Pushing the perimeters of Scandi style
A
s someone who’s been keenly following the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair from afar, I was thrilled to be invited to the Swedish capital in early February. Finally, I was able to experience Scandinavia’s most important design fair for myself, while acting as an international judge at the Editor's Choice awards for the fair’s best stand, product and emerging designer categories. My expectations were pretty damn high. After all, this is the week that’s been leaving a steady trail of Scandinavian design bombs all over the internet. But I'm happy to report, despite the build-up in the anticipation, my visit to Stockholm did not disappoint. The fair itself is quite intimate, (mostly) really beautifully presented and well edited, providing a fantastic opportunity to experience Scandinavian design on home turf, and to catch a snapshot of where Scandinavian design and its major brands are at right now. This year, NM& – A New Collection, specially created for Nationalmuseum, stole the show. Stockholm's Museum of Fine Arts recently reopened after a major renovation, including a spectacular assembly of products commissioned for Sweden’s major cultural destination. The project brought together a collective of 32 designers and 21 Nordic producers, resulting in one of the most brilliant furniture, lighting and object collections I’ve seen. Although it’s is difficult to single out a favourite from such a strong group of some 50 products, the whimsical Curve lights designed by Front and produced by Zero Lighting for Nationalmuseum's library stick out the most in my mind. Swedish brand Fogia killed it with another brilliant collection, so I decided to share an image (left) that shows four of their new products – Bond shelving designed by Main, Utility stool by Norm Architects, and Barba seat and Ribbon rugs by Andreas Engesvik.

New to me, Danish brand NORR 11 released a stunning seating collection dubbed New Wave, designed by Kristian Sofus Hansen, Nicolaj Noddesbo and Tommy Hyldahl. There’s just something about the overall proportions and the lovely curves of the outer frame that are seriously making me consider risking having a white sofa just like this. Another favourite release was the elegant Novel Chair, designed by Ida Linea Hildebrand for a relatively young Copenhagen-based brand Friends and Founders. If there’s a chair that epitomises the elegance of the inimitable style icon Coco Chanel, this chair would have to be it. Luxury Swedish rug brand Kasthall collaborated with Monica Khemsurov and Jill Singer, founders of the New York-based online magazine Sight Unseen, on two new rugs. The collaboration draws attention to Kasthall’s new version of web-based design tool Rug Designer, which allows anyone to create their own bespoke rugs. You know, in case you're looking for a weekend project.
“It’s a snapshot of where Scandinavian design and its major brands are right now.”

hat the natural enemy of speed is weight is no great secret, but few car makers have taken such a fastidious approach to shedding those pesky extra kilos as McLaren with its new 600LT Spider. The glovebox and door pockets? Gone. The multimedia screen? Now a touchscreen, because traditional control dials would have added a tiny amount of extra weight. The windscreen has been made using thinner and lighter glass, and the steel wheel nuts have been replaced by new aerospace-style titanium fasteners that save a grand total of 400 grams. In fact, about the only weight McLaren can’t control is that of the driver. Although you can’t help but think they’d like to sell the car with a set of branded scales for any occupants. But there’s method to the brand’s weightobsessed madness. The result is a car that, despite having one of the smallest engines in the supercar class with a comparatively tiny V8 in a world of V10s and V12s, stakes its claim as one of the fastest accelerating vehicles on the planet.
The numbers are genuinely staggering; 100km/h arrives in just 2.9 seconds, and you’ll scream from zero to 200km/h in just 8.4 seconds. Top speed? That’s 324km/h with the roof closed. Or, if you want to know what it may feel like to be fired head-first from a cannon, it will clip 315km/h with its convertible roof open. The moment you climb inside, you’re met with a cabin designed with a laser focus on performance. The lightweight seats are thinly padded, the centre console allows the driver to dial up the sportiness, via suspension, gearing or engine settings, and the flat-bottomed steering wheel is wrapped in grippy Alcantara. It’s a wheel you'll soon find yourself clinging to for dear life, because out in the real world those performance numbers translate to something rapidly approaching terrifying. While it’s difficult to label something wearing a $496,000 pricetag a bargain, this most super of super cars – those top-exit exhaust tips spit flames, actual flames, when you accelerate – somehow feels worth every penny.

For sale Agent: Kollosche, Michael Kollosche 0411 188 815 Yes, this palatial waterfront residence does have lock-up garage space for five of your cars (and a dock for your boat), but it would be a travesty to hide your McLaren away. Far better, then, to take advantage of the sweeping drive and entry way, where you can park your half-million-dollar ride.
