I’d venture to say that there isn’t an AFL player, even one whose body has been pummelled relentlessly season after season, who would rate themselves stronger than a young woman named Maddie Riewoldt. A member of the famous footy family, she died aged 26 from aplastic anaemia, and set in motion a gesture of courage and conviction from her family, who started Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision. The annual fundraising match between St Kilda and Richmond, endeavouring to find treatments and one day a cure for the rare blood disorder, is this weekend. Barrack hard for the cause. ●

COVER STORY

W

hen this year’s Maddie’s Match takes place on Sunday – AFL teams Richmond and St Kilda play each other to raise funds to combat Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes – Maddie Riewoldt’s mother Fiona Riewoldt will no doubt be remembering the young woman she says was “my best friend”. “She was very funny, very dry. She loved music – Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift. She was feisty, she was loyal; she was so many things,” Riewoldt says. “She was a strong, strong person and a mad sportsperson – she was like a walking football encyclopedia.” It’s no wonder: her brother Nick Riewoldt, whom she idolised, is a former Saints captain, while cousin Jack Riewoldt, a three-time Coleman Medallist, plays for the Tigers. This is the fourth Maddie’s Match since Maddie’s death from aplastic anaemia – whereby her body stopped producing enough new blood cells – in 2015. Riewoldt says that she’s overwhelmed by the support that teams and spectators have shown. Watching the crowd on the day – so many wearing Maddie’s favourite colour, purple, and using the hashtag #FightLikeMaddie – she says: “I get really touched. I have to stop and pinch myself sometimes, to see what we’ve achieved. [Losing a child] is a very lonely path and this has taken a lot of that loneliness out, because I never cease to marvel at the amount of people who have come on board.”

Fiona Riewoldt, left, and AFL journalist Sam Lane, right, are fulfilling Maddie’s promise. KARON PHOTOGRAPHY

Maddie Riewoldt fought hard in her battle with a rare blood disorder, and her passionate AFL family fights on to raise funds to find a cure.

Goal in sight

Wo r d s

After Maddie was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 21 and life began to revolve around blood transfusions and medication, Riewoldt did everything with her daughter. But the illness Maddie faced proved to be unrelenting and cruel, chipping away at her body’s resources even though she’d often look as beautiful as before. “It used to distress her when people

R AC H E L L E U N R E I C H

into action. “There have been moments as a mother when I’ve gone, ‘Why us? Why my daughter? Why did she have to suffer like that?’ I could wallow, but that doesn’t do anything, it doesn’t change anything.” For her, it’s about moving forward with both the memories of Maddie and her loss as constant companions. “People who say it’s time to ‘move on’ – that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. You don’t wish it on

“I’ve always known that football has the power to speak about things that are so much bigger than sport; that is one of the great powers of the code,” Lane says. “In this case, what we’ve seen through essentially one family’s experience, is something really important that’s able to be discussed, explored and shared, and is awareness and fund raising along the way. Riewoldt is one of the most

approves. Maddie’s life on earth might have ended, but the connection between the pair remains. Riewoldt tells a story of how Maddie once urged her to listen to a remix song she thought her mother would know, hilariously mispronouncing Que Sera Sera as “Q Sara Sara”. After Maddie’s death, Riewoldt and her husband travelled to a tiny town in Germany and visited a musical instrument museum.

“The fact that her name is being said so many times, every day, by people who didn’t even meet her, is a wonderful testament to her and how hard she fought.” FIONA RIEWOLDT

would look at her and say, ‘You’re not sick – you don’t look sick’,” Riewoldt says. “She’d say, ‘People don’t realise I need blood to live’.” One day, in hospital, “we sat there when things were pretty grim, even though we still thought she’d come home. She said, ‘When I get out, even if I can’t work again, I want to help people understand what this is.’ She wanted to make a difference. And I promised her that. Now, I’m fulfilling that promise.” The result was Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision (MRV), a charity that aims to fund research into Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes that will lead to better treatments and, hopefully, a cure. Since 2015, it has raised more than $7 million, some of which has established the National Aplastic Anaemia Registry and the first-ever National Research Symposium in Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes. Riewoldt dismisses the idea that she’s unusual by turning her sorrow

your worst enemy, to lose a child. And it will never be any different. I have good days and really rotten days and you have to turn the rotten ones around.” For Dr Lucy Fox, Bone Marrow Failure Fellow at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, clinical hematologist, and recipient of an MRV doctoral degree scholarship, hearing from those within the Riewoldt family helps her remember the goal. “It brings the focus back to the patients and their families,” Dr Fox says. “It’s so important to remind the public of what some people go through, and also to inspire and encourage us as researchers to keep striving. We need the momentum, the energy and collaboration that comes from this conversation.” Someone who’s kept the conversation going is Channel 7 sports journalist Sam Lane, who has built a connection with MRV since it began.

