Melbourne-based, Ethiopian-born South Sudanese artist Atong Atem is one to watch in the art world, and will soon be furthering her horizons in Zurich. Her vibrant portraits with a stylised, mythological technique, breathtaking beauty and surreal detail, challenge conventional beauty representations and explore identity and migrant stories. Her five-panel self-portrait photographic piece, A yellow dress, a bouquet (2022) is the winner of the new $80,000 La Prairie Art Award for female Australian artists, and a piece of this award-winning work features on this week’s cover. ●

outh Sudanese Australian artist Atong Atem flips the ethnographic gaze by using bright self-portraits and images of family to provoke thoughts about heritage and its cultural and visual representation in art. The Melburnian uses bright face paint and make-up to loudly prove her point and layers her portrait photography with other luscious textures, fabrics and jewellery to amplify the migrant narrative. Atem arrived in Australia as a refugee with her parents, who relocated from South Sudan to Sydney when she was three. Her father, a journalist, and mother, a translator, are her greatest intellectual inspirations. Atem is the recipient of the inaugural La Prairie Art Award for 2022, a partnership between the Swiss luxury skincare house and the Art Gallery of NSW, which has acquired one of her works. Represented by Mars Gallery in Melbourne, Atem’s profile is on the rise. She was shocked to hear she was this year’s La Prairie Prize winner. “I didn’t have time to enter for the prize, so when I received the call, I didn’t know I had won – I thought it was a reminder to submit something,” Atem says. “I feel extremely honoured. As an artist, we’ve tried to keep our heads above water these last few years, and to know a work has been acquired by the gallery is really rewarding.” Atem won the award for her work A Yellow Dress, A Bouquet (2022). The $50,000 prize, which also includes a trip to Zurich, Switzerland, to attend the Art Basel international art fair and exhibit in a month-long residency in June. In the award-winning work, Atem is wearing a yellow Romance was Born dress that she bought as a birthday gift to herself. She paints her own face. “The embroidery on the dress reminded me of the work my mum and aunties do; it felt like a nod

to their culture and the women in my family definitely influence my thinking and my work,” Atem says. The work itself is part surrealism and an ode to the influence of studio photography in her work. “It’s a fantastical world influenced by my love of science fiction,” she says. Atem will also exhibit at Melbourne’s Photo 22, starting on April 29, with her large-scale photographs on display in the Old Treasury Building. She has been commissioned to create a book for the event, titled Surat – a South Sudanese Arabic word that translates to “photo”. Atem began studying architecture at Sydney College of the Arts but moved to Melbourne in 2014 to take up photography at RMIT. She hasn’t completed her studies but stayed in Melbourne. You’ll find her browsing scanned family photographs and archival images of African cultures to reinvigorate the discussion around identity, ethnicity and what family means. Atem’s work is a fusion of fashion photography and portraiture elegance, and it’s a world where the public and private intersect. “I have become more comfortable with taking my self-portraits, but it’s because they tend to be colourful and layered and you don’t see me in them,” she says. “If I had to take a documentarystyle portrait of myself, I wouldn’t feel as comfortable, I’d be more vulnerable. I think because my work is so personal and about home and family, it’s a place I feel instinctually more relaxed and my best work comes because of that.” Atem, who still speaks Dinka with her family, works from her home studio in Brunswick East. “I did have a separate studio in 2018, but found I work so sporadically it was better I did it from home,” she says. “I love to access the Merri Creek, it’s a huge inspiration for me too. My best work comes down to mood and instinct, and I’m most in tune with that when I am home.” ● ● atongatem.com

That’s unexpected! At the traditional kaiseki restaurant Ishizuka, hidden in a basement off Bourke Street, dishes on a set menu march out like a runway fashion parade – and you’ve got the front-row seat. Surrounded by brutalist architecture, dishes are prepared before your eyes and sparkling sake does not stop at one glass. The small restaurant feels extra exclusive thanks to its policy of hosting only 16 diners per sitting. “Ishizuka is a totally secret spot and most guests can’t find us,” senior sous chef Shin Ishizuka says. The immersive set menu is all about intricate kaiseki – a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner – moving from raw sashimi to warm morsels of wagyu, Spanish truffle curled over sushi and abalone crowned in gold leaf. At Society, Chris Lucas is ramping up on destination dining, bringing a world-class restaurant standard to the 80 Collins Street precinct.

