The thing I love most about this week’s issue is gaining an insight into the way this pandemic has taken people in directions they never imagined. For singersongwriter Kate Miller-Heidke, it meant relocating from Northcote to her hometown of Brisbane. Meanwhile, Doc Martin star Katherine Parkinson fled a locked down London to film a new local television series in Melbourne. And Melbourne actor Dan Spielman indulged his passion for drawing birds.  ●

hen Kate Miller-Heidke relocated from her Northcote home to Brisbane earlier this year, she did so in the hope that moving north would deliver the freedom to play live shows. Getting on stage to sing Flame Trees with Ian Moss and William Barton at this month’s NRL Grand Final was one of those northerly wins, as was a chance to play the Brisbane Festival in September. “Melbourne is very much still home, but we needed to leave after the last lockdown [6.0] because I wasn’t dealing with it well at all,” Miller-Heidke says. “I’ve had mixed results in dealing with the pandemic like everyone else. I deleted all the news apps on my phone and got rid of Safari. I found looking at the news too much was making me feel the most powerless. “I am trying to be in the present, meditate and stay grateful, but it’s not easy,” she says. Rescheduling her Child in Reverse tour dates multiple times has become the norm in these pandemic times, and by the time she hits the road nationally in 2022 it’ll be a few years behind schedule. “I took live music and live performance for granted before the pandemic,” Miller-Heidke says. “But now more than ever we need it to feel connected to other people and hold onto that sense of hope. It left a big hole in my life not being able to tour, and I know I am not alone in that.” Known for her dreamy pop songs, Miller-Heidke delivers all the right hooks on the album Child in Reverse – one that’s tinged in reflection and touches on her depression after she gave birth to her son (now aged five) and trying to find her life-balance groove again. “Dealing with feelings of depression isn’t easy, but for me it’s all about trying to make good choices and focus on strategies that work and I have to be really disciplined about that,” Miller-Heidke says, adding that moving to Brisbane with her husband Keir Nuttall and their son was a tough choice, but one she is glad she made.

“We love Northcote,” she says of her residence of six years. “We miss our neighbourhood. When we left, we had the cast of Harry Potter living there while they were rehearsing for the show.” Last year, Miller-Heidke was the runner-up in the TV show The Masked Singer – disguised as the Queen and putting her operatic vocal range to full use. She represented Australia at Eurovision in Tel Aviv in 2019 and has five Helpmann Awards under her belt. The classically trained singer has many creative sides: she worked on an adaptation of John Marsden’s children’s book The Rabbits, which was co-commissioned by Opera Australia in 2015, and in 2017 she co-wrote the music and lyrics for Sydney Theatre Company’s Muriel’s Wedding with Nuttall.

“It takes going around the block a bit more to have more faith in yourself.” KATE MILLER-HEIDKE

That was meant to open on New York’s Broadway in 2020, but COVID-19 upended those plans. “We read about how Shakespeare wrote some of his masterpieces during the plague; that there was a sense this would be an opportunity as an artist to make use of time we wouldn’t get again – a nonnegotiable time at home,” says Miller-Heidke, who didn’t find that momentum last March. “Shakespeare didn’t have Twitter, though. So, that feeling of hyper vigilance, of being in danger with the news cycle – it’s hard for me to create when I am going through that sense of doom and gloom. “I found I couldn’t relax and my brain couldn’t function. I think I’ve come through the worst of it, but touring is my bread and butter too.

Other creative projects are great, but there is so much uncertainty around.” The 39-year-old has learned to live in the moment, and prefers not to look back, but when we touch on her debut album Little Eve, that was released in 2007, there are some demons that linger. “I was a girl from suburban Brisbane who had never been down south in my life when I signed a major label deal,” Miller-Heidke says. “I was being flown to places I had never been before. It was daunting. “Back then I had this frame of mind that I have observed in other people who are from smaller suburban places like me. It’s sort of like this selfdeprecation to the point of honestly believing I wasn’t good enough, that I was a fraud and would get found out. Some artists have that to a point, but mine was full-on. There is a song on my new album called People Pleaser – it’s definitely been a character flaw for me all my life. I was signed to Sony at the time and wanted to please them. I don’t think that served me very well,” she says. These days she’s more comfortable in her own skin. “That comes with getting older,” she smiles. “I was so green on my debut album cover. I blindly trusted people around me to make good decisions on my behalf, which of course they didn’t. “The picture I thought they were going to use on the cover didn’t come back as I expected,” Miller-Heidke says. “I suddenly had a Hollywood tan that wasn’t there before – my skin was a shade of orange. I was convinced that it would be OK and told I should pipe down about it. That’s probably one of my regrets. But it takes going around the block a bit more to have more faith in yourself. The fact I have managed to last in the industry as long as I have is a big deal and I celebrate that now.”   ● CHILD IN REVERSE TOUR \ From July 2022

Spielman’s golden era An SBS series on our Chinese miners is the latest venture for actor, artist and craftsman Dan Spielman. Wo r d s

