ecent strong growth in home building in the Greater Geelong region has eased this year, although activity in the sector remains relatively robust. The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows 988 homes were approved for building in the Geelong region in the first four months of this year. This was a decline of 58 – or 5.5 per cent – on the 1046 approved in the same period last year. Building approvals for houses fell by 5.1 per cent over the year to 910, with unit approvals down 10.3 per cent to 78.
The Geelong area accounted for the decline in the overall result, with house approvals down by 20.8 per cent in the first four months of this year compared with the same period in 2016. House building approvals on the Surf Coast continue to surge, up 11.5 per cent in 12 months to 446. Fruit Property principal Peter Julian says the agency has opened a Torquay office at the Dunes shopping centre to cope with the demand. “I’d expect that figure to soar again come this time next year because the demand for land in Torquay is still really strong,” he says.

ustralians are a force in the interiors world. From our fascination with TV home improvement shows to the high calibre of our interior designers, we’re a house-proud nation with a fierce interest in design. While we’ve certainly taken inspiration from around the globe, here are five interior trends that Australians have mastered.
Healthy eclecticism
DEREK SWALW AL ELL / MAITLAND HOUSE / KENNEDY NOLAN ALW
Australians do well at mixing oldworld and new, and welcome a little bit of the unusual. We tend to embrace more obscure, original pieces of art rather than purchasing mass-produced pieces and small decor items just because the colours match our cushions.
The great outdoors Blessed with one of the most temperate climates in the world, it’s a no-brainer that Australians are expert at making the most of the outdoors. Not only do we have the luxury of more space than many other countries, but we love to entertain outdoors all year round. Our backyards are sanctuaries complete with vertical gardens, built-in kitchens, plunge pools and flourishing vegetable gardens. Achieving fluidity between our indoor and outdoor spaces is becoming more important, with homeowners placing particular importance on how their kitchen and living areas connect with their outdoors.
We can thank Scandinavian design for the popularity of blond timber in our homes – evident in furniture, benchtops and flooring – but expect to see darker timbers in the next few years.
Celebrating timber
Cool and casual
While timber is universally popular, Australians have embraced it in its raw, more natural form, rather than painted or lacquered.
We like to inject our laid-back, takeit-as-it-comes attitude into our homes with a little bit of rustic, a little bit of home-made and a little bit
Confidence with colour and blurring the boundaries between indoors and out are hallmarks of great Australian home design.
of re-purposed. Australians celebrate what the Japanese refer to as wabisabi (the perfectly imperfect). Roadside finds and op-shop bargains have surged in popularity among the environmentally and socially conscious.
Confidence with colour Let’s give credit to our vibrant weather again because, in general, Australians aren’t scared of colour.
Where our US and Nordic counterparts are partial to whites, beiges and all things monochromatic, Australian homes indicate that we are confident experimenting with saturated colours. We are even starting to dabble in regal jewel tones, splashing shades of navy on all four walls rather than stopping at the mere feature wall.

ich, jewel tones are hotter than a nor’wester in February when it comes to interior design in 2017. Hues borrowed from precious stones such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies are turning interiors into life-size bijou boxes with a luxurious, opulent feel. Several factors are driving the trend. In part, it is a reaction against the asceticism of minimalist, industrial and Scandinavian design traditions that have dominated interiors in recent years. Our ongoing love affair with vintage and bohemian style is another contributor. Some have even argued that the demand for more comforting, enveloping interiors reflects a desire
to sequester ourselves at home as world events continue on their dark and uncertain trajectory. Broadly speaking, the direction is to use jewel tones with bold abandon, such as in large pieces of statement furniture or painted walls, rather than in smaller, more subtle accents such as cushions and vases. Sofas upholstered in lapis lazuli blue fabrics and statement walls painted in topaz or bloodstone are particularly popular. Interior stylist Emma Blomfield, co-founder of The Decorating School, recommends picking a jewel colour and layering it in different shades within a room. “I’m a big fan of the three to five colour rule when I’m putting a room together,” she says.
The Decorating School’s Emma Blomfield, projects pictured above and opposite, advises layering rich shades.

