Who doesn’t have a soft spot for netball? Most of us would have some experience with the game, even as far back as primary school PE classes (I was an excellent wing attack; sadly my goal shooter dreams were dashed on account of being extremely short). The game has been a cultural stalwart for many years but with increased competition across women’s sports, netball is examining how to remain a force. This week’s cover star is Netball Australia’s new CEO, Melbourne-based Kelly Ryan. She talks to Linda Pearce about her new job, and her unorthodox introduction to working in sport. ●

Homecoming Michelle Vergara Moore is returning to Melbourne to shoot a movie after success in The Unusual Suspects. Wo r d s

A

JA N E R O C CA

ustralian actress Michelle Vergara Moore left her home in Williamsburg, New York, last August to film SBS’s satirical-heist series The Unusual Suspects in Sydney, but it’s a new US film being shot in her birthplace of Melbourne that now has her excited. “We’ve lived in New York for 10 years, so to have the opportunity to film in Melbourne is the best thing that’s happening to me right now. The last time I filmed there was in 201314 for The Time of Our Lives,” says Vergara Moore, who is married to Australian actor Toby Leonard Moore. She’s tight-lipped about the new film, biding her time in Hobart doing pub trivia nights, but she’ll be ready to mingle with her large, tight-knit Filipino family when she lands. When Vergara Moore read the script for The Unusual Suspects, she was instantly drawn to its ambitious tone. Much more than social satire dressed in a heist, the series hit a cultural nerve too. “It was the first time I’ve ever read an Australian script that had a major representation of Filipino characters in it,” says the actor, who has also appeared in the movies Side Effects and Black & White & Sex. “When I was growing up, I never saw these characters on TV.” Vergara Moore is one of 10 children born to parents who migrated from the Philippines to Melbourne in the early ’70s, choosing to settle in the Gippsland town of Sale. Both of her parents worked as teachers, arriving with four children, and then having a further six. “I can’t imagine what it must have been like to leave a small village and

relocate,” she says. “My dad worked his butt off for the family. “We’re very close and I do miss not seeing them more. In fact, all of my siblings live in the same area as my parents except for one who lives in West Footscray. We’re that close!” By the time Vergara Moore was born the family had settled in Sunbury. She fell in love with acting while at school in North Melbourne. “I went to St Aloysius from year 7 to 9 and it’s there I started getting involved in performing arts,” she says. “It was a single-sex multicultural school – everyone from Vietnamese, Greek, Filipinos went there, so diverse. “I played various male and female roles and really loved it. My parents didn’t have any idea how to get me into acting, though, they didn’t know how to get an agent, but they have been very supportive of my career choice. I got into NIDA and have been determined ever since.” Vergara Moore met her husband Toby in their first year at NIDA and they’ve been together ever since. In a career first for them both, they act as on-screen husband and wife in The Unusual Suspects. “It was very peculiar, at first, to see Toby at work … It’s really jarring,” she says. “Usually, you’re at home rehearsing lines with each other, but to have my spouse at work and act as a couple on the screen, I was constantly adjusting. But it was good to have a glass of wine at the end of the day and talk about what happened at work.” ● THE UNUSUAL SUSPECTS \ SBS On Demand ● sbs.com.au/ondemand

Ph o t o

JA M E S G E E R

Pulling on the CEO’s bib COVER STORY Kelly Ryan is bringing 15 years of sports

industry experience to the top job at Netball Australia.

W

hen Kelly Ryan tried to explain to her six-year-old daughter, Macy, that she had a new job running netball, it prompted an unexpected response. “Macy was like, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re coming to coach my netball team!’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, not quite,’’’ Netball Australia’s new CEO says with a laugh. “The girls have got no idea whatsoever. Which is super sweet.’’ If Ryan is content to leave the wrangling of juniors to those running the entry-level NetSetGO program at outer suburban Diamond Creek, she has no intention of being a loud or pushy sideline parent watching Macy – and, next year, four-year-old Indie – start out in the sport the former AFL marketing executive has this month started to oversee. Having grown up in the tiny farming town of Strathmerton, near Cobram on the NSW border, and played for the local football-netball club and school teams, Ryan’s new role spans everything from grassroots, where netball remains the nation’s most popular female participant sport, to Super Netball and the national team, the Diamonds. Despite the recent embrace of women and girls by traditionally male-focused sporting codes, netball retains an important and influential place in the Australian community. “It really, really does, and that’s not lost on me,’’ says Ryan. “It’s an enormous responsibility to make sure it continues being such a beacon, and I only hope that I can do it justice.’’ At 42, Ryan’s first CEO position is the culmination of 15 years in the sports industry that have included senior marketing and events roles with the Western Bulldogs and embryonic Gold Coast Suns and two stints at AFL House – including most recently as head of major events and operations at the league-owned Docklands Stadium. But media was her first love, and phase one of Ryan’s career typified both her can-do attitude and

