mid a sea of serene minimalism and neutral palettes, 29 Laidlaw Parade, East Brisbane, truly stands out. But to label the five-bedroom, six-bathroom riverfront property merely a home is a vast understatement. It’s an artwork, where no two rooms are similar, each weaving a unique visual narrative, yet all working harmoniously. The property sits on the Brisbane River, with a private jetty and ideal city skyline views. But why look outside? Inside is a blend of black, white and gold accents, opulent Italian marble,

intricately adorned archways, custom tiles, vaulted ceilings, Venetian glass tapware, and hand-painted wallpaper, while venetian plaster and brass also feature heavily. The eye-catching design is the artistic creation of Australian designer Greg Natale. He’s internationally renowned for creating sophisticated glamour using bold patterns and colour, and it was this aesthetic that caught the attention of the owners, Steve and Leticia. They bought the block and its original home in 2017, with the view to knock down and rebuild.
They developed the new floor plan and basic exterior design themselves, and while researching custom tiles they fell in love with Natale’s designs, so they reached out to ask if he would be interested in helping them bring their ideas to life. “He rang us within about a minute of sending him an email,” laughs Leticia. “He fell in love with the exterior design, and from there he just took control and actually took over the architectural side of the planning as well.” Completed in 2020, the final home is spread over three levels. The middle level is for entertaining, with a kitchen, library, living and bar area, and a dining room wrapped in custom de Gournay wallpaper. Up the concrete formed curved staircase are the en suite bedrooms, each intricately designed with unique detail. The main bedroom is adorned with Gucci wallpaper and features a 10-metre walk-in wardrobe complete with floorto-ceiling shoe and bag storage. The ground floor features a wellness wing, where you can have a sauna or steam before

retiring to the striking marble bath with scalloped edges. Use it for a warm soak, or a heart-pumping ice recovery bath. From there, step out onto the pool deck. The pool itself was inspired by a hotel pool in Morocco, and features custom tiles. It’s a pool that draws regular requests from Instagrammers to use as a photo-shoot location, although all have been turned down. Elsewhere in the home is a theatre, office, butler’s kitchen, and space for a wine cellar. All levels are serviced by a lift. One consistency throughout the house is marble, inspired by Steve and Leticia’s many trips to Italy. “We spend a lot of our summers in Forte dei Marmi, which is near the Carrara Mountains and we loved a particular type of marble called Paonazzetto,” says Leticia. “We were able to be introduced to a man who owns quite a few quarries there, and actually chose a lot of our stone pieces from inside the cave.” The marble on the kitchen splashback, bench, bar and fireplace comes from the same cave in Carrara as the floor of the Pantheon in Rome.
“Nothing beats this home. Laidlaw Parade has the best aspect for city views and sunsets in Brisbane. I think for anyone that has got very picky tastes, they need to come and have a look at [the home].”
Builder Corey Stone from CHS Builders says the 18-month build went to plan thanks to Natale’s meticulous plans, but there was a nervous wait for the marble. It had to be craned in on arrival. “Within the two weeks before handing over we had to put in all the benchtops and both bathtubs. It was about six tonnes’ worth of marble to install in a week and a half,” he says. The driver behind every decision in the build was never to take shortcuts but meticulously create a superior product. “Cutting corners wasn’t allowed in this house,” Steve says. “There is nothing that’s been done to be cost effective, on principle. It wasn’t from a point of being extravagant but just wanting to create something of quality.” Sales agent Henry Hodge from Henry Hodge Real Estate is well accustomed to luxury properties, but says the house is unlike anything he’s seen in the region. “The thing that stood out to me more than anything was just the level of detail and the quality of craftsmanship by the builder,” he says. “I’ve followed Greg Natale over the years, and
his work’s brilliant, but to be able to actually see something that was brand new designed by him in Brisbane obviously takes the real estate landscape to a whole new level here.” This feature is part of a Domain Prestige Deluxe package.

A touch of romance If unique luxury real estate gets your heart racing prepare to meet three Queensland homes that will sweep you off your feet. B y SAR AH WE B B

eartbreakingly beautiful, awash with luminous coastlines and bathed with a lush hinterland that morphs into jungle in the tropical north, Queensland is a state akin to a romance novel that’s sparking a love affair among prestige buyers. It’s an amorous affair that’s driving property prices to record heights, with the honeymoon expected to reach a crescendo this summer when borders reopen and release a fresh wave of love-struck buyers.

