There’s an old-school element to journalist and broadcaster Waleed Aly in the way he wears his heart on his sleeve when getting to the heart of a matter. In the jumble of the news cycle, his voice is loud and clear in its articulate yet authentic delivery. He’s one of the most recognisable faces on TV and yet – with fearless political interviews to his name and a way of handling Peter Helliar’s cheek to his right on The Project panel – the Wesley College alumnus is still taken aback by his commercial success. And it all started with a schoolyard radio show. Journalist Luke Dennehy met him for our cover story. ●

Marking 10 years of The Project, co-host Waleed Aly reflects on his first byline and the path to the popular show.
W
aleed Aly remembers it like it was yesterday, when he first realised his love of journalism. It was around the late ’80s, when he was growing up in the eastern suburb of Vermont and attending the local primary school. “I think I was in grade five and I knew I wanted to be a journalist, and I came up with the idea to put together a newspaper for our street,” he says. “It didn’t get off the ground, I only had one story based on my mum telling me a couple of plants had been plucked out of front yards – that was my front page lead.” He scrapped that idea but turned to broadcasting, starting a radio show at Vermont Primary School that he called VPSFM. “We would broadcast every Wednesday for 15 minutes, when everyone was inside eating lunch before they let you out to the playground,” Aly says. “We would put this show together, play a few songs and competitions. “I did that all the way through grade six.” Although he never gave up his media dream, Aly found himself steering towards law during his high school years. He ended up moving to Wesley College to study the International Baccalaureate for years 11 and 12 and went onto law at university. But Aly’s passion for the press and newspapers, in particular, was never far from mind. “I remember when I started writing, the first piece I had published in a major newspaper was in The Sunday Age on November 24, 2002,” he says. “I remember that date because I couldn’t sleep, waiting for the newspaper to be delivered.” His mother was very proud of her son and remains so to this day, cutting out and keeping most of the articles he has written, although this is now more difficult as Aly is prolific across so many forms of the media. From that innocent beginning on an everyday Australian street, Aly – now 40 and the co-host of Network 10’s Logie-winning panel program The Project, in its tenth year – has become one of the most talked-about figures in Australian broadcasting. As a Gold Logie recipient (in 2016), one half of a high-profile couple (with wife Dr Susan Carland) and on air at prime time, it doesn’t matter what Aly says, he often makes the news. Aly has his critics and there is a cottage industry, it seems, of clickbait journalism that hinges off his comments on issues of the day. However, Aly is careful to not buy into it or respond. “I’m aware of it because you can’t avoid it,” Aly says. “People constantly talk to me about what’s

