I’ve often wondered why talent and fame seems to run in families – think of the Hemsworths, Kylie and Danni, the Daddos, Nicole and Antonia Kidman. And what about the Curry brothers – Bernard (Wentworth, Home and Away), Stephen, (The Castle, The Cup) and Andrew (Neighbours)? Is it all in the genes or is there more to it? In this week’s cover story, Luke Dennehy speaks to Wentworth star Bernard Curry about how he and his brothers caught the “acting bug”, and the rural property that keeps the family close.  ●

New Sophie Centre celebrates 21st century education at Sacré Cœur Set to open in Term 4, the St Madeleine Sophie Barat Centre, the new STEAM learning centre located in the heart of Sacré Cœur is more than a new building, it’s a transformative space that celebrates the school’s commitment to education in science, technology, mathematics and creative arts. Spanning four levels, the building known affectionately as the Sophie Centre - naturally flows into the existing buildings of Sacré Cœur. Connectivity and flow are at the core of the design of this modern, light-filled space where students can traverse the campus at multiple levels. Students will move seamlessly between the multi-level library, science and technology laboratories, an amphitheatre, art studios, breakout and outdoor learning spaces. “It will change how the students and teachers interact,” says architect Rich Austin from Hede Architects. By creating numerous opportunities for formal and informal learning, both in and out of the classroom, students will naturally gravitate towards the many flexible areas to connect with teachers and classmates.

This cross-curricular approach is an extension of the historic Sacré Cœur ethos, which has always strived to create well-rounded, future-ready young women, according to principal Adelina Melia-Douvos. “These interdisciplinary spaces capture the essence of contemporary education by dismantling barriers between old and new ways of teaching and embracing the future,” says Ms Melia-Douvos. “A future in which curiosity, creativity, problemsolving, collaboration, civicmindedness and compassion will be key to learning.” Learning also extends outside of the Sophie Centre – with three inspiring new playground spaces for Joigny, the Junior School.

S c ie n c e , M a th s & C re a ti v e A rt s S c h o l a rs h ip s f o r 2022 & 2023

Designed in consultation with staff and students, these playgrounds will offer something for both younger and older students.

“These interdisciplinary spaces capture the essence of contemporary education by dismantling barriers between old and new ways of teaching and embracing the future.” Play has been proven to hold a crucial role in a child’s development, notes Janine Hogan, Head of Joigny. “The playground is going to be a wonderful asset for the girls,” she says. “It’s in such close proximity to where the indoor learning spaces are. And

so there’s a natural progression for them to take their learning out onto the playground, to continue to develop their curiosity and their involvement in nature and to bring this to their classroom learning.”

There’s no doubt that the Sophie Centre offers a truly 21st century approach to education for the young women at Sacré Cœur.

Is your daughter passionate about art and design? Does she love science or mathematics? To celebrate our new STEAM learning centre, at Sacré Cœur we’re offering unique scholarships in Science, Mathematics, and Creative Arts for Years 8 and 9. We also offer Access Scholarships to provide an opportunity for students to pursue their passion for Science, Mathematics or Creative Arts, regardless of financial circumstances. At Sacre Coeur, your daughter’s future is bright.

he became famous for marrying a Beatle, but before Linda McCartney met Paul, she snapped a generation of rock stars. Behind the lens, she captured the magic of the ’60s and took candid shots of future stars such as Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin and, of course, the Beatles themselves. Those famous faces will be one of the big attractions of Linda McCartney: Retrospective, the show that will headline the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. It’s a win for the city, the only place in Australia to host the show. “We have photographs of some of the most important musicians of our time – at a time when music changed the world, and the world was changed by music,” says the artistic director, Fiona Sweet. Linda Eastman was an awardwinning photographer before she met the Beatles. Born in New York in 1941, she became the first woman to shoot a Rolling Stone cover – a portrait of Eric Clapton. While working as an editorial assistant at Town & Country magazine in 1966, she picked up an unwanted invitation to a Rolling Stones party. Taking her camera along, her photos of the unguarded rockers on a boat on the Hudson River became instant classics. In 1967, she was voted US female photographer of the year and sent to London to photograph the Beatles – and the rest, as they say, is history. She photographed many iconic stars, including The Doors, The Animals, Bob Dylan and The Beach Boys. She documented the musical and cultural revolution of the ’60s,

