What I’ve learnt about the human spirit since COVID-19 hit is that people are resilient and resourceful, and when we stop to consider what is important, most people come back to family. For actress Georgina Haig, who returned to Australia last year to film Back to the Rafters, nothing could be truer. The LA-based actress, who grew up on the Mornington Peninsula, is back living there with her mum, husband and daughter. “It was important we were close to family; that’s what mattered to us,” she tells Jane Rocca in this week’s cover story. ●

FASHION Godwin Hili is designing again thanks to a lesson in resilience. Wo r d s
LU K E D E N N E H Y
I
t was in September 2017 that Melbourne fashion designer Godwin Hili’s world came crashing down. In the years before, Hili had built up his fashion label Godwin Charli to six stores, including a flagship location in Chadstone’s high-end fashion district that opened to much fanfare in June 2016. Godwin Charli also had an impressive celebrity clientele that included Liam Hemsworth, Sir Richard Branson, Todd Woodbridge, Ash Barty and Megan Gale. He also supplied high-profile sporting teams, including the Carlton, Essendon, and Geelong football clubs and the Australian Davis Cup tennis team, with his signature suits. But despite his clientele and his reputation, the reality of running a medium-sized fashion business, the expenses, the pressure, the commitments all became too much.
Returning in style
“It’s been great for me to reconnect and just design
“It got to the point we just couldn’t make commercial sense of the business; the overheads became just too big for our little private bank accounts,” he says. Growing up in Melbourne’s western suburbs, Hili, 40, had followed his dream and made it. So, to walk away was incredibly difficult and it took a heavy toll on his mental health. “I think I hit absolute rock bottom with my mental health,” Hili says of the time. “Confronting your greatest fears and not being able to think for yourself and operate in a manner that is normal was so hard. “Turning up to work every day to make normal decisions [was something] I was unable to do.” Hili says the fashion industry is incredibly tough and there are many designers who start their own labels, build up quickly, then go through a similar experience to his. After a couple of years off, Hili has launched a made-to-measure studio in Flinders Lane in the city, which he calls his atelier but is still under the name Godwin Charli. Clients, both men and

women, come in and see him for smart casual outfits, suits, or red carpet dresses. He says the atelier has made him discover the love of fashion designing again. “It’s been great for me to reconnect and just design clothes again.” Once married to the craft, Hili now spends more time at home and says family has become extra important – he and his fiancee, Laura, welcomed their son Elijah York in May. Hili hopes he can one day pass on the lessons in resilience he has learnt over the past few years to his son.
He says it is that resilience that has held him in good stead during the ongoing COVID-19 lockdowns, which have plagued small businesses over the past 18 months. He believes when restrictions ease, the appetite for beautiful clothing will be immense. “I feel people want to go out and get dressed up again. We are all ready,” he says. ● GODWIN CHARLI \ Level 2/165 Flinders Lane, Melbourne

Back to the Rafters star Georgina Haig has swapped LA for Melbourne – for now.
W
hen LA-based actress Georgina Haig took on the replacement role for Jessica Marais’ character Rachel Rafter in the reboot series Back to the Rafters, she never thought she’d be moving back in with her mother on the Mornington Peninsula. The 35-year-old actress, who grew up in Red Hill, together with her husband, screenwriter Josh Mapleston, and their four-year-old daughter Greta, relocated to the peninsula while filming the series last year. “We’ve been living in LA for five years, so that’s definitely home, but here we are,” Haig says. “The plan was to come to Australia to film the series in Sydney and then head back, but now we’ve moved in with my mum in Dromana. It’s where we’ve been based until the foreseeable future. “Going back to LA was a bit of a risk; I couldn’t be sure I’d be able to get back in,” she adds. “It was important we were close to family; that’s what mattered to us.”

