My sister and I were recently recalling the painstaking process of going to the local video store as kids and trying to choose a movie the whole family could agree on. How times have changed. These days arguments are easily navigated by multiple devices and on-demand streaming services. Still, there’s something special about sitting down and watching the TV together as a family. So, when Dannii Minogue described the new season of The Masked Singer as a chance for the family to “scream at the telly and be silly”, I was in. Oh, and I can’t wait to check out her outfits. ●

New mum Emma Hamilton is loving her work on RFDS.
ctress Emma Hamilton was eight months pregnant when she auditioned for Channel 7’s new TV drama RFDS – based on the Royal Flying Doctor Service – and didn’t get her hopes up that she’d score the lead role. “I wasn’t sure if they would even consider a pregnant woman for the role, knowing it would mean I would be a new mum while we were filming. I shed a tear when I heard the news,” says the Melbourne-born Hamilton, who until now has spent her career living in the UK and acting in various British and American TV shows, including The Tudors, The Musketeers and Mr Selfridge. “The producers didn’t hesitate and were incredibly supportive. That gave me the confidence to take on the role,” she says. Filmed in Broken Hill, RFDS is a reimagining of the 1980s and ’90s classic. It follows doctors, nurses and pilots as they navigate outback medical emergencies, bringing with them plenty of action. Hamilton, who plays Dr Eliza Harrod, says learning the medical lingo was her biggest fear. “I have never done a medical show before and wasn’t sure about some of the pronunciations of the medical terms. I didn’t know how we would do the procedures, but was assured when I arrived that we had medical advice on set we could speak to at any time,” she says. When Hamilton, now 37, moved to London 13 years ago to pursue acting, she did so because she wasn’t able to get into a drama school in Australia. “I took a punt, moved overseas and was accepted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. It was three years of fun training,” she says. “I am really passionate about storytelling and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Acting is my happy place and gives me so much joy.” These days you’ll find Hamilton living on the Mornington Peninsula, where she grew up. When she was pregnant with donor-conceived Oliver in 2019, she knew she wanted to give birth in Australia. “Becoming a mother has been by the far the most important thing I have ever done in my life,” she says. “I would not have been able to do RFDS if it wasn’t for my own mum [Susy]. She was able to come ... and mind him while I was filming. “With our industry on its knees, it’s great to know that there are people in our biz who make it easier for mothers to come to work like me. It’s important we hear those positive stories in this time.” ● RFDS \ Wednesdays 8.40pm, Seven ● 7plus.com.au/rfds

Behind the mask COVER STORY Dannii Minogue spills the beans on The Masked Singer,
fashion, podcasts, home schooling and turning 50 with class.
A
Jason Grech gown she saw on Instagram a day after it was strutted down the runway during Melbourne Fashion Festival in March was enough to get celebrity Dannii Minogue on the phone to her stylist, insisting she had to have it. It’s no accident Minogue has chosen Melbourne’s biggest names in couture to create her custom wardrobe for the third season of The Masked Singer. With the COVID pandemic all but halting our chances to wear a ballgown and party frock because couch life is our new front row, Dannii is doing it for us. From a custom-made, black Jason Grech gown that required three fittings and added embellishments to a hot-pink mini dress with glitter and a JG logo plastered all over it, Minogue is embracing her inner disco for the hot seat of The Masked Singer with pops of neon too. “Jason is adorable, and with so many couture designers crippled by the pandemic because weddings and big parties aren’t happening, I wanted to do my bit to help them out,” Minogue says. “I rang Rachel [Dennis], my stylist, and she got the ball rolling. We filmed this season in Sydney and kept doing fittings in between lockdowns in Melbourne, it was crazy, but we got there in the end.”
6

