Started out: In December 2015, at

he Geelong housing market continues to be good to sellers, who are taking advantage of rising competition with a surge in winter auction activity. There were 377 Geelong homes listed for auction in the three months to the end of August. That was a drop on the 453 held during autumn (which is traditionally stronger than winter) but well up on the 217 for the same period last year. Newtown and Belmont were the most popular suburbs for winter auctions, each with 47 listed. Next was Highton with 45, then Geelong West (30), Lara (20), Hamlyn Heights (18), Herne Hill (16), East Geelong and Geelong (12 each) and Bell Park and Grovedale (11 each). Buxton Newtown’s Tom Butters

says Newtown auctions are bringing big dollars. “Newtown holds so much appeal,” he says. “From fantastic schooling options to Pakington Street and the Barwon River … All of that is on top of the quiet streets with beautiful homes and it’s proved a winning formula.” Domain Group chief economist Dr Andrew Wilson says spring traditionally brings an increase in auction listings. “Geelong auction numbers will accordingly rise over coming months, which will be good news for buyers and provides more choices of available homes in the undersupplied local market,” he says.

erhaps more than any other place on earth Hollywood is synonymous with glamour. It’s hardly surprising, then, that the interior style associated with the film-making mecca is defined by a dramatic mix of patterns and colour, layering of materials and desire to make an impression. Hollywood Regency, also known as regency moderne, draws inspiration from the homes of A-listers from cinema’s “golden age” (the 1920s to the 1950s). Interior designer David Hicks, who splits his time between Melbourne and Los Angeles, says stars such as Joan Crawford and Judy Garland were among the early devotees. “[Hollywood style] is characterised by the bold use of accent colour … with metallic, lacquer and marble.” To add a little bit of Tinseltown in your own home:

Lights, camera, action

Richard Misso, founder of interior design firm The Stylesmiths, says Hollywood Regency is about openplan living, entertaining and parties. “This dictates how furniture is laid out,” he says. “Seating should be arranged in small clusters so guests can chat with one another. The dining room should be quite opulent, with a big table and very comfortable dining chairs with lots of cushions.”

Be inspired Dorothy Draper Considered America’s foremost tastemaker in her heyday from the 1930s to the 1960s, Draper pioneered Hollywood Regency.

Hollywood Regency celebrates contrast. One of its hallmarks is bold monochromatic patterns, such as chequered floor tiles, with gold or an accent colour like soft pink or turquoise. Kerena Berry, of interior design firm Designbx, says typical materials include mirrors, marble, lacquered wood, velvets and sateens. “Things tend to be oversized and there is a lot of detail.”

tyling a home takes a certain amount of time and finesse. A predictable list to make any home look lived in would go something like this: trays, books, magazines, candles, lamps, vases, living elements, decor items and soft furnishings. Great interiors are equal parts good fortune and good taste. Look at the room with a macro and a micro view. Seeing what the common elements are gives you the opportunity to tie in disparate elements, clustering them in styling vignettes, giving them something to relate to by replicating colour, pattern or material, and to check that every piece in the space looks like it’s part of the overall scheme and palette. A coffee table might be the same material as a lamp base or a fan blade; the side tables might be the same as the console, the handle on an urn and the colour of a cushion.

Palmer’s designs, from left, ombre gold metallic glass tall vase, $39.95; small gold hammered metal bowl, $19.95; raffia palm cushion, $99.95; Laelia cushion, $99.95; shell sculpture, $39.95, at Myer stores and online in October.

Let me break it down. A tan leather cushion is roughly the same colour as a brass bowl, which can be the same colour as an aged oak floor. The orange-brown colour will look the same irrespective of its material, so you can treat colours as colours – no matter how much light they reflect, their form or texture – and bring your room to life by creating a considered and beautiful result.

I have created a range, exclusive to Myer, with just that in mind, to make styling easy and predictable, with colours traversing material and consideration given to how they work as part of a palette. The hard work has been done to find the core decor pieces, such as trays on which to style your vignettes, whether they be bedside, side table or coffee table arrangements.