“For example, if I’m using a sapphire blue, I’ll layer it up with a navy and a sky blue, varying the depths of the tone.” The deep, saturated colours of precious and semi-precious gemstones recall the glory of traditional interiors, whether the
imposing elegance of a gentlemen’s club, the plush opulence of a lady’s boudoir or the ornate luxury of a Parisian salon. It’s sumptuous, dramatic and just a little bit aristocratic. But that’s not to say that incorporating the colour palette into
your home requires a slavish adherence to the past: interior designer Louise Dammer says jewel tones work well with sleek, modern furniture. “It’s totally regal – the dark colours, the purples, the greens, the golds, when you incorporate those colours
around a room, on a cushion, on the coffee table, on a piece of art, it gives a sense of opulence,” she says. “That said, you don’t have to have an old-fashioned chair with velvet on it to make it look regal. You can have a contemporary chair, with very simple, uncluttered lines. “Contemporary art works well, too.” Some interior designers are taking the trend to its logical conclusion, blending an Aladdin’s cave of colours in one room. At his recent project for the Barcelo Torre de Madrid Hotel in Spain, renowned interior designer Jaime Hayon created a dining room with jade green walls, agate blue dining chairs and imperial yellow carpets. In London, celebrated interior designer Abigail Ahern’s East End home blends inky-blue painted floorboards with deep green walls for a moody, undersea ambience. Sure, it’s not for the faint-hearted. But let’s face it, nobody’s ever going to be talking about your greige-ongreige home.

he future is here and, man, it is way better than I could’ve ever imagined when I was watching The Jetsons as a youngster. We don’t yet have home robots or flying cars. But something that I’ve been looking forward to the most has been installed in my house and I think that will pretty much do me in the home technology excitement stakes. For ages, I have wanted the same kind of keyless entry you get with your car for my house. Little did I know that having one was as easy as changing the lock. There are several keyless entry locks on the market, available from different suppliers or the hardware store. Some have fingerprint, radio frequency identification (RFID) and
keypad accessibility. The one I have is also programmed into a whole system that, frankly, leaves the excitement I had for keyless home entry in the shade. I had no idea how cool a retrofitted home automation system would be from the point of view of adding functionality and ease to my life. But, now, with all the systems installed, the benefits are plentiful. First, the Nero system that links the Clipsal Saturn Zen switches with the new LED downlights, the Sonos sound system and my home security means I can control light levels in every room from my laptop, tablet or phone simply by moving a slide bar left or right. That sounds great as an end point but it’s just the beginning.

Interior designer Darren Palmer reveals how apps can personalise homes.
Rather than just transferring the manual controls you have on a switch to your phone, you can also group these functions together into scenes that tell your home to do specific
things when you want to use it in different ways. For example, you wake up in the morning and go about your daily routine: get up, switch on lights in the bathroom, turn on your favourite radio station or playlist, make your way to the kitchen and get ready for your day. Rather than being separate steps, all these things can be bundled together as a “wake-up scene” . That means you can press one play button and change the entire mood and function of your home’s sounds and lights. If you want to create a different mood for a dinner party, create a different scene. When you come home from work, do you want your house to welcome you by turning on your entrance

lights, interior lights and even playing music to help you relax? Yep, that’s as simple as creating another scene. The “welcome home” scenario also allows you to set up a geo fence
around your house so it knows you’ve arrived home – because you have your phone in your pocket. But the cool stuff doesn’t stop there. There’s the other app that complements Nero, called Push. It’s
basically a simplified interface that points to the functionality of Nero but with a graphic interface. It allows you to press a button on your laptop, tablet or phone that has, for example, an Apple TV icon and your “watch TV” scene will run. With the push of a single button, this controls lighting, turns on your TV, Apple TV and sound system, and turns off any devices and settings from any previous scene that was running. A bonus of handing over the controls of your AV system to Push is that you can change channels and volume, choose TV channels and drive menu items in whatever digital service you use. That means you do away with the need to run six remote controls. To boot, the Push system runs on Wi-Fi, not-line-of-sight infrared. It’s mind-blowing stuff, and this is all retro-fitted to an existing home. As if that isn’t mind-blowing enough, you can also introduce a girl
called Alexa. Alexa is an Amazon echo and you can program her to do everything that Push does, but with a simple voice command. The real benefit of this becomes clear when you have lights on all over your home, Sonos devices playing in different places and you’re running late. All you need to do is say “Alexa, tell home goodbye” and the devices and lights switch off, leaving you free to rush out the door. If, in your rush, you forget to lock your front door, you can do that on the fly simply by checking in with Nero and sliding a button that gives you a satisfying red dot that says your house is locked up safe and sound. Now, how cool is that? Darren Palmer is the author of Easy Luxury and HomeSpace (Murdoch Books, $39.99). Photos by Felix Forest. More on darrenpalmer.com