photographing Jimi Hendrix yawning, Janis Joplin backstage with a whiskey bottle, Aretha Franklin upset and the launch of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The exhibition will feature more than 200 of McCartney’s works, including poignant and intimate photos of her own family and 24 Australian images that have never been shown publicly before. The McCartney family toured here with Wings (Paul’s later band, in which Linda was a keyboardist) in 1975. This retrospective collection was curated by Paul and his daughters, Mary and Stella McCartney, who found the Australian images in the family archives. The biennale has 200 different shows in various historic buildings, laneways and cafes.  ● BALLARAT INTERNATIONAL FOTO BIENNALE \ 28 August-24 October ● ballaratfoto.org

A TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW COVER STORY So, what’s next for Melbourne actor Bernard Curry as

the final series of prison drama Wentworth is about to hit our screens?

I

t’s hard to believe that Bernard Curry, now aged 47, has been in the public eye since he was 16. Ever since his first role in the miniseries Snowy, Bernard, along with his brothers Stephen and Andrew, has been a fixture on the stage and screen in Australia. The Curry brothers started their craft at the famous Track Youth Theatre in the 1980s. At that time, the theatre was called the Toorak Players and was based in Glen Iris, where it operates to this day. Their parents used to take them to the acting classes on a Sunday and Monday night, and they loved it from day one. While some of their mates might have been out kicking the footy, the Curry brothers couldn’t wait to get on stage. “There were kids’ workshops and when you got old enough, like aged 13 or 14, you graduated to more serious workshops and theatre sports,” Bernard says. “Then, as part of that, we did plays and end-ofyear performances and that’s where we learnt everything and I got the acting bug. Little did a young Bernard know that, more than 30 years later, he would be still working and making a living out of something that was just a bit of fun when he was growing up. Most recently, Bernard has starred in the gritty and ground-breaking prison drama, Foxtel’s Wentworth, as corrections officer Jake Stewart. Filming of the final series has wrapped up and goes to air later this month. He has been in the role since 2016, when he and his wife Sonya packed up their life in Los Angeles and moved back to Melbourne. They have two boys, Fox, 11, and Banjo, 9. Bernard is not afraid to say he is proud of his achievements in such a fickle and tough industry. “I started earning money as an actor at 16 years of age,” he says. ”Touch wood and everything, but somehow I’ve managed to make it a career that I can

look after my family and myself and I feel very blessed by that. “I also feel a sense of pride because it’s not easy. Every day when I wake up and I get to go to a film or TV set is a good day, and I genuinely mean that.” He is right to say it is never easy. As filming started on the final season of Wentworth early last year in an old TAFE college in Williamstown that had been converted into a prison, the show had an interruption that no one in the world saw coming – the COVID-19 pandemic. The producers, Fremantle Australia, had to shut down production for a couple of months before resuming with strict, government-approved COVID-19 protocols as Victoria went in and out of lockdown. At the time, the only other drama production that was continuing to work in Melbourne was Neighbours. The challenges the cast faced made this series even more special for Bernard and his castmates, who made a pact on Zoom last year to put their hearts and souls into finishing on a high despite what was going on with the pandemic. “Once we started back we managed to get through about 12 weeks of filming without one case or one problem or issue,” he says. “We got tested weekly and we were able to continue on to make the final season, and we’ve got something that we can all be proud of. “There were some sacrifices made along the way, some re-written scenes that had to be slightly tweaked, but by and large I think if you watch this season you won’t really notice any difference when it comes to the drama.” Wentworth is all over now but for Bernard it was a life-changing role. Not only did it make him move his family back home to Australia, but the fact he has worked with a predominately female cast – including Sigrid Thornton, Pamela Rabe, Tammy McIntosh, Kate

“I feel like I have become a much better actor from the experience of working on ‘Wentworth’.”