Minogue also worked with Hawthorn couture queen Sonia Capellazzo for extra pieces. “Sonia’s a family friend and recently made the outfits for Tina Arena’s concert. Seeing that earlier this year feels like a lifetime ago now, but I am a big fan of what she does, and I love wearing these beautiful pieces that show off what’s made in Melbourne,” Minogue says. The Masked Singer is the feel-good family TV viewing we’ve all been waiting for. It’s loud, singalong, suspenseful and entertainment on steroids. Minogue joins Dave Hughes and Jackie O in an action-packed show you can play at home. This year they introduce new characters to the competition, including a kebab, a baby, a mullet and a pinata. “It’s a chance to sit down and watch something fun with your family and scream at the telly and be silly,” Minogue says. “We all need a bit of that in lockdown. It was well received last year. I loved getting out of my PJs and jeans to get dressed up every day. I know I’m lucky I’ve been able to work; I don’t take any of it for granted either,” she says. Away from her TV role, Minogue has joined Listnr – playing old-school ’90s hits and presenting The 90s podcast. She’s also into her seventh year of working with Target on her
Petites range and back to homeschooling with her son Ethan, 11. “I’ve just spent the morning trying to get The Spice Girls to do an interview for my podcast,” says Minogue as she takes this call. For Minogue, the ’90s were fun and carefree – and she still likes to channel an element of it in her wardrobe on The Masked Singer. It was the era in which she wore crop tops and platform heels but says, for the most part, she has swapped party outfits for casual attire these days. “I’m not J-Lo, I don’t work out four hours a day, and I tend to cover up the stomach these days,” she smiles. “I loved the fashion of the ’90s, though. To me, it reminds me of when I was living in London and working Europe every weekend doing gigs. It was me and four dancers on the road for five years. They were certainly ‘pinch me’ career moments. I was lucky to do all that travel back then.” Life in Melbourne lockdown means she tries to get out for her daily walks and exercise with her son, but just how hard is it to get out when you’re Dannii Minogue? “It’s as hard as you make it in your mind,” she says. “You want to be a part of the world and hope that people respect that I am trying to be healthy, and I do need to take my son to a park and don’t want to be held prisoner inside my home,” she says.
Dannii Minogue says she’s been lucky to keep working during the pandemic.
“I read something the other day that said turning 50 is like a mid-life celebration. That’s how I’ll be looking at it.”
Minogue, who turns 50 in October, says getting older doesn’t bother her. “I read something the other day that said turning 50 is like a mid-life celebration. That’s how I’ll be looking at it,” she says. Her grandmother is turning 102 in December, and Minogue hopes she’s blessed with the same genes. “I hope I’ve reached my halfway mark with plenty to go. My grandmother grew up on a dairy farm, and they lived off the land. She’s all about healthy eating, cooking and preparing your own food, and she always wants something with mushrooms in it – maybe that’s the secret,” she says. Knowing her good friend, the late music industry icon Michael Gudinski isn’t around to wish her a happy birthday this year is difficult. “The hardest part of this year was losing Michael,” Minogue says. “I am so glad we got to celebrate his life as we weren’t in lockdown, but it’s a huge loss for the Australian music industry and for Melbourne. “He pushed us all to be better and work together; he didn’t just care about the big stars, he loved the road crew, he loved everyone who made music happen with him.” ● THE MASKED SINGER \ Mondays, 7.30pm, Ten ● 10play.com.au/the-masked-singer

It is a bit quaint, a bit quirky and a lot charming. At its entrance on Glen Huntly Road, Elsternwick, Hopetoun Gardens welcomes visitors with two giant 19th-century cannons and appears as a humble, palm-tree-adorned park with neat paths and a whole lot of park benches. What is revealed as you venture further in is an enchanting overhang of old trees, both native and introduced, tables and chairs, a bandstand, barbecues, toilets, a great playground, on-leash and off-leash dog areas and a winding walking path. With a circular feature at its centre, the park was landscaped by designer Thomas Pockett and opened in 1901, with the cannons – two of only 25 ever made – installed in 1910. Pockett was responsible for designing a number of gardens in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs in the late 1800s and early 1900s, including Malvern Gardens. The playground itself is a real drawcard for families, when restrictions allow, with swings,

At the front end of the park, on Glen Huntly Road, there is a smartly dressed man walking a small pooch on a lead, while another sits idly on a bench. No one seems to be in a hurry, including a couple on a leisurely stroll. It’s pretty and calm. As I head into the gardens, I can hear people singing a harmony but I can’t see them. As I keep walking, I catch a glimpse of the musicians sitting beside a giant palm tree. They play their instruments softly and croon along in exquisite unison. I stand for a while and watch. Melbourne is between lockdowns when I visit and, besides the angelic group of singers, there are couples using park benches to do high-intensity workouts, sweating to pump-up music and egging each other on.

