For someone who looks like they were made for the screen, it is hard to believe Rodger Corser never set out to become an actor. Rather, as he tells Jane Rocca in this week’s cover story, he undertook a media studies degree with ambitions to work behind the scenes. Corser, of course, eventually found his way to the stage and then TV and we are all the richer for it. And while the Doctor Doctor star couldn’t resist his latest acting role in season two of Five Bedrooms, (on Paramount+ Australia), he tells Jane that jumping back into the producer’s chair is on the cards.  ●

nterior stylist, philanthropist, businesswoman: Tina Nettlefold says her planets aligned when she turned 60. Now she creates bespoke homewares and has launched a YouTube channel. “Something happened when I turned 60 last year. I realised I have all this energy and needed to channel it somewhere,” says Nettlefold, who started her career in advertising. After 15 years as a stay-at-home mum raising her three sons, she opened her interior styling business in 2014. She’s been busily curating homes for highend clients ever since. “I’m not the sort of person who sits around and goes to lunch every day; I want more from life,” Nettlefold says. “My husband [former head of Sports Australia, Barclay Nettlefold] is … still working, so I went on this new creative adventure because I have always had a philanthropic dream and wanted to make it happen.” Nettlefold is known for bringing a luxury chic to her styling work, but now she’s all about expanding her message beyond that. Via her T.House brand, Nettlefold has teamed with Eat Up – a charity that feeds needy kids who turn up to school without lunches. She doesn’t shy away from getting in on the action, hosting sandwich-making events with celebrity friends and social media influencers to get involved all in the name of a good cause. She’s also created a stylish apron for adults and kids to help raise money for the charity, and more homewares, such as lunch boxes, artisan vases and ceramic platters, are on the way. She also has a candle and room fragrances in the works. Aligning with Eat Up means Nettlefold can shine a light on hungry kids in Australia. One in eight children attends school without a packed lunch. “I want to create some noise, it’s not just about creating products,” she says. “People need to pay attention to the bigger issue. “I know there are lots of social issues at stake when it comes to child hunger, but we want to make the problem known. It’s about getting food in these kids’ tummies so they can concentrate in school and not be in the same cycle as their parents.” Nettlefold is all about building her profile via her YouTube channel, too – the platform makes perfect sense for someone who already has a loyal Instagram following. It’s there she posts daily aspirational photos and videos on how to choose a floor rug, how to embrace colour when it comes to lighting and where to find collectable glassware for your next dinner party.  ● ● eatup.org.au

COVER STORY Actor Rodger Corser tells us about his new Five Bedrooms role and his late start in the industry.

F

or three-time Gold Logienominated actor Rodger Corser joining the cast of comedy-drama Five Bedrooms, filmed in Malvern, was a no-brainer. Part of the attraction of joining the TV show’s second season – which follows five housemates, who, after bonding at a wedding, decide to buy a house together – was the opportunity to reunite with Australian actress Kat Stewart. Corser has worked with Stewart many times before, including in 2005 when filming Last Man Standing and in 2008 as cop Steve Owen in Underbelly. He has also worked with her husband David Whiteley in The Doctor Blake Mysteries. In Five Bedrooms, Corser plays Stuart, the ex-husband of Stewart’s character Liz. The show follows their break-up and the consequences of what happens when couples can’t agree on the right time to start a family.

role in Rent in 1998 that gave him a taste of the spotlight and led him to Beastmaster in 2000 and Water Rats in 2001. He’s most adored for playing lead character and heart surgeon Dr Hugh Knight in Doctor Doctor – which just wrapped up after five seasons – and hopes to woo his fans in Five Bedrooms. “I guess you could say I was in the camp of late bloomers as far as acting went,” Corser says. “There is no six-step plan to getting where you are in this business. There’s no guarantee even after going to drama school that it will lead to work. “A lot of parents stop and ask me about what their kids should do to get into acting. I always say there’s no one pathway – there certainly wasn’t for me.” Corser lives in Sydney with his wife Renae Berry and their three young children. It’s there you’ll find a guitar he used to play with

