An instant classic FEATURE STORY

With beautiful materials and an ingenious, elegant design, this brand-new Hawthorn home will stand the test of time. B y PAU L B E S T

ere’s a thought. There are houses being built today that may – give or take 100 years – become the period homes of tomorrow. Houses like the grand Victorian and Edwardian manses of yesteryear, not only built to last but to enjoy lasting appeal. Such a house may very well be this new multilevel residence in View Street, Hawthorn. Certainly, the architect means for it to endure. Visually, the materials are vital to this sense of durability. “We were highly conscious of trying to develop a palette of materials that are

timeless,” says Steve Domoney, principal of Fitzroy-based Steve Domoney Architecture. “We try and avoid fads.” The facade is all about bluestone, velvety render and pop-out steel elements. Internally, timber and stone create a natural environment. Oak is used for joinery and floors, as well as to line the master-bedroom walls and coffered ceiling in the living-dining zone. The building’s clean modern lines give the house an ageless quality. But, it’s the spatial relationships of the interiors that have it all over

period homes, ensuring this house will last well into the future – internal volumes that both visually connect and flow freely. For instance, a split-level ground floor – taking advantage of the sloping block – wraps around an internal courtyard and wet-edge pool, with floor-to-ceiling glass allowing endto-end line of sight. “The central courtyard gives the house an oasis quality,” says Domoney. What also may suggest longevity is that this is one of four properties Domoney is involved with in View Street. There’s a fifth around the corner.

YOUR AGENT Richard Winneke, Jellis Craig & Company Hawthorn

“The house is for buyers who have grown tired of the period home but still want big bedrooms and separate living areas.”

“The street is taking on a new look,” says Jellis Craig director Richard Winneke, who sold 14 View Street about 18 months ago, calling it “the best house I sold” in 2017. Domoney’s masterpieces are creating a new architectural presence, mainly replacing dark, pokey 1930s houses. Domoney is giving each house its own character while maintaining a common “raw and timeless” appearance “These new kids on the block are far more gentrified, more refined and a better-quality product than what they’re replacing,” says Domoney. Winneke says interest in these houses is coming from those looking to exchange heritage houses for the same luxury in a new, lowmaintenance abode. “They’re looking at (View Street) like a period home,” says Winneke.

two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with absolute water frontage on Sydney Harbour, 360-degree views and a sun roof, all for just $1.24 million? It sounds too good to be true, until you consider that the land size is zero, and very few apartments have sun roofs such as this boat does. The price tag does still seem tempting, though, once you’ve wandered dreamily around the new Prestige 460S coupe cruiser, picturing yourself parked off the beach at Balmoral, bathing in the golden light of how good your life is. This 14-metre beauty is just small enough that you can drive it without being covered in an unpleasant sheen of fear sweat, and it’s also staggeringly easy to berth thanks to its “Joystick Driving” option, which basically makes the whole thing less complex than playing Fortnite. Another bonus for the skipper is that they’re not left out of the action. The comfortable, classy couches and kitchen area of this Frenchdesigned cruiser are all focused around the driver’s seat, although you can send them all out

to a pleasant rear sun deck if the carousing gets annoying. Plus that magnificent sun roof means you can soak up the rays while you’re steering. With a beam of 4.3 metres, there’s a real sense of space. The master cabin offers comfortable overnight accommodation and an en suite, and even the guest cabin in the bow feels spacious. The real highlights, though, are the bed-like loungers on the foredeck and the hydraulic swim platform at the rear. It might seem the height of laziness to drop the platform for a swim, but then you realise you can set your deck chairs up there and create the perfect outdoor living room, literally in the harbour. Prestige’s brand manager, Steven Bullock, points out that this 460S is already a huge hit in the US, where it’s the second biggest-selling boat in the 45-to-60-foot range. “What you’ll notice on these boats is that you’re never touching, or seeing, fibreglass or plastic. It’s all soft furnishings and stitched leather,” he says. All of which makes that $1.24 million price sound like even more of a bargain.

For sale Agent: Prestige Property Agents, Ivy Wu 0433 103 586 It’s handy to have a couple of floating bedrooms, even when your palatial pad has seven of its own. What boat owners will really love, though, is the 27-metre water frontage, offering easy access to your Prestige 460S … or something much bigger.