Atkinson, Jacqueline Brennan and Leah Purcell – playing strong female characters has made the experience even better. “To be considered a peer of theirs, as an actor when you are put in that kind of situation you have no choice to step up to that level,” he says. “I feel like I have become a much better actor from the experience of working on Wentworth.” One of the other bonuses of working on the series and returning to Australia is spending more time at a country shack and land near Daylesford that has been in the Curry family for decades. It is where I caught up with Bernard just before he was set for a random gig, as one of the housemates in Channel 7’s Big Brother VIP. His dad bought the shack in the 1960s and the Curry family spent their weekends and holidays up there, forming fond memories of childhood. “It had a big brick chimney and the roof was made of corrugated iron, and it was a real ramshackle sort of place but we loved it,” Bernard says. When they were teenagers the shack became derelict after a tree fell on it, and it wasn’t until Bernard returned from Los Angeles that the family started heading up there again. They rebuilt the shack and they continue to work on the property. “When I came back from LA, I had two kids, Steve had two kids, Andrew had two kids and my sister Margaret had three kids,” he says. “I suggested to Steve, ‘Why don’t we go up there again and rebuild as a project for the family?’ and that’s what we did. It’s been a great experience as a family to do it together, and dad has just loved the fact we have rebuilt the house. “It’s also great that our kids get the experience that we did, and that is getting out of the city and having that country experience.”  ● WENTWORTH THE FINAL SENTENCE \ Premieres on August 24 at 8.30pm on Foxtel.

anned cocktails have become a global phenomenon, but it’s taken one Melbourne company to elevate the experience by bringing a top-shelf tipple to the aluminium revolution. The team at Curatif are leading the pack, aligning with award-winning bars as they reimagine the classics in a can – where flavour isn’t compromised and sustainability is at the heart of the enterprise. Matt Sanger, one of three founders behind the start-up, says the global cocktail crossroad renaissance started in 2005, and now it’s all about curated cocktails delivered to your door. “I call it the MasterChef effect,” Sanger says. “Everyone is cooking better food and are more aware when they’re shopping, and that’s all thanks to the MasterChef phenomenon, where provenance and quality are very important. “That curiosity has now spilled into cocktail culture. People want to drink less but better, and now it’s all about convenience. From Archie Rose espresso martinis made with Seven Seeds coffee to a Four Pillars gin negroni and Melbourne award-winning bar Black Pearl’s The Toreador, Curatif is all about aligning with the best in the business to deliver a quality cocktail. While Australians were already big fans of readyto-drink cockails long before the global pandemic hit, a series of lockdowns, which has seen bars and restaurants close for months at a time, has boosted their popularity even further as Aussies sip their cocktails at home. “Australia is the highest consumer of ready-todrink anywhere in the world,” says Sanger, who worked in bars for 20 years before undertaking his MBA and developing his new business model. “We wanted to make world-class cocktails that were transportable and convenient. Sustainability is important, too – we wanted to leave as small a footprint as possible, and the choice of aluminium cans made sense because they’re more likely to be recycled than anything else.” Another local maker, Batch & Co – best known

for its canned spritzers – has just ventured into the canned cocktail market with a range of negronis, espresso martinis and strawberry daiquiris. Founded by award-winning Melbourne bartender Thomas Kiltorp, it’s all about sourcing fruit from Mildura and coffee beans from Melbourne to keep the spirit loaded with local ingredients. Kiltorp says nostalgia was key. “You can’t go past the classics, or a classic with a twist,” he says. “Consumers are inclined to reach for something familiar and a great drink has the ability to bring back happy memories.” Ends and Means, a cocktail bar in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, has also put its attentive bar skills to the canned cocktail format with a small range, including Hookey’s Margarita, which is as close as you’ll get to pulling up a bar stool at the venue. The canned cocktail market was valued at $34 billion dollars in 2020 and is expected to grow by 20 per cent by 2030. “Collaborations are the key to the success of these cocktails,” Sanger says. This is no doubt the

reason his company won six medals at this year’s Premix Awards – including winning the World’s Best Classic Cocktail for its Tequila Tromba margarita and World’s Best Contemporary Cocktail for The Toreador.  ● ● curatif.com

