ike many others in their early 30s, I’m saving for a house deposit and, while I have made some inroads, what lies ahead is to choose between Tootgarook and Toorak, South Morang and South Yarra. It’s an exciting time to be studying the market – waiting and watching for the ideal time to make that first big purchase. If you’re on the hunt for your first home, are upsizing, downsizing, or a looking for a smart investment, our pages are brimming with plenty of hot properties across the city that should be high on the must-inspect list. Advice editor Daniel Butkovich offers some practical tips on how to buy into your dream postcode without stretching the budget. We explore the high rises set to shape our skyline from Southbank to St Kilda, and our interior design master, Darren Palmer, spills the secret on his favourite designers, and why you’ll love them, too.

OUR COVER Polished gem in Northcote, listed

Architect Mark Aronson of Maarch describes

his self-designed home as “life on Mars” – a modernist box in a foreign, almost alien-like landscape. “Years ago, when I was emigrating from London to Australia, I had a vivid dream that I was relocating somewhere very hot and very remote, another world with red earth like Mars,” he says. This vision was realised upon moving to a bushland block with an existing 1970s home in Boya, Western Australia. Renovations designed by Aronson saw the home extended into the bush with breakout spaces created on either side. Expansive glass panels frame views of vegetation and granite rock formations, establishing a relationship with the landscape that previously did not exist. No trees on site were touched in this process, with flame-proof materials and aluminium screens installed in case of bushfire. “We were seeking to let the building touch down gently on to the existing ground. We didn’t remove any trees or large bushes, just bolted it to the rock or footings and literally dropped it in,” Aronson says. “I have lived here for many years and feel privileged to have built my own house in this incredible landscape.” AMELIA BARNES

Steps to get into your dream suburb

L

Find an ugly duckling Properties don’t necessarily need to be rundown to be discounted. A home that isn’t styled for sale or is presented poorly is usually cheaper, and an awkward floor plan can deter many buyers, said Mayfield Property Buyers director John Carew. “It’s not going to pull on buyers’ heartstrings that much and it’s unlikely to achieve the same price premiums as the beautiful open-plan home next door,” he said. Unusual-looking houses, such as those that have lost their heritage facade through unsympathetic renovations, may be more affordable than surrounding properties, said Wakelin Property Advisory director Jarrod McCabe. Closed-in verandahs, poorly located entryways or mismatched windows are issues that can be fixed without costing a fortune. “It depends how far gone it is,” Mr McCabe said. “Those sorts of things can often be rectified very easily.” Size, shape and slope The underlying value of any property is the land on which it sits, and in many areas land comprises up to two-thirds of the value of the property. If you can find a property with a block that’s smaller than average or an unusual shape, it could knock the price down just enough to fit it into your budget, Mr Carew said.

8

GREG BRIGGS

ocation is arguably the most important factor when choosing a home, and if you’re a househunter, you probably have a dream area in mind. It might be a suburb you love that feels just beyond your grasp or a specific school catchment you’re desperate to get into. Targeting properties with turn-offs that can be easily fixed or adjusting the type of property you’re looking for may open up more possibilities. But while certain attributes of a property can make it cheaper, some bargains might be best left on the shelf.

“Battleaxe blocks always trade at a price discount,” he said. “Triangular-shaped blocks generally won’t trade for as much as their standard cousins.” Sloping blocks are also usually cheaper. “Probably the only exception to that is waterfront blocks,” Mr Carew said. Keep in mind that these properties are more affordable because their development potential is restricted and the buyer pool is limited, which can also affect resale value.

Villas and townhouses are the middle-ground between houses and apartments, and may suit budget-conscious buyers who don’t want to compromise on location, Mr McCabe said. “They’re becoming far more popular with first-home buyers, and it makes it a more affordable option to get into a desirable location,” he said. Adjusting the property type may allow you to buy into the area sooner, and if your home grows in value with the local market, it’s

“Always be really mindful of the things you can’t change with a property.” – JOHN CAREW, MAYFIELD PROPERTY BUYERS Be realistic Properties that offer a similar experience to your ideal home can allow you to live in the area you love without the high price tag. If your heart is set on a freestanding brick house, but your budget won’t stretch, you might consider a semi or duplex. Similarly, a strata-titled townhouse can be a good alternative to a terrace.

