It’s sometimes difficult to find stories set in our own backyard. American culture inevitably permeates our own and movies, TV and books from afar make their way into the Australian zeitgeist. It’s refreshing then, when this phenomenon works the other way around, as it has with author Sally Hepworth’s novels. Most are set in Melbourne, and they have captured the attention of US bigwigs, including the New York Times (six have made its best-seller list) and film producer Amy Poehler. In our cover story this week, Hepworth talks about her wild imagination and her new book The Younger Wife. ●

avvy style hunter Gab Waller is regarded internationally as Australia’s best-kept fashion secret. She’s built a reputation sourcing fashion’s most coveted clothing and accessories for a swag of A-list celebrities including Khloe Kardashian, Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley and Hailey Bieber. “When our clients are searching for that impossible-to-acquire piece, we step in as their personal fashion detective,” she says. “Our clients are so forward-thinking regarding fashion, they’re not looking for what’s currently available, so that results in many unique, hard-to-obtain finds. “There have been many times where myself and my team have found ourselves scouring the smallest of boutiques trying to find that single hidden gem.” Waller says the idea for her business (run mostly through direct messages on her Instagram @gabwallerdotcom) began in 2018 when she found it hard to secure special designer pieces for herself. “As someone who had shopped luxury, I was aware luxury items have always been a more difficult

when Huntington-Whiteley credited her for finding a Celine coat she sported on Instagram. “That was definitely a gamechanging moment,” Waller says. “A large portion of my clients have the ability to shop anywhere, so the trust that I have built over the years with my clients is crucial.”
But it’s not just high-profile, glamour clients who benefit from Waller’s expert styling and sourcing services. “Being inclusive to all has been a cornerstone value of Gabriel Waller since day one,” she says. “We accept requests from all walks of life and no fashion find is too big or too small. Everyone is welcome, and we treat everyone as a VIP.” Now based in Los Angeles, Waller is closer to her international clients and her network of global retailers and brand contacts. But she is returning to Melbourne later this month to host a week of private styling sessions at Jackalope Hotel in Merricks North on the Mornington Peninsula. Waller will be curating a collection of the season’s most sought-after clothing and accessories – including the Saint Laurent Icare shopping bag and the Hermes Chypre sandals. “This is the first time I have offered an experience of this kind to my clientele in Australia, where they will be able to shop with me directly one-on-one,” she says. “I am so proud to be bringing two iconic American retailers [luxury online store FWRD and Treasures of NYC] back with me as their very first time in the Australian market. “When partnering with Jackalope, it was significant to me that we were offering guests exclusive pieces that you couldn’t pick up domestically, I believe these two shops meet that goal perfectly.” Waller says one of her top tips for women looking to add a unique piece to their wardrobe is to consider the cost per wear of the piece. “It’s so important to me to mix past seasons with current runway,” Waller adds. “Vintage is not only great for conservation but allows our clients one-of-a-kind pieces that no one else will have.” ● GAB WALLER X JACKALOPE HOTEL ● jackalopehotels.com

