Who is Richard Roxburgh? An accomplished actor, film and television director and children’s book author who counts some of Hollywood’s A-listers as friends, yes, but despite all the accolades and rave reviews, above all else Roxburgh is a family man, devoted to his wife, TV personality and cook Silvia Colloca, and their three young children. Journalist Jane Rocca chatted to Roxburgh on all things work, life and family and how he’s loving fatherhood in his 50s. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am Sarah de Witt ” … and I’m a professional tea sommelier I didn’t have a defining “I love tea and I’m gonna

make a career from it” moment, but there was a turning point when I was studying psychology and found that tea de-stressed me. I started with herbal tisanes before transitioning to the hardcore teas. I decided to take a break. I’ve always been entrepreneurial and, being on a student wage with not much to lose, I thought, “Why don’t I just start a business?” I’d been reading about tea and found that the least likely demographic to enjoy it ran from 2035. The perception was that tea was for older people, which I thought was nonsense. There was also a gap in the market: Melbourne’s food, coffee and wine scenes were huge, but tea wasn’t being done justice. In 2014, I opened my first tea business, Impala & Peacock. I fell so in love with it that I never went back to study. I’ll never forget my first customer: he ordered a chai with soy milk and honey on the side, and was genuinely excited about the product, rather than the hundreds who’d walked in and gone, “Oh, you don’t do coffee”, and marched straight out again. I studied and became an accredited tea sommelier with the Australian Tea Masters Association. It was a year-long course covering the fundamentals, science and art of tea with a lot of flavour profiling and testing – every week we’d get a bunch of different teas to analyse and brew. I also run a loose-leaf tea company, as well as Mary Eats Cake. There’s a really creative element to blending tea, and inspiration comes from the weirdest places. I remember washing my hands with an Aesop soap that had rose, cardamom and elderberries through it, and thought I should work on that for a tea blend. Running a business means wearing a lot of different hats. The only constant is that I drink a lot of tea: I always start off with black tea in the morning, then I go to white, then green around lunch, moving towards herbal blends in the afternoon so I can sleep at night. I try not to judge how other people make tea, but there are little things that scratch at me. For instance, milk should always go first. It disturbs me when people put it in last. ● ● maryeatscake.com.au

COVER STORY

H

MICHELLE SMITH

e’s one of Australia’s most acclaimed actors and a film and television director who has written a children’s book. The year ahead truly belongs to Richard Roxburgh, who returns to the big screen in two Australian films that couldn’t be more different. Go Karts is a comedy designed to tug at the heartstrings and features actress Frances O’Connor, while a more serious move is made with Danger Close – a war movie about Australia’s involvement in the Battle of Long Tan starring Travis Fimmel. For someone who has dabbled in Hollywood films ((Mission Impossible 2 and Moulin Rouge, both made in Sydney) and directed his own drama ( (2007’s Romulus, My Father starring Eric Bana), there’s a paternal need that’s fulfilled when working in Australia – particularly now that he has become a dad for the third time, to daughter Luna, aged 15 months. “Seven weeks, that’s the cut-off for me,” says the 56-year-old Roxburgh, who is making a menswear campaign debut with Van Heusen, of the amount of time he can handle away from his family for work. “I came to parenthood at an older stage in life and love that it happened for me. “I thought that ship had long sailed and I had made peace with that but when I finally did become a dad, my spirit was ready for it.” His children, Raphael, 11, Miro, 7 and Luna put life in perspective for the ambitious actor, who is also adored for his role as Cleaver Greene in the ABC TV legal drama Rake, which returned to our screens last weekend. “I think people like the cheekiness of Cleaver, there is something about his hopelessness that we can all relate to,” says Roxburgh. “In a world that is becoming politically correct and nanny-stated, we long for a person on our screens who breaks away from that and says what he feels.”

Family time: Silvia Colloca and Richard Roxburgh.