potentially easier to upgrade further down the track. What to avoid Compromising to get into an area isn’t without its risks, and buyers should be wary of bargains, Mr Carew said. “Always be really mindful of the things you can’t change with a property,” he said. “You cannot change what road you’re on, the block

size, and the aspect you have, and you can’t change your neighbours.” Buying a property on a major arterial road is usually too great a compromise, Mr Carew said. “You can’t renovate your way out of a main road.” Public transport can be a doubleedged sword, and Mr McCabe recommends avoiding properties backing directly onto train lines. “You want to be relatively close to public transport but you don’t want it right on your doorstep,” he said. The same applies for homes under flight paths and next to industrial or commercial properties, as well as houses with backyards overlooked by apartment towers, as these properties may be harder to sell in the future. “I always caution buyers against buying at any cost in a suburb,” Mr Carew said. “You’re likely to be in the same predicament as that vendor in five or 10 years’ time when you go to sell the property.” Daniel Butkovich is Domain’s National Advice Editor. Southbank moves with the times

F

irst, the good news. While some parts of the Melbourne market have declined, their first since 2012, so far this year the average Southbank apartment has remained static at $560,000. Now the bad news. While the rest of Melbourne has ridden the boom (some suburbs doubled their prices in the past five years) Southbank’s apartments rose only 2.75 per cent. Not boom, then; but not bust. Southbank’s fortunes exist in isolation from the rest of Melbourne. It is unrecognisable from the early 1990s when it began its makeover. These days, it’s Melbourne’s most densely populated suburb, but it divides Melburnians. To some, it’s brilliantly situated on the CBD’s doorstep with a thrilling mix of venues for arts and culture. To others, it’s a poorly planned blight where a lack of build cohesion

colludes with wind tunnels and cars to make it unfriendly to pedestrians. As dictated by the market, the reality is in between the two. “The market is holding up OK,” says agent Jack Li, of Woodards. “The majority of buyers choose Southbank because they want to be close to the city without actually living in the city.” Li says he’s noticed a switch in owner types. An even split between

owner-occupiers and investors has tipped in favour of the former. The City of Melbourne estimates by 2037 the population of Southbank will reach more than 48,000‚ more than 56 per cent higher than the population in 2017. And, now it has 13,752 private dwellings, but by 2037 this is expected to increase to 29,771. What does this mean for a suburb that is one of the city’s most lacking in green space? In July, Melbourne City Council announced $35 million for a long-awaited project to open up 2.5 hectares of new public space. Southbank Boulevard will become the “green spine” of the Melbourne arts precinct. Works are expected to be completed in August 2019. “News like that certainly doesn’t hurt,” says Marshall White agent Nicholas Hoo, whose high-end buyers want a lock-up-and-leave lifestyle after downsizing from the eastern suburbs.

More positive news comes from new developments applying more rigorous design principles other than the apartment-tower cliche of groundfloor shops and car park podium. From Green Spine by UN Studio and Cox Architecture, to Melbourne Square and 88 Melbourne, they’re a reaction to the oversupply of cheaper investment apartments. Jo and Matt Foster, of Sale, have a two-bedroom apartment in the Guild. They’re typical Southbank owner-investors who sometimes go to the football or enjoy the city nightlife, and other times rent it out. Jo says: “It’s close to everything, it will be great for our kids if they go to university in Melbourne. I wouldn’t buy in every part of Southbank but we couldn’t be happier with our part of Sturt Street.”

olour is a universal language. Just one colour has the power to enhance a happy mood or set a sombre tone, so it is with much deliberation that designers select a colour palette for a new building. They aim for the sweet spot between “too out there” and “too boring”, to create a space that says it all without saying too much. For most, it all starts with the sun. Architects have always been influenced by its direction and consequent shadows to create an interplay between light and shade. Experiments with reflective facades have seen the emergence of crystalline towers transformed by the sun’s ascent and descent. The sun’s path was a driving force behind the colour and shape of One Wellington, towers to be constructed at the triangle of Punt Road, Wellington Street and St Kilda Road. “The way the sun passes across the building was our inspiration, part of the geometry at One Wellington,” explains Stephen Javens, director of

architecture and interiors firm K.P.D.O. “We were very inspired by the great modernist architects, like Harry Seidler from Australia and Oscar Niemeyer from Brazil, who work with organic form. “What we wanted to do was to create a building that has a soft, organic form, has a really beautiful play of shadow and light across the facade as opposed to a linear building, where you don’t necessarily notice the sun pass across the side as you do with an organic-shaped building.” The project’s location on an island site meant it had unimpeded access to the sun’s light, which Javens saw as a perfect opportunity for something special. “What we liked was that it has fantastic exposure to natural light, from dawn through to dusk,” he says. “We thought it was a great opportunity to create a building that was affected by the changing colours of the sky, which is quite rare.