“Fine dining is dead,” Lucas says of the term. “For me, it’s all about destination dining. This is a time for elevated experiences where the look and feel of the restaurant is all part of the package, from the design to the aesthetic to the food. “People want to immerse themselves in an experience. Diners want a sensuous experience when it comes to food and they want to shed their day-to-day drudgery and enter a fantasy land.” An a la carte menu with a focus on seasonal changes is key in the hands of Society executive chef Luke Headon, formerly of The Fat Duck. “Luke represents the youth and energy of modern Australian cooking and making it memorable,” Lucas says. ● GIMLET \ 33 Russell Street, Melbourne SOCIETY \ 80 Collins Street, Melbourne ISHIZUKA \ Basement B01/139 Bourke Street, Melbourne

T

he art of dining is back in Melbourne’s CBD, but not as we know it. It’s the era of elevated casual, where fine restaurant moments come with an element of the unexpected. Andrew McConnell’s Gimlet, in Cavendish House, is a bistro that feels like a bar – a little slice of Paris in the heart of Melbourne. Here, you can pull up a stool and eat a cheeseburger and order a cocktail, or have a steak tartare prepared tableside during the week. It’s dining theatre without being too stuffy. The nostalgia is intentional at Gimlet. Through food, you are transported to an international destination without leaving our own city. The crisp white tablecloths nod to all that is traditional, the drinks staff flourish a cocktail list with pleasure, and this modern vision of fine dining comes with a raucous soundtrack that’s cheekier than previous incarnations. “It’s about having a unique space and experience for diners,” McConnell says. “It’s not an overly formal environment, it’s fun, a little raucous but has finer elements and focus to it. When I go out, I want quality without the fuss and that’s what we do.”

FASHION Getaway’s

Catriona Rowntree has embraced clothing design.

In the thick of a wool revival

I

n 2008, when Catriona Rowntree married sheep farmer James Pettit, the TV presenter formed a deep appreciation for working on the land. The couple live in the town of Little River, about 20 minutes from Geelong, where she and Pettit run a successful wool farm. “Falling in love with a wool grower many moons ago – at the time I had no idea how I could contribute to his business and this new life,” she says. “So, I asked the Australian Wool Innovation group if they could put me to work as an ambassador, as I can talk the leg off anything.” Rowntree, who is a household name as a Getaway presenter for Channel 9, travelled the country in that role, and it led to her meeting fashion designer Emily Riggs, who also married a wool farmer. Riggs is the founder of the label Iris & Wool, a proudly ‘slow-fashion’ label started in 2019, producing 100 per cent Australian merino wool women’s, men’s and childrenswear collections. The pair became firm friends and, during COVID, decided to create a new clothing range together,

made of 100 per cent certified merino wool. The five designs include jumpers and coats named after wool-producing towns, including Little River. Rowntree is proud of becoming a fashion designer in such a challenging time for the industry. “The entire design process was done over Zoom,” she says. “Both Emily and I were doing remote learning and we had our children at home and causing chaos all around us, but we got it done. “It was amazing. I suppose it is a credit to all working women; we can achieve amazing things.” Rowntree is equally excited about helping to showcase Australian wool farmers around the world. “I just hope this makes our wool farmers feel really proud of what they are doing every day, helping make sustainable fashion that can be handed down for generations,” she says. Her family, including children Andrew, 12, and Charles, 11, is thrilled by her contribution. “I think James knows that something like this genuinely helps the bottom line and gets more people talking about wool and also buying local fashion,” she says.