There are pieces to fit into shelving, on tables or as central elements, and there are vases and vessels to highlight the perfect floral additions, or to be highlights themselves. Soft furnishings play alongside the hard decorative pieces within the 130-piece range. The colours of the beautifully detailed and extremely high quality Belgian linen sheets are perfectly replicated in the bathroom towels, and there’s contrast from the linen should you want the smooth and sateen feel of supima cotton sheets that work in the luxe, classic or coastal themes. If you’re concerned about getting it perfect, don’t be. Find things that you love and then work out what you need to pair them with to make them feel at home. In doing that you will do the same for your guests and yourself – create a feeling of being right at home among some of life’s simple and achievable luxuries.

hotographer and graphic designer Rick Carter is a bit of a wanderer – and he wouldn’t have it any other way. “I have always been addicted to travelling and it was during an adventure that I fell in love with photography and the beauty of capturing cultures and their people.” During one of his adventures inspiration struck. “I was in India photographing the work of Opportunity International Australia, who provide small loans to impoverished women,” he says. “It was here in the urban slums and rural villages that my wife Annette

and I met these women and discovered their extraordinary traditional artisanal skills.” The result of their trip was ethical homewares brand One Another, which launched in 2013 with the goal of creating an oeuvre that combines the couple’s love of design with the women’s traditional techniques. “It took some time to find the right collectives to partner with, but we have been working with the same team in India since the beginning,” Carter says. The workshop supports 15 women and four men. “They work five days a

week, which is quite unusual for India,” he says. “They receive fair pay and have safe working conditions; that encourages training and a communal place for the women to support each other. Since then we have also partnered with women in Honduras, Uganda and Bangladesh.” Producing cushions, table accessories, jewellery and bags, the brand’s collections has minimal lines, bold graphics, colour blocking and mid-century line work, combined with the handmade qualities brought by the artisans. “Each piece modernises the

Is it worth using a buyer’s agent? Vivian Nardi

Finding the right property can be an arduous task, whether it’s a forever home or an investment. It takes time, determination and nerves of steel. The thought of engaging a licensed professional who will undertake the research, evaluation and negotiation of the entire purchase is likely to bring a sigh of relief for many. For some, a buyer’s agent is invaluable. But ultimately it’s a personal decision dependent on time constraints and finances. One major pitfall of home-hunting

10

is the amount of time it takes. If the thought of trudging around open homes with the kids in tow seems as desirable as having teeth pulled, a buyer’s agent might be a worthwhile investment to alleviate the stress. There are many reasons to opt for a buyer’s agent. Having an objective party representing your own interest obviously has its perks, as buying a home can be an emotional process. Many buyers become overwhelmed at auction but the decisions of a buyer’s agent are not swayed by emotion. They are experienced professionals who act on your behalf throughout the buying process. They are familiar with market data and understand the path to purchase, which helps them maintain a level of objectivity, which is essential during

“The decisions of a buyer’s agent are not swayed by emotion” the negotiating stage. Their judgments are driven by research and facts providing the buyer with advice and support. It is this knowledge that can help to guide investors to the next hotspot. Buyer’s agents strive to keep ahead of the game by using market trends and analysis to help identify key areas for investment potential. They are skilled in all areas of the property transaction, from initial research, to the bidding and negotiation, and settlement. However, it is imperative to check

their experience and qualifications. Before you part with your cash (a varied fee is charged) be sure to ask if they have any particular areas of expertise, and how well they know the market in the area you are looking to buy in. Check their overall knowledge, industry contacts and professional body membership, and ensure they are a licensed agent with professional indemnity insurance. Take time to understand their full service offering, as well as costs, upfront and ongoing. Speaking to past clients or obtaining testimonials can give insight. t was a blast from the past on Saturday as a couple of 1960s gems were put up for sale. “Imagine sitting by that pool with a pina colada,’’ Ian Nichols (Barry Plant Highton) told the crowd of 55 outside 8 Sussex Court, Grovedale. “That’s a drink from the ’60s, for those who don’t know.’’ An opening bid of $400,000 for the updated four-bedroom house kicked off a five-way contest that had, Nichols fielding 27 bids before bringing down the hammer at $492,000. The winners were a young couple from Melbourne. The 1960s were also the focus of Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) outside 16 Kirriemuir Court, Hamlyn Heights, where 70 onlookers gathered at the three-bedroom house on just over 660 square metres. The house has been renovated but retains architectural features from the era. “It’s swingin’, baby, yeah,’’ Grgic said in a steal from Austin Powers. A vendor bid of $450,000 got things going and three parties battled it out. The hammer came down 45 bids later at $578,000 in favour of a young local couple who plan to live at the property. The sale was the final leg of a quadrella for Grgic, who started his day at 6 Pinaroo Street, Newtown, a

A crowd of 65 saw the hammer fall in favour of a Melbourne investor at $447,000. The auctioneer’s third leg came home just around the corner at 71 Neil Street, Bell Post Hill, an original two-bedroom brick house. Investors from out of town won the

day with a final bid of $347,000. Wins were also notched by the Buxton Newtown office, with Tom Butters knocking down 108 Ballarat Road, Hamlyn Heights, for $335,000. The three-bedroom brick house was snapped up by a professional couple with business plans for the property. And Ben Riddle got away 6 Windmill Street, Newtown, for $866,000. Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
