R E B O R N. A Signature by Metricon home is always remarkable: the pinnacle of personal achievement, crafted to suit your personal sense of style and needs. Which is why an all-new Signature design is always an eagerly awaited event. Riviera triumphantly delivers a genuine breakthrough in bespoke home design. This luxury home is avowedly stylish, sleek and modern, with a dramatic, bold street presence. Yet it also offers practical family living built in to every fine detail. Striking and substantial spaces abound wherever you look: the expansive open plan entertainer’s kitchen with butler’s pantry overlooks a massive dining room situated at the heart of the home surrounded by an extra-large alfresco entertaining space. Indeed, the home can be completely opened to create seamless integration between indoors and outdoors. Upstairs, discover an abundance of riches. An extravagant master suite with private balcony, lavish resort-style ensuite and spacious walk-in-robe, a media room, and three other substantial bedrooms all with their own ensuite and walk-in robes. In short, a brilliantly designed home that will also be a pleasure to live in. So why not discuss your personal version of the Riviera with us today? And make it uniquely yours.

hether you are styling a property for sale or simply running out of puff when it comes to constantly fluffing your collection of limp old couch cushions, Darren Palmer’s A to Z of style will suit you to the letter. Palmer, an accomplished interior designer, judge on The Block and our fortnightly design columnist, has collated a glossary of some commonlyused words that will spring up in conversations with any stylist you hire or, if you are the DIY type, while you browse Instagram for #inspiration. His feature story is a highlight of New Living this week. If you are designinclined, it is hard to resist trends when they look so lush on social media (remember “Scandustrial”, a hybrid of Scandinavian and industrial?) but this week, we have a property just for the classicists. In The Design Files, discover a romantically refined home and an owner who hasn’t been seduced by fleeting fads.

Kyoto’s imperial palace provided the inspiration

for this grand home in one of eastern Australia’s most prestigious harbourside suburbs. Visitors enter via a stone entrance and through a panelled door made of zinc. The five-bedroom, Michael Dysart-designed house is built around a two-storey atrium, with impressive formal rooms and welcoming informal spaces, including indoor bamboo plantings. The kitchen draws on the Japanese ideal of purity. Masterfully concealed spaces allow the beauty of the lines to take centre stage. Topiary-lined lawns and a heated pool provide a lush retreat, while the outdoor living spaces are oriented to capture iconic views. There’s a separate floor with a gym, media room, bathroom, second kitchen and access to the 10-car garage in the home, which has a price guide of $35 million. “It integrates beautifully with its natural environment with a palpable sense of peace and privacy,” Alison Coopes, of Agency by Alison Coopes, says. s there a better time in Melbourne than early autumn? As the days close in and the evening chill settles, this is really the time our beautiful city shines. Some of our blue-ribbon ’burbs look especially brilliant at this time of year, and you’ve got to hand it to Brighton, all bay shimmer and leafy beauty. They have the houses to match around here. The ground floor pad is completely separate from the one above. The entry takes you straight into a grand foyer. The fine French oak parquetry is luminous and blackbanded internal glass allows light to flow from the north-facing open-plan areas back to the entrance. First left off the entry hall is a study with a white marble hearth anchoring timber bookshelves. Head down the passage and bank left to the luxe space of the main bedroom. It’s deeply impressive with a dark shaker-style feature wall.

There are two more bedrooms, each with a sleek en suite and plenty of storage. The bedroom facing south has a private courtyard too. Head north, where full-height glass in the living area gives you a great view of the lap pool to the side.

Large sliding panes open off the dining area to the outdoor space where a columned pergola covers a paved area and built-in barbecue. The kitchen has a long, white-stone island bench and gleaming marble splashback. Behind it is a butler’s pantry with bench space. A lift in the foyer takes you to the subterranean garage, and a media room and cellar for those times when only red wine and a movie will do.

Located within close proximity to Martin Street shops and the bay, the home exudes single level luxurious living with meticulous attention to detail.