8

DOM A IN REV IEW

enterprising approach. While studying at RMIT in the 1990s, Ryan wrote a letter to the boss of radio station Fox FM offering to work for nothing, which meant rising at 4am to help with outside broadcasts. Yes, gratis. “I did my time like a lot of people do, I think, where you’re just prepared to get a foot in the door and do anything.’’ That would soon lead to paid jobs in the promotions departments of Gold FM and Nova before Ryan returned from a year in Sydney in need of a change but unsure exactly where to move next. What she was clear about was her other passion: sport. So why not try AFL? “I was living in Footscray at the time [2004], so I thought, ‘I’m going to try to get a job at the Western Bulldogs.’ I rang them about 50 times asking for an interview, and finally, the HR manager caved and decided to meet with me out of sympathy ... and probably because I was annoying the hell out of him!’’ After being told initially that there were no vacancies, two jobs had somehow opened up by the time she walked back to her car. “That’s how I started in footy. I just tried to take on new opportunities from there on in, and I’ve had a fantastic time over the past 15 years to bring me to this point.’’ Netball HQ in hipster-central Fitzroy is a long way from Strathmerton, where Ryan’s dad was a farmer-turned-truckie and her mum a nurse. There has been much to learn from each stop en route. During her first stint at the Western Bulldogs, where the office staff worked in a run-down converted bar, Ryan had to be thrifty and creative. Her five-plus years at the Suns involved the challenge of selling a football code as well as a club, necessitating a more entertainment-focused approach to a match-day experience that had little to do with on-field results.

Back at Whitten Oval as chief marketing officer, having been drawn back to family in her home state, Ryan was 36 weeks pregnant with her and partner Samm’s second child on the day the Bulldogs famously broke a 62-year premiership drought in 2016. She returned four weeks after Indie’s birth to direct the newly established AFLW franchise. The 2019 move to Docklands Stadium brought experience in sports beyond AFL, encompassing core tenants cricket and soccer, concerts and other major events. Throughout, Ryan has been wedded to the philosophy of not blindly following what has always gone before and prides herself on rarely doing the same thing twice. It might be as simple as acknowledging that not everyone wants a pie and chips at the footy. Or introducing a sensory room to cater for those with special needs.

A

t Netball Australia, she has the sturdy platform of those huge participant numbers on which to build a higher profile for the pointy end, but also a determination to stem the loss of so many girls in their mid-teens from competitive sport, generally. With the football codes, cricket, soccer, et al., there has never been more competition for elite female athletes, but what matters most to Ryan is that they simply stay active and involved. “Netball’s been there from the beginning for women and girls, which I think is an incredibly strong position that we just need to continue building upon,’’ she says. “It’s also a great elite sport now, and the fact that we can pay the players more than any of the other national codes is fantastic, but there’s still a great opportunity for growth in everything we do.’’ That includes the broadcast audience for a national league that next year will return to Fox Sports from Nine/GEM and, when COVID-19 allows, crowds. “Ultimately, it all feeds each other, so the more people we’ve got watching, the more money we can make commercially from broadcast deals, which then we can continue to reinvest in people playing and participating at some level.’’ Diversity and inclusion will be key themes. Ryan is keen to innovate and evolve as she continues netball’s grand tradition of being an exception to the boys’ club of Australian sports administration. One thing she is still not, of course, is a NetSetGO coach. But as young Macy will surely appreciate one day, CEO will do nicely as mum’s netball job for now.  ●

ith his world turned upside down, like so many in Melbourne over the past 18 months, Charlie Carrington was forced to hustle. “I’d just gotten back from India doing some sightseeing – I think I got back two days before the first lockdown – and it was getting very ugly,” says Carrington, the owner of South Yarra restaurant Atlas Dining. “There was a lot of uncertainty because, obviously, with the restaurant we were very focused on bookings,” he says. “We were just getting cancellations like we’ve never seen before and it was like, ‘What are we going to do now?’” The 27-year-old and his team had

built Atlas Dining, with its everchanging menu themed around a different country every few months, to be one of Melbourne’s best in just four years. In search of what to do given the hospitality restrictions, he created the Atlas Masterclass concept after a suggestion by his girlfriend. The concept is pretty simple but genius at the same time. Atlas Masterclass delivers ingredients and recipes with a world theme straight to your home and gives you access to video cooking tutorials that Carrington delivers.

