wardrobe, as well as built-in storage, and a luxury en suite with a spa. Across the hall, the guest bedroom also has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Further along, the home office has a builtin desk and plenty of storage. The remaining bedrooms are upstairs, each with a built-in wardrobe. There’s a spacious study area with a built-in desk, as well as a second living area, making the first floor a complete kids’ retreat. As is the case with the rest of the house, the designer living spaces are combined with practical additions, including a large walk-in cupboard – actually more of a room – and more cupboards in the upstairs living area. The bedrooms all have easy access to the main bathroom, which is complete with two-way walk-in shower, freestanding bath and double vanity. There’s a storeroom out the back for the pool, as well as a fourth bathroom. At the back of the block – and well concealed – is a three-car garage and workshop with a separate driveway. The double garage at the front has internal access. This remarkable house is just a stroll from Pakington Street’s cafes and boutique shops and walking distance to some of Geelong’s best schools. It’s also close to the river walking tracks and the CBD. ● SARAH BIESKE property@domain.com.au
