The editor’s desk

When Melbourne cruelly lost the beloved Sisto Malaspina, who had run Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar on Bourke Street since 1974, the tributes warmly reflected on his pioneering role in our coffee culture. It was a loving reminder of the early Italian influence on this city, and that contribution continues – with typical passion – in the next generation across food, the arts and fashion. Jane Rocca spoke to four youthful Melburnians of Italian heritage who, with a respectful touch of nostalgia, are the modern custodians of their culture in this town and the ongoing wonderful wave of influence. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am Gary Mehigan ” … and I’m a judge on MasterChef Everybody asks me what will be different with

season 11 of MasterChef Australia, how can this concept still work? If you compare season one to 11, they’re chalk and cheese. Since we started the show, the food landscape has changed dramatically. The conversation around food has too, and it means we’re seeing a higher standard every year we come back to TV. This season’s MasterChef brings more diversity in food. Our food has become more spicy and textural. The slippery to smooth, gooey to crunchy. We see influences from south-east Asia – Thai and Vietnamese, Indian, Malaysian. What we get to see is various contestants interpret food in a different way; an 18-year-old might approach a dish completely differently to a 40-year-old. The show not only changes the lives of those who compete, but mine has shifted from having a life as a restauranteur and working as a chef – if you like, a relatively narrow band of daily experiences – to one where that is amplified and I get to travel a lot for my work. My fascination with food has become much more global. We never expected the show to become a worldwide hit. We are broadcast in 180 countries, watched by 20 million people including in India, South America, Brazil, the UK and France. Every year I think that season might be the last but it hasn’t been the case. I am living my dream job. George Calombaris, Matt Preston and I describe ourselves as the three ultimate food nerds. We went on a boys’ trip to celebrate 10 years of the show last year. We did a 16-day tour and visited Naples, Barcelona, the Caribbean and more. We reset, recalibrated, researched and got some great life experience along the way. I’d love to see us all move into more travel-based food shows. Aussie audiences don’t want their celebrities to get too big for their boots – they acknowledge you with your first name if they see you on the street. I get a lot of that when I visit a supermarket or go to the post office. ● MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA \ 7.30pm, Sunday to Thursday, Network Ten

COVER STORY The hot-right-now custodians of

Melbourne’s rich Italian culture add their own flair.

new wave of second and third-generation Italians is helping shape the cultural heart of Melbourne, quietly doing their bit to crank up our art, food, fashion and bar scene. From four-time Archibald People’s Choice award winner Vincent Fantauzzo (best known for his portrait of Heath Ledger) to food and wine purveyors, King & Godfree cousins Jamie Valmorbida and Luca Sbardella, Melbourne’s close link to Italy has long been part of the city’s DNA but there’s a new age upon us.

VI N C E N T FA N TAUZ ZO

KRISTOFFER PAULSEN

Having a distinctive Italian name always identified me as Italian and now having a hotel named after me is a gutsy move for Art Series Hotels. That they were willing to go with what might be a difficult name for people to pronounce is even gutsier. I was asked the question could they call it The Vincent hotel, but I liked The Fantauzzo [open in Brisbane]. I constantly have people ask me how to say my name, but it’ll be fun and interesting, I guess, to see how people respond to it. Their hotel concepts are all about celebrating Australian artists and now I can represent the Italian-Australian version with a very Italian name. I come from a family of creative Italians; they were chefs, sculptors and into painting. Food has had the biggest impact on my family and Asher (Keddie) and I cook Italian food at home every night and make a point of eating with the kids. I have been talking about opening a cake shop with my cousin next year – that’s the plan and dream to bring some of my grandfather’s pastries to life. What you’re seeing in Melbourne now is a return to Italian traditions by younger generations. When I was young we strayed from the tradition of making salami, the sauce, our own wine. Now, with the influx of Italians in Melbourne, we see a lot of this nostalgia coming back. When I travel to Italy, my cousins are more contemporary than the Italians here and they have this fascination that we are doing what their parents did. It’s a weird time warp but one that really identifies Italians in Australia.

Everything I do in business stems from my Italian heritage. We really want to demonstrate what we enjoy about Italy and bring it to our city. My grandfather came out from Italy in the ’50s and did so well in Melbourne that it gave us the opportunity to grow his legacy at the original site in Carlton. Italian cuisine and hospitality is definitely changing in Melbourne. You have Ronnie Di Stasio and Guy Grossi who continue their legacy of traditional Italian food, but I see us as a new wave of Italians. Our business is a hybrid model, which is really obvious in Italy now – what that means is you don’t just go into a deli and buy your basics, you can eat a panini, have a pasta, stay for dinner and drink wine. We bring the whole aspect to the table. Johnny’s Green Room [upstairs at King & Godfree] is very Italian but the most relaxed version of Italy and a good representation of what bars in Milan and Rome are starting to look like. We wanted that vibe that pays homage to my grandfather and reflects something I take from Italy every time I go there and replicate a piece of it in Melbourne.