Home-spun stories Author Sally Hepworth’s novels bring Melbourne to life – and now Hollywood is taking note. Wo r d s
A
uthor Sally Hepworth has a way of instantly drawing you into her books with her painterly impressions of Melbourne. From Sandringham cul-de-sacs to pages that melt with descriptions of a peak summer heatwave, Hepworth weaves our city’s places and experiences into her stories. But it was the six-time New York Times bestselling author’s depiction of Brighton in her 2019 novel The Mother-in-Law that caught the attention of Hollywood. “That was my breakout novel and I think part of its success was telling a story through places I know,” Hepworth says. “Most of my books are set in bayside Melbourne – it’s where I grew up and where my mother and grandmother have grown up. It made sense to me.” American actor and producer Amy Poehler contacted Hepworth (at first on the phone, and then face to face in LA) to discuss turning it into an NBC TV thriller series. “Having Amy Poehler interested in my book came as a total surprise but I’ll take it,” Hepworth says. The series is still in development with Poehler’s production company Paper Kite, which is also responsible for the Netflix series Russian Doll. Hepworth worked in HR and event management before embarking on a full-time writing career while pregnant with her first child. “When I started writing my first book [in 2014], my publisher told me I had to set them in America if I wanted to find an American publisher,” she says. “It felt awkward doing that, but they loved what I wrote and on it went. Over time it felt like I was fudging it and craved my Australian connection.” It wasn’t until Hepworth released her fourth novel, The Family Next Door, in 2018 that her book publisher caved in to her requests to use Melbourne as her backdrop. “By that point in my career ... Liane Moriarty had set her books in Sydney and author Jane Harper had emerged with The Dry,” she says.
JA N E R O C CA
“The success of those writers really got my publisher thinking, sure, let’s see how we go if we do it too.” Hepworth’s latest book, The Younger Wife, follows the relationship of two sisters, Tully and Rachel, whose father Stephen decides to remarry to a younger woman, Heather. The domestic thriller is packed with twists and turns you won’t see coming – and captures the scenic bayside views with a back-stabbing undertone. The idea for The Younger Wife occurred while Hepworth was driving from Sandringham to visit her aunt Gwen at Box Hill Hospital. “She wanted me to get her hot water bottle from home,” Hepworth explains. “I was on the speakerphone with my brothers in the car asking why on earth would she want it. I was on EastLink when the idea clicked for the book.” Hepworth writes in a co-working space close to home and describes her lifestyle as anything but glamorous. Much of her sixth book, The Good Sister, was written at Brighton Library, from where she drew at least some inspiration – the book’s main character is a librarian. During the pandemic she found out The Good Sister was chosen by Amazon to feature on a billboard in Times Square, New York. Her only regret? Not being there to get a photo under it. Hepworth openly acknowledges she has ADHD and says having the neuro-diverse condition works well for her creative career path. “One of the joys of that is it can make you creative; the flip side is it can make you easily bored,” Hepworth says. “If I wasn’t a writer or working on a new book every year, I would have had 10 careers by now.” Her husband Christian (known affectionately online as Mr Sally Hepworth) helps her run her business and is a stay-at-home dad to their three children. Prior to Sally’s career taking off, he worked as a full-time accountant, but she says they flipped roles and now she’s the breadwinner.
“Christian is my rock and is totally understanding of my need to write,” Hepworth says. “He allows me to do this while he runs the other very important aspect of our lives.” While writing about family dysfunction is her goto, Hepworth says her own life is nothing like the troubled ones she writes about. “I grew up in a loving family,” she says. “My parents are still together and I’m very close to my brothers. I’ve always been around great relationships.” So, how does she plot her storylines set among heartbreak, maligned intentions and maddening love games and whip up a best-seller every year since 2015? “I have always had a good imagination,” Hepworth says. “Having twin brothers who always played together meant I was left to my own devices and role-played a lot on my own, I think that’s where it stems from.” While she’s committed to her career as a fulltime writer, Hepworth says she loves keeping a low profile in Australia, despite the success that’s come her way. “I’m a real introvert ... my family is my oasis.” And as for her next book, she’s heading to Portsea, where she and her family spent a lot of time at a holiday home when she was a child. “I stick to places I know the smell and feel of, so that’s where I am going next with my new book.” ●

SUCCESSION PICASSO
T
he Picasso Century exhibition makes its world premiere at the National Gallery of Victoria this winter, celebrating the iconic works of 20thcentury artist Pablo Picasso. From his blue period to cubism and surrealism, more than 80 artworks by the Spanish-born, Paris-based artist will be showcased from June 10, alongside 100 more by 60 of his contemporaries. We spoke to NGV Curator Miranda Wallace who shared some insight into the key works on show.
As the title says, this 1918 work is a portrait of a woman on an armchair. It is sketched in with paint and looks unfinished. Picasso had already embarked on his cubist adventure by this point in his career. Here he returned to a neoclassical style just after World War I. The war had been a huge rupture as many of his artist friends had to fight. The sitter is his first wife, Olga Khokhlova, whom he married in 1918. She danced with the Ballets Russes and was from an affluent Russian family who lost all their money in the revolution. At this point in his life, Picasso became more commercially accepted and he lived in a new part of Paris, Montparnasse, in a new bourgeoise social world.
This landscape painting in autumnal colours by Marie Laurencin sees her in the picture, painted as the brightest figure in a blue dress. In the centre is poet Apollinaire, who met Picasso in 1905. He was a magnetic character and captured the imagination of many artists living in the bohemian Montmartre district of Paris. Picasso is pictured here – he has an intense, dark gaze from behind. His partner is the woman second on the left. Poet Gertrude Stein also features. It makes us realise Picasso wasn’t always the big star – he was in the shadow of this poet in the early 20th century.

PABLO PICASSO \ Portrait of a woman, 1938
This work was painted in 1938, when Picasso was 57. It is from a period when his relationship with the sitter, photographer and poet Dora Maar, was solid. She was an intellectual and political artist and they had a great rapport. Her presence in this painting is quite extraordinary. She embodied the same interests Picasso had from the personal to politics and surrealist ideas of the unconscious. ●

Cuban artist Wifredo Lam met Picasso in 1938. He thought Picasso had done interesting things with African art and wanted to learn more from him. They both had an interest in surrealism – Picasso was aligned with the movement, but didn’t formally join it. This reclining, sleeping nude’s limbs are arranged in different ways, and you can’t tell what part is what. It’s a reference to Picasso’s nudes of the early ’30s.
