Local delights Geelong wine lovers really are spoilt for choice with so many wineries so close to home. Grab your friends and indulge in a long lunch overlooking the vines at Saint Regis Winery, which stocks some fantastic local wines as well as their own. The octopus with chickpeas, yoghurt and capsicum and the beef rib served with potatoes, sour cream and chives are the dishes of the moment. The winery’s chardonnay is a winner on hot days as well as the Baie Rose. Too busy before Christmas? The Waurn Ponds winery will return with a new summer menu after the holidays. ■

reativity was back with a bang at this year’s Interior Design Excellence Awards as the winners ranged from the ultraglamorous to the simply stylish. Not surprisingly, Jackalope Hotel on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, which has been scooping up awards all year, was the overall 2017 winner for the Carr Design Group. The much sought-after designer of the year award went to SJB for its work on six different projects in Australia and overseas. “SJB’s balance of diversity and variety with consistency was an extraordinary achievement,” says IDEA judge William Smart of Smart Design Studio. On the home front, the use of colour continues to be popular with pink and electric blue the hot choices. Round shapes in the form of glass balls, and curved brackets, chairs and tables also appear frequently. It was a strong field of work from 533
with a contemporary charred wood and metal-clad section. Inside, Carr uses dramatic colours and lighting to create an otherworldly experience. Designer of the year SJB, with offices in Melbourne and Sydney, had 12 shortlisted projects and four high commendations. The Cleveland rooftop apartment by SJB is designed around a private garden in the sky. The apartment (highly commended residential single) is brought to life by several skylights and the living spaces are relaxed with views of the garden and Sydney. Elenberg Fraser’s cosmopolitan apartments at the Foy & Gibson precinct in Collingwood won the multi-residential award. Inspired by the New York meatpacking district and the suburb’s industrial heritage, the sophisticated interiors at 107 Cambridge comprise warehouse-style kitchens with brass tapware, grand bookshelves and aged timber floors.
At the other end of the scale was the highly commended, simple, sustainable Hill Plains cottage by Wolveridge architects. The long roof line and hardwood cladding of the one-bedroom guest cottage, about 100 kilometres from Melbourne, was inspired by old agricultural buildings nearby. The cottage has an eight-star rating and is off the grid. The biggest surprise winner was the low-budget Murdoch University Peel campus project by CODA Studio, which competed against some bigname firms. Other winners include: Biasol (emerging designer), Woods Bagot (sustainability), Andrew Burges Architects (residential single), Rob Backhouse of Hassell (gold medal), Arent & Pyke (residential decoration), Fiona Lynch (retail). When gently boiled in a sugar syrup, they also make a refreshing lemon cordial. Caring for your living cocktail herb garden is simple. n the dense urban jungle, light is a precious commodity. Shadow from buildings and large established trees are often beyond our control, so we are forced to adjust our botanical fantasies. The palette of shade-loving plants is always a work in progress, as we test out what will grow in a particular shaded space over time. To make this task harder, shady spaces are commonly also very dry, as it is difficult for rain to penetrate thick evergreen canopies. Despite these constraints, shade is a necessary respite ... but what interest can be produced in these shady spaces where very little can grow?
One of the best ways to start considering how to approach shady spaces with natives is by exploring Australian rainforests ... native rainforests give gardeners and designers useful clues about how Australian plants respond in different types of shady conditions. There is a staggering range of rainforests in Australia, occurring across many different climates.
Approaches to light Shady spaces can be approached in two ways: select plants suited to existing conditions or change the existing conditions to suit the plants. It may seem simple enough, but it
takes some finessing to bring them alive.
Contrast
This is an edited extract from Native:
Highly contrasting foliage textures can make the best use of available light in heavy shade. Impressions of black, green and gold are produced from reflections upon large, thick, boldly shaped glossy leaves. This can occur with the accents of long wavy blades of bird’s nest fern (Asplenium australasicum). The many different shades of green offer a dazzling colour palette: mossy, emerald, sea, sage, bottle and olive. More lively renderings can occur in open canopies, where dappled light

ell Post Hill has been one of this year’s hot spots on the Geelong property market. The hillside properties in this neighbourhood enjoy spacious blocks, and buyers are capitalising on the convenient location, with easy access to Melbourne Road and just a 10-minute drive to Geelong’s CBD and waterfront. This updated and extended family residence offers size, space and affordability in a quiet street. On a 579-square-metre block with a big backyard, this double-storey house has plenty of room for the kids to play in an established garden. Downstairs offers two spacious living areas; the main is just off the dining area and kitchen and features timber floorboards and a fireplace. It has sliding doors on either side, so it can be accessed from the entrance hall as well as the dining area.
A rumpus with cedar walls is at the back of the house and is a great room for the kids to take over. The nearby kitchen offers abundant bench space and plenty of storage, with scope to update further. The three minor bedrooms are downstairs, each with built-ins. The main is upstairs and includes an en suite and a walk-in robe. With views over Corio Bay, it’s the perfect parents’ retreat. A huge covered deck off the back of the house is ideal for entertaining and can be enjoyed all year round. Air-conditioning and ceiling fans keep the house cool in the summer months. There are leafy gardens out the back along with a double garage. There’s also a double carport, providing a great set-up for those with a boat or trailer.
This address is just a couple of turns from the Geelong Ring Road. Public transport and local shops are close by, while schools are also walking distance from here, including Kardinia International.

Auctions reported:
ree cupcakes and coffee were on offer for the crowd of 45 at 99 Isabella Street, Geelong West, on Saturday and there was a festive feel about the occasion. A young fella who had returned home from junior cricket was jumping up and down on the trampoline in the neighbouring front yard, and a pup was ordered by his owner to get back inside the gate, which he dutifully did. Good dog. Robert Kules (Barry Plant Geelong) was in charge, standing outside the three-bedroom weatherboard house on a block of just over 500 square metres. The house was clearly in need of some work, he reminded onlookers, but displayed solid bones and was located in the heart of Geelong West. “Think of the possibilities, of what this property could become,’’ he said. “Christmas is just around the corner, what a gift this would be.’’ After making prospective bidders aware that the event was a mortgagee auction, it was on. A young man quickly offered up a bid of $400,000. “That’s a little bit light, sir, but let’s get the ball rolling,’’ the auctioneer responded. Another man chimed in straight away with a $50,000 increment to

put the mark at $450,000. In the blink of an eye the mark was at $520,000 and the property was on the market. A young woman and another two men joined in, making the battle a five-way contest. The offers reached $600,000 and the next bid was an increment of just $2000. The young woman was still in the race, but clearly near her limit. In the end she was trumped by a local investor who took the prize with a final bid of $620,000. Kules’ colleague Lloyd Moulton
faced 60 onlookers at 11 Andrew Street, Newcomb, a three-bedroom weatherboard ripe for renovation. Three bidders fought it out, the prize eventually going to local firsthome buyers when Moulton brought the hammer down at $355,000. Bidders didn’t get a look in at 36 Logan Street, Hamlyn Heights. Shane King (Harcourts North Geelong) said a Melbourne investor secured the three-bedroom brick house on a block of more than 1000 square metres for $653,500 on Thursday, two days before auction.
