It’s been an absolute joy to be able to bring you more and more stories each week about events and things to do across the state, particularly when you consider how bleak the outlook was at so many points last year. In our pages this week, three things that only recently seemed so far away: a leading singer with a national tour, an arts festival in the heart of the city and a theatrical show. And all with crowds! It was fascinating for us to catch up with Delta Goodrem for this issue and her new book certainly looks well worth checking out. ●

Magic moments ENTERTAINMENT This sexy theatre show isn’t about
stripping, despite its namesake.
‘N
one of us are strippers,” says Magic Mike Live dancer Nick Phillips. “We are all trained dancers in a show that aims to give women what they actually want, not what men think they want.” Phillips is among 20 performers headed to Melbourne to showcase their moves in the Channing Tatum-conceived and directed Magic Mike Live, based on the hit films. Melbourne-born Phillips lived in LA and worked with the likes of Cher and Britney Spears when asked if he wanted to return home to do the show. “It’s the best decision I could have made because America’s a mess right now,” he says. “And it’s a dream job that brought me back to my family and the great food and coffee I was missing. It’s surreal to even have a job right now.” Both Phillips’ parents performed with the
Australian Ballet but he never felt coerced to dance. Aged 16, his first paying gig was at a Dandenong Plaza fashion parade. Now he’s dancing for hundreds of women and some men each night in a show that aims to make women feel empowered and safe. “The thing with strip shows is that it’s always been men oiled up, fake tans, hairless bodies. That’s very dated, very ’90s. This show is created by women, along with Tatum, to discover what women want, to listen and respond accordingly.” Phillips suggests a significant point of difference to other strip shows is the lack of tacky moves since the bulk of the choreography is hip hop. There’s also tap dancing, a pool pas de deux and acrobatics. The men have been trained to read body language to sense if a woman doesn’t wish to be approached. Fellow Melburnian Ned Zaina was a principal dancer with Opera Australia for three years, shone

in musical theatre, then joined Magic Mike Live. “This show is full of surprises,” he says. “It’s our job to help people feel seen in an environment they haven’t felt seen before. I make eye contact and make them feel like they are special.” With his classical dance training, Zaina brings something unique to a show that has also allowed him to grow as a performer. He believes his opera and musical theatre experience generates a stronger connection with the older audience members. “It’s a lot more of a classy event than what it’s perceived to be from the outside. But yeah, of course, we’re taking off our shirts and being sexy and dancing like crazy and doing it in a way that’s super fun and hopefully enjoyable.” Josh Williams came to Melbourne from Auckland to work as a singer. Having belted out tunes with the Backstreet Boys and Jason Derulo, in Magic Mike Live he helps seduce the audience with his voice. “I was taught how to sing by my older sisters, and that’s my passion,” says Williams. “It’s more like a theatre show; I don’t believe it’s a strip show. Wait until you see it. It’s totally different to what you think it’s going to be.” ● MAGIC MIKE LIVE \ The Arcadia, Birrarung Marr from June 8.