The reopening of King & Godfree [in Carlton] salutes our heritage and what my grandfather established. It’s also a celebration of Italian food and its culture. Luca Sbardella [cousin] and I are passionate about design – we wanted to create a modern Italian corner. Music is also important part of the arrival of Johnny’s Green Room on the rooftop – it’s a perfect way to merge Italian bar life with music and playlists via a collaboration with Hope St Radio, a not for profit organisation in Melbourne. In the ’70s and ’80s, Carlton was in its heyday – it was preceded by the huge influx of Italians who came here in the ’50s and ’60s. I think in many ways that is happening again now. There have been a lot of young Italians coming to Melbourne and hopefully within the next 10 years we’ll see another resurgence of Italian culture. It’s our mission to keep our Italian legacy alive in Melbourne – from the staples my Nonno imported like tuna and olive oil, and then my father with coffee, to what we’re doing in food retail and hospitality, is a sign that Italian culture is an essential ingredient to Melbourne’s identity.

I’m a second-generation Italian and I first visited Italy with my family in 1988, in 2001 on my own and since then gone back as part of my work. It continues to educate and reconnect me to my heritage. The loss of Pellegrini’s Sisto Malaspina in Melbourne last year really affected everybody, not just Italians. Whether you went to Pellegrini’s for a pasta, granita or coffee you had an intimate experience – it’s the familiarity and comfort that really saluted the Italian way. I helped bring Bulgari’s Italian Jewels exhibition to the gallery in 2016. Through this I’ve been able to travel to Italy for research and always bring new information home. In 2012, the NGV merged our Australian and International galleries to deliver bigger exhibitions and we’ve since been able to be on par with some of the world’s best museums in bringing shows like Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier to our city. Melbourne has an appetite for fashion and art and we’re on par with V&A in London and the Met in New York. We can do big-scale exhibitions and present an artist’s life and work in a way that is quite major now.

I joined my father’s business Dom Bagnato in 2010; first as a graphic designer and now as creative director and brand manager. My earliest memory with dad was working with him in his Bourke Street shop, sitting on the back floor and playing – it ingrained a work ethic in my mind. My Italian heritage is part of my DNA; it’s who I am and the soul of the brand. We travel for our collections every year to Italy and it inspires what we do. We lap up the culture and bring aspects of it back for our Australian audience. The secret to getting it right is all about sticking to your guns, staying true to your style and knowing that what works on the streets of Italy doesn’t translate here entirely. I didn’t want to enter a family business and land on my feet. I stayed in the background and moved slowly. It’s been in the past three years that my role has really changed. The thing that has driven me is the sense of pride of what my dad has created from a young age. It makes me want to keep this going for as long as possible. We are in the feelgood business in clothing – if people come in to buy a suit, they do so to feel good and want to wear it. ●

est known for his regular gig as part of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, Steven Van Zandt is a force in his own right and found time in his busy schedule to round up his 16-piece band to make a new album Summer of Sorcery. The 68-year-old New York-based musician made a career writing songs for other artists too – including our own Jimmy Barnes on his Working Class Man album in 1985. He helped Springsteen on the hit album Born to Run in 1975 (writing

the signature guitar part on the title track) and in 1985 created the protest group Artists United Against Apartheid to record Sun City with Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, U2, George Clinton and Ringo Starr. The album and single raised more than $US1 million for anti-apartheid projects at the time and spoke out again the Reagan administration in the US and was banned in apartheid South Africa itself. “My ’80s albums were political and autobiographical and I wanted to get

artistic breakthrough for me and I feel totally liberated. ““Summer of Sorcery is fictional by comparison. It’s my attempt at making little movies and acting them out via different roles in the songs.” Van Zandt’s friendship with Springsteen goes back to their youth in the mid-60s on the Jersey Shore. That friendship remains just as strong as it was back then – with Van Zandt even asking Springsteen to be his best man at his wedding on New Year’s Eve in 1982. “Bruce still makes me laugh,” Van Zandt says. “We have been together a long time and became friends because we were the only ones who treated rock’n’roll as a religion. We weren’t doing it for a hobby or on the weekends and going back to normal working life. It was everything to us. “I was the only one who felt like that who he knew and vice-versa. We’ve pretty much stuck to that way of thinking since our youth.” ●

away from both of those things this time around,” Van Zandt says. “I was sick of writing about me and what makes the world go around. I had all those questions answered somewhat back then. I was really political during a time in history when the politics felt very hidden and it was necessary to shine a light on things like South Africa. “We toppled a government and got Nelson Mandela out of jail, don’t let anybody kid you, that’s how it got done. I wanted to pool my friends together and talk about issues and really use our celebrity for a good purpose. It wasn’t something you saw back then – we broke new territory.” Summer of Sorcery steps back in time and happily gets stuck somewhere in the ’60s – a place of first love and other first-times for nostalgia’s sake. “There’s a hint of my own life too, but it’s different this time,” he says of the concept album. “It’s a wonderful