W

hen you understand the origin of great design, and its basic vernacular, you’ll find it so much easier to apply to your own home. Here’s my quick and easy guide.

Armoire A large, two-door standing cupboard commonly for storing clothes, often wider than an adult’s arm-span.

Art deco Popular from the 1920s into the ’30s, identified by its characteristic geometric shapes, visual drama, colour, metallic finishes and mirrors. Elements reflect influences from African tribal designs, Mesoamerican forms, Greco-Roman patterning and materials, and ancient Egyptian forms and stylisation.

Art nouveau Inspired by natural forms and structures, art nouveau is best recognised in the iconic French metro station signs. The style enjoyed popularity between 1890 and 1910.

Arts & crafts movement Formed by artisans and practitioners between circa 1880 to 1920 as a rejection of impersonal, massproduced objects. It focused on workmanship to emphasise integrity and quality.

DOM A IN

Banquette An upholstered bench along a wall.

Baroque A highly extravagant and ornate style of architecture, music and art seen from the early 17th century until the mid-18th century, characterised by contrast, movement, exuberant detail, deep colours and grandeur.

Bauhaus The famous German art and design school which operated between 1919 and 1933 that was world-renowned for its combination of crafts and arts, creating a modernist movement throughout the fields of art, architecture, and industrial and interior design.

Bespoke Something made specifically for you, to your requirements.

Chinoiserie

Egyptian cotton

A long thick pillow, often cylindrical in form.

A European interpretation and imitation of Chinese and East Asian decorative details across design, architecture, literature and culture.

Chintz

Coffered ceiling

A style of fabrics with its origin in India, printed with designs featuring flowers and other patterns, typically on plain backgrounds.

A series of sunken panels in the shape of a rectangle, square or octagon in a ceiling.

An extra-long staple cotton fibre generally considered of the highest quality in the world due to its strength, softness and colour retention. Pima or Supima cotton is another highly regarded extra-long staple cotton fibre grown in the US.

Bolster

Dado rail A type of moulding fixed horizontally to the wall around the perimeter of the room also known as a chair rail.

Federation A period of architecture or architectural style referencing the years between 1890 and 1915, aligning with the federation of the Australian colonies.

Darren Palmer’s

Flock

Kilim

Martindale

Powdered wool or wool-like synthetic powder applied to cloth or paper which is used to simulate velvet cutouts creating a soft, raised effect. Can be applied to wallcoverings and other objects.

A flat, traditional tapestry-woven carpet or rug.

The rub rate with which the durability of fabrics is judged. The higher the martindale or rub rate, the more durable it will be, applied to low human physical contact features such as drapery, or high contact items such as commercial furniture.

Grasscloth Textured wallpaper woven from generally natural fibres, identifiable through its textured appearance and visible and deliberate joins between panels.

Hue

Laminate Lamination is a technique of fusing multiple layers of material to create a composite material. Often laminates mimic the look and texture of authentic materials such as timber, metal or stone.

LED Light-emitting diode, a type of semiconductor that emits a light when current flows through it.

The singular colour from within the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

Monochromatic

An item that adds to contrast and appeal in the form of a statement piece, artwork, colour, pattern, texture or lighting, providing variation from what could otherwise be a mundane collection or space.

Occasional furniture

The Japanese approach to the celebration of the beauty in imperfection.

An aged finish acquired through the oxidisation or exposure to elements of copper, bronze or metals, leather, timber and some stones.

Jacquard

Pelmet

Fabrics created using a loom process which raises each warp thread independently of the other threads.

Framework that is designed to conceal the tracks and headers of curtains or blinds. They also serve as a physical barrier above curtains to prevent cold or hot air permeating a room.

A long, shiny and soft vegetable fibre that can be spun into course threads.

A synthetic fabric with a linen-like appearance, but with the likelihood of better UV resistance and flame retardancy.