“We looked at a building that would be quite neutral and soft, so that it would potentially reflect the changing colours in the sky. So pink at dawn, and then through silvery colours during the day, and back into orangey tones at dusk.” The towers at One Wellington – one of 10 storeys and the other of 25 – will take in nearby bay views from their busy location. Letting in as much of these calming views as possible, particularly those of the horizon at sunset and sunrise, was essential, says Javens. “There’s nothing like seeing the changing colour of the sky from day to night, and when you combine that with the water – I think that’s the most beautiful thing,” he says. “It’s one of the things we’ve really worked hard to do, to just to make sure that each apartment has as much natural light as possible so that you really get the benefit of living up in the sky.” Javens and his team accentuated colour for more than just aesthetic

“We looked at a building that would be quite neutral and soft, so that it would potentially reflect the changing colours in the sky.”

Apartments can be customised to suit any style, say the developers of One Wellington.

reasons. They were trying to counteract the hustle and bustle of the traffic at ground level, he says, and create an interior sanctuary. To this end, buyers will have the choice of more than the standard dark and light colour schemes ordinarily offered at off-the-plan

apartments. Instead they can opt for one of three palettes: minimal, dark and chromatic. Neutral, layered colours can be found in the minimal theme, while the dark offers light and shadow, and chromatic is all about bold individuality. Apartments can still

be customised to suit any style. Interior personalisation will be matched by individuality outside. Veteran Australian artist and curator Robert Owen will contribute colour in an unusual way. By painting the underside of the podium building balconies, anyone at street level will

be able to look up to see a kaleidoscope of colour. The overall effect will be a public work of art that resembles many coloured pixels. It’s a complete departure from the mix of office and residential buildings that formerly occupied the site, says developer Les Smith, managing director of LAS Property Group. “We find specific sites that we like and we spend a lot of time engaging with our design team to get the right outcome,” he says. “It is a prominent site and we’ve spent an enormous amount of time thinking about how to build it externally. “We pulled down the old buildings, buildings virtually redundant, that needed to be moved on, and we’re creating what we consider to be a very high in design and internal amenity residential development.” The project will house 200 apartments and include a pool, spa, sauna and gym. There will also be a cinema, residents’ lounge, a roundthe-clock concierge and dry and coolstorage at ground level for grocery deliveries. From the outside in, One Wellington will inhabit a highly visible site, totally in sync with colourful St Kilda.

An entire team of these building professionals work at Comdain Homes to help bring new projects, including knockdowns, to life. Comdain offers bespoke home designs rather than standard blueprints, and unlike most architects, Comdain’s builders and estimators can provide certainty about costs. I

’m often asked about my inspiration and, apart from nature and the world around me, it’s always good to see how other people in the industry are doing things that are new and exciting, from product retailers and designers, to the work of other designers. I don’t like to compare my work to others, so it makes sense that all of my favourite designers do things in a completely different way to me. Seeing the way others interpret and utilise materials, patterns, colours and styles excites me no end.

Stacey Kouros @staceykourosdesign

The ones to watch

Famed and talented designer Greg Natale’s protege in the latter part of the 2000s, Kouros has been running her own show for more than a decade and has long been my go-to oracle as a sure-fire insight into what is going to be cool in coming years.

She’s literally years ahead of the curve, loving Memphis design and terrazzo when I still thought both were without merit. Her work is diverse, patterned and coloured but also nuanced with the sophistication that every high-end home would benefit from. Watch her work for a look into what might be coming just around the trend corner.

Mim Fanning @mimdesignstudio

Contemporary Australian interiors don’t get much more curvaceous and cutting edge than those of Melbourne’s Mim Design studio. For the best examples of joinery and a unique and sculptural approach to kitchens, island benches and fireplaces you need look no further than this.