Born in Albury, NSW, Roxburgh is the youngest of six children who grew up in the border town until moving to Canberra’s ANU to graduate with a bachelor of economics. His father John, who died at the age of 91 in 2011, was an accountant who ran his own business in the regional town. A desire to act saw him enrol at NIDA, which led to him working with the Sydney Theatre Company before landing his first major TV role as Roger Rogerson in the TV mini-series Blue Murder Murder. Happily married to Milanese actress, cooking author and TV personality Silvia Colloca, Roxburgh admits his ability to work on a variety of TV and movie roles is all thanks to an understanding partner who runs a tight ship back home. Soon after Luna was born, they moved to the hills of Tuscany for a few months and quit the northern beaches of Sydney for a rustic Italian life. Roxburgh, who can speak Italian and has an Italian passport, says it was the perfect escape. “The two

either at the beginning or midway point. “I found the midwinter cold of New York excruciating. I was in an apartment by myself, trudging through snow every night and missing them back home. That’s when we decided to give our eldest boy a 10th birthday present that involved him coming over for two weeks. “He would come into the theatre every day and loved it so much. It was a very special moment in time to see his beaming face arriving.” Over a glass of pinot, he and Blanchett make lists of stage roles they’d love to undertake. The pair has shared the stage for more than two decades and are close buddies. It’s banter between friends, discussions that keep the creative juices flowing and the very real process of being an actor. “We write lists, we talk about the roles we would love to play on stage which we haven’t yet. I guess the fact I make lists means I’m still thrilled by what I do, but not all is always possible,” he says.

boys got an experience at the local school and Silvia and I had time with Luna. We got to eat peasantstyle, good quality food. What I love about the Italians is what they can do with such few ingredients. It’s not about eating like the rich – it’s about making ‘cibo povero’ [poor food] rich in flavour,” he says. The career and family juggle is real, but he says age has mellowed him and while he’s still keenly ambitious to do films, flirt with Hollywood and appear in theatre shows, he’s acutely aware his children will only remain that for a short time. Last January he starred alongside his good friend Cate Blanchett in The Play – a reworking of Chekhov’s Platonov written by her husband Andrew Upton that opened on New York’s Broadway. “I am hopeless away from my family. I would love to be better at it but I am just not. I feel very Italian in that regard,” admits Roxburgh. “When I take on a role overseas there’s a pact the family has to visit –

“As an actor you have to remain alive to all possibilities. I like to dip my toe in around the place, but love to come back home to the glorious northern beaches of Sydney. It’s a balancing act and having Silvia as a partner who has great understanding certainly makes the process easier.” As part of his role with Van Heusen, Roxburgh will also take part in a mentoring panel alongside comedian Nazeem Hussein and Paralympic gold medallist, Invictus Games ambassador and former army officer Curtis McGrath. The actor will share stories about his journey in film and television. “It’s interesting to see I am now at a point in my life where people think of me in that way,” says Roxburgh. “I used to be fairly reckless in youth, but maybe you gather wisdom points as time goes by, you manage to stay alive and I would like to think I was capable of some reasonable advice about life choices these days.” ●

Drysdale also mentors self-confessed “crap housewife” Rowe who, she jokes, missed out on the tidy gene. When Drysdale visits she takes control of Rowe’s kitchen. f there was a record for laughs a minute then Jessica Rowe and Denise Drysdale would be undisputed world champs. When the television personality and entertainment legend get together the giggles flow like champagne, and there’s even the occasional trademark snort from Rowe. There’s a 21-year age gap between the unlikely pair – Drysdale is 70 later this year and Rowe is 48 – but a common love for fun and laughter, which blossomed when the pair were panellists on the set of Channel 10’s morning program Studio 10, has another life in its own chart-topping podcast One Fat Lady and One Thin Lady. Their weekly offering, which has just reached more than 200,000 downloads, is recorded around Rowe’s dining table in Sydney or in the hotel room of Drysdale, who commutes from her home in Queensland to work. “What you hear on the podcast is exactly what happens in real life,’’ Drysdale says. Rowe agrees, saying it’s fun and easy. “There’s no extra agenda or carry-on,” she says. “It’s like dropping in on a friend. It is just Neesie and I chatting, having a great laugh and finding a lot of joy in the everyday things in life. I love doing it – it brings me such joy.’’ The pair had never met before they began working together three years ago, but Rowe’s husband, newsreader Peter Overton, worked with Drysdale on the Ernie Sigley Show and Ernie and Denise in the early 1990s. “We wanted to have fun doing something together,’’ Drysdale says. “The podcast is a continuation of the friendship. “I feel like I’ve known her forever, I could be her mother! It’s so hard to meet good people and make new friends when you’re older, so it’s like a gift from

