Tide turns on the bay FEATURE STORY
The Sydney suburb of Double Bay is once again finding itself in the spotlight as a top lifestyle destination. B y SU E WILLIAMS
O
nce considered bound for nothing but faded glory, Double Bay has confounded critics by becoming one of Sydney’s most buzzy and sought-after suburbs. “You once would have to put on sequins to go there and sit in a fine-dining restaurant,” says Katherine O’Regan, chairwoman of the Double Bay Chamber of Commerce. “But now it offers a far more inclusive experience, with lots of casual outside cafes as well as smart restaurants, bars, excellent shopping and a much greater variety of homes, with a lot of residential development.
6
PR E ST IGE
“It’s become a wonderful lifestyle destination and has a much livelier feel and is so much more vibrant. You can now leave the sequins at home.” Property price increases reflect rising fortunes. The median house price has soared by 72.41 per cent during the past five years to $3.75 million on Domain Group figures, and apartments by 90.67 per cent to a $1.43 million. “We’ve seen the area improve ever since the Kiaora Lands precinct was opened by the new Woolworths,” says Bart Doff of Laing + Simmons Double Bay, who is selling our feature
apartment. “It’s made a huge difference to the whole of Double Bay.” It started losing its glitz when Westfield Bondi Junction opened in 2004 and shoppers started to drift away. It was labelled ‘’Double Pay’’ because of high prices and, by 2008-9, the retail vacancy rate had slumped to 18 per cent. But since then there’s been a concerted attempt to reclaim the suburb’s mojo, with a beautification scheme, helped by the InterContinental taking over the old RitzCarlton, a new library, the $100-million Kiaora
Lands precinct and a huge amount of boutiqueapartment development. A new Palace 10-cinema complex has been confirmed and the area has had an influx of new bars and clubs, as nightlife moves from the CBD and Kings Cross. “It’s become a new haven for party-goers and there’s so much residential and more socialites down there,” says Elliott Placks of Ray White Double Bay. “I think it’s such a nice place to live now that people are leaving Westfield to walk around Double Bay and eat and enjoy the fresh air, and upmarket property. Sean Poche of Phillips Pantzer Donnelley agrees. “At one point, it lost its appeal, but now there has definitely been a renaissance.”

APARTMENT LIFE
B y K ATE J O N E S
The natural beauty of timber and light create ambience at the Wharfside Residences.
Creative luxury abounds Artistic flair in architecture can set two residences with exactly the same features on two totally different plains.
T
wo properties may have the same number of bedrooms and bathrooms, yet in terms of style can be worlds apart. The creativity behind Wharfside Terraces, on the edge of Melbourne’s Yarra River, is unmistakable. Here, the movement of the water combines with raw maritime colours to produce 11 townhouses with heritage-inspired luxury. The facade of the terrace residences forms a pattern of hoops and boxes clad in different materials to give each home a unique identity, says Mirvac design director Michael Wiener. “Each house is individual yet each house is read as a row of townhouses or terraces. Music and architecture are very similar things, ... Basically there’s a rhythm to that facade and each grouping has its own rhythm,” he says. Materials used in the exteriors are a nod to Melbourne’s maritime heritage and underline
the individuality of the residences. “A lot of the inspiration came from what was the heritage of the site,” Wiener says. “One thing that’s really special about Yarra’s Edge in particular is the materiality, the authenticity of the materials we’ve used on the buildings [copper, zinc and concrete], elements that really age and patina.” Inside, the natural beauty of timber and light create ambience. The timber stair-treads and handrail weave up through the building, much like a spiral staircase. An overhead void brings a flood of light into the kitchen below. There are 11 homes in Wharfside Residences, yet only one remains on the market. All are just 11 metres from the river’s edge, which can be followed on the promenade at the doorstep. Like the glamorous harbour addresses of Sydney and the waterfront city of Hong Kong, the water is the star of the show here. It served
WHARFSIDE RESIDENCES AT YARRA’S EDGE as the principle stimulus behind the interior and exterior design by Wiener and his team. “People always ask: ‘what’s your inspiration?’ The site’s your inspiration; the water’s your inspiration; the ability to capture light and to articulate form is your inspiration,” Wiener says. “The inspiration was really to draw out and to really maximise the unique qualities of the site and to put people in touch with the river, the light and the heritage of the site. “It’s not often you get such an amazing site – north-facing, waterfront-based around the edge of the CBD – as a blank canvas to do something with. It’s just really exciting to do really highend residences, to create architecture to live in, not to just look at.” The Wharfside Terraces are part of the lowrise component of Mirvac’s Yarra’s Edge, a waterside community that has been under development for 18 years. It comprises two highrise apartment towers – Forge at 30 levels and Voyager at 43 levels – plus another low-rise offering at the three-storey Cargo Homes.