Trevira

Consisting of a single colour, be it white, black or any colour in the spectrum. You can achieve a monochromatic look by using colours of the same hue but with a variation of tone.

Furniture pieces such as side tables, coffee tables, consoles and lounge chairs.

Interest

The number of threads per square inch. A higher number of threads doesn’t always mean a better quality, as a thicker fibre may allow less threads per square inch, but provide a better feel.

A thin skin of real timber usually applied to MDF board (mediumdensity fibreboard) applied to kitchen cabinets and other joinery.

Wabi sabi

Warp and weft Fabrics are comprised of two basic threads – the warp is lengthwise yarns which are held stationary under tension on a loom; the weft is threaded over and under from one side to the other.

White price The price of an upholstered piece of furniture without the fabric included. HomeSpace by Darren Palmer (Murdoch Books, RRP $39.99).

rom glitzy highrises in the city to modest weekenders in the Yarra Valley, the Yarra River wields an extensive influence over Melbourne’s architecture. The latest project to fall under its spell is in the affluent streets of Toorak, where architects have incorporated curves and textures to imitate the city’s famous river. Edition, on Lansell Road, is a boutique complex of just three apartments. “We took cues from the site’s proximity to the Yarra River and the

bending of the river and we drew that out as an idea in the early stages of the design,” says Dom Cerantonio, managing principal at Cera Stribley Architects. James Xeu has been serving up all day breakfasts to Toorak locals at popular The Dihnersaw and his Fionsay cafe for four years.

The main bedroom opens to a private balcony and features a classic fireplace surrounded by timber veneer wall panels and bronze shelves. The luxe feel extends to the en suite, fitted out with travertine, fluted glass and marble. The Botanic apartment is found on the lower ground and has a double-height, 6.5-metre void around a spiral staircase. The full-height glass wall looks onto a courtyard.

The Arc, located between the other two apartments, is a single-floor apartment with a courtyard aspect. In a series of ticks for downsizers, Edition is in the heart of Toorak. To the north lies the Yarra, while shops and eateries are to the south. “Probably 30 to 40 per cent of our customers are retirees,” says James Xeu, owner of cafe The Dihnersaw and his Fionsay on Toorak Road.

he word downsizing can conjure up images of a small home with little in the way of luxury. But many are finding they are upgrading, rather than downgrading, their digs when they move to a smaller, more manageable home. Ditching existing issues such as inefficient heating and leaking roofs for a modern home is a step towards a more enjoyable lifestyle, says John Coen, managing director of Comdain Homes. “Downsizers want to be living in a comfortable house that is low maintenance,” he says. Comdain Homes designs custombuilt homes, including knockdownrebuilds for home owners who want to upgrade to a new home on their existing land. Downsizers can create a unique home with Comdain’s architectural design team or choose from the BluePrint range of ready-to-build, fixed-price architecturally designed homes.

n architect’s memories of family visits to Italy form the inspiration behind this pastelhued confection of a dwelling. The building – a renovated and extended Victorian cottage in Melbourne’s Hawthorn – is home to a professional couple in their 40s. Architect Stefan Bagnoli, who won the single residential category at last year’s Dulux Colour Awards for the project, employs a deft use of colour to unite the original building with its 21st century addition. A palette of soft lilacs, blush pinks and pale blues creates a sense of continuity as one moves from the front of the house to the rear.

The overall effect is tempered with understated, minimal designs such as the freestanding custom joinery that features throughout the interior. Elements such as the polished concrete flooring, black timber cabinetry and brass detailing in the kitchen add a further contrasting note that helps balance out the sorbet shades. “The colours link through the house,” Bagnoli says. “It tells a story.” In coming up with the design, Bagnoli says he was inspired by his Italian heritage, particularly the shades used in traditional villas. “My father is Italian, and we used to go back there a lot,” he says.

A west-facing, conical skylight filters the harsh sun for a subtle effect inside.