burnt dinners, while the introduction of panko breadcrumbs has been a “revelation’’. Rowe and Drysdale will take their show on the road later this year for a series of live podcasts around the country. One Fat Lady and One Thin Lady will also feature on Virgin’s in-flight playlist from next month. “We’re also available for conferences and Las Vegas gigs. Everything,’’ Drysdale laughs. ●

ever labour over how to perfectly scatter lounge cushions again after following Jason Grant’s lowmaintenance tips for high-traffic areas. Stylist and author Grant is known for his laid-back home aesthetic – the key to great entertaining areas, he says. The aim is spaces that are lived-in and loved, that reflect your personality. In Melbourne recently for a styling masterclass with World of Style by Porter Davis, Grant revealed just how he pulls off his very Australian approach.

KITCHEN Styling your kitchen for entertaining is no different than for any other occasion; it’s simply about amplifying details to make the ordinary feel extraordinary, Grant says. “Sometimes those high-traffic areas are the kind of places we create to be more functional and we think we can forget about them, but it’s important to give them just as much love,” he says. “It’s about having a little beauty in the everyday.” Small items to focus on in this typically functional room include the fruit bowl, dish rack, soap holder and tea towel, all of which can be updated for relatively little cost, he explains. If you’re someone with a great range of tableware, showcase this proudly by installing some basic shelving. If you don’t have any spare space, the Bondi stylist recommends taking the doors off your existing kitchen cabinetry.

S T Y LI S T & AU T H O R JA S O N G R A N T

LIVIN G ARE A Creating a stylish room is all about investing in quality and timeless pieces, starting with the floor rug. “I always recommend getting the bigger floor rug rather than the smaller one. I think that’s a great way of defining and setting the tone for the living area,” Grant says. Inject some personality into this room by displaying meaningful items on a mantelpiece, sideboard or coffee table. This may include photographs, books, house plants, ceramics, candles, or more functional pieces such as lamps and coasters. “For people who aren’t expert decorators, these are really safe places to experiment and play,’’ he says. ‘‘It’s about finding those places where you can create a little moment.” Limit your spending to pieces you truly love, even if it takes you a while to find them. “I think your home needs to be a sanctuary, somewhere relaxing, and just filling it up can be too much,” Grant says.

DININ G RO O M The dining area is where styling is most likely to deviate from the everyday, but this doesn’t mean it requires hours of preparation. Simply by placing on the table some handpicked flowers in a vase, or a tray of objects found in nature, such as interesting stones and leaves, is way of instantly bringing beauty inside the home. Enjoy being creative with your table setting, start with a linen tablecloth and layer with handmade

plates, unscented candles (“You want to be enjoying the meal, not the scent of the candle”), elegant glassware, napkins and decorative ceramics of varying heights. One way to encourage the rest of the family to maintain your look year-round is to keep decorative items on the dining table, therefore avoiding it becoming a dumping ground when not in use. “Just putting something on the table leaves less space for laundry and ironing!” Grant explains. ●

Lamington Wag-Anna Makes 15 100g (3½ oz) raspberry jam 200g (7 oz) dark chocolate 20g (¾ oz) cocoa butter (optional) 150g (5½ oz) shredded (desiccated) coconut Sable biscuit 75g (2¼ oz) unsalted butter 50g (1¾ oz) icing sugar (confectioners’ sugar) 1 egg 100g (3½ oz/ 2/3 cup) plain (allpurpose) flour, sifted 50g (1¾ oz) cocoa powder (unsweetened) ½ vanilla bean, seeds scraped Marshmallow 160g (5¾ oz) caster (superfine) sugar ½ vanilla bean, seeds scraped 6 sheets titanium-strength gelatine,

softened in cold water 2 tbsps glucose syrup Method ■ To make the sable, preheat the oven to 160°C (315°F). Line a baking tray with baking paper. ■ Put the butter and icing sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Starting on low speed, then increasing to medium speed, beat until pale and creamy. ■ Continue beating as you add the egg. Gradually add the flour, cocoa and the vanilla seeds and mix until a smooth dough forms. ■ Gather the dough into a ball, shape into a flat rectangle, then wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least four hours. ■ On a floured surface, roll the

