Sundowners Autumn may have arrived but you can keep summer alive just that little bit longer by indulging in your favourite cocktail overlooking the beach. The Front Beach Taphouse in Torquay is known for its selection of craft beers on tap and now they have added cocktails to the mix. Mister Mixer cocktails contain no artificial colours or flavours and are crafted using traditional recipes in small batches. They are then decanted into kegs for fresh cocktails poured from the tap. Popular varieties include the espresso martini, passionfruit caprioska and green apple mojito. Front Beach Taphouse, 16 The Esplanade, Torquay

here was a healthy crowd of around 45. The requisite chic dogs were there – two French bulldogs, a schnauzer and a husky pup. There was that whiff of big-city money. It could only mean one thing – an auction in Geelong West. Except it was Thursday. Lloyd Moulton (Barry Plant Geelong) and colleagues Sonya Kurul and Jay Roadley were showing people through 32 Elizabeth Street as the sun began to set. Why schedule an auction for 6.30pm on a Thursday? “You don’t have to compete with any other auctions,’’ Moulton says. “People don’t have to rush off to an open for inspection, it’s more relaxed.’’ That relaxed atmosphere may well be behind the terrific strike rate that

Barry Plant Geelong has had with its evening weekday auctions, albeit with a relatively low sample base. “If people are more relaxed they are more likely to spend time negotiating,’’ Moulton says. In the past few years the number of auctions in the Geelong property market has boomed, meaning both
agents and house hunters are often rushing, trying to fit in as many inspections and sales as they can. “Having an auction during the week is a chance to get in before the weekend,’’ Moulton says. The clock hit 6.30pm and Moulton, peering into the sun, talked up the property – a three/four-bedroom weatherboard house with two redbrick shopfronts on a block of around 313 square metres. “With some imagination and forward thinking, anything is possible here,’’ the auctioneer said. He posted a vendor bid of $650,000 and a man offered $660,000. The property was passed in at that point but no one rushed away. It was a Thursday evening, and a great time to start negotiations.

atalie Jarvis is the entrepreneur behind neon design studio Electric Confetti – a Melbourne-based small business and manufacturer of exceptionally popular decorative neon signs. Not surprisingly, the house Natalie and her partner Scott rent in Brighton is full of colour, fun and quirky details. Theirs is a joyful, vibrant 1960s home, where playful details reign supreme. The Jarvis family has been here for three years. Although they’re not able to make structural changes, Natalie has relished the chance to inject her distinctive, eclectic style at home; industrial furniture meets colourful textiles, vintage posters and, of course, Electric Confetti’s popular neon designs.
Having been brought up in an antique shop, Natalie has a special appreciation for vintage furniture – not just for the aesthetics, she says, but also the quality craftsmanship and value for money. Alongside treasured secondhand finds, Natalie’s favourite pieces include a plush upholstered armchair from Space to Create, a brilliant bold art print by Craig and Karl, the girls’ bunk beds by Playroom, and a custom-built cubby house by local company Castle and Cubby. For now, renting really suits the family lifestyle. “It’s actually a relief not having to make endless decisions on renovations,” Natalie says. “I favour furniture that can be used in multiple configurations, so it will hopefully fit the next house, too. For example, our sofa with the chaise, and the bunk beds, which work in various configurations, or can be separated entirely.” As a busy small-business owner and mum, Natalie is refreshingly relaxed when it comes to home decoration.

“I get a real creative outlet through work, so I really don’t mind the fact that we’re limited in what we can do here,” she says. “It’s a small space, and can be quite intense, not to mention messy, with three young kids, but it has a great aspect; we love being five minutes to work, kinder and day care, and it’s just a short stroll to the beach.” For now, the Jarvis family home is everything it needs to be.

