We want to do our bit for the environment, but it means the shops we buy from have do their part. It all goes hand-in-glove. As we consume more consciously, we expect transparent effort from the retailers we know and trust. We had rare access for this edition to the retail boss in charge of one of the best known stores in Australia – Target. Richard Pearson has a vision for how the major department store will meet its climate change goals, and explains why his store wants you to hang onto your clothes for longer, and even hand them down. It’s a new school of thought in fashion. ●

COVER STORY
Richard Pearson is boldly reinventing one of Australia’s bestloved big brands to turn it ‘green’.
I
f Richard Pearson ever tired of the retail game, he might have a future in politics. As the head of one of Australia’s most iconic businesses, Pearson is reading the room on what his customers – who vote with their feet and debit cards – want and expect. The managing director of Target Australia is relaunching the brand with an environmentally conscious underpinning, responding to the public expectation that big business will do its part to combat climate change and reduce waste. Target has been a staple in Australian households since 1926, with turning points that have matched

At the helm of a retail revolution the social milieu, just as Pearson hopes the ecoreinvention will. The biggest in the consumer consciousness, before this sustainability jump-start, would be the groundbreaking fashion collaboration with British luxury designer Stella McCartney (2007 and 2010). McCartney-meets-Target was a game-changer that showed how a mass, mid-price department store could tickle the delight of its customers, and they responded with stampedes and predatory tactics on launch day (after lining up for hours, some women ripped the clothes from mannequins and each other’s grasp). The release gave birth to the phrase “diffusion line” and was so popular, and limited in numbers, that secondhand dresses, tops and jackets, now at least 12 years old, fetch $40 to $80 on eBay. Since then, the appetite for fast fashion has shifted to more considered purchasing across all categories, not just clothing. However, affordability is still an important part of the mix. Well-known brands across Australia are adopting a do-better approach. When mining magnate Andrew Forrest bought RM Williams early last year, he pledged to move more of its manufacturing back to Australia after an outcry – and a personal irking – that the archetypal Aussie boots were not all made here. “I’m just so glad it is now back and I’d have to say the family has a big solid lump in its throat about returning RM Williams to Australia,” Forrest said. Independent research commissioned by freight company CouriersPlease in November 2020 – when online shopping became a national pandemic pastime – found nine in 10 Australians were more likely to buy sustainable products and 85 per cent wanted brands to be more open about the sustainability of their goods. CouriersPlease, which covers 95 per cent of Australia, has set a goal to become carbon neutral by 2025, beginning with offsetting petrol consumption and road time for its fleet (the
equivalent of 1.7 million litres of fuel and 540 fewer laps around Australia’s coastline, to be exact) by June last year. Pearson is a former director of Kmart Australia (the Kmart Group owns Target) and previously led the merchandise and supply chain arm of cosmetics juggernaut Mecca. Before that, he was the general manager of Caltex Australia. However, he is right at home in the fashion caper. Although affordable clothing has gone hand-inglove, at least in consumers’ minds, with fast turnover and insatiability, Pearson hopes this new business model will encourage customers to treat their garments as much-loved “hand-me-downs”. It’s a departure from the fast-fashion ethos that has dominated the broader rag trade in recent years. “A key part of the campaign we’re also conveying is that we believe our products should be enjoyed more and loved longer. We’re designing collections so they can stand up to the test of everyday life,”
2021 Fashion Transparency Index, an annual ranking of the industry’s human rights and environmental policies and onflow. “Target absolutely has a responsibility in educating and making it easier for customers to play a role in creating a better future for the planet and our people … you can expect to hear a lot more from us going forward around what we’re doing to build a more sustainable business,” Pearson says. The company is preparing to trial a program called Target Hand Me Rounds, in a partnership with Upparel. Customers can donate unwanted Target clothing through charities and social enterprises to be reused. If not fit to wear again, the clothes will be converted into recycled materials and transformed into new products. Similar schemes have been making a significant impact. Rip Curl, a global Goliath based on Victoria’s Surf Coast, encourages its customers to recycle their wetsuits at drop-off points, turning

Pearson says. “This includes everything from the way we source our materials and design our products, to the way we curate collections so they can be mixed and matched or dressed up and down. “By extending the life of our products we’re giving our customers better value over the long term. It is why the style of our products isn’t just about loving what’s in right now, it’s also about creating new season collections with greater versatility, so they can be for more seasons – not just one season.” Target ranked equal 10th in a list of the world’s 250 largest fashion brands for public disclosure around its production model, according to the

By June next year, all wool used in its clothing and bedding will be ethically sourced, and from farms identified as not practising mulesing. By the following year, all leather goods sold in stores will be a byproduct of the meat industry, which is considered a more ethical form of sourcing. “We know what we do today will affect how we live tomorrow, so we’re always looking for new ways that we can all live and work more responsibly and sustainably,” Pearson says. ●

They’re little souls and very perceptive.” In March, PETstock hosted its National Pet Adoption Month, led by charity PETstock Assist, to help rescue animals find a permanent or temporary home. The statistics are frightening: more than 36,000 cats and kittens in the organisation remain homeless, and large dogs and bonded pairs also struggle to find homes. Each year, 80,000 urban stray cats are euthanised by councils. Owner Lyndelle Wilkinson, for one, has not looked back since adopting her cats Curtis and Dave, a bonded pair. The situation suited her because she was loathe to leave a single cat alone when she went back to work. She adopted the duo as kittens and
felt that not only was adoption a logical choice, but financially sound. “To pay an exorbitant amount of money seems a bit indulgent and beside the point,” Wilkinson says. “Pets are about commitment and connection and love, and no amount of money can buy that.” For Naomi Veldhuizen, whose cat Louise has a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia, choosing an animal with a disability was something she did purposefully. Although it was not her original choice, once she saw Louise on an adoption site, she felt an immediate pull to her. Louise’s condition affects her balance and co-ordination, but otherwise she is fully healthy. “She’s super cuddly and grateful and that trumps any hardship,” she says. “I think the animals know deep down that you’ve done something special for them. I didn’t think that was a real thing until I experienced

I told her how proud I was of all her work over the years spreading the messages and raising funds for rescue animals.” Before her passing, Seven’s Sunrise weatherman told Domain Review there were rewards particular to saving the life of a rescued animal. “If you’re there for someone at their lowest point, or get them out of a challenging or dangerous situation, they’ll never forget you,” he said. ”I feel like there’s a version of that with animals. Designed by Carr architecture and interior design studio, and developed by Fortis, Pillar+Tide is a boutique collection of 16 residences and is nearing completion. The bold and elegant building is designed with robust natural materials to retain its looks and durability for many years to come. Lush greenery, inspired by the native coastal plants and landscape of the area, and designed by landscape architecture firm, Acre, flanks both street frontages, ensuring privacy and an attractive outlook for residents. Plants also feature on the top floor, draping over the parapet and softening the geometry of the building. This spacious apartment would be ideal for downsizers, or would suit a family, as it is close to government schools and several prestigious independent schools are nearby. Interiors have been designed to capture abundant natural light and maximise space and rooms are understated and elegant. Harmony and cohesiveness are strong guidelines in the decor with luxurious materials masterfully crafted. Grey tundra natural stone is a feature throughout. In the living area, the shadowy softness of the stone’s various shades of grey is used above the charcoal grey setting of the gas-log fire. Wide-cut oak floors and floor to ceiling glazing complete the feeling of space and elegance. Entertaining is designed to be effortless. There is a full scullery or butler’s pantry, Miele appliances and excellent storage. Tundra stone is used in the kitchen as a full-height splashback incorporating the range hood, on benchtops and the waterfall island bench, and on the floor.