SHELFORD GIRL S’ GRAMMAR
F
rom developing their leadership skills and promoting positive mental health to enhancing cyber safety and study skills, the student wellbeing program at Shelford Girls’ Grammar is extensive and responsive. Most importantly, the program is guided by a team of experts and by the ideas and needs of the students themselves. “We are very strong on student voice and have an open-door policy. We listen to what our girls say and respond quickly,” says Pauline Cutajar, director of student wellbeing and development. Cutajar has spent 30 years working in girl’s education and joined Shelford Girls’ Grammar at the start of 2021. Since then, she has led the redesign of the school’s Quaerite Wellbeing Program - derived from the Latin word Quaere, meaning to seek, search, investigate or inquire - for preps to year 12s to ensure that topics discussed at each year level are relevant and build on knowledge from the previous year. As part of this, staff at Shelford have received extra training so they can further support students who seek their help and advice. “We pride ourselves on knowing our girls and having strong relationships with them, and we can pick up when they might need some extra support. We understand what the girls need at each year level, based on our local knowledge and data, and we have a bespoke wellbeing program that caters to each cohort,” she says. As well as equipping students with practical skills, strategies and knowledge to manage physical, emotional, social, spiritual and intellectual wellbeing, the program tackles important areas such as mental health and leadership potential. The Year 7 Thrive program safely introduces how to recognise mental health symptoms and promotes healthy mental health habits. It includes information about where students can seek help if needed and highlights a range of positive coping strategies to help ease stress and anxiety. This year, Cutajar introduced a year 11 leadership program to help prepare students keen to take on leadership positions during their final year. “It helps the girls who want to apply for leadership roles understand what the core of leadership is all about and understand what they have to offer.
B U I L D I N G R E L ATI O N S H I P S
It helps them uncover how their skills can be applied, and it helps some girls discover the confidence to consider becoming a leader when they might not have otherwise taken that step,” says Cutajar. But leadership is formally encouraged from the junior years. Under a new pilot program introduced this year, student representatives – or “Parliamentarians” – from years 7 and 8 meet with Cutajar and middle years coordinator Tristan Hill fortnightly to raise ideas and issues. “Recently, the years 7 and 8 leaders wanted to talk about the school uniform. So, a meeting was arranged so they could discuss their views,” says Cutajar. “The students know that their input is valued, and they know that when they raise issues, the school will listen and respond.”
SHELFORD GIRLS’ GRAMMAR \ 3 Hood Crescent, Caulfield ● 9524 7333 ● shelford.vic.edu.au
The Quaerite Wellbeing Program also supports wellbeing by encouraging students to discover their strengths and passions, develop a love of learning and a desire to make a positive contribution to society, demonstrate respect, and develop a sense of their own rights and responsibilities. “Girls do well when they are valued and feel connected and safe, and it costs nothing to look after the whole person. You can genuinely see the difference it makes in girls when they are able to do their best,” says Cutajar. “We value the person first so they can fly, and we combine that with great academic programs and opportunities to develop young women who will go out into the world and really make a difference.” ● SARAH MARINOS

FEATURE HOUSE ALBERT PARK \ 70 WITHERS STREET 3

An astonishing renovation has taken this Victorian cottage and catapulted it into the extraordinary. Behind the white picket fence is all you need for a glamorous and distinctive lifestyle. Two bedrooms, both with fireplaces, open off the arched hallway and these are followed by a bathroom. Next is the dramatic dark-timber, single-stringer staircase with boatwire balustrade and a glazed atrium roof above. A long courtyard to the side here adds even more dramatic flair with a green wall and decked floor. The kitchen, like the rest of the house is an elegantly simple palette of light and dark. It has stone benches, Miele appliances, integrated refrigeration and a bar fridge. Next to the kitchen and tipping more light into the living and dining section is a glass-brick wall to a light court. Returning to the centre of the house, that fabulous staircase takes you to the main bedroom suite and beyond. As you leave the staircase to enter the bedroom, there is a glass panel set into the floor. The bedroom design harvests light with glass bricks on one wall and a wall of windows looking out to the green of the courtyard topped by lasercut screens in a leafy pattern. A dark timber feature wall separates the bedhead from the glamorous en suite and there is a long expanse of built-in wardrobes. One more flight of stairs and the rooftop terrace with its sea air and views is a fabulous spot for entertaining, sunbathing or just hiding away from the world.