chilled dough out to 5mm (¼ inch) thickness. Use a 5cm (1½ inch) diameter cookie cutter to cut the dough into 30 discs. ■ Lay the discs on the prepared baking tray and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden. Cool on the tray then set aside in an airtight container until ready to use. ■ To make the marshmallow, combine 100ml (3½ fl oz) of water in a saucepan with the sugar and vanilla seeds. Bring to the boil. ■ Meanwhile, put the softened gelatine and the glucose syrup in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. ■ Turn the mixer onto medium speed and pour the boiling liquid into the mixing bowl with the gelatine mixture. Increase to high speed for about 3–5 minutes until the

marshmallow has cooled (make sure it’s still slightly warm, once it sets it will be hard to push into shape). ■ Lay 15 of the sable discs on a tray lined with baking paper and dollop 1 cm (3/8 inch) of jam in the centre. ■ Put the marshmallow into a size-10 piping bag and squeeze a 2cm dollop onto each sable disc. ■ Sandwich the biscuits together and transfer to the refrigerator until the marshmallow has set. ■ Put the dark chocolate and cocoa butter, if using, in a small microwave-proof bowl and melt in the microwave until two-thirds of the chocolate is melted. Stir the chocolate until completely smooth and cooled down to 29°C (84°F). ■ Use a fork to dip the marshmallow biscuits into the melted chocolate, making sure the entire surface is covered. Allow excess chocolate to drip off, then place on a tray lined with baking paper or acetate. ■ Cover one side of the Wag-Annas with shredded coconut and transfer to the refrigerator to set. Some Twist The shelf life of the Wag-Annas is about one day before the chocolate starts cracking and the biscuit starts to soften: you really need to be eating it with a crunch. ●

Stokehouse (fancy fine-diner upstairs), Pontoon (allday Basque-inspired grill) and Paper Fish (kiosk fish and chipper) – has settled into its new skin. Pontoon is slick, an industrial, designer 250-seater, softened by squashy leather banquettes, warm woods, and chunky nautical rope. It’s prime party territory, sporting a Euro vibe, well-stocked bar and snacky shareables that run all day. Come early, stay late, bring the dog, watch the sunset, grab coffee on a morning walk, or brunch on brekkie pizzas, granola in a glass or bacon bloody marys. The only people it doesn’t cater to are early risers, unless 11am on weekends is early for you. At Pontoon’s heart is fire. Nearly every dish has

an ingredient that’s spent time on the four-metre grill, in the smoker or the pizza oven, all fired by charcoal and redgum. Green pizza is a signature, its blackened, chewy base cooked on the stone oven, topped with hazelnut pesto, charry broccolini and green beans, held back from being too guilt-free with ricotta and a fine grating of pecorino. Tuna ceviche, designed to hold in one hand while you have a beer in the other, is a smoked chilli number in a crunchy, iceberg lettuce cup, the dressing blasting the delicate fish flavours. hampagne is not just a wine, it is a perfect universe that combines a rational, outstanding taste experience with joyful, irrational, emotional moments.” Benoit Collard loves champagne. Given he’s executive director of Piper-Heidsiek, one of France’s oldest and most awarded champagne houses, you’d assume he would. But Collard, in Melbourne recently to announce a three-year partnership between Piper-Heidsiek and the Australian Open, is passionate to the point of being poetic about the stuff. The charm and accent help. Champagne, Collard believes, “is about joyful experiences, unique encounters, moments shared with friends and family, and even more intimate moments”.

“With Christmas and New Year’s Eve in summer, champagne naturally fits with the Australian lifestyle.”

BENOIT COLLARD

MICHEL JOLYOT

Since it was established in 1785 (it was a favourite of Marie Antoinette, apparently), Piper-Heidsiek has also partnered with the Cannes Film Festival and the Oscars, but this is their first tennis tournament. So why the Australian Open? “Piper-Heidsiek has been seducing more and more champagne drinkers in Australia over the last couple of years,” says Collard. “Australia is now our No.1 market. We wanted to make sure that we communicate the personality of the brand through a setting that conveys the right message for us.” It wasn’t all about the tennis, though. The food, wine and entertainment on offer at the Australian Open were also drawcards, he says, as was Melbourne itself. Collard is a long-time fan of the city having done a semester of his MBA in Melbourne 20 years ago. He’s been a regular visitor ever since, a witness to the growing maturity of Melbourne’s dining scene. “Piper-Heidsiek is present in more than 100 countries, so we have a lot of opportunities to travel around the world, and in my mind Melbourne has become the world-wide capital of bistronomy, the combination of gastronomy and a bistro-style kind of atmosphere,” he says. “Melbourne is the capital for creative, innovative