WHAT CAN YOU DO THERE?

Located at the ‘Paris End’ of the CBD, and on the footstep of Parliament House, the parkland of Treasury Gardens is a reminder of why Victoria’s former slogan, “The Garden State”, was so apt. The lush Treasury Gardens are bounded by whitewalled government buildings and high rises, but the “cathedral” effect of the mature-tree canopies almost blocks out the sounds of the very proximate CBD. Their neighbour, the Fitzroy Gardens, are full of large, grassy boulevards leading around beautifully designed water features. In the Treasury Gardens, I check out the Victorian Emergency Services Memorial, which includes a magical little waterfall, while in the Fitzroy Gardens, I make a beeline for the conservatory, bursting with bright pink and purple blossoms. Other things to find in the Fitzroy Gardens include the Fairies Tree, the dragon-shaped slide in the playground and the Model Tudor Village, given to Victoria by an English pensioner after World War II.

When the city is not in lockdown the benches are typically littered with suited figures lunching, the ducks waiting patiently at their feet for crumbs. One confident duck I encounter even pecks at my leg for a bite of my brownie, and I can’t help but oblige. In the conservatory are couples both young and old making hushed noises of awe as they look at the vivid display of colours. On the lawns outside, a group of older women gather with their dogs. There is something about both gardens which make them feel quite separate from the city, where people come for solace. Una, a student at a nearby university, tells me she loves to come to Fitzroy Gardens to study because it reminds her of where she grew up in Phillip Island. “The city’s very claustrophobic with all the buildings and stuff; you feel very closed in, so it’s a bit of a reflection of home,” Una says. “You’ve got different areas where you can go on the little walkways where you’re quite hidden away.”

What isn’t nearby is the real question. Being right in the city, you’re spoilt for choice for things to do. Only a seven-minute walk from the Treasury Gardens is Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar. Along this part of Bourke Street you’ll also find Butchers Diner, Florentino and Bottega Restaurant, as well as a couple of iconic bookshops, The Hill of Content and the Paperback. So be sure to make time for a few stops on along the way.

Refurbished throughout, this chic home offers a relaxed, low-maintenance lifestyle in a convenient location. It’s a short walk from here to the beach at Station Pier, a few minutes on light rail to the CBD and close to parks and ovals. The property also has that very desirable 2021 addition – a separate, fitted home office at the bottom of the garden. This light and attractive building, with a large storage room behind, could easily be guest accommodation, a rumpus room, a studio, or be converted to a garage. On the ground floor of the home, the front door opens to a lounge. A laundry and powder room comes next and then the kitchen and the large living and dining area. The kitchen is glamorous and beautifully fitted with dark cabinetry, white stone benchtops, two Miele ovens, herringbone feature splash backs and a fine mix of drawer and cupboard storage. The waterfall island bench is wide enough for guests to sit on one side and chat while the chef prepares on the other. The dining section has built-in seating and the living area has bifold doors to the entertaining deck and pretty garden. Timber floors are fitted on the ground floor and, upstairs, the bedrooms are carpeted. Skylights tip light into the kitchen and living area. A floating timber staircase with glass balustrade leads up to the first floor. The main bedroom suite with a built-in wardrobe is at the front of the house. In the en suite, timber and subway tiles create a relaxing and stylish retreat. The family bathroom is a similar style and throws hexagonal tiles into the mix to add texture. The two