The themes have included Japan, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Greece, Peru and the United States, and are affordable. “When my girlfriend had the idea I thought about it, and thought it wasn’t really me,” Carrington says. “But the next day, which was the first day of lockdown, I thought, ‘Well, we don’t really have anything else to do, so why not?’ “We did an Instagram post asking if anyone would be interested in the concept [and] to email us – and we probably had about 50 or 60 emails in an hour. “It was then I thought we really could be on to something.” Atlas Masterclass took off like no one expected, potentially creating a business model for hospitality outlets and restaurants suffering tough times like a pandemic lockdown. Carrington and his team have

now delivered more than 500,000 meal kits across Victoria, NSW and the ACT, feeding and keeping happy customers entertained. Atlas Masterclass has also become a huge employer, with staff growing from nine to a high point of 65. It has also supported vulnerable international students or workers severely impacted by the lockdown. “With the restaurant, most of our staff I think, except for one or two, were from overseas,” Carrington says. “We obviously wanted to keep our whole team, as none of them were eligible for any incentives. “We thought. ‘Let’s push it and see what we can do’, and we were not only able to keep all of our staff but grow.”  ● ● atlasmasterclass.com.au

any would be overwhelmed by Old Beijing's colossal menu. Not me; I have a method. I select what jumps out – gauging the waiter's facial expression as I go – and then subtract dishes until his face returns to normal. “You can always order more,” he says as if this were my first rodeo. It would be rude not to order Peking duck here. Our table of chefs and MasterChefs approve of its brittle skin and supple flesh, perhaps because master Chen Xu has cooked nearly half a million roast ducks over 30 years. Xiaolongbao are Old Beijing's other signature dish, with five varieties including jet-black truffled soup dumplings and a

red seafood version, with each dumpling presented on an individual wooden stand with handle. The regional diversity of the chefs is clear from the spread of ornately presented dishes: Shanghai scrambled egg whites are fluffed up with crab meat, saucy Cantonese XO pipis are best with youtiao Chinese “churros” for dipping, and soft poached chicken with Sichuan chilli crisp over thin noodles packs the perfect amount of heat. Housed in QV in the former home of Red Spice Road, Old Beijing is also a solid lunch option, with noodles, rice dishes and a dozen dumplings priced between $13.80 and $17. This 200-seat restaurant with six private dining rooms now has a dumpling-making viewing window, hand-painted paifang-like structures over the tables and a licensed bar (try a Sichuan sour made with Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz Gin). We skip the walk-in wine cellar for now and order a bottle of Geelong By Farr Chardonnay from the long list. “Actually,” I pipe up as the waiter turns on his heels, “we'll get some more dumplings too, please.” ●

What’s nearby? Right next door is Thai Town, one of my favourite Thai restaurants in Melbourne. The playful fit-out is inspired by bustling night markets and lunch is a steal (traditional salads, curries, stir-fries, noodles and soups all under $15). Dinner is a trip around Thailand without the airfare.

A Monash University survey revealed the majority of us didn’t meet suggested physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines last year. To get you out of your sweats and into your finest workout gear, here are some of Melbourne’s best workouts to help you take advantage of your desire to get moving.

1R AUSTRALIA \ Recently opening its first boutique club in South Yarra, 1R will soon become your new favourite — specifically designed for those looking for a high-intensity workout with a point of difference. Founded in 2015 in London, James Balfour (son of Fitness First founder Mike Balfour) shook up the tired and dated gym model. 1R has three training concept methods: reshape, rumble and reformer. Its studio, designed by Australian architects Foolscap Studios, is far from average. Each class runs for 45 minutes. “From the moment you walk into the club, you will become immersed in an experience,” says Amanda Maclean, 1R CEO. “Australians will soon discover an entirely new, intense and addictive way of working out.”