GARDENING / VEGIE ENV Y B y IN DIR A NAID O O

his week I have a serious case of garden envy. I’ve travelled to the Hawkes Bay region on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island to visit a vegetable garden that is garnering global fame. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers resort, high on the escarpment above the crescent of Hawkes Bay, is straight out of a James Bond film. Behind electric gates, roads wind through pristine forests, climbing, climbing until you reach a luxurious stone safari lodge with soaring ceilings. It is decorated with animal furs, fireplaces, brass lanterns and has alpine views that demand a martini in hand. Here, head chef and passionate gardener James Honore has created a foodie escape that recently made
Conde Nast Traveller’s 2017 accommodation Gold List. Cape Kidnappers might have a world-rated golf course, spa centre and helipad for those Texan billionaires, but it is the vegetable garden that bewitches you.
Just down the hill from the main lodge, tucked away in the scrub, is a 200-square-metre raised vegetable garden that supplies the Cape Kidnappers’ kitchen with a yearround supply of fruit and vegetables. Everything is grown organically
using compost from kitchen and garden scraps and manure from the farm’s sheep. In one bed, an elaborate system of trellises trains beans, cucumbers, pumpkins and other climbers. Another bed is dense with strawberry bushes with plump glistening fruit. Honore says guests want to experience local, organic produce and the vegetable garden – like the rest of the Hawkes Bay – is filled with fruits such as cranberries, crabapples, kiwifruit and apples. I’m impressed with how healthy everything is, even though we are on a blustery mountain top. A rich healthy soil is the key to high productivity, Honore says. “This is where home gardeners can often go wrong,” he says.

he big, rambling, half-finished house at 29 Reigate Road, Highton, was a bit of a puzzle. Set on a block of more than 720 square metres, the house had a floor plan that was hard to follow. But the bones were solid and the views sensational. Inside, there were six bedrooms and one bathroom. Plans had been made to transform the house into a fourbedroom, two-bathroom showpiece. Plenty of people appeared to see the potential, and Matt Plunkett (Buxton Newtown) faced a crowd of 55 outside the house on Saturday. “There’s no question it needs a lot of love,’’ Plunkett said. “But there is a lot of upside for this house.’’ Three parties, all young and keen to roll up their sleeves, got involved after an opening salvo of $450,000. The bidding was quick and raced to $570,000 in no time. That’s where the hammer came down. The winner was a young local woman who plans to renovate the property with her partner. Later in the day, Plunkett sold 65 Carr Street, Geelong, after auction for $717,500. The winner plans to live at the fourbedroom character weatherboard. Geelong railway station and Kardinia Park. Local buyers also came up trumps at 42 Dorothy Avenue, Belmont, where Dave Gray (Buxton Highton) stood in front of about 85 people outside the stylishly renovated threebedroom weatherboard. “It is a stunning house,’’ Gray said. “It sits in a fantastic pocket. Belmont has been one of the best performing suburbs for months.”’ The auctioneer opened with a vendor bid of $470,000 and a man went to $490,000. Then the action stalled. But it was merely the
calm before the storm and the bids were soon flying. Four parties fought it out and after a bold $15,000 increase from $610,000 to $625,000, the property was well and truly on the market. The hammer finally fell at $655,000, in favour of a young local couple who plan to live there. Over in Newtown, at 1 Warwick Street, Tony Moorfoot (Buxton Highton) passed in the threebedroom miner’s cottage at $472,500. It sold soon after to a local woman for a substantially higher, undisclosed, figure.

With a growing family, they craved a rural lifestyle without giving up city conveniences. The beauty of Batesford immediately appealed and ticked all the boxes, with the CBD and waterfront just 15 minutes away. Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon
Presents The Maldon Experience
MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.”