Wo r d s

After a two-year, pandemic-induced break, Rowntree has started travelling again as host of Getaway – something she’s done for 26 years. “I’m so excited,” she says. “For the first trip I packed in two minutes.” As well as becoming a fashion designer, she has also recently earned her pilot’s licence and is learning French. “I think COVID-19 was a shapeshifter for me,” she says. “Nothing will ever be the same and I’m so happy with my new normal.” Getaway has been running for 31 years, and despite there being little or no travel for the past couple of years, the show has still found a healthy audience during the pandemic. “Getaway never missed a beat,” Rowntree says. “I have a studio at home where I do all the voiceovers for the show and it’s on air every single week around the world. “I think it shows that even if we can’t physically travel, we still want to watch people travelling.” ● ● irisandwool.com

The pastry master’s new groove Raymond Capaldi has U-turned from chef to bakery maestro. Wo r d s

cottish-born chef Raymond Capaldi and his partner Jodi Crocker are expanding their sensory world of homemade delights. They are adding to their specialist bakeries with Baketico in Brighton – sweets, artisan bread and Ray’s celebrated Wonder Pies range. This is where desserts riff on classics (including vanilla slices

and doughnuts) but also Capaldi’s intriguing take on a Chiko Roll. The duo swapped the high-end restaurant grind for artisan bakery life and aren’t looking back. It’s definitely been the hardest slog of their life – four and a half years of trial and error, but they’ve found their winning formula and it’s resonating with locals.

locations,” she says. They adjust their menus for every area “to make sure it’s flexible and reflective of what locals want”. They’ve outgrown their factory in Bulleen and will move into a new one in Coburg mid-year. Before the COVID pandemic they had 15 staff; that has grown to 70. “The good thing is, we have some brilliant minds among us and not all come from hospitality,” Crocker says. “Some joined the industry to try something new and so it’s very much a mixed bag of people [with] varied skills and amazing ideas, and that

has really helped create a positive energy to what Ray and I do.” Capaldi still approaches his product development with culinary excellence and skill – he was always known for his textural flair and penchant for quality ingredients in the restaurant world. Sophie O’Connor from Pandy Bakeshop has joined them as part of their mentorship program to create gluten-free and vegan desserts. “Sophie dropped off a sample box one day she made in her kitchen at home and it was so impressive,” Crocker says. “Her flavour

combinations make what she does so popular.” Going from culinary trickery to bakery simplicity has been the biggest career U-turn for Capaldi, who says he tries to keep the process as uncomplicated as possible. “I used to be a tricky chef and now I’m all about keeping it simple and letting the ingredients shine,” he says. “I’m back as an apprentice and learning a hell of a lot about food because there is more learning in manufacturing and how that works than there is to being a chef.” ●

After leaving his Melbourne restaurant Hare & Grace, Capaldi moved into the world of wholesale and decadent pies. The Wonder Pies brand still exists, but the store names have been changed to Baketico to capture a broader offering. “It’s been a huge learning journey for me,” says Capaldi, who opened Hare & Grace – his bistro, bar and dining room – in 2010. “Entering the world of manufacturing and baking is miles away from what I did as a chef. It was like I was starting again in many ways, but we’ve taken a lot of chances and it’s paying off.” It’s about tailoring to the locals when they open a new bakery, says Crocker, who used to work in PR. In Westgarth, vegan and vegetarian sweets and savoury pies rule. “There is no cookie-cutter approach with our multiple

Superbly renovated and decorated in white, cream and grey with marble to match, this sophisticated two-storey terrace maximises the beauty of the Victorian era and celebrates the best of here and now. The floor plan has been masterfully adapted to retain the spirit and the flourishes of the period while adding light, space and contemporary functionality. From the lace-trimmed and intricately tiled verandah, the front door opens to an arched hall. A formal sitting room, with marble fireplace and fitted joinery, is off to the right. Double doors, framed in grey steel, lead from there to the full-width kitchen. Two ovens, an induction cooktop and an integrated fridge and freezer make cooking easy and a pivoting Vitra Potence wall light, a European classic, extending over the marble bench adds mega-style. Tucked away are a fitted laundry and powder room. Next is the living and dining area, with cabinetry and fireplace set into a marble surround. The glazed rear wall opens to a paved and landscaped courtyard with built-in seating. An outdoor kitchen comprises a built-in Weber Summit barbecue, drinks fridge and sink. On the first floor, the main bedroom has luxuriously thick carpet, an open fireplace with cast-iron insert and french doors to the balcony with its frame of iron lace. The walk-in wardrobe is large and the shower of the luxurious en suite opens to the outdoors. The second and third bedrooms have built-in wardrobes.
