I’m writing my first editor’s letter back after maternity leave, and my 11-month-old is bouncing on my lap. She wants to get down, but then she wants “up” again. I’m just lucky my three-year-old is at daycare, not here demanding snacks. This is work-life meshed with mum-life. I love the flexibility, but it’s not without its challenges and sacrifices – to which even the most famous among us are not immune. Case in point, our Mother’s Day cover star Bec Judd has given up her on-air roles to spend more time with her four children. She tells us about the juggle and her own mum’s positive influence. ●

COVER STORY

Mum-life is a ball Bec Judd on prioritising family while still sneaking in some fun.

NORTHBROOK AGENCY

I

t’s been the greatest reset of her life, but Bec Judd insists giving up on a media career to focus on family was the right move for her and her clan. The 39-year-old mother of four, who is married to former AFL footballer Chris Judd, says it took a pandemic to help her cull the unnecessary and focus on what mattered most. “There were some jobs I could continue at home and others I gave up altogether,” Judd says. “I wanted to make sure I was doing less because our kids needed us.” She has no regrets about quitting her media commitments, which saw her walk away from a radio show spot that clashed with her school pickups and a presenter gig on Channel Nine’s local travel show Postcards. “I love a red-carpet event and, yes, they’re fun but they’re quite rare these days. It’s not my life,” she says. “I am a mum who is busy with my family.” Despite fewer A-list events, her 791,000 Instagram followers continue to engage with her posts, and she attributes her longevity on social media to staying authentic. “I like to show a bit of everything and keep it real. That resonates with my audience and maybe that’s why they like and continue to follow me,” Judd says. “It’s all about balance, not about bragging.” On the day of this interview, Judd’s children are patiently sitting on the sidelines while Mum works (it’s school holidays). “I’m at every single school pick-up and attend every game of sport and training session and I am loving it,” says Judd, who worked as a speech pathologist before being whisked into the WAG world in the mid 2000s. “Going to our son Oscar’s cricket game is a highlight of my week,” she says. “COVID helped

me realise how much I loved being home. I keep asking my kids if they loved having us at home this much, and their response is still ‘yes’.” Judd is the co-founder of activewear brand Jaggad and an ambassador for Melbourne City Land Rover, Chadstone and The Skincare Company, all of which allow her to work from home. But a bit of glam is never off the cards – she recently travelled to California for Coachella and to celebrate her mum Kerry Brown’s 60th birthday. The two women were separated by COVID travel restrictions for the best part of two years, as Brown lives in Judd’s hometown of Perth. “Mum was one of the first into Victoria when borders opened,” Judd says. “It was so good to see her again. We did a lot of face time and chat over the last few years, and now are going to celebrate her milestone in style.” Judd credits her mother with making sport a big part of her life, with netball training and weekly competitions as a teenager.

“Mum loved nothing more than watching us compete and I am exactly the same,” Judd says. In a sign her competitive streak is still everpresent, Judd renovated a family holiday home in Mount Buller in a 10-week blitz last year. “I love the process of renovating and seeing my ideas come to life,” she says. The Judds started the demolition at the property on the day they got the keys. “We didn’t have time to procrastinate; it meant I chose what I could access in Melbourne – from timber to furniture. It all had to be local and that was the only way we could do it so quickly.” Judd hints there may even be a home collection on the cards in the future. “I like doing things that haven’t been done before,” she says. “I am always onto the next trend that excites me the most and I like to surprise people. Who knows what will happen next?” she says. ●

Elliot Garnaut and his mum Kathy Garnaut My mum Kathy Garnaut is arguably the most inspirational person in my life. For as long as I can remember I have looked up to her for her distinct personality. She is poised, elegant and caring, yet ruthless and unwavering. She never suffers fools. Through observing these characteristics more specifically in my adult life, she has become a muse to me in so many facets. Not only in the way I treat people – with respect, giving everyone a chance –

but in the way I run my business: both headstrong and focused. Kathy is quite simply a show stopper. She taught me almost everything I know, from fashion to relationships and personal conduct. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect or loving mother. Mum has always encouraged my brother and I to experiment with fashion. I think it was this freedom that allowed us to not only fall in love with clothing, but to use clothing as a form of self-expression.

Nine Postcards presenter

Brodie Harper and her mum Andrea Harper My mother Andrea Harper taught me to be kind, compassionate, caring, resilient, open-minded and strong. I try every day to live up to what she taught me and teach those same values to my daughter. I thank her for having taught me these things, and if ever feel I am forgetting them, I remind myself to be a better person. Mum is still my best friend. My dad [Allan], mum, my brother Kristian and I grew up on the Mornington Peninsula. Mum is retired now and loves to read. She is proud of me regardless of what I do, as long as I do it to the best of ability. She has always encouraged my endeavours through life, whether it be my media career or my marathon running.

