For many of us the rolling lockdowns and restrictions on travel over the past 18 months have forced us to look for joy in our own backyards. We’ve discovered new walking tracks, found joy in kicking a footy at the local park and taken comfort in a daily trip to our local cafe for a takeaway coffee and a quick chat with a friendly barista. In this week’s cover story, Luke Dennehy speaks to some prominent Melburnians, from Archie Thompson and Andy Lee to Libbi Gorr and Alicia Loxley, about the secret Melbourne spots where they like to relax and recharge.  ●

ith international borders closed, interstate travel an uncertain proposition and lockdowns forcing us to stay close to home, seeking out those secret spots in Melbourne that bring us joy, solace and hope have become more important than ever before. We spoke to a handful of prominent Melburnians who shared their secret city locations – the places that invigorate them and make them feel at home – from local cafes and walking tracks to their favourite sporting grounds and even a very specific park bench with magic views of our great city. BRIGHTON

During the brutal Melbourne lockdowns, ABC Radio Melbourne weekend breakfast host Libbi Gore found sanctuary in her favourite secret spot, on the beach at the end of North Road, Brighton. In her five-kilometre range, a solo walk along the boardwalk whenever she could helped her through the tough times, something many Melburnians can relate to. “It’s spacious, it’s beautiful, and it’s a walk close to home, and it positions me next to sand and water and freedom,” she says. “That spot, at a beautiful sunset, it puts everything into perspective.” The stunning location also reminds Libbi of her former home in Sydney, where she spent a large amount of her adult life. “I discovered it about four or five years ago, and it was the closest thing I could find to North Bondi, where I lived forever,” she says. Having grown up away from the water, Libbi now loves and appreciates the beach. “I grew up in a more leafy part of Melbourne; my childhood was not one of beaches but hot, stinky days where we would swim in my cousins’ pool and get in trouble if a bobby pin fell into the pool in case it went into the filter,” she says. “So, gravitating to the beach instead of the leaves has been not so much a life-changing thing but a real shift in my enjoyment of being outside.”

As the winter sun shines down on Gosch’s Paddock in Melbourne’s sporting precinct, there is a fair chance you might find Andy Lee having some downtime. Andy has spent many an hour on the footy oval, with AAMI Stadium in the background. “It does feel like a secret spot because there are never many people around,” he says. “Bec (his partner) and I will often wander across with some yoga mats or an AFL footy as it is our closest park to home. “It’s a beauty.” Andy also has personal training sessions at Gosch’s Paddock and has kicked the footy there with his main sparring partner, Hamish Blake. “I was down there with Hamish once and his boy Sonny, and we were playing footy,” he says. “I had my Carlton top on and Hamish and Sonny had their Melbourne tops on, and a photographer came out thinking we were players,” he says. “When they realised we weren’t, they got back into their car quickly.” Another secret spot for Andy, just up the road, is Dimitri’s Feast cafe in Swan Street, Richmond. His friend Mick Molloy is also a regular there. Away from Gosch’s Paddock, Andy is back on Channel 9 hosting the new television game show The Hundred.

ARCHIE THOMPSON

ARCHIE THOMPSON \ COE & COE, YARRAVILLE

For former Australian soccer champion Archie Thompson, the cafe Coe & Coe in Wembly Avenue, Yarraville, is more than just a place to get a good cup of coffee. The Coe & Coe chain of cafes was started in Port Melbourne by his ex-Melbourne Victory teammate and great friend Nathan Coe, at the height of the club’s success last decade. For Archie, it was a place he would go to get a morning coffee before training, including the years of 2014 and 2015, when Melbourne Victory won the A-League Premiership. So, every time he steps into his secret spot, it brings back wonderful memories. “Nathan opened the cafe with his brother in Port Melbourne, and it was a great time for us all; we used to chill and hang out before training every day,” he says. “It brings back great memories, and I’m so glad there is also now a Coe & Coe in Yarraville.” Archie only recently moved to the area, and says he is loving it.

When Alicia Loxley left Melbourne for Perth for work aged 21, she didn’t realise how special the place was. But moving back home at 26, the Nine News presenter soon discovered a real love for her home city. That includes her secret spot, a park bench at the top of Studley Park, off Studley Park Road in Kew. “I think that spot represents everything I love about where I live,” she says. “Obviously, it has breathtaking views of the city, and when I run past that bench, it really takes you by surprise.

“The first time I saw it, I couldn’t quite believe just how amazing the view is. “It’s also a really steep hill to run up, so when you get there, it’s nice to have the park bench there as well,” she laughs. Overlooking the Collingwood Children’s Farm and the suburbs of Abbotsford, Fitzroy and Collingwood, the park bench is a beautiful place to just take our city in, she says. Alicia has also been there on New Year’s Eve with her family. “We have watched the New Year’s Eve fireworks a couple of times; it’s just one of those iconic Melbourne spots.” PETER ALEXANDER \ THE STABLES CAFE

All his life Peter Alexander has had a dog by his side. So, it’s imperative that when the fashion designer goes out for a coffee, his sausage dog, Betty, comes along. His secret spot is the beautiful The Stables of Como Cafe, in the Como Gardens in South Yarra. “I like the whole casualness of it,” he says. ”I’m quite casual myself, and the fact you can bring your dog and then go for a walk in the garden; it’s very Melbourne. “It’s unpretentious, and it’s such a nice little cafe, and the staff are great. “I walk away always feeling satisfied, and that’s a nice feeling to have.” Peter remembers taking the great Barry Humphries to his secret spot. “He wanted to go somewhere in Melbourne that he had never been before, and he thought it was just wonderful,” he says. After a trip to The Stables, you might then find Peter at Haigh’s Chocolates in Toorak, another favourite secret spot of his.  ●