“He was a man of conscience, enjoyed his relationship with Chinese head men at his camp and wasn’t out-and-out cruel. He was trying to take the path of least resistance.” Spielman might be best known for his roles in The Secret Life of Us, Offspring and, more recently, Sisters and Stateless, but he has a life away from the screen too. He has been running his own joinery and furniture business as a parallel side hustle and, during lockdown, started drawing birds and selling the artworks online. “Drawing birds was a joyful focus among the difficulty of being in Melbourne. Birds have always been my companion,” says Spielman, who has a workshop in his 93-year-old grandmother’s garage in Studley Park. “The years of technical drawing for my joinery work certainly built a skill level underneath that I hadn’t thought about before.” And then there’s his elegant furniture. “There is so much to learn in the art of woodwork,” Spielman says. “When it comes to joinery, I do it because it gives me the same feeling I get when I do theatre, film and television work. It’s the visual arts, it’s a community of knowledge and people sharing in your enthusiasm for solving problems ... aside from making things that are beautiful and elegantly functional.”  ● NEW GOLD MOUNTAIN \ Premieres on SBS, October 13, and on SBS On Demand ● danielspielmanstudio.com

hen Melbourne actor Dan Spielman received an email from director Corrie Chen to join the cast of a new SBS drama New Gold Mountain, he was instantly drawn to telling the untold story of Chinese miners who arrived in the Victorian Goldfields in the 1850s ... and the fact it was riffing on his favourite series of all time – Deadwood. “It’s not the normal way you go about getting roles, to be offered something,” says Spielman, who earlier this year managed to complete an uninterrupted MTC run of Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes. New Gold Mountain was filmed in Sovereign Hill and around Melbourne. The four-part series stars actress and supermodel Alyssa Sutherland and Chinese-born, New Zealand actor Yoson An. It’s like a frontier western set in the era of the Gold Rush, but not as we know it. As a teenager, Spielman spent a lot of time visiting an uncle in a former mining town in Tasmania. “I remember coming across Chinese graves that were older than any postcolonial artefacts around and was surprised that there’s not much that we know a lot about. New Gold Mountain certainly shows a side we need to hear more about,” he says. Spielman plays the historical figure Captain Frederick Standish. “He was born into aristocracy and left England for Australia under the shadow of gambling debt. He has some authority, but is a morally ambivalent figure in the story,” Spielman says.

Loving Melbourne P

Katherine Parkinson spent lockdown shooting a local series. TINA SMIGIELSKI

laying a divorced mother of two looking for love in the new comedy-drama Spreadsheet is the reason English actress Katherine Parkinson left London for a four-month stint in Melbourne this year. Best known for her role as the kooky receptionist Pauline in Doc Martin and starring in the British series The IT Crowd, Parkinson relocated with her husband and their two daughters, embracing Melbourne’s on and off lockdown months as the rest of us did. “I was offered this job a year ago while in London lockdown, so the idea of being allowed to go to the other side of the world was exciting,” says Parkinson, who arrived in May and left in August. “It was the right script with lots of potential as a comedy. It instantly appealed.” Pitched as a funnier version of Sex and the City and filmed in a Caulfield residence and other Melbourne locations, Spreadsheet is all about finding the balance between sex, work and motherhood. Parkinson fell in love with the grand Victorian terraces and welcomed the change of scenery. “The trees are radically different to those you find in the UK and I loved the architecture of the homes in Melbourne,” she says of her first Australian trip. “If I could have one more day in Melbourne, I’d spend it at the Peninsula Hot Springs with my family. That place was divine.” Parkinson plays Lauren, a mother who has come out of a painful break-up and is trying to take control of all aspects of her life. “She’s a single mother who doesn’t like using a dating app and doesn’t necessarily want another relationship, but does so for the sake of her children,” she says. “She’s not an in-control cougar, she’s a bit square and not been very promiscuous until this period of her life. She doesn’t know how to play it – that’s where the comedy comes in.” While living in Melbourne, Parkinson took her family to the South Melbourne market each week, found some time to escape to Daylesford and fell in love with the Sun Theatre in Yarraville. Her husband, actor Harry Peacock, told her he’d move to Melbourne in a heartbeat and get a job at South Melbourne Market.

Wo r d s

“He seriously fell in love with it all,” she says. Parkinson appeared in three seasons of Doc Martin between 2005 and 2009, a time she looks back on with affection. “[Actor] Martin Clunes is a brilliant man and I learned how to be professional, have a laugh and enjoy your job at the same time,” she says. “Martin is gracious despite the massive workload you’re under filming a series like Doc Martin. Your tone sets the mood for everyone on set and the crew.” Parkinson admits she was recognised on Melbourne streets (yep, even with a mask) and says

JA N E R O C CA

Peacock got the odd tap on the shoulder too. He is best known for his acting roles in Gulliver’s Travels and the long-running TV series Toast of London. “It is so lovely to be recognised, but when younger people come up to you and say they adore you in The IT Crowd, I’m like, wow, that was done such a long time ago and they still recognise me,” she laughs. “I’m 44 now, but it’s reassuring that humour is still relatable because so much changes over time. I love that it’s still relevant.”  ● SPREADSHEET \ From October 20 on Paramount+

The ornate facade with its intricate fretwork, stained glass, bay windows and tessellated-tile verandah show this as a highly detailed and well-preserved Edwardian home. What the facade does not hint at, though, is the wildly contemporary interior that takes over when the original section is done. The two areas are very well defined. In the front section, period elements are there in fireplaces, fretwork arches, ceiling roses, cornices, picture rails and deep skirting boards. The main bedroom has the facade’s beautiful bay window, a chic en suite with stone finishes and free-standing twin basins, and a walk-in wardrobe. Opposite is another bedroom, or study, followed by the dining room and library with a colourful corner fireplace. In the rear section, the kitchen, meals and living area is spacious, wider than the original house. It opens to a barbecue kitchen, dining area and built-in seating on one side and a sapphire blue pool on the other flanked by a deck and more built-in seating. The timber and marble kitchen has Gaggenau appliances, two ovens, a large pantry and excellent storage. Also in this zone is the family bathroom with a sunken bath. There is a window to the pool from the basement which has a kitchenette, media room and cellar. Upstairs is the children’s zone with two bedrooms that open up via stacker doors to make one large room with a balcony. The third bedroom has a wall of cupboards.