and authentic cuisine in an informal, yet elegant, atmosphere. In my view the Australian Open perfectly fits with the identity and the culture of Melbourne.” At next year’s Open punters will be able to drink Piper-Heidsiek in nearly all the restaurant and bar venues at Melbourne Park. Mostly this will mean the trademark red and gold non-vintage brut cuvee, the wine that’s driven Piper-Heidsiek’s popularity in Australia. Collard, however, plans to use the Australian Open to teach Australians the joys of champagne beyond cuvee brut. Certain venues will

be pouring vintage champagne, rosé champagne and some “exclusive cuvees that will be released in Australia in September or October”. Collard says that markets in Australia, Canada and Asia are driving the direction of champagne at the moment. “When I tell some of my friends in France that Australia is our No.1 market they are surprised,” he says. “But if you combine the wine culture with Christmas and New Year’s Eve in summer, champagne consumption naturally fits with the Australian lifestyle.” ●

The series of 20 oil-on-canvas works use a sombre palette ranging from light sandy tones to rich greens and blues and on through deep charcoal greys and black, reflecting the change in colour as one moves deeper underwater. “The landscape, and what I’m going through personally, always comes through in my art,” says Nowlan, who helps run the family’s online retail business, Grain of Descent, in addition to her artistic practice. “[The exhibition] is dark and moody, but there is a sense of light, where you can see the hope coming through.” Each piece is framed by Nowlan’s father, Rick, a woodwork teacher and carpenter, in an extension of the exhibition’s focus on family ties. ● CERBERUS BY HANNAH NOWLAN \ Exhibition showing at Modern Times, 311 Smith Street, Fitzroy.

Where do you go for inspiration? It’s very easy to find inspiration in Melbourne as the city is steeped in culture. I love visiting the galleries, whether it’s an exhibition at the NGV (such as last year’s Dior show) or a trip to the fabulous new winery/sculpture park Point Leo Estate on the Mornington Peninsula. I am endlessly inspired when visiting my go-to design sources such as Behruz Studio for stunning rugs, Christopher Boots for amazing lighting and Mark Douglass Design for glass-blown objects and lighting.

furniture and homewares, suit any aesthetic. I also love to shop at Cremorne’s Criteria, which imports great furniture and lighting, and Kazari (Prahran) for a touch of the Orient.

The most interesting homewares shop? I love Weylandts in Abbotsford. This store’s stock is always fresh and the hand-crafted items, both

The chairs you most desire? I love a visit to Nicholas & Alistair in Abbotsford for their ever-changing, unique armchairs.

Where to go for beautiful fabrics? Milgate fabrics represents a vast range of designers, with full collections including some of my favourites such as Jim Thompson and Pierre Frey. Tigger Hall Design also showcases some of the very best fabrics and furnishings.

They have a great eye for design, which is reflected in the items that they carefully source from overseas. Each piece has its own identity and really adds personality to an interior.

M A RY O ’ B R I E N

Most inspiring reading? We are lucky in Australia to have top interior design magazines such as Belle and Vogue Living. I also read many international publications such as Veranda, Elle Decor, Architectural Digest and Luxe. I buy design and art books for reference and to see what my friends in the design world are doing. Favourite paint colours? Two of my favourite brands are Murobond and Porter’s Paints. They have a great selection and both offer customisation to work with interior mood boards and sampling.

Armchair by Malatesta & Masson, Italy 1950s, from Nicholas & Alistair.

Secret of a successful room? Editing and more editing. I love giving a room a stand-out piece but it’s important to remember that it’s better to have one star rather than a room full of them vying for centre stage. ● THOMAS HAMEL

Vinegar: To remove watermarks from windows and mirrors, mix one part vinegar and two parts water. To remove dirt from glass, add 1 tablespoon of dishwashing detergent, then wash your windows and buff with a dry cloth. For a natural fabric softener, mix one part white vinegar and two parts water, then add to the final rinse cycle. Lemons: Cut a lemon in half and rub it directly onto brass, copper or chrome to make it shine. To clean tile grout, squeeze some lemon juice onto an old toothbrush and scrub away. You can also rub a cut lemon on shower glass to remove hard-water stains. Got an oil-stained shirt? Rub half a lemon onto the stain and watch the oil break down.