Romy Alwill

Arguably one of Australia’s most successful and talented designers, North’s studio creates bespoke interiors fit for the world stage. From hotels to super yachts and the luxury homes of the uber wealthy, the level of detail in her spaces blows my mind. Watch her work for interiors with the refinement of jewellery.

@alwillinteriors

With a foot in both relaxed chic and high-end luxe aesthetics, Alwill’s interior spaces are serene, refined, pared back without being minimalistic, and have a nuance of palette and form that relaxes and excites me in equal measure. With common collaborations with Luigi Rosselli, the interiors are always in line with the beauty of the architecture.

landscape-led project can elicit the most liveable al fresco area; one that provides light, space, connectivity and high style. The Grounds, in Ivanhoe East, achieves this and includes environmental responsibility. It comprises four boutique apartment buildings: Wilfred, Boulevard, Wamba and Oak Terraces. Each is in a different location, offering north and westfacing aspects providing plentiful morning and afternoon sun. “The native landscape of The Grounds informed the project’s architecture,” says Oliver Mayger, of Architectus. “The sensitivity of the site, its topography and personality all determined the development’s overarching design.” With landscape architect Matthew MacKay, of Aspect Studios, the first to put pen to paper, Mayger looked for ways to elevate the importance of the landscape in the development. “We focused on carefully sitting the

buildings within the existing falls of the site,” he says. “At points, the buildings are set into the hill, forming protected communal and private courtyards. At others, they sit gently on, or slightly above, the landscape. There is an undeniably strong connection between the architecture and landscape of the project.” The overarching design of The Grounds was influenced by Ivanhoe East’s place in Australian modernist architecture.

“Ivanhoe and its surrounding suburbs were entwined in the development of the Merchant Builders project-housing movement, and the nearby Eaglemont estate was designed by renowned design duo Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin,” says MacKay. Exotic plants and native trees, including yellow gums, snow gums, red ironbarks and spotted gums exemplified The Grounds’ original

landscape. “Our initial design approach sought to echo this combination of indigenous plants and exotic species,” says MacKay. “The landscape is part ‘bush school’, which is inspired by the early Australian native garden designs of Gordon Ford and Edna Walling and part modernism-inspired.” During planning, priority was given to protecting the established trees and existing landscape. “The trees became actual markers for each of the buildings. Their walls responded to those locations, which in turn allowed the trees to become something beautiful to look at for the residents. They also provide fantastic canopies throughout The Grounds that are used to link the buildings whilst providing shade and shelter.” MacKay says a proposed planting includes more than 200 grasses and groundcovers. “It is our wish to continue to draw on references to modernist Australian architecture and landscape design,” Mayger says.

aving built a distinct aesthetic in her role as art director at The Design Files, it’s no surprise that the two-bedroom apartment of Annie Portelli in North Melbourne is full of unique creative flair. After taking possession of the apartment two years ago, Portelli got straight to work on a DIY renovation, with the help of her dad and a few handy helpers. “When I first moved in I gutted the entire place, and then had a minimeltdown when all that was left was a cold box with a concrete floor and popcorn ceiling,” she recalls. Design decisions were made mainly based on cost and efficiency – such as the simple cabinetry and shelving, built using robust marine-grade plywood. The most distinctive feature of the home is its unique custom-made terrazzo benchtops. “My kitchen benchtop is my absolute favourite thing in my house,” she enthuses. “It’s my pride and joy!” Portelli designed this incredible feature using broken shards of stone and marble sourced from all over

town, and even off-cuts from her parents’ kitchen. “It’s nice to know I will always have a little bit of my family home right here in my house,” she says. The apartment is furnished with a mix of affordable pieces from Ikea and Muji, second-hand finds from Gumtree, along with treasured items by local makers and friends. “I’m super lucky to have a bunch of friends who love a good trade,” Portelli explains. “My dining table by Thomas Lentini and dresser by Dustin Fritsche of Softer Studio were all based on trades – carpentry skills in exchange for my graphic design skills. Win-win!” The apartment complex itself is a brilliant example of mid-century design at its best. Described as an urban forest when it was first built in 1959, the apartment complex known as Hotham Gardens was originally designed for the Victorian Housing Commission. Designed by architects Anne Reynolds and John Mockridge in collaboration with landscape architect Beryl Mann, the low-rise development aimed to enhance the wellbeing of the residents through