it’s a conversation that will change your life, and my character is all about that. I’ve seen friends and family put off having kids, and sometimes you have to jump in and find your way through it,” Corser says. A more than 20-year career on our screens is an achievement he’s proud of but admits the hustle is part of his daily grind. “People see you pop up in more than one show on TV and don’t realise how much time has elapsed between them. Sometimes there are 73 working weeks between shoot days,” he says. “But I also realise I have been more fortunate than others. It’s a tough industry to get into and maintain a place. And as you get older, there are the pressures of family added too. “The stop-start impact of the pandemic on one’s career can be huge. A lot of friends and colleagues certainly felt undervalued and not seen by not qualifying for any

“Kat is so bloody good at her job as an actor,” says Corser, best known for his roles in Doctor Doctor and Underbelly. “I remember on set filming Underbelly and being blown away by her performances as Roberta. The way she would look at Carl – it’s hard to get that look out of your head. I can still see that face. There’s a reason why she has always been at the forefront of screen talent in this country,” he says. He was supposed to only be in the second series of Five Bedrooms for a few episodes, but the pandemic had other plans. “The pandemic worked in favour of my character because when filming went into hiatus for the show last March, they had to pivot and brought my character back. That was a good thing for me,” he says. Corser never planned a career in acting and always thought he’d put his Deakin University Media Studies degree to use behind the scenes. But it was a lead theatre

his rock band in Melbourne in his teens and early 20s – Tender Prey and Stone the Crows – before he made the switch to acting. And yes, he still likes to bring it out and play on occasion. “The kids like to pick up the guitar and give it a bash,” he says. “I don’t mind picking it up from time to time, but I leave music to those who do it better.” Corser also has a fourth child, Zipporah, 19, with former partner Christine Anu. In Five Bedrooms, the father-of-four plays a character who grapples with the idea of having children and finding the right time. “There is never a perfect time for a child to come along into your life, and Five Bedrooms taps into that,” Corser says. “There is always going to be compromise involved or something you will have to put off and change in life. Regardless of how great your job is or whatever is going on professionally and personally in your life,

government help last year and really did it tough,” he says. In the final season of Doctor Doctor, Corser took on the role of producer and started thinking he’d like to do more. “I was lucky enough to step into associate producer on Doctor Doctor for a few seasons and then as producer,” he says. “I am looking to move into that and be there from the ground up. I’m all about pitching my ideas and getting something off the ground. “I also feel there is a voracious appetite for content right now, and I’d like to think Australian productions can be part of that. That’s definitely a goal for me, and I would love to see it come full circle – a chance to do what I went to university for all those years ago.” ● FIVE BEDROOMS \ Season two streams exclusively on Paramount+ Australia on August 11.

Escape to the city

Stretching across 6.5 hectares in a delightfully bushy bend of the Yarra River sits the towering Abbotsford Convent and, to its north and east, the Collingwood Children’s Farm. As you walk through the gardens in winter, it feels of another time, where the spire of its grand structure seems both at odds with, and entirely at home in, the blend of introduced tree species and grey-green Australian bush. The convent is the country’s largest multi-arts precinct, with 11 historic buildings, cafes, galleries, artist studios and expansive green spaces. Check out the brilliant Indigenous Sound Trail walking tour. Ngulu-Nganjin (Our Voice) features Wurundjeri elders, musicians and artists telling the story of the traditional-owners’ history and heritage. The Collingwood Children’s Farm is just next door, which you can access by walking through the convent, or by winding along the Yarra River around the outside.

I stop and chat with Olivia, 21, who is taking her schmoodle Lola on her daily walk. She says it’s just like being in the bush.

With an extensive range of farm animals, including goats, sheep, horses, ducks, pigs, chickens, guinea pigs and even peacocks roaming about the fields, it feels as if you’re out in the country.

WHO WILL YOU FIND THERE?