“I spent a lot of my youth in Italy, particularly in Rome, and the project reflects the colours used in traditional Italian, and especially Roman, villas.” While it is the pale blossom hues of the interior that first capture the visitor’s attention, Bagnoli also uses colour in more subtle, unexpected ways, such as in the pair of tilted conical skylights perched atop the house. The interior of the skylight that captures the morning sun is painted yellow so as to throw a warm glow over the breakfast table in the morning.

Conversely, the skylight that faces the west is blue on the inside in order to filter down the intense endof-day sunshine. Bagnoli admits that his bold creative direction for the project made his client nervous at first. “When the pink went up, she was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s a bit too Hello Kitty’ – there were moments when she was pushing back and a little bit scared,” he says. However, these days, the client is very much in love with her new home. “She sends me pictures taken at different times of day, in different light, saying, ‘Look at it from this angle, look at it from that angle’,” Bagnoli says. bagnoli.co

Morning

I do like a good sleep in, but I don’t mind getting up early if I have a flight to catch or to get to the gym. If I’m at home, I’ll get up at about eight o’clock and go to the gym. My trainer is on a beautiful beach in Cronulla, so I’ll look out at the water when I’m training and then go jump in for a swim.

or some, comfort is found in the daily rhythm of a set routine. For musician Dan Sultan, it’s found in the divergences. “Inspiration is everywhere, all around. I find if I get too comfortable it starts to make me a bit uncomfortable, so it’s important to keep moving in new directions.” In the past nine months, Sultan has been focused on healthy changes to his routine, including not drinking, exercising more and embracing the quiet moments. “If I’m on the road, there is often quite a bit of downtime – if I get to the hotel and Antiques Roadshow is on and I’m in my tracksuit pants, I’m happy.” From taking a little bit of home with him as he tours for his new album Aviary Takes, to embracing the mellow side of life, he shares the ins and outs of his changing days.

Mid morning

Most days will start off with emails and maybe a few phone calls or an interview or two. My schedule can be pretty mapped out, but I’m also quite free to take it as comes. The guitar is always sitting around the house and I’ll just pick it up when the moment strikes. Everyone has their own little quirks and approaches, there is certainly no right or wrong way, but for me, I enjoy the fluidity and can write at any point during the day. We have just moved house so I haven’t had the opportunity to set up my space properly yet … having a series of writing sessions in my own space can be really rewarding. Whether it’s scheduled at a studio for half a day, or whether it’s seizing a moment that strikes, creation is the priority.

The evenings I’m home, I keep it simple. Generally the end of the day will be on the couch, watching television and having a bit of dinner. There is a lot of television involved in my day – being dyslexic has meant reading hasn’t been an enjoyable experience for me, so I’ll watch documentaries and that’s how I retain information and learn.

THE DESIGN FILES B y LU CY FE AG INS

A family home of understated appeal Who: Interior designer Melissa Marshall, and husband James, with their daughters Romy, 5, and Eva, 3, and a Hungarian Vizsla called Winnie. What: A refined and expansive renovation of a century-old sandstone home. Where: Bellevue Hill, NSW.

I

nterior designer Melissa Marshall and husband James purchased this sandstone home three years ago, but only moved in just over a year ago. Located in Bellevue Hill, just minutes from busy Bondi, the property is surprisingly private, and serves this (soon-to-be-growing!) family perfectly. The home underwent a massive overhaul before the family moved in, and Marshall’s interior design flair is evident in every corner of the home. She says the renovations maintained the original sandstone and most of the exterior structure, but they “opened the whole house internally by removing walls and heightening and widening doorways”. Four new doors connect the back of the house to the garden, and link to an extended veranda and pool. Inside, every surface is new, including the doors and joinery. The entrance foyer showcases artwork by Sidney Nolan and an ornate side table from Formations. The tufted leather ottoman in the living space was designed by Melissa.