A beachside marvel

PRUE RUSCOE

17th-century lithograph of five swimming fishes, one with a human face, is the unlikely inspiration behind this light-filled coastal home with art at its heart. The mystical image comes from an illustrated version of an Islamic text – Marvels of Things Created and Miraculous Aspects of Things Existing – written four centuries earlier that documents the wonders of the natural world. It is an unusual muse for a sprawling contemporary residence in the exclusive beachside suburb of Clovelly in eastern Sydney, but the owners – a pair of art collectors with three children – wanted their home to evoke the same sense of freedom, tranquillity and whimsy.

Presented with a copy of the picture as part of the client brief, renowned architect Madeleine Blanchfield set to work on distilling its spirit into the extensive project that essentially built an entirely new house from an existing skeleton. “It was quite a sweet little artwork – on one side there was the aesthetic, [but] on the other there was a deeper, underlying theme: it was how the clients wanted the house to feel,” Blanchfield says. “[The lithograph] accompanied a detailed brief loaded with practical elements, such as light and functionality, but that was the layer over the top.”

A boutique collection of homes by Fender Katsalidis On the cusp of the CBD, a new chapter begins at Victoria Square. From acclaimed architects Fender Katsalidis, VS.03 offers spacious and light-filled one, two or three bedroom homes from which to explore the surrounding delights. With architecture inspired by the rich history of the suburb and its significant river, Victoria Square is a new landmark address with a real depth of character.

The artfully inspired Clovelly House by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects.

The project, which was shortlisted in the most recent Interior Design Excellence Awards, began with stripping back the original midcentury house until all that remained were structural columns and beams. From this point, Blanchfield and her team installed large windows overlooking courtyards, flooding the interior with natural light. This, however, created a problem: the client was left with few spaces to hang an extensive art collection.

Blanchfield responded with an unusual solution: if the client had limited opportunity to display paintings, then the house itself must become a piece of art. From an Alice in Wonderlandinspired staircase to custom-made dining and coffee tables and the cactus-print wallpaper in the powder room, there is a strong emphasis on unusual and handcrafted features.

The interior is based on a palette of soft neutrals, so as not to compete with those artworks that are on display. The restrained colours allow the client to rotate their collection. “The art collection was so strong that we didn’t want anything to detract from that,” Blanchfield says. “We didn’t design for specific artworks. We tried to design a space that could take a lot of different things.”

Family value in the west

I

f there are two things Melburnians love right now, it’s coffee and plants. Succulents, monsteras and devil’s ivy, our interiors are overflowing with pot plants. One For The Crow, a vegan eatery and nursery in Maidstone, combines both. Co-owner Taze Brodel and his wife Stephanie opened the venue in February. “We wanted to open a space that combined what we both love, in a lush green space celebrating plants on the plate and plants to take home,” Taze Brodel says. “We love the west side and went looking for the perfect spot for our cafe nursery. We settled on our spot in Maidstone after looking in Footscray, West Footscray and Seddon – but were priced out.” Theirs is a common story. Offering proximity to the CBD, improved

18

DOM A IN

infrastructure and relative value compared with neighbouring suburbs, Maidstone has become a drawcard for families looking for space without the price tag of other suburbs within 10 kilometres of the CBD. “Our spot in Maidstone ticked all the boxes: affordable price for a wellsized space, an unreached part of suburbia without many cafe options, and plenty of parking out front,” says Brodel, who lives onsite. “Maidstone is another great part of the west, very community-oriented. It’s full of young families and beautiful parks and open spaces.” Fellow local Jo Harvey, who runs Footscray watering hole Back Alley Sally’s, agrees. She’s lived in Maidstone with her husband and two kids for 12 years now. “It’s a fabulous community, especially for those with

young children. Quality healthcare, great schools to choose from and the strongest community group we have ever encountered,” she says. Domain’s data indicates that while the median price for a threebedroom house in nearby Footscray is $905,000, Maidstone’s median for an equivalent home is $795,000. Though house prices have risen steadily over the past couple of years, the suburb’s appeal hasn’t had the same sharp rise as other inner-west locales. For those at that point in their property journey, Hampstead Park is a new development of townhouses in Maidstone. Set in a leafy pocket, the masterplanned precinct will combine a mix of stylish townhouses, green spaces featuring a 2400-square-metre

