aris-based designer Rodolphe Parente has breathed new life into a spectacular heritage-listed apartment in a classical dressed-stone building in the Trocadero area, facing the Eiffel Tower. A terrible start this is not, but it’s what Parente has done with it that makes this interior truly sing. The 350-square-metre home of grand proportions features original ornate elements dating back to the 18th century. Think coffered ceilings, decorative mouldings, Chineseinfluenced pediments and marble fireplaces. Oh, baby! You had me at the 18th century. The owners of the apartment, a couple in their 30s with three young children, are passionate collectors of contemporary art and furniture. They asked Parente for a series of open spaces that could display their impressive collections. Parente’s main idea for the project was to introduce functional interventions while respecting the heritage character of the space. The scope involved a complete refurbishment of the apartment, including walls, partitions, ceilings, mouldings, trimmings, custom joinery, plus furniture and lighting selections. Inspired by the greats such as Pierre Chareau and Jean-Michel Frank, Parente studied interior and furniture design at several prestigious art schools in France and Switzerland. His boutique practice undertakes a wide scope of projects, spanning interiors and product design across luxury hotels, private residences, flagship showrooms and furniture collections. For my money, it is Parente’s multidisciplinary approach that gives this apartment a certain X factor. Let’s take the kitchen as an example. This amazing space could easily be mistaken for a retail showroom. The bathroom looks like it’s been plucked out of a high-end resort. The home office/library feels just like a design gallery. Parente’s approach was centred on a respect for the prevailing architecture and emphasising the significance of the existing volumes. His
bold yet elegant interventions have created a series of perfect opportunities for the art and furniture collections to receive the attention they deserve. At the same time, the result in no way feels like a contemplative or “frozen space”. Instead, the apartment was designed to feel like a home; a space that’s ultimately comfortable and dedicated to family life. All this while being visually arresting and generally a knockout. Parente is no stranger to making bold and ambitious stylistic choices. Although his pursuit of inimitable atmospheres through daring gestures is always underpinned with careful detailing and use of materials. Here, marble and brass play a pivotal role in achieving a visual coherence between all the rooms. The walls and ceilings are painted a perfect shade of off-white, reminiscent of raw porcelain. This delicacy is reinforced with the light timber floor made of oak, which acts as the perfect base. Sprinkle a little bit of silk, velvet, walnut, mirror, fine art and designer furniture on top, and I’m all over it. Well played, Mr Parente!

73-75 Alpine Terrace, TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN QLD According to ancient Feng Shui practitioners, the ideal location for a harmonious home is to be located near the top of a mountain, yet sheltered from harsh winds. It should offer a view, preferably over water and never be positioned below road level. The problem for modern day Feng Shui enthusiasts is finding a great home on a mountain that is also within commuting distance of the city and all its benefits. This prestige mountain home certainly fits the suggested criteria with much more to offer a fortunate buyer. “Built by a master builder at the pinnacle of his career, this spacious and beautifully maintained home offers stunning views of the coast as well as being within easy reach of highly regarded state schools and excellent private schools.” Contact now, to arrange a private inspection.