olour trends come and go but some don’t always make a splash on the home front. This year everyone is talking about earthy shades, sage greens, warm neutrals and dashes of red. As the weather cools down, these colours are a natural go-to option to freshen up the home and they are making the leap from interior design magazines and websites to the living room. Grey-green is the new IT colour, according to some experts. Add in terracotta, russet, maroon and natural materials and you have a cosy space for the cooler months. The big paint companies are mostly opting for these autumnal colours, which are an easy fit in Australian homes. Global colour guru Pantone this year is plumping for ultra violet – an edgier choice – so it will be interesting to see if it transfers from the catwalk to the home. Of course, designers say if you stick with warm neutrals on your walls, you have the flexibility to play around with colour and give your rooms a fresh new feel. “Most home enthusiasts are comfortable with earthy shades as we see these natural colours in everyday living,” says Dulux colour-planning expert Andrea Lucena-Orr. These hues also work well with the greys and neutrals that are so popular now, and can add a beautiful ambience to any space, she says. “Autumn is a natural drawcard to go to those earthy tones: mustard, burgundy, earthy greens,” says interior designer Wendy Bergman of Bergman & Co. “I’m a big mustard lover but I like to use it more in furniture than decor.” She also likes to use pinks, fleshy shades, purples and injections of vibrant colours. Alex Hopkins of Studio Tate has been working with earthy tones for the past year. “The beauty of these colours as a trend is that they are unlikely to date quickly,” she says.
Stylist and trend forecaster Bree Leech says terracotta is very popular right now. “There’s a strong movement towards warm tones – which is quite cliched in autumn – but this year I really think people are starting to embrace those colours.” She has also noticed warm pink and darker tones, such as plum and russet, staging a comeback. “We’re getting a global look with tribal influences, even an Eastern influence with little bits of red.” So what’s the best way to work these earthy shades into the home? Introduce a beautiful dramatic essence into your study nook or home office with a terracotta colour, advises Lucena-Orr. “Oranges are known for their thought-provoking quality, so this is a perfect room to add a natural earthy colour and really make the space a welcoming one.” Bergman prefers a softer version of these colours. Timber is a great earthy colour palette within itself, the designer says. “The easiest way to change your home, whether seasonal or if you get bored, is with cushions, throws and glassware. They are a quick and easy way to change a style and mood in a space.”
Earthy tones, green and timber play a starring role in the Bergmandesigned restaurant Angus & Bon, which opened in Prahran in January. Designer Kate Challis, who has just finished a long renovation on her own home, says: “Earthy colours are being reinterpreted and revitalised by teaming them up with pastels, for example burgundy with fairy-floss
pink and chocolate browns with mint greens.” Hopkins believes rich tones create an atmosphere of comfort and a sense of depth in a space. Create an interior based on what you need and your environment, she says. “If you stick too closely to trends, they become irrelevant over time.” She teamed tan tones with fresh
white in a recent project at Green Gables in Mount Martha. Hopkins likes to create a story in her interiors. “Have a story rather than splashing colour on walls that you will be sick of in six months. Think in more sophisticated ways about how you can layer those textures and tones. “Gone are the typical feature-wall days, people are realising this trend is not a timeless option.” Conversely in small spaces, such as powder rooms, studies or nooks, you can experiment with colour and create a little “jewel box”. People are going back to the classic treatment of painting all rooms in a colour and leaving the skirtings, cornices, ceilings and doors in white, she says. “Using layers of similar tones together can create such a warm, inviting place,” stylist Leech explains. Investing in terracotta planter pots, repainting furniture or painting halfheight walls in a dining area brings colour into the home, she says. “Australians don’t necessarily love red or orange as a clean colour but when it’s dialled down and made more of a brown-based red and the orange is more pinkish we can embrace them. They almost become the Australian outback colours.”

Calacatta Viola marble. “It needed to be high-end, beautiful finishes that could then be rented out,” she says. “With that in mind, we went with a really industrial look.” The property is in a complex that occupies two industrial buildings on
Cleveland Street: the New York and Brooklyn Tobacco Factory, built in 1889, and the Demco Machinery Company Building, added in 1938. (The apartment, one of 38 in the three-level development, occupies the art deco section of the site.)
Macarounas chose a simple monochromatic palette to showcase the original architectural features of the project. The ceiling paint was extended on to the walls, its white, pigment-free composition and flat, non-refractive character enhancing the idea of a blank canvas that sits behind the furniture and objects. “It was a raw space – the project was about coming in and creating a property that really reflected its past and making the art deco a contemporary style throughout.” Sheer, full-height curtains soften the overall scheme, while the black wall sconces and pendant lights from Cult Furniture accentuate the

industrial nature of the building. Large, black-and-white images from Amsterdam-based photographer Elmar Dam dominate the space. These include a floor lamp in the living room that was originally used on a French film set in the 1940s, the Kofod Larsen shell chair in the main bedroom, and the Scandinavian sideboard – a one-of-a-kind prototype piece.