And the timing couldn’t be better. From a Sanctuary Cove hideaway to a Frenchstyle chateau in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and a palatial retreat high over the Coral Sea – three of the state’s most romantic homes are on the market, and their facades alone could make the fussiest protagonist swoon. Commanding one of Queensland’s most prestigious ocean views from an elevated 2821-square-metre parcel of the Whitsundays, property number one is the architectural

masterpiece oozing opulence at 10 Hayman East, Hayman Island. On the market for $7.7 million, and featuring a heat-regulated infinity pool that looks over the Great Barrier Reef, the four-bedroom, fourbathroom “private paradise” envelopes a level of luxury that the selling agent, Carol Carter of Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty, says not only encapsulates romance, but the best the eastern seaboard can offer in exclusivity. “There are a few reasons this home is special and one is the total privacy … then there are the views. They are just stunning and it blows you away every time you go up there,” Carter says. “But you also have resort facilities at your fingertips, so even if you want to have a romantic dinner for two it can all be arranged with a private chef while looking at that view.” And interest, she says, has been nothing short of immense from prestige buyers across the nation and the globe. “What we’re seeing is a new wave of Australians who traditionally may have travelled overseas for their annual holidays or those who are taking advantage of the closed borders and venturing to see a part of Australia they have never seen before,” Carter says. “And Hayman is in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. There is tremendous value in just that fact alone … and when people realise how truly magnificent it is, they want to be more invested in the lifestyle. “I do also believe we’ll have a rush once those borders open because we have several people waiting to get back here.” Second on the list – and occupying a 1500-square-metre parcel of the exclusive Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast – is the breathtaking 5927 Turnbury Terrace. The five-bedroom house has mesmerising views and a Hamptons charm that melds with the elite aesthetic of the estate, says selling agent Glenys Pitkin of Harcourts Coastal Paradise Point. “It feels as though it floats … you’ve got these two lakes [in front] and the house is projected forward and it’s just gorgeous. There’s a lot of hand-laid stone, and all the bathrooms are marble,” she says. “I think in terms of romance, it’s the fact that the home flows so well and it’s
got two big master suites. The gardens are sensational as well.” The home is priced at “interest above $5 million”. Further north, and wrapping up the romantic trio, is the charmant chateau at 200 Ocean View Road, Ocean View, in the heart of one of Queensland’s most picturesque hinterland pockets. As if lifted from the Brittany countryside, the exquisite estate, priced at $4.2 million to $4.5 million, harks back to old-world France while capturing breathtaking views of the Glass House Mountains and the Sunshine Coast. Co-selling agent Nigel Statham, of Ray White Dayboro, says the sheer romance of the fourhectare estate makes it a journey rather than mere bricks and mortar, while a shallow moat and a balcony seductively perched off a tower give it a Shakespearean appeal. “I think it’s the quality that actually makes it so romantic. Properties with a bit of a theme can miss the mark but this one doesn’t,” he says. “The kitchen is the kind of place you can just imagine making this big meal in … but I think the most romantic feature has to be the courtyard. It’s just beautifully done.”