EDUCATION & INNOVATION

Selecting the right primary school

T

he first year of school is an exciting and emotional time for parents as much as their kids. After all, prep sets the tone for a student’s lifelong learning journey, says Janine Hogan, the head of Joigny junior school at Sacré Cœur. “They have been learning voraciously since they were born, but it is in their first years at school that each student begins to develop [their] conscious sense of self as a learner,” Hogan says. There’s a lot going on in your little one’s brain during this time, too, says Laurien Beane, early childhood course co-ordinator at Australian Catholic University. “Young children entering prep are on a steep learning curve,” she says. “[They] develop important positive dispositions for learning, such as curiosity and creativity.” Not only are they making huge strides physically and cognitively, they’re working on more subtle soft skills, such as teamwork and making friends. So, how do parents choose the right primary school, one that makes the most of this important educational milestone? Here are a few things for families to keep in mind. PLAN A VISIT

It’s a no-brainer; there’s no better way to know whether a primary school is right for your child than to see the school for yourself. Tours are great opportunities to observe children and teachers in their environment and to ask questions. “Many schools provide an opportunity to engage with students as tour guides, which can be helpful in gathering information and getting a feel for the tone and culture of the school community,” says Jim Miles, the executive director of Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS). “If possible, parents should also speak to current families about their experience of the school and its community,” Miles says. A WARM AND WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT

While visiting, ask questions about how the school welcomes its youngest students, as well as their families. The best primary schools are quick to promote warm relationships between children,

L E A R N I N G T H R O U G H PL AY

families and educators, which makes children feel safe and contributes to their learning. “If students feel safe and cared for, they will learn more effectively and be more likely to develop as confident and happy young people,” says Miles. At Sacré Cœur’s Joigny junior school, for example, incoming prep students are paired with a year 5 “buddy”, an older student who plays, reads and spends time with them. “It is often seeing their buddy that the preps look forward to most when they return for their second visit the following week,” says Hogan. “What we want to establish first and foremost at Joigny is a sense in each of them that school is their place,” she says. “As they build relationships with their teachers and peers, we want them to develop a deep sense of being cared for and caring about others.” PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Partnerships between the school and parents create a better, more inclusive learning environment for children. And it’s one of the most important questions you can ask schools, according to Beane. “How do you involve the children, families and communities in planning the curricula and extracurricular opportunities provided by the school?”

WILL YOUR CHILD HAVE FUN?

Academics aren’t everything, especially in the early years. Do you have a gut feeling that your child will have fun at a particular school? Research has found that children who like school when they are young have better educational outcomes. One UK study determined that children who enjoyed school at age six scored an average 29 points higher on their VCE-equivalent qualifications in secondary school. “School enjoyment is one of the largest factors in lifelong success,” says Beane. It’s another reason why a school visit is so important. If it seems like the children are having fun, that’s probably a sign your child will, too. “Are there obvious signs and signals around the school that the children enjoy learning, such as flyers for community events, or processes the children have in place for playtime during breaks, or before and after school?” says Beane. At Joigny, play is an essential part of learning. “As we introduce children to early literacy and numeracy skills, we use music, dance, singing, tactile equipment and movement to teach concepts and provide practice in skills,” says Hogan. “If children love the stories, they learn to read. If numbers solve problems, they will learn to add.” ● KATE STANTON

omes in Melbourne’s most elite bayside suburb, Brighton, regularly set new benchmarks in luxury and style. However, Fifty Two Black, a new development of just five residences in the coveted Church Street precinct, is on track to elevate Brighton living to an entirely new realm. In an Australian first, each residence at Fifty Two Black will be exclusively furnished in Ralph Lauren Home when completed early next year.

LI Z M c L AC H L A N

Effortlessly chic Designed to appeal to the most discerning of global citizens, everything from bathrobes and framed art to fine china and crystal will be hand-selected and waiting for owners on their arrival. The high-end development comprises four three-bedroom homes across two levels crowned by a fullfloor penthouse, with prices ranging from $5 million to $9 million. The residences range from 293 to 490 square metres in total and feature private lift entries, 3.3-metrehigh ceilings, butler’s pantries and expansive outdoor areas of more than 200 square metres. In a mark of the project’s opulence, 10 different types of marble sourced from Italy, Spain and Africa will be used in each home. Michael Pesochinsky, president of

developer PB&Co, says they “wanted to create homes that celebrated luxury living at its finest”. The Melbourne-based development firm has selected a trio of globallyrenowned architects and designers to ensure every aspect of living at Fifty Two Black is carefully considered. Acclaimed Australian architect Nicolas Day is leading the architecture, in association with New York firm Gregory Tuck, while interiors are designed by New Yorkbased Meg Sharpe. Tuck says a close collaboration with Sharpe - who has been recognised as one of the top 100 designers in the world by Elle Decor - was key to creating a cohesive design. “From the outset of the design phases, we focused on how best to

marry the architecture with the interior design. If one is the body, the other is the clothes, and all of the unique personalisation individuals bring to their self-expression,” he says. “One without the other would be meaningless.” Drawing on the relaxed sophistication of Brighton, Sharpe says the concept for the interior spaces is effortless elegance. “The exceptional quality of the materials and furniture will create a sumptuous backdrop for stylish living,” she says. Each of the residences will reflect a unique take on the rich heritage and enduring elegance of Ralph Lauren Home, evident in the furniture, fine china, crystal, and luxe bed and bath linens that will complete the interiors. Buyers will be able to select from three distinct interior looks. These include a classic sensibility with darker wood tones and heavier textures, a contemporary look with clean lines, and a relaxed vibe with soft, plush neutrals. Pesochinsky says initial conversations with buyers have been incredibly positive.  ● Agent: 1300 275 349