A bid of $350,000 emerged from the crowd. “That is cheap when you take into account what we’ve just sold,’’ Kules said. “We’ve got the latest comparable right next door.’’ Four other parties got involved and the mark built steadily. obert Kules (Barry Plant Geelong) battled the heat and a tummy bug on Saturday but still managed to entertain the crowd with some clever lines. “Putting money into property is better than Bitcoin,’’ he told the 50 onlookers outside 12 Roma Street, Bell Park. The property in question was a onebedroom dwelling on a block of around 651 square metres, returning the owners $165 per week in rent. It was the land the bidders were there for. A man called out $250,000 to open proceedings. “Oh, that hurts,’’ Kules said. “You wanted a start,’’ the man replied. “OK, I’ll take your $250,000,’’ the auctioneer responded, and soon another man had joined in and the two parties fought it out. After a total of 15 bids the man who cheekily kicked things off at $250,000 had the prize, Kules bringing the hammer down in his favour at $380,000. The winners were an older couple who have bought the property as an investment. They stuck around, because Kules moved straight onto his next auction; it was the property next door – No.10 Roma Street. “Most of the people who grow up in this area don’t want to leave,’’ the
the original bidder went for a knockout blow, going up to $450,000. “That’s good, strong bidding, sir,’’ Kules said. Not strong enough, though, as the other parties kept sniffing around. In the end, after a total of 15 bids (the same as No.12), the hammer fell at $485,000. The winner was a young man from Melbourne who has plans to eventually relocate to the property. Out at 100 Hendy Street, Corio, listing agent Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) ushered the 35 onlookers into the generous shade of the big frontyard tree as his colleague Shane King prepared to put the four-bedroom brick house up for sale. “A corner site, a large house and big potential, that’s a real estate trifecta right there,’’ King said. The comfort of the shade appeared to have made prospective bidders a
bit too comfortable as King struggled to prompt an opening bid. Eventually a man offered $270,000, which King immediately met with a vendor bid of $290,000. After he original bidder suggested $295,000, another party then popped up and the fight was on. At $305,000 the first bidder requested a $2000 rise. King accepted and told the other party they could have the same opportunity. They took it. The mark kept rising, sometimes in increments of $2000, sometimes $1000. Towards the end the original bidder dropped his increments to $500 and it seemed his fight was coming to an end. It was. The hammer dropped soon after, following a total of 30 bids, at $347,000 to a local investor. Download the Domain app to search in Geelong DOM A IN GEELONG

esidents of this four-bedroom family home will be within strolling distance of Geelong Botanic Gardens – just one of many proximity perks that come with the property. There’s also the waterfront and Garden Street’s shops and cafes that can be reached on foot within five minutes, with the CBD a little further up the road. Buyers with teenagers will be pleased to know Geelong High School is also fiveminutes away. Public transport is close by too, with buses stopping right on Myers Street. A weatherboard, cream-andburgundy Californian bungalow, 297 Myers Street has been in the same family for more than 35 years. It had an update a little while ago, which saw a first floor with two bedrooms added, but it’s ready for another renovation once its new owners have settled.
A central passageway through the middle divides a formal lounge that opens to a dining area from two bedrooms on the other side of the hall. Several period features have been retained in this part of the house, such as wide hardwood floors, high skirting boards and leadlight windows. The dining room has a corner heater, which is framed by an original mantelpiece. Further along, the kitchen adjoins the dining room. Timber cabinetry and exposed brick lend a country brand of charm to this room. The bathroom and a laundry sit opposite. The hallway concludes with a large, tiled rumpus area with sliding doors that lead to sheltered paving out the back. There’s a shed in the rear garden, which also has lawn and plenty of potential for green thumbs. Out the front of the property, there is off-street parking for one car. Up on the first floor addition, there
are two loft-style bedrooms, one that includes an attic space that provides extra storage. For buyers seeking a centrally situated property that they can make their own, this one has plenty of potential.