central parkland, and a new retail and hospitality precinct. Developed by Bewise Property Group, the 157 three and four-bedroom townhouses have been designed by architects ClarkeHopkinsClarke with interiors by Adele Bates. “The simple fact is that it is near impossible to find a development of this quality, at this price, only eight kilometres from the city,” says InPlace sales and marketing manager Andrew Steele, who is handling sales and marketing for Hampstead Park. “It’s getting increasingly harder to find a home where you can own the land you are on this close to the city, with families being pushed further and further out.” Hampstead Park has been designed to complement its tree-lined streetscape. Textural exteriors feature timber panels, mesh walls and greenery. “There are also plans for retail, cafes, medical, childcare and recreation on the site, creating a vibrant hub within the development,” Steele says. In addition to all this on residents’ doorsteps, the development is well located. “The area offers so much. Highpoint Shopping Centre is only a fiveminute walk away, Vic Uni and the Maribynong Aquatic Centre are close by,” Steele adds. “Couple this with access to the beautiful Maribyrnong river walk and you have a truly connected location that offers it all.”

The Retreat is a luxury hotel nestled in a lava field at the Blue Lagoon, Iceland.

In the land of fire and ice

I

celand is the last place you’d expect to find a lagoon, let alone one as warm as 40 degrees. Yet this is where the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon are located, in the surreal setting of a lava desert. The Blue Lagoon attracts as many as 700,000 tourists every year‚ more than twice Iceland’s population. That number is set to rise thanks to the Retreat, a new, high-end 62-room hotel built into the moss-covered lava fields that surround the lagoon. Iceland’s Basalt Architects painstakingly excavated the volcanic landscape to ensure the hotel nestled into the lava. In some cases the team was forced to rethink the design when excavations revealed the underlying rock would not support the planned structure. At other times, they discovered lava so beautiful that they decided to incorporate it into the design. The end result bonds geology and construction, not to mention creating stunning views of the lagoon and surrounding lava formations. Sydney architect Malcolm Carver says the hotel’s design showcases this unique scenery.

“To understand what this landscape is like‚ it’s wild, it’s misty, it’s black,” he says. “There’s no landscape other than black lava, and therefore it’s a moonscape and it’s rugged.” Interiors, designed in partnership with Basalt Architects and Design Group Italia, reflect the surrounds. Moss green, lava black and snow white are found throughout. Carver, who recently led a Travelrite architecture tour that included the Blue Lagoon, says the interiors of the hotel are trademark Scandinavian. “There’s a lot of use of timber and extensive use of glass,” he says.

“It’s the typical simplicity of that Scandinavian modern look, which has captivated the world for 50 years.” Designers have cleverly integrated lava into the interiors, from the service desks in reception to a chef’s table in the Moss Restaurant. The wine cellar has walls of exposed rock. At up to $3800 a night, rooms at the Retreat are aimed at the wealthy. Guests at the most upmarket room, the Lagoon Suite, have access to their own private lagoon. Plus there’s all the spoils of the nearby spa, restaurant, fitness centre and a