“As important as it is to make your house feel fresh, it’s also important not to use too many chemicals.” Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda): Don’t be put off by tarnished silver; there are a few natural ways to get that shine back. Line a bowl with aluminium foil and fill it with 1 litre of water and 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Drop your silverware in for 10 seconds then remove with tongs and buff; simple. Leaving a few sticks of chalk in your silver drawer will absorb moisture and prevent tarnishing.

There’s never been a better time to visit Vietnam’s capital, with its abundance of history, culture and arguably the best street food on Earth. Start with the chaos and romance of the Old Quarter and work your way out.

A day Rise with the locals and do a lap around Hoan Kiem Lake, crossing the red Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son temple while residents practise tai chi with Hanoi’s emblematic Thap Rua (Turtle Tower) in the background. WELLBEING

T

he growing popularity of positive psychology and life coaching means that seeing a psychologist is becoming more common for people who might not be suffering a mental health crisis. “Even really high functioning people benefit a lot from learning new skills, reviewing where they’re going, looking at relationships and how they can improve,” says Sarah Godfrey, a qualified psychologist and life coach. Godfrey, who runs the practice Moving Mindsets, says working as a life coach means that she helps people gain a deeper understanding of themselves and set goals for personal and professional development. As distinct from psychology, life coaching is

unregulated, and Godfrey notes that it pays to do your research before signing up to somebody. “Anyone interested in coaching needs to look at the coach’s background,” she says. “How long have they been doing it? Remember that coaches aren’t your best friend, they’re there to give you the hard lessons and the good lessons, but they need to have the experience and understanding of people and human behaviour in order to really get you.” Romi Kaufman is a specialist in positive psychology and runs Thriving Mind, which helps both individuals and organisations. A relatively new branch of the discipline, positive psychology is devoted to scientific inquiry into the factors helping people, organisations and communities thrive by building on their strengths and virtues.

“ … in order to truly flourish and get more out of life, we also need strategies to build the positive factors in our lives.”

Psychologist Martin Seligman founded the discipline in 1999 when, as then-president of the American Psychological Association, he “began to redress the primary focus on the negative to also include a focus on the positive,” Kaufman says. “[Positive psychology] … looks at how we can move beyond just managing and coping but how we can move to positive flourishing.” She notes that humans traditionally have been very good at recognising their weaknesses and identifying when things go wrong. “What about the other half of the picture? “When we’re thinking about

wellbeing, is it enough to just fix problems?” Kaufman notes that the absence of a mental health issue doesn’t automatically equate to functioning well in life. “Mental health isn’t just the absence of mental illness … in order to truly flourish and get more out of life, we also need strategies to build the positive factors in our lives.” Godfrey notes that there can still be a stigma around seeing a psychologist. “In America, you have your GP, you have your handyman, you have your psychologist. We’re seen as part of your wellbeing team. It’s not unusual

ROMI KAUFMAN

to see a psychologist; in fact, it’s almost seen as a point of pride.” But with mental health awareness growing, the stigma is weakening. Both Godfrey and Kaufman agree that people interested in seeing a psychologist should be unafraid to check whether they’re the right fit. “I will always speak to potential clients over the phone first,” Kaufman says. “That way, they can get a better feel for me. I can inquire about their reason for attending and make sure that I’m the best person for them.” ● ● movingmindsets.com.au ● thrivingmind.com.au

SAM WOOD \ FITNESS

Think outside the gym Where there’s a will, there’s always a way to work out.