COVER STORY
She’s been in the spotlight for decades, so is there any more to know about Delta Goodrem? Yes; plenty.
I
n her 18-year career, there’s little that singersongwriter Delta Goodrem hasn’t had a go at, but writing a book is a first. Now 36, Goodrem is in a place of reckoning, where talking about the past and how it’s shaped her is now up for discussion. Bridge Over Troubled Dreams accompanies the release of a new studio album of the same name and revels in the stories behind the making of each track. But more than that, Goodrem opens up about love, health, and how she’s embraced fame and observed what it’s done to others in her pursuit to find her own happy place. “I have been in TV and music since I was very young, and so much of my life has been in the public eye,” says Goodrem, who was signed to Sony Music at the age of 15 and released her 2003 debut album, Innocent Eyes, aged 19.
album last year. The feeling of learning to sing again left her confused and unsure about her own musical future. She wrote Keep Climbing to remind herself about the importance of resilience. “The song is about admitting the fear in change and being stuck in between two lives,” she says. “It’s the moment in between where you were and where you are going in your life. It’s important to live in hope.” Goodrem says she’s learning to lean into discomfort when writing, trading metaphors for reality and taking her fans on a particularly personal journey as a result. She says the music industry’s forced slowdown has given her a new perspective on what matters in life. She’s living in Sydney, enjoying being close to family and friends, and is in a relationship with musician Matthew Copley, but she’s tight-lipped about the
This time it’s public “As a result, some of my previous songs were veiled in metaphors, but this time I’ve been incredibly personal, raw and honest. I have opened up and shared stories that I have not shared before.” The story of how her mother Lea nearly lost Delta in 1984 when seven months pregnant is told in the book via the song Crash. It’s the first time Goodrem has felt comfortable to speak about a trauma that belonged to her parents. She used the time during the pandemic to unravel the hurt they went through while expecting their first child – Goodrem was delivered 10 weeks early as a result of the car accident. Goodrem also touches on the complication of surgery to remove a salivary gland, which led to her temporarily losing her speech while making the
relationship, preferring to keep her cards close when it comes to matters of the heart. Everybody’s Famous is her observation of fame and what it means in the modern world. But as someone who has been in the spotlight since she was a teenager, fame hasn’t affected her, she says. “Sometimes, it feels like everyone right now is famous. I think I have stayed the same but have tried to adapt and evolve,” Goodrem says. “Ever since the start of my career I’ve had very strong core beliefs, and I think sometimes it’s the people around you that change.” A Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer diagnosis at the age of 18 undoubtedly changed her life forever and is the reason she’s not let fame get the better of her. She went through eight months of chemotherapy

and two months of radiotherapy before she went into remission. Goodrem holds tight to her philanthropic work. Through the Delta Goodrem Foundation, she works with St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney to help fund medical research into blood cancers and autoimmune disease. “St Vincent’s is where my journey began and I wanted to give back,” she says. “While going through cancer, I was overwhelmed with all of the love, support and kindness I received from the public, friends, family and my incredible team of healthcare providers. “Starting the foundation was a way of making sure that we can really make a genuine impact and meaningful difference in people’s lives.” Since beating cancer, her health has become a huge priority. Goodrem says it all comes down to eating well, getting plenty of sleep and going back to nature to find moments of peace and clarity. “It’s really important to stay in tune with your body so you know when you need to conserve energy and know when to give it out,” she says. “It’s coming to that realisation that it’s OK to sometimes conserve and just be alone and heal. That realisation was big for me.” A national tour which kicks off in September will take the ARIA Award-winner around the country – a moment she’s been waiting for. “I love performing and touring and can’t wait to play live again and see everyone face to face,” says Goodrem, who has sold more than eight million albums globally. She will perform her new music and hits from her back catalogue – and is currently working on the stage spectacle. “To celebrate in person together again and feel the incredible energy in a room that we haven’t had for a year is what I am most looking forward to.” ● BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED DREAMS \ In stores now

have a handful of friends who match my excitement around food. They over-order, finish everything and always tip. So, when one of them texts me with the news that The Hardware Club is his new office favourite, I know I’ve backed a winner. The former workers’ social club on Hardware Lane is like a neighbourhood gem in the heart of the CBD. There’s a wood-fired oven resembling the armoured shell of an armadillo, pillars and pipes in primary colours and specials scribbled on blackboards. The restaurant’s brilliant staff and lively take on northern Italian food set it apart. There’s no pasta in cacio e pepe, which is instead a half-toastie filled with gooey cheese. Marrow lifted by salsa verde is scooped from the bone onto toast, and spaghetti assassina is as the menu promises: “very spicy”. It uses yesterday’s pasta, a thicker variety called spaghettoni from an artisanal producer in Naples, fried off in a pan and crowned with a cooling mound of mozzarella. “We should probably order something green”