The Abbotsford Convent garden is dotted with families and picnickers enjoying its lush expanse. With a choice of four eateries around the precinct, including Cam’s Kiosk, the Convent Bakery, Lentil as Anything, and Kappaya it is the perfect spot to take in the fresh air and a picnic or a leisurely stroll with a pastry and coffee in hand. The atmosphere is charming, and as you meander through the convent towards the Children’s Farm you’ll notice the joyful commotion of kids chatting excitedly about ponies, sheep and other farm animals. It is the combination of farm animals, the lush green paddocks and the bush behind them which makes you feel like you could be hours away from the city, despite being just four kilometres away.

Alleviating ATAR stress Supporting the mental health of students under pressure is critical. Wo r d s

EFFIE MANN

XAVIER ARNAU

T

he correlation between high performance and mental health has been brought into sharp focus with tennis champ Naomi Osaka and American gymnast Simone Biles joining a growing list of professional athletes speaking out about the difficulties of maintaining a healthy balance. It’s a battle that mind coach Emma Murray says transcends the sporting arena. She compares the pressure on senior school students to that of the athletes and professionals she coaches. “I look at an elite athlete, and they face high pressure and high expectations, but we know they do, so we put things in place to help,” she says. “We manage their schedule; we give them a lot of time out; we give them recovery sessions and massage.” Students, however, can miss out. Instead of saying it’s “just school”, Murray says parents and educators need to respect the pressures their teens are under and offer adequate support “because these kids are burnt out”. Murray has adapted her High-Performance Mindfulness program for secondary students, with an online platform providing tools and strategies to achieve school success while managing the associated stress and anxiety in a healthy way. The program, rolled out by five Victorian schools at the start of 2021, is one of the ways educators are working with families to alleviate the stress over the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank), as student well-being takes centre stage. One early adopter is Brighton Grammar, where Murray’s son was a student. Headmaster Ross Featherston says the response so far has been positive: “Uptake from the students has been really pleasing. Kids are engaging with it in a meaningful way, so it’s a promising start.” The program dovetails with Brighton Grammar’s existing mindfulness initiative and

is complementary to many other working structures the school has developed to ensure high achievement isn’t to the detriment of student mental health. “A little bit of pressure can be a good thing because it can motivate kids,” Featherston says. “But, obviously, the danger is when it becomes too much, and they start to worry, start to get anxious.” Featherston says parents, teachers and students must all “sing from the same hymn sheet”, so the school runs a year 12 “parent engagement program”, connecting current school parents with past parents and students for advice, updates through the VCE co-ordinator, and regular teacher check-ins.

Nakkita Egan, head of students at Catholic girls’ school St Columba’s College, says home life can greatly impact students’ success and stress levels. Egan suggests setting aside regular time to spend together as a family, and stick to a good routine that includes a healthy diet, exercise and lots of sleep. This has a calming influence and can help keep stress levels low. “Helping students to do some of the things they love and supporting them to practice self-care is vital,” she says. Egan adds that focusing solely on maximising an ATAR score can mean the skill and joy of learning are lost – “and when learning becomes a chore, the stress sets in!”  ●

Set in the curve of Howe Crescent, one of South Melbourne’s most prestigious locations, this free-standing home is an excellent example of a majestically elegant period of Melbourne’s history. The house, set on about 529 square metres of land, is immaculately presented. The period features are there in abundance and have been well cared for. The formal lounge at the front of the home, for example, is wonderfully ornate. A magnificent plaster arch frames the bay window with ornate pillars and richly decorated curve. The ceiling is curved and embellished with wonderful cornice and plaster details. The marble fireplace is equally ornate. Next to this living room is a gracious formal dining room. At the rear, a contemporary living area is open and light. Pine flooring which matches the original section is used here, and a marble open fireplace carries the Victorian era into the modern section. The white kitchen is well-equipped for everyday meals as well as entertaining. It has Miele and Smeg appliances and excellent storage. Bifold doors open the contemporary living, dining and kitchen area to the rear deck and the paved and landscaped garden. At the bottom of the garden, the stables have been converted to a three-car garage and an excellent studio or self-contained apartment with a kitchen on the ground floor and, upstairs, an en suite and bedroom. On the first floor of the main house are four bedrooms and two bathrooms. The main bedroom has a marble open fireplace, a stylish en suite and balcony. Two of the other