W

hen I first started my online fitness program, some people doubted whether I could have the same success with online participants as I do training with face-to-face clients. How very wrong they were! The truth is, you don’t need to have access to an expensive studio, or even a gym, to achieve incredible results. Here are a few of my favourite exercises that you can do anywhere, any time and that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

INTERVAL RUNNING \ I believe there’s a runner in all of us, and the good news is it’s an incredible workout for your body that can be done anywhere – I love to go for a run when I’m travelling as it’s a great way to explore a new city. You could also take

it a step further by adding intervals to your run. Not only will you get more bang for your buck with less time required and more calories burnt, your body will continue burning calories after your workout has finished. BODY-WEIGHT BURNERS \ The best thing about

body-weight exercises is that the options are endless and you don’t need any equipment. Body-weight exercises can be done in the kitchen, in a park or even in a hotel room. There really are no excuses not to work out! To get the most out of your body-weight moves, pick ones that target multiple muscle groups. My favourite calorie-burning, body-weight exercises include:

501 Church Street, Richmond VIC 3121 Ph: 03 9425 9358 28

DOM A IN REV IEW

BURPEES \ Burpees are a huge calorie burner as they work your legs, chest and core and really get that heart rate going. JUMP SQUATS \ Jump squats engage your lower body, especially those quads. Enjoy the heart rate spike and the leg burn.

PUSH-UPS \ Push-ups are a simple (simple, not easy!) and effective upper body and core exercise with plenty of variations for an added challenge.

MAT-BASED WORKOUT \ You don’t always need to be dripping with sweat or gasping for air for your workout to be effective. A lower-impact workout that works your whole body, a Pilates-style, mat-based routine can be incredibly effective. With compound movements that rely on multiple muscle groups, this helps you to work more than one area at once. Add in some isolation exercises to tone up target areas and feel that deep burn. These workouts are included in my online programs and have become favourites among my 28ers because you can do them just about anywhere. So, now that I’ve given you so many great options, you really have no excuse not to get active! ●

STAIRS \ Running stairs is a great workout that

● 28bysamwood.com

SPLIT LUNGE JUMPS \ Lunges work your lower body but also help to improve your balance and coordination. Jumping to alternate each leg seriously gets your heart pumping. MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS \ Mountain climbers

target your obliques, glutes and hamstrings and the fast-paced motion delivers a solid workout. This is definitely an exercise I love to hate.

CAITLIN MILLS

pushes your heart rate to the max and works multiple leg muscles. Mix it up by running one step a time, then two and even three (safety permitting!). Jog down and allow your heart rate to drop slightly before going again.

Me & My Mentor

ALISON HEARD, ELENA & MIRANDA SPECIAL PROMOTION

A

lison Heard teaches drama, music and theatre studies at Genazzano FCJ College and shares her enthusiasm for the creative arts with her students. For the past four years she’s also been a year 7 homeroom teacher, helping new students to become part of the vibrant school community. Alison has taught performing arts to Elena, now in year 11 and a house captain, and to Miranda who is in year 7 and a co-curricular captain for year 7/8. Both girls see performing arts and being involved in school productions as valuable parts of their education at Genazzano.

I balance academic subjects with music, singing, debating, cricket and swimming. I work better when I’m busy and I’ve learnt an incredible amount through trying different activities. I’m working on my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award so I volunteer every Friday at Kew Library, I’m studying trombone and I’m part of the school stage band. I’ve been on camps to Wilson’s Prom and Anglesea, and waking up at 4am for a long hike would not have been possible without the support of the teachers and girls with me. I’ve played piano since year 2 and started singing and trombone in year 5. Ms Heard taught me music in year 7 and she made the subject fun. I remember playing the glockenspiel and Ms Heard always insisting the instruments were put away correctly when we finished! When I started year 8 I wasn’t sure that I wanted to continue with music but Ms Heard’s enthusiasm and passion for what she teaches were instrumental in me staying with my musical pursuits. She reminded me of the enjoyment that music brings.

MIRANDA SAYS ... I knew no one when I came to Genazzano in year 6 and it seemed to be such a big school! But I felt part of the community here quickly and I made friends by joining co-curricular activities. I’m involved in choir, strings, the netball team, debating, athletics and volleyball. I enjoy extending my skills. I’ve had many favourite moments at school. For the year 7/8 production I worked behind the scenes

and did the lighting. I enjoyed the da Vinci Decathlon – an academic competition between schools, and year 7 camp this year was on Phillip Island. In year 6 I did the father-daughter camp at Mount Eliza and I still remember my dad on the high ropes looking very nervous! I study music with Ms Heard and during every class she encourages us to take that extra step and to be the best we can be. She encourages us to be creative, too. During one composition task, for every note value, we did a little movement to help remember the rhythm– she certainly makes music interesting.