She was amazing when I went back to university during COVID lockdowns to study nutrition. She lives nearby and has helped us since our daughter Jess was born with anything we need. We’ve never needed day care or babysitters as Jess would always stay at Mum and Dad’s and loves visiting Granny and Papa. My mum has always gone the extra mile with the small things as well. Like the hours spent on making our birthday cakes from The Australian Women’s Weekly cookbook to the school dress-up outfits. In fact, my mum still helps me with sewing alterations my family needs and, I’m embarrassed to say this, she still helps me get stains out of our clothes that I just can’t seem to budge.

ABC Radio Melbourne presenter and This Working Life author

Lisa Leong and her mum Noi Leong During my first week at kindergarten when I was four, all the boys went out to play in the yard and the girls stayed inside to play with dolls. I ran outside and climbed trees, wrestled and got muddy. My parents were called into a meeting because I was running outside with the boys when I should have been indoors. My mum, Noi, told the kindy teachers I could run outside! It was the ’70s and Mum is a Thai woman who is definitely her own person. She is the opposite to me in some ways – she is beautifully dressed and polite and I was a tomboy growing up – but she accepted that in me. It allowed me to feel freedom. Another pivotal moment in my memories with Mum was at our home in Burwood. I found a pot of nail polish when I was about three and walked over to this amazing canvas I found – a window blind. My dad Harry is an architect and it was a Marimekko blind. I remember thinking, ‘Great! I will paint something special on it.’ Mum rushed to me and didn’t yell. I still remember her telling me quietly what I had done was wrong, and talking me through it calmly. There was no punishment. To this day, I will have dinner at my parent’s place and there’s still that very blob

they’ve tried to remove on the blind. I think my courage does come from that experience. I love sport. I cycle, run and play tennis and can thank Mum for that. Mum was the sporty one and a basketball champion. She taught me and my brother Andrew how to roller skate, ski and play tennis. We definitely have those loves in common. Mum worked as a nurse and midwife, later with elderly people. She was very good and patient at listening to their stories. She would chat to strangers on the street all the time, too. I remember thinking this was super-embarrassing as a kid, but of course now I am my mum! I am the embarrassing mum who will talk to anyone – and it’s what I do on radio. ●

Thoroughly modern Edith Laura Carmichael on the strong women of Downton Abbey. Wo r d s

W

hen actress Laura Carmichael landed the role of Lady Edith Crawley in the historical drama series Downton Abbey, she could not have imagined she would still be portraying the much-loved character 12 years later, after six seasons and two movies to boot. The latest film, Downton Abbey: A New Era, hit the big screen last month, and in it a glamorous life awaits the once-forlorn middle sister. “Edith has not only found true love with Bertie [played by Harry

“We’re living in a time when we’re not going to accept just playing the generic wife in the story. I think people want to see women’s stories.”

Haden-Patton] but become such a modern woman. You see that in this film; she’s a working mum, and I love that for her,” Carmichael says. In the new film, set in the late 1920s, two stories interweave. In one, art imitates life as a movie crew uses Downton (Highclere Castle in reality) as its backdrop. At the same time, Edith visits a villa, in the south of France, which her grandmother Violet (Maggie Smith) has apparently inherited. For Laura, the French location sparked particular joy, especially since Lady Edith swans about in silk trousers and luxurious kimonos. “Everyone was very envious of my wardrobe, and we had a great time because we had to quarantine in the south of France, which was not actually a hardship ... it was a bit of a party!” The movie is far from being merely a pleasant romp in the sunshine; the audience will have their fair share of eye-dabbing along with the laughter.

For avid followers of the show, there is certainly satisfaction in watching Lady Edith coming into her own as a wife, mother and – in this movie – journalist as well. Carmichael says creator and writer Julian Fellowes weaved a unique trajectory for Edith. “I think over the years he was always mobbed by fans saying, ‘please let Edith be happy!’ But I think he had this master plan that she was going to end up with such a brilliant end in the series.” In fact, Fellowes has given stellar roles to all the women on the show, many of whom have had the strongest story arcs. “We’re living in a time when we’re not going to accept just playing the generic wife in the story,” Carmichael says. “I think people want to see women’s stories, and Downton is a great example of that. So much at the heart of this show comes from these strong female characters.”

Downton has had a big impact on her life outside of work too – she found love with fellow cast member Michael C. Fox. “I can’t really picture my life without it. One of the greatest gifts it’s given me is that it’s been such amazing training. Every set I’m on now, I’m always aware of the things that I’ve learned from Downton – my first TV job – and being surrounded by Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, Jim Carter.” Before this movie, Carmichael managed to travel to Australia to shoot the psychological thriller The Secrets She Keeps. Although she never made it to Melbourne, she hopes to do so next time. For now, it’s goodbye to Downton Abbey, but she knows that it doesn’t necessarily mean forever. “We always say goodbye like it’s the last one and we’re here again, so I never want to say never.” ● DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA \ In cinemas now