famous names in modern-day footy … when the Riewoldt family and the wider movement ask, ‘Can you help?’ you say, ‘Absolutely’.” When Riewoldt and her husband Joe attend Maddie’s Match this weekend, along with Maddie’s siblings and two nephews, it will be another opportunity to do something they love to do: talk about Maddie. “She was larger than life, and she deserves to be talked about. I think sometimes people avoid mentioning her for fear of upsetting me, but I love to talk about Maddie,” Riewoldt says. “The fact that her name is being said so many times, every day, by people who didn’t even meet her, is a wonderful testament to her and how hard she fought. We’re just the storytellers; she’s the one who did all the hard work.” Riewoldt, who wears her daughter’s elephant ring around her neck every day, knows in her heart that Maddie

“In the last room, there was a set of gramophones, and the woman conducting the tour picked up an old Bakelite LP and said, ‘You might recognise this song’. It was Doris Day singing Que Sera Sera. It was one of those little things, Maddie telling us it was OK.” ● ● mrv.org.au Shot on location at qthotelsandresorts.com/ melbourne AFL: MADDIE’S MATCH \ June 30, 1.10pm, Marvel Stadium For Maddie’s Match merchandise to go shop.saints.com.au; also available at the Saints Locker store at RSEA Park, Moorabbin. uring my visit to the city of Hoi An in Vietnam over Easter this year, I stumbled upon a lot of street food that I had never tried. Though I have tried banh xeo many times before in Australia, I sampled one of the best ones yet on a street stall tucked under a large palm tree along one of the main streets of Old Town Hoi An. Banh xeo is a savoury Vietnamese pancake – very similar to a crepe – made from rice flour, coconut and turmeric, which makes it gluten free. It was crispy on the outside and had a good amount of filling of prawns, thinly sliced pork belly, bean sprouts and lots of fresh Asian herbs. You can easily make it vegetarian by substituting fried tofu for the pork belly and prawns. Eating that banh xeo, sitting on small plastic chairs, watching the traffic go by as motorcyclists manoeuvre from every direction is organised chaos, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. ●

CHRISTIAN ROCCHI / FOOD STYLING EMMA ROSEN

Banh xeo (Vietnamese gluten-free pancakes) Ingredients (Serves 4) 1 ∑ cups rice flour 2 tbsp cornflour 1 tsp turmeric powder Pinch of salt 400 ml coconut cream ∑ cup water 100g cooked pork belly, thinly sliced 12 cooked prawns, peeled 2 cups bean sprouts 3 carrots, peeled and julienned ∏ bunch spring onions, finely sliced 1 bunch Vietnamese mint 1 bunch coriander 1 lime Nuoc cham sauce ∏ cup warm water ∏ cup caster sugar ∏ cup fish sauce (use soy for vegetarian option) 1/3 cup lime juice 1 red chilli, finely diced

Method ■ In a large bowl, combine the two flours, turmeric, salt, coconut cream, and water and whisk until you get a smooth batter. Set aside for 20-30 minutes. ■ Heat a 20cm non-stick fry pan over medium heat. Add in 3 prawns and a few pieces of pork and fry for a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. ■ Next, add 2 tbsp of oil and a ladle of batter to the pan, swirling to coat the base and slightly up sides of the pan. Cook with the lid on for 5 minutes or until crispy and golden on the base. Scatter with bean sprouts, carrot, spring onions and herbs. Add in the cooked prawns and pork. Fold to enclose like you would an omelette. Repeat with extra batter and ingredients. ■ For the nuoc cham sauce, combine all ingredients into a bowl, and mix well. ■ Serve the banh xeo with nuoc cham and chilli sauce (optional) and a squeeze of lime. ●

Single-fronted cottages have an enduring charm. They are warm and welcoming, respond enthusiastically to TLC and make a very pretty addition to the streetscape. No. 65 is certainly an attractive presence in Thomson Street with its impeccable finish and gorgeous red highlights against the palest pink background. Inside, the home has a Scandinavian feel with white walls, timber floors and an emphasis on light and airy freshness. The front bedroom has a built-in wardrobe, and is followed by a second bedroom. The family bathroom is next and continues the fresh palette. Floor-to-ceiling tiles are gleaming white and the timber is in the form of a practical and stylish long bench with inset basin with mirrored cupboards above. The full-width living, dining and kitchen area is a calm and delightful space. Wide windows draw in light at the side of the room, and windows and double doors do the same at the rear. The cohesive look continues in the kitchen with timber and white cabinetry. Deep drawers add a convenient dimension to the storage and stainless steel appliances and a pantry increase the functionality. Double doors open to the rear timber deck – sunny, northfacing and private. It’s an ideal area to entertain or just enjoy the day. At the end of this pleasant spot, red double doors open to a beautiful studio or third bedroom. Running alongside the rear section of the house is a long storage area with a second toilet.