ALISON SAYS ... After finishing degrees in performing arts, music, drama and theatre studies, I was a casual relief teacher. I stepped away from teaching for a while, but I missed the ongoing contact with young people and I came to Genazzano. I chose to be a year 7 homeroom teacher because it’s a wonderful year. Some of the girls are new to the school and I like helping them develop new friendships and get involved in school. We have

about 130 co-curricular activities – from ceramics and chess to AFL umpiring and “Genproductions”, which provides students with the technical skills to put on a production. It would be hard to find a student at Genazzano who isn’t involved in music, drama or theatre. Elena was extremely enthusiastic in music classes. She always had her hand up to ask questions and, when I think of Elena, I immediately think of her commitment to the trombone and the school bands and ensembles. I always encourage students to keep up music because it doesn’t only teach you to play an instrument, you learn to work as part of a group, which is a valuable skill. Miranda is in my year 7 music class and she’s very similar to Elena because of her enthusiasm and focus. She’s performed a few composition tasks this year and she always sets herself that extra challenge. Miranda likes to put herself forward, extend herself and she always does a good job. ● SARAH MARINOS Genazzano FCJ College is launching a general excellence scholarship for girls entering years 8 to 10 in 2019. ● www.genazzano.vic.edu.au/ enrolment/scholarships

Canny Group executive chairman Damian Canny says higher inner Melbourne land prices mean few can afford fully custom-designed homes, so he and his team have created a number of homes that contain the Canny DNA at a more attainable price. “The Plantation has all the hallmarks of our luxury, architecturally designed custom homes from the floorplan to the finishes and detailing,” he says. “There’s a grand entry, an arrivals/mudroom off the garage, extra wide hallways, a skylight over the shower in the main en suite, a substantial kitchen island with an integrated work station nearby and a highly intelligent flow of living and service areas.” The laundry and butler’s pantry connect to the arrivals zone, which leads to the kitchen. Upstairs there’s rumpus space next to three family bedrooms and a powder room to take the pressure off the family bathroom. “We have leveraged 27 years’ experience to create a luxury home with high attention to detail at an attainable price.” The Plantation design includes Miele appliances, double glazing and Caesarstone as standard and design features include exposed stairs against a double-height glazed wall looking onto a garden courtyard. ● LIZ MCLACHLAN

This grand three-storey property has the appearance of an Italian mansion but the amenities (six-basement garage and elevator among them) of an ultra-modern Melbourne home. Located in the coveted Balwyn High School zone and near several parks, it is the ideal home for young families seeking luxury in their everyday life. Setting the tone for the opulence indoors is the street view, showcasing a stone staircase surrounded by landscaped garden beds, pillared entry framing double doors, arched windows and balcony. High ceilings are facilitated on entry via a two-storey void housing the main sweeping staircase and crystal chandelier. A carpeted formal living and dining room is to the right, overlooking the saltwater pool outside. Opposite this room is the guest bedroom with en suite and old-world style study with parquet oak floors and an open fireplace. The open-plan living, dining and kitchen has a marble-top breakfast bar. A butler’s pantry off the main kitchen allows food preparation to be kept out of sight. Bifold doors in the living area open seamlessly to the tiled and lit outdoor dining area with a built-in kitchen/barbecue and another outlook to the pool. Behind the barbecue area is also a pool-equipment room and separate bathroom. Back in the house, the upper floor contains the remaining bedrooms, all of which have walk-in wardrobes and en suites (one is shared). Two are positioned off a central retreat leading to the front balcony overlooking the property. Double doors separate the main bedroom from the rest

Nestled beneath a steeply pitched roof, Hillsbury easily holds its own in the elegant Gascoigne Estate. However, its true power of fascination lies within. With living, dining and rumpus rooms, two studies and a main bedroom with a parents’ retreat, the two-storey house is a gift to families who seek space with grace. The parquet open plan includes a contemporary kitchen with a central island. French doors lead to a deck above a lagoon-like pool and spa that makes a holiday at home better than Bali. The ground-floor main bedroom (with spa en suite) is complemented by three first-floor bedrooms; the one with a study and balcony is ideal for a VCE student. ALISON BARCLAY Agent: RT Edgar, Jeremy Fox 0418 339 650 Price: $3.5 million Auction: 11am, September 1