REVL \ Launched last year, REVL is a new-wave Australian gym brand founded by former Hawthorn champion Josh Gibson, who has developed fitness programs centred on holistic performance. REVL aims to make gym workouts accessible and diverse for anyone curious about and committed to their fitness. Programs are grouped into 12-week blocks and divided into four-week phases, each with its own focus of power, strength, metabolic conditioning and endurance. “[Last year] was a really tough time for many of us, and maintaining positive mental and physical health was a challenge that most of us are still facing,” says Gibson. “I launched REVL studios to bridge the gap between circuit-based group training and complex high-skill programs. The classes feature tailored strength and conditioning group fitness programs developed for those looking to focus on their personal fitness goals while having fun.”

STREETS OF OUR TOWN

Bridport Street Albert Park is charming and elegant – and so is its main shopping strip.

Surrounded by lush parks, an abundance of cafes and retail, and only a short tram ride from the South Melbourne Market or the beach, Bridport Street in Albert Park is totally charming. The suburb's main park and namesake, the sprawling Albert Park, is reason enough to head to this part of the world, but the retail here truly is something else. Alongside well-known chains like Gorman and Seed, this strip boasts elegant independent boutiques teeming with unique garments from Australia and all over the world. The suburb hosts some of Melbourne's most gorgeous Edwardian and Victorian terrace houses, its streets wide and tree-lined. Just around the corner is the heritage-listed St Vincent Gardens, too. The area is home to lots of young families, and on a weekday morning, you'll see mums pushing prams and balancing coffees. Older couples walking big dogs stand chatting outside cafes on their morning walks. I think I can smell the bay, but it might just be knowing that it is close that makes my mid-week meander salt-washed and dreamy.

Right next door is Albert and Victoria, an enchanting independent store where the owner, Melissa Langford, designs (and makes!) the clothing with the help of a few employees. Florals and knits feature heavily, its pink walls and puffy sleeves like a boho Marie Antoinette movie set. “I didn't study [making clothes]. I learnt at my grandmother's knee,” Langford says. “I like the idea of strip shopping; I liked being away from all of the big obvious stores. It's a lovely opportunity for small boutiques, and this is much more a discovery thing."

Under construction, above Camberwell’s vibrant village on the corner of Victoria and Burke roads, Victoria & Burke is the epitome of luxury upscaling. In a modern take on Camberwell’s Victorian-era Italianate mansions, acclaimed architects Carr have combined long lines and elegant masonry with stucco and metal detailing to create the development’s sophisticated facade. Most of the project’s 15 residences offer threebedroom layouts that feature sumptuous main suites, sculleries and separate laundries. At ground level, expansive outdoor courtyards enlarge five house-sized residences that have garden access from all living spaces and bedrooms. Studley Park’s towering eucalypts have a way of secluding the lucky few who actually live among them – and that includes the residents of this tiny cul-de-sac right on the Yarra. It was here in the 1990s that architect Nicholas Day conceived a house that would bring the elegance of executive living to a site that embraced the rugged wilderness. Hence, this three-storey abode, built of creamy Mount Gambier sandstone on an elevated allotment with a river view. At its rear is a cascading garden, with six timber terraces and a patio above a terrace worthy of a Tuscan villa. This house deserves a lively teenage family – like the kids who’ve grown up here during the present owners’ 23-year tenure. Close to private schools and with easy access to Studley Park, Kew Junction and the city, there’s heaps of scope for free-ranging adventures. The design is zoned for good times at all ages. Along with formal living and dining rooms, there’s a first-floor retreat and a terrace overlooking the Yarra – just right for languid afternoons of binge-watching and sky-gazing. The house is artfully angled toward the north-east, yet makes the most of the westerly river outlook. At the front is the parquet living room, handsome in silk taffeta curtains with a Rinnai gas log fireplace. The adjacent dining room has french doors to the north-facing, colonnaded terrace. The kitchen is spectacular in black marble with gold and white streaks. Appliances include two Gaggenau ovens and a gas-induction cooktop. The adjacent laundry – also in black marble – has an office nook.

Upstairs, a carpeted retreat leads to two double bedrooms with wardrobes. The skylit marble main bathroom has a bath and shower. Bedroom three has a desk. The main bedroom has a dressing room and a marble twin en suite with a shower. The basement is dominated by the triple garage, but there is potential to include a home theatre and wine store. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au Agent: Jellis Craig, Lloyd Lawton 0403 229 433 Price: $3.5 million-$3.75 million Auction: 11am, July 31