n a hilltop in the Byron Bay hinterland, is a sprawling and sunlit new-build named Las Palmas, inspired by the owner’s previous family home. Built by Sally and Matthew McGarry as their family home, the truly remarkable residence has taken design cues from Fenner House, a midcentury modern icon, designed in the 1950s by one of Australia’s most influential architects, Robin Boyd – a house filled with childhood memories for Sally that was commissioned and owned by her late grandfather. “Our intention was to build a family home where our three boys could run freely, and after coming across this property … we instantly fell in love with the open space, hinterland views and sunset orientation,” says Sally. “We couldn’t wait to start the build and call this place home.” From purchasing the land in early 2016, the couple sought the guidance of both Sydney-
based DUO Architects and Byron-based Davis Architects. With landscape design by LARC Collective, executed by Lime Landscapes, the build was completed in January 2020. “We lived on-site in a tiny cabin for the last half of the build, [so] we had the opportunity to become familiar with the space, as we picked our fixtures and fittings,” recalls Sally. “We really got to know our builders and tradies, and would often end the day with a knock-off beer while watching the sunset – it was a highlight to see first-hand how much dedication and passion was brought to the project.” Akin to Fenner House, Las Palmas is divided into two wings: one for entertaining and the other for sleeping, with the sleeping wing oriented to the north, and the entertaining wing set to the south-west, spilling to the outdoors, with sweeping views of the hinterland’s rolling hills.
“The free-flowing floor plan is a key feature of the house, permitting large spans of continuous glass to create a series of moments and uninterrupted connections to the landscape,” Sally explains. “For example, I can be busy in the grand kitchen, preparing something on the massive island bench, and still catch the sunset or watch the kids play in the pool – when the glass doors are open, I can feel like I’m outside with them.” Brimming with high-end luxury materials and designer finishes, such as burnished concrete floors and the use of blackbutt timber throughout, Las Palmas achieves a perfect balance between modern minimalist and ’70s eclectic, made better by Sally’s knack for styling. “My vision was to create a relaxing holiday vibe, with handpicked and sourced items that have a story to tell,” she says. “I have mixed new pieces, like a modular sofa from HK Living, rugs from Tigmi Trading, and tables by Sarah Ellison, blended with second-hand finds from antique stores and garage sales.” Adding to its spectacular appeal, the home’s exterior encompasses a wrap-around concrete deck, a stunning 15-metre infinity-edge pool, an outdoor cinema and a fire-pit area, along with giant pillar rocks displayed about, sourced from a local quarry. “Be it swimming year-round in the pool or watching movies under the stars, our home provides an unmistakable feeling of release,” Sally says. “And then there’s the fact that it offers the best of both worlds – the hinterland and rural living experience, with easy access to the beach and coastal living.” While the McGarry family have come to love life at Las Palmas, a new exciting project beckons, resulting in the property hitting the market for the first time. “The house was purpose-built to make it easy to pack up and holiday-let, and we also have prepared plans to build a second house, maximising the property’s earning potential in the future,” says Sally. “We hope the next buyer is not only someone who will make the most of these opportunities, but also love the resort-like holiday feel – especially the magical sunsets.”

THE PROPERTY INVESTOR
ISTOCK
Ask yourself: Are you a risk-taker? Investing in residential property may seem easy, but it’s essential to assess your appetite for, or aversion to, risk. B y SU E WILLIAMS
T
Do you risk overpaying in areas like Palm Beach, Sydney, or look at less popular areas for higher growth but risk not having a tenant?
here are some people who love fast cars, high-adrenaline sports and investments that pay big – if they come off. And there are others who prefer a quieter life of steady returns, security and far less stress. But for all investors in residential property, it’s vital that they understand their own risk profile before they make the leap, advises property investment expert Luke Harris, author of the new book Property Fit: Get your Property Portfolio in Shape for Financial Freedom. “I hear many stories at the moment about people who’ve heard talk around the barbecue about Bitcoin and they invest sometimes without even knowing what it is,” he says. “But the good thing about property is that everyone understands it. “At the same time, you still need to know your appetite for, or aversion to, risk. If you’re 58, for example, you probably don’t want to buy a property and have to wait a long time for its value to grow; you might want to activate it through a renovation to help. But if you’re younger, you can take more of a risk.”
Trying accurately to assess your own situation is critical in working out how much risk you should be prepared to take, Harris suggests. For example, you might have a job that’s under threat, on a short-term contract or be in uncertain casual employment.
“It’s about having an informed position and moving ahead from that.” Or you might have a very low level of savings that can’t provide a buffer if you hit trouble with an investment. “So, you need to educate yourself to understand the risks associated with different residential investments, and learn not to be emotional about those decisions,” Harris says.
“It’s about having an informed position and moving ahead from that.” Founder of Freedom Property Investors Scott Kuru agrees that people’s own perceptions of risk can be very different. That’s not such a problem in terms of holding a property in today’s rock-bottom-interest-rate environment with low vacancy rates in most areas. “But that can still be location and propertydependent,” Kuru says. “You’ll increase your risk of not having a tenant and being able to repay your mortgage if you’ve invested in a property no one likes in an area where no one wants to live. “Buying the right property can then be the riskiest proposition. There are some areas where people are caught up in FOMO and are overpaying for property and they’re overlooking less popular areas where there might be a lot more growth potential. Those risks can be lessened, however, by doing your due diligence about properties and researching areas.” Being tolerant to risk-taking can always be a function of age, income and profession, but it’s often tied just as much to a person’s psychology, believes Brighter Finance mortgage broker Marcus Roberts. “Attitudes to risk and risk-management can come from your background,” he says. “Some people have grown up in a very conservative fashion, while others are brought up to be much bigger risk-takers – and not having a backup plan doesn’t worry them.”