gallery displaying 20th-century Icelandic ceramic art. Less well-off tourists can soak in the waters of the Blue Lagoon, a 45-minute drive south-west of Reykjavik, from $87 for the day. Bathing suits are mandatory, but so too are thermals. The temperature outside hovers between 0 and 10 degrees, while the lagoon itself is between 37 and 40 degrees. The waters are rich in silica, algae, and minerals, and are said to have benefits for skin conditions such as psoriasis. The lagoon formed in the 1970s when overflow from a geothermal power plant, Svartsengi Resource Park, ran into the lava field. Engineers expected the water to seep through the lava and return to volcanic aquifers. But sedimentation made the lava field watertight and the lagoon formed. Locals began to bathe there in the 1970s. Melbourne-based sculptor Dora Rognvaldsdottir, who grew up in Garoabaer near Reykjavik, remembers the lagoon being a lowkey party destination for teens. “I think I probably discovered it for the first time in 1977,” she says. “It was just a pool out in the lava field, there wasn’t even a road there. We relied on the headlights of the cars or a torch to find our way.” Word got around during the 1980s and the Blue Lagoon slowly transformed from a locals’ secret into a tourism bonanza. In the 1990s, a skin care range was released and the spa was built, and in 2012 National Geographic put it in its list of 25 Wonders of the World. In 2015, the Reykjanes Peninsula, home to the lagoon, was named a UNESCO Global Geopark. The peninsula covers the Mid-Atlantic Ridge‚ the tectonic boundary where the North American and Eurasian plates converge. The terrain is teeming with craters, fissures, mud pools, steam vents and hot springs. The Blue Lagoon, along with the Northern Lights, is one of the top tourist attractions in Iceland. Colour There was a definite nod to a moodier colour palette in contestants’ kitchens, with Kerrie and Spence and Bianca and Carla both opting for dark cabinetry. Colour and concept manager at Haymes Paint, Wendy Rennie, says the dark kitchen is a trend we’ll see continue into 2019. “Dark kitchens and mixed materiality is the key to the new aesthetic,” she says. “Matt black is still the number one trend in kitchens. The key is to utilise these materials in a way that embraces the intimacy and warmth they can provide through mixing materials, to ensure they feel like the heart of the home and not too overwhelming or stoic.” Interior designer Camilla Molders agrees that darker palettes will continue to be popular, while also predicting a return to colour in the kitchen next year. “Colour is coming back. People are getting more comfortable with using it in their cabinetry and splashbacks.”

Appliances Chef Massimo Mele says “there’s always a need for ease and efficiency in the kitchen”. Mele predicts that we’ll see a growing demand for induction cookers for their efficiency and ease to clean. “Another growing trend is cooking with a steam oven. The Electrolux oven is great for quick, delicious, stress-free cooking with minimal washing up,” he says.

f you believe the real estate adage that kitchens sell houses, then last week on The Block could be the best indication yet as to who will win the series. Kerrie and Spence took out the top prize with their elegant, high-tech kitchen, while Hayden and Sara made it into second place for their kitchen’s great orientation. Hans and Courtney, however, were criticised over the placement of their kitchen and its disconnection from the main living area. Functionality, natural materials and moody colour palettes have been among the key trends on this series, but what can we expect to see for kitchens in 2019?

Kerrie and Spence opted for a moody palette, below.

Heading for the dark side

In a nod to minimalism, Molders notes the rise in invisible appliances. “I’ve seen clients use stove tops that have an inbuilt fan in the benchtop that pops up so you don’t have to have a rangehood above the stove. It’s a lot neater.”

Natural materials While not a new trend, the use of natural materials will dominate in 2019 as people continue to make more sustainable and eco-friendly design choices.

“The use of natural materials is still important, especially granite and marble tops. We used bamboo as the cabinetry source and a timber bench top [in a client’s home]. Years on it’s still perfect,” says Molders.

butler’s pantry to house all our kitchen appliances, and mounting the steam oven and microwave above the bench have been essential to keeping everything safe while still accessible.”

Functionality

Trends to farewell

While not a “trend” in itself, kitchen functionality was a hot topic when it came judging last week’s rooms. Despite their kitchen being named one of the show’s most beautiful, Jess and Norm were marked down to third place for the functional problems their room presented. When it comes to designing the layout of a kitchen, Molders says it’s best to stick to the tried and tested. “The golden triangle just makes such complete sense, otherwise it’s bad planning. You need functional things around. Your dishwasher needs to be near your sink, and rubbish and compost bins need to be accessible.” As a chef and renovator of three kitchens to date, Mele says you can’t underestimate careful planning. “Ensuring everything has a place makes our lives so much easier. For example, hiding the rubbish bin in the island bench, introducing a

Just like the all-white bedroom, the kitchen is another room of the home that’s heading to the dark side. “I think there is definitely going to be a break away from the ‘all white’ kitchen. They [kitchens] will start to diversify with mixed materials and mid-toned neutrals, moving toward the darker trends for those who don’t want to go completely dark,” says Rennie. Coming in last place for their bad layout, Hans and Courtney also took a gamble and opted for metallic cabinetry. However, this is one trend Molders believes won’t date well. “I’m wary about using too many metals, and coloured tapware ... When you start seeing too much of it, you know it’s a dud.” See Domain judge Alice Stolz on The Block every Wednesday night and head to domain.com.au/the-block for the behind the scenes news.