written, but I would never look for it. I think it’s important not to, because you cannot allow yourself to go out on air thinking about what headlines will be taken from what you say.” This was particularly relevant in March this year when, in the aftermath of New Zealand’s Christchurch massacre, audiences were looking to what Aly, of Muslim faith, would say. It was a tough time for Aly but he shone through, delivering an editorial for The Project following the terror shooting, later interviewing New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern – who greeted him with an embrace – and Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Carland, an accomplished academic, writer and broadcaster, was there every step of the way leading to that editorial, as she is every day of his life. “She is incredibly supportive,” Aly says of Carland. “Pretty much every flash point in my career or my life, she’s got me through it. “I’m sort of loath to talk about it, but that’s
he’s constantly busy. Aly is a passionate supporter of the Richmond Football Club and rarely misses a game, sometimes flying interstate to watch his beloved Tigers, and is a huge supporter of Melbourne Storm rugby team, regularly going to matches when he can. Aly is also a talented musician, playing guitar in the band Robot Child. This love of music came at a similar time to when he discovered journalism, back at primary school in Vermont. Like many of his generation, his first instrument was the recorder. “I have a really strong memory of music class,” Aly says. “I think there was a drawing of a tree on the wall, and we were all given a leaf and had to write our favourite song. “You were meant to write things like Home Among The Gum Trees, but I said to the teacher, ‘How do you spell Bohemian Rhapsody?’ and I’ve been into music ever since.”
“You cannot allow yourself to go out on air thinking about what headlines will be taken from what you say.” certainly what happened during the whole Christchurch thing. “The piece to camera I did I started writing at 5.40pm, and the show was on air at 6.30pm. “The preceding hour or two was basically spent talking to Susan trying to figure out whether I should be doing this. “I think in the end she said I shouldn’t do it, but I reached the conclusion that I should. But there is no way I could have reached that conclusion without talking to her. “I was ringing her in three-minute increments for probably an hour or two. “She is pretty much the only person in the world who would give me good advice in that moment.” Aly started permanently on The Project in January, 2015. He had been a regular on the show for a few years before that, but at the time he was thought to have a very long career ahead of him at the ABC. Aly accepts it was a roll of the dice to move to commercial television, and it wasn’t a decision he took lightly. “Commercial TV is famous for spitting people out very quickly, and to be honest, I was far from convinced I would do a good job. It was a big risk.” At home, the father to Aisha, 16, and Zayd, 12, admits his mind is never far away from work and
Aly hopes to be part of The Project for a long time to come, and has a humble perspective of his career on commercial television. “I’m convinced someone who matters will one day wake up and look at the TV and see me, and go ‘Why is he here, how did that happen?’ ” he says. “I do still feel I’m doing somebody else’s job.” ● THE PROJECT \ Celebrates its 10th anniversary with a special 90-minute episode at 6.30pm on July 19, Network 10.

ost people I used to speak to would be squeamish about the idea of eating salted egg yolk. Nowadays, it can be found in most Chinese restaurants across Australia and diners tend to be more adventurous. Everyone I’ve cooked this dish for are usually curious and a little unsure at the start, but love the taste once they've had it. In fact, many of my friends have asked me for a recipe, so I decided to write one so that people can see just how easy it is to make. Salted egg yolk has been a craze in Asia for many years but, recently, manufacturers have included it in their products – you may have seen salted egg yolk-flavoured potato crisps or fish skins. The yolks can be found in the freezer section of most Asian grocers. They are salted for three to four weeks, then boiled. Salted egg yolk is often added to sauces to impart creaminess and richness to the dish and is generally cooked with seafood. ●

Salted egg yolk prawns
CHRISTIAN ROCCHI / FOOD STYLING EMMA ROSEN
5 salted egg yolks 12 large prawns, peeled and deveined Salt and white pepper, for seasoning 1 tbsp vegetable oil, extra for frying 2 cloves garlic, minced 20g butter 4 curry leaf stalks, stem removed Batter for prawns 2 egg yolks, beaten 1 cup corn flour Method ■ Steam the salted egg yolks for about 20 minutes. Once steamed, mash the yolks with a fork and set them aside. ■ Pat the prawns dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

■
Season the prawns with a pinch of salt and white pepper. Dip the prawns in the beaten egg yolk then lightly dredge them in cornflour. Heat 1 cup of oil in a wok and fry the prawns for approximately 30 seconds. Fry them in batches so that you do not overcook them. Remove and set aside to drain on paper towels. In a clean wok or pan, add in the minced garlic, butter and a tbsp of vegetable oil and saute for 30 seconds over medium heat. Next add in the curry leaves. Be careful – this will spatter a little. Add in the smashed egg yolks and stir over saute minced garlic in some vegetable oil and butter for 30 seconds. Keep stirring until you get a creamy consistency. Add the prawns back into the wok and coat with the sauce. Serve immediately with warm cooked rice and garnish with fresh herbs. ●