Later, my food friend sends me another message. He’s after a lunch recommendation to floor a CEO, but has another meeting at The Hardware Club the day prior. Gimlet? A bit far. Chancery Lane? A touch fancy. Lee Ho Fook? Closed. Looks like it’s The Hardware Club again. I’ll take commission in carbs. ●

results in avocado in saor, a Venetian dish usually made with sardines. It’s strewn with caramelised onions, vinegary thyme and raisin agrodolce and charred hazelnuts. To finish, a waiter announces our “lean Italian sausage” has arrived. The giggles are ceased by the sheer impressiveness of the flame-roasted coil on braised silver. It looks huge, but we get through it.
What’s nearby? So much! Too much! On Hardware Lane alone: Piccolina has opened a new store on the corner (piccolinagelateria.com.au); Kirk’s Wine Bar remains a classic for knockoffs and snacks (kirkswinebar.com); try Miznon for Melbourne’s best filled

anya Hutton remembers visiting Ave Maria College before being appointed principal and being struck by its strong sense of community and connectedness. “Whenever I walked into this school, there was something about it – it was always welcoming, there was a great sense of collegiality amongst the staff, and the students always presented well. I spent years at an all-girls’ school some time ago, and I wanted to return because I have a strong belief that girls deserve a great education,” says Hutton, who was appointed in 2019 for 2020. Ave Maria College offers faith-based, studentcentred programs and is inspired by the Franciscan charism and the messages of St Francis, St Clare and Helene de Chappotin, who founded the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. “Growing up, I heard a lot about St Francis from my mother and grandmother. They told me about St Francis’ and St Clare’s work with the poor and their core values of peace, justice, inclusion, compassion and the dignity of all. Coming to Ave Maria College has brought me back to that charism, and it feels like coming home,” says Hutton. Since arriving at Ave Maria College in 2020, Hutton has worked diligently with her teaching staff to build on the school’s firm foundations. As a result, the Ave Maria College Learning Charter, developed in 2018, has been transformed into a charter for education that embraces Visible Learning and Visible Wellbeing. “We have made the Charter more reflective of who we are as a faith community, and we’ve placed greater focus on our commitment to improving learning outcomes and on wellbeing,” says Hutton. “The Charter now incorporates learner attributes that our students and staff aspire to, like critical thinking and curiosity, and it incorporates wellbeing skills, like students developing positive relationships and a strong sense of self. We want our students to engage in all the College has to offer in a positive way, so they can grow and thrive as young people. “Of course, we continue to pride ourselves on our academic results, placing ourselves as a high performing catholic secondary school, but we also recognise that the world is more complex than this. The Charter acknowledges that to achieve good
TA N YA H U T T O N
academic results, education has to be holistic. Our students are all different, and they have different interests, passions and strengths. Whatever those are, we endeavour to cater for them, so students achieve the goals they set themselves.” This is Hutton’s 30th year in Catholic education. Her passion for sciences and maths initially saw her consider studying pharmacy, but a conversation with her family highlighting her ability to connect with and help others set her on a teaching path. Hutton is a lifelong learner, having completed a Bachelor of Education in Maths and Science, a Graduate Certificate in Catholic Studies, a Masters of Educational Leadership and currently completing a Masters of Professional Studies in Theology. “I was quite a shy person, and speaking in front of other people didn’t come naturally, but I loved teaching from the moment I started my teaching course,” she says.

“I’ve been offered career opportunities outside of teaching, and every time I’ve said ‘no’ because I love working with young people and staff. As a collective in a school, you can see the impact you have on helping young people achieve their dreams. I can’t see myself doing anything else.” A good day at work for Hutton is walking around the classrooms and corridors and seeing the 830 students engaged in learning and being nurtured. “Our students know their teachers genuinely care for them,” says Hutton. “We have a responsibility to prepare our students for the future by encouraging them to think outside the box and to be independent, confident, resilient and curious. We want them to give things a go, not take everything at face value, and be discerning when they make a decision. Our students are talented and dedicated to their learning – but I suppose I am biased!” ● SARAH MARINOS

You could get lost in space and time in this grand Victorian. With its accommodation spread over three roomy levels, the modernised areas opt for old-world styling and the lift further challenges accurate dating. From the front door to the gazebo-style canopy over the carport at the rear, refined features are laid on thick. The kitchen has a custom, marble island and a double AGA stove. Think roasts and scones sorted. The bedroom on the lower level is ideal for privacy-seeking teens. On the top level, the main bedroom vaunts a huge walk-in wardrobe, marble en suite and access to the front balcony. Reached through the retreat on the lower ground level, the terrace looks right for garden parties, especially with that gazebo in sight. ● KAY KEIGHERY