The best place for your first place is Burwood Brickworks. The Garden Apartments at Burwood Brickworks offer thoughtful floorplans that maximise light and views. With an abundance of amenity at your doorstep including a plethora of restaurants, Woolworths, a cinema, 2,000sqm rooftop urban farm and 2.5 hectares of green space, live in a lifestyle precinct like no other.

The renovations also converted a previously external element into an interior feature, through enclosing the stunning portico to create a large foyer entrance. Custom steel doorways welcome guests to the house, and bring a contemporary edge to the century-old sandstone structure. Marshall works from home, and has used her interior design expertise to create a calm and peaceful house and workspace that is also robust enough for kids to play in. “I love a home that looks interesting and unique, but that you can live in,” she says. “It has to be practical.” The understated, refined aesthetic here has been achieved through the use of Mediterranean sandstone, and a soft, muted colour scheme. This serene palette allows for treasured artworks and objects to really sing, including the stunning Lindfield Gardens painting by Brett Whiteley which Marshall highlights as a particular favourite. Other special items include the Formations dining room table, that she admits to dreaming about “for years before I even had a spot for it”, and the Den-Holm custom-designed table in the entrance, that “is so dramatic and sculptural it looks and feels like art”.

And big as in the high-profile architecture practice Bjarke Ingels Group, which has designed the eyecatching project King Toronto. The building sits at the meeting point of three neighbourhood parks, near the towering central business district and the low-rise Northwest.

King Toronto rises as sets of pixels arranged from the ground up on a block that is also home to three heritage buildings, which will be preserved. Each pixel is the size of a room, rotated 45 degrees from the street grid to increase exposure to light and air. The roof surface is manipulated into mountainous forms up to 16 storeys. This shape invites sunlight into the building and creates space for terraces attached to each unit – a

splash of plant life in the inner city. On the ground level, the pixels are raised in some sections, allowing pedestrians to criss-cross the site. The new public plaza has two distinct zones: a lushly landscaped forest next to a hard-surfaced court. Danish architect Bjarke Ingels cites the Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie as an inspiration for the 57,000-square-metre Toronto project.

Safdie’s Habitat 67 building in Montreal, completed in 1967, explored how prefabricated modular units could be used in densely populated cities. It also attempted to incorporate some of the best qualities of a suburban home into an urban highrise building. “With King Toronto, we wanted to find an alternative to the tower and podium you see a lot of in Toronto and revisit some of Safdie’s revolutionary ideas,” Ingels says.

Ahead of the curve in emerging Moscow

“It would be strange if one of the most diverse cities in the world had the most homogenous architecture.” The plans were approved in September. Ingels is known for his highly innovative architecture, such as a ski slope on top of a power plant. This latest project has polarised observers. Some have praised the design as a bold new landmark, while others have questioned its appropriateness. “This proposal makes Godzilla look like a social worker,” remarked one reader on the widely read Dezeen blog. Another wrote: “A mountainshaped cellular gelatinous blob straight out of a low budget 1950s horror film. Run!” Sydney architect Shaun Carter, of Carter Williamson, says context is fundamentally important when designing buildings. “Just imagine if every building was trying to be or compete with the Sydney Opera House,” Carter says. “It would devalue the Opera House and I doubt would make a very good city.”

Most architectural works don’t stand out or, if they do, it is because of “subtle, clever and skilful design”. Carter chairs the Save Our Sirius group, which is fighting to prevent the demolition of the Tao Gofersdesigned Sirius former public housing building in Sydney’s The Rocks. He notes a resemblance between the 1970s structure and King Toronto. “For a government that is in the thrall of the shock of the new, I’m sure they’d like to know the building they are trying to demolish is now the latest ‘design’ for apartments in ‘starchitect’ land.” Though he hasn’t studied the King Toronto plans in detail, Carter says amenity should be the most important factor. “I would want to make sure this building wasn’t just another big showy building, but had substance. A city doesn’t want too many buildings like this. Maybe just one,” Carter says. kingtoronto.com