HOME & ARCHITECTURE
The changing face of Collingwood
I N S PI R E D BY N E W YO R K
C
onnecting the street culture of Collingwood to the establishment elegance of East Melbourne, Gurner’s latest development on Wellington Street draws inspiration from New York’s trendsetting Meatpacking District. The southern end of Wellington Street will be transformed into a Meatpackers-style “building of buildings” as the $280 million luxury residential and retail precinct Victoria & Vine with 240 high-end apartments in one, two, three, four and five-bedroom layouts starting from $475,000. Designed by Cox Architecture, Victoria & Vine’s nine distinct building forms use juxtaposing materials and finishes to create individual identities and pay homage to the rich tapestry of warehousestyle, historic buildings for which the Meatpacking District and Collingwood are both well known. The 5100-square-metre site is one of the largest infill sites near the CBD and is bordered by Wellington,
Derby and Cambridge streets and Victoria Parade. Developer Tim Gurner says he found inspiration for Victoria & Vine on a trip to the aforementioned New York district, where says he fell in love with the raw materiality of heritage industrial brick buildings. “There are a lot of similarities between New York’s far west side and Melbourne’s inner north. Both areas were originally significant industrial centres, which you can see in the architecture. You’ll find mostly low to mid-rise brick and steel warehouses, with plenty of natural light,” Gurner says. Like the Meatpacking District, Collingwood is coming of age. The formerly rundown inner-city suburb now attracts creative industries and contemporary retail, eateries and bars, and higher-end luxury design. Gurner says Collingwood epitomises the best of Melbourne: “There are so many unique cafes, restaurants and live music pubs literally at every turn which means

it’s bursting with energy from day to night.” Gurner is a key player in this transformation; he and his team have delivered 22 projects within two kilometres in Collingwood, with a particular emphasis on the Foy & Gibson precinct bounded by Wellington, Smith, and Peel and Stanley streets. Designed by William Pitt in 1887, the Foy & Gibson complex is a legacy of the department store and manufacturing empire that once rivalled London and New York dynasties. Victoria & Vine’s nine buildings are carefully curated, says Gurner, to ensure they do justice to the historical significance and aesthetics of the neighbouring Foy & Gibson precinct. Reclaimed brickwork and industrial masonry, metal-framed windows and floor-to-ceiling glass cavities and voids will be applied differently across each of the project’s nine smaller buildings. The project’s combined 200-metre street frontage will be anchored by 11 retail tenancies designed to showcase world-class food and beverage operators as part of Collingwood’s thriving hospitality scene. Victoria & Vine also delivers more than 4500 square metres of resident amenity over four levels. The V&V Private Club will include a rooftop lounge, infinity pool, an outdoor cinema, co-working space and business lounge, NYC-inspired bar and library, and a teppanyaki bar. Two collections have been created to reflect the contrasting locations bookending the project. The Victoria, by renowned interior designer David Hicks, uses opulent marble and warm polished finishes to speak to the East Melbourne end while The Vine’s warehouse-style reclaimed brick, timber and concrete textures echo Collingwood’s heritage. ● LIZ McLACHLAN

Right in the heart of all the fun of Fitzroy – a few steps from Smith Street and a short walk to Brunswick Street – this two-storey terrace puts the past as well as the present at your fingertips. The 19th century is evoked by the lace trim on the exterior, the high ceilings with roses and cornice trim and by fireplaces of carved timber and cast iron. There is also an unusual twist to this home. On the ground floor, a bedroom opens off the hallway, followed by a fullwidth living room. Both these rooms have fireplaces. Then the long kitchen and meals area, with a small courtyard at one end leading to a right-of-way and a larger courtyard with a powder room at the other, forms an L-shape. The kitchen has a slate floor, a gas cooktop, oven and dishwasher. French doors open to the courtyard with its paved surface and vines trailing up the walls. Exposed brick is featured in areas throughout the house, particularly on chimneys. New owners will most likely be tempted to stamp their own personality on the home, although there are endearing aspects to its timeworn look. It is showing signs of wear, but the potential is there for magic to happen. Upstairs, the front bedroom faces north and has the timeless terrace balcony and views to Smith Street. This room, and the second bedroom, have built-in wardrobes. The bathroom has a shower over the bath and a black-andwhite chequerboard floor. The house has heating and laundry facilities.