Haig is the first to admit she was a little nervous about taking on the role that Marais famously made her own. She hadn’t binged the series prior to her audition either, but brings her own synergy to the popular family drama. “The cast made me feel really comfortable,” says Haig, who emailed each of the cast prior to meeting them on set to share the highs and lows their characters share in the series. “Rebecca Gibney and Eric Thomson were so welcoming; they really took me under their wing. I was coming in as a new cast member trying to play catch-up with a cast who has played solidly together for six seasons. “You go into playing these intimate relationships that are so layered and have so much history; it was a relief everyone was so open with me being there.” For now, life on the Mornington Peninsula is ticking all the boxes – sure, there have been on and off lockdowns to endure, but she’s indulging in her love of the garden and finding time to do plenty of crafting (she’s big on crochet). She has even managed an overseas trip for three weeks – to film for a new Netflix series in Pittsburgh called Archive 81, but had to leave her husband and daughter behind. “Yes, I had to do my two-week quarantine, it hasn’t been easy, but it is what it is,” Haig says. “I’m lucky my husband totally understands our industry and the demands of it. The thing with acting is you’re busy for a period of time and then have lots of downtime. When I am home, I get to be really present with our daughter, and when I am working, I explain to her it’s for this amount of time, and we can FaceTime.” Haig wrote Greta a letter a day for the duration of her absence, and the four-year-old would fetch one from the letterbox each day she was gone. “Josh would put the letters in the letterbox, and she’d ring me during my hair and make-up time, and we’d catch up then. I have a really supportive

“… it’s just great to be reading scripts where women are more flawed because that’s what is real – that is what is resonating with me.” husband who is hands-on with Greta. We both do whatever we can to support each other creatively as parents. Mum also helps us a lot,” she says. “We travel a lot as a family when we can. Sometimes we get a nanny when we’re on location; other times, we find a great kindy. “You do what works.” The last time Haig was in Melbourne was to film Secret Bridesmaid’s Business in 2019 – with parts of the series filmed on the Mornington Peninsula. “This area is so sentimental to me for many reasons. It takes me back to my childhood,” says Haig, who played winemaker Olivia in the suspense television drama. She graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2008 and has appeared in multiple Australian TV series and films, including Underbelly, The Sapphires and as Paula Yates in the miniseries INXS: Never Tear Us Apart. A role in a US TV series Fringe in 2012 opened up plenty of doors. Since then, she’s been cast as a police officer in the CBS legal drama Reckless, followed by Limitless in 2015, and as Elsa in ABC’s Once Upon a Time – perhaps her most recognised role yet. She was also in Vancouver recently to film TNT’s dystopian thriller Snowpiercer. Haig’s father is the film director-producer Russell Hagg, and her mother is artist Gillian Haig. The couple separated when she was a teenager. Her dad, who now lives in McCrae, is best known for working with Stanley Kubrick on A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange while based in London before his daughter was born. In Australia, he worked on BMX Bandits, Water Rats, Chances and Blue Heelers, to name a few.
“I always knew dad worked in TV and was always proud to see what he had accomplished,” Haig says. “We watched BMX Bandits as kids and watched the other movies he worked on as we got older. I think I was way too young when I first saw A Clockwork Orange, but I thought it was amazing. “The thing is, when you grow up with a writer, they’re always talking about stories, and my dad was always analysing films and scripts. He would take me to the theatre, and we’d always talk about it long after it finished. It definitely got me interested in the world of film for sure, and the fact we had a lot of family friends in the industry normalised it for me,” she says. It was a National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) summer course at the age of 17 – recommended by Aussie actress Bridie Carter from McLeod’s Daughters – that sealed Haig’s fate. “I did think about being a foreign diplomat for a while but loved to act and dance as a young girl. The idea of travelling for work appealed to me, so I came back to acting,” she says. For all the TV scripts and auditions that come her way, Haig would love to get into theatre. “I would love to get to do a Shakespeare play one day,” she says. “I trained in classical theatre and haven’t been able to do much in that space. “But I think my ultimate role would be anything set in the 1970s because I love the clothes so much. For now, as an actress, it’s just great to be reading scripts where women are more flawed because that’s what is real – that is what is resonating with me.” ● BACK TO THE RAFTERS \ Premieres September 17, Amazon Prime Video ● primevideo.com

Fresh air, fab fare
T
he highlights of a day in lockdown are undoubtedly eating and time spent outdoors – sometimes simultaneously. For a dose of vitamin D in “locky-D”, we’ve matched five of Melbourne’s best neighbourhood walking trails and gardens with nearby spots to pick up food and coffee.
COMO GARDENS TO THE TAN \
The Stables of Como remains open, tucked away inside the grounds of historic Como House. Start your walk here with coffee, cake and sandwiches, or make it your final stop and take home grazing boxes and pizza. It’s just over a couple of kilometres along the river to the
“bottom of the hill” (the corner of Alexandra Avenue and Anderson Street) at the Royal Botanic Gardens. At the top, you’re spoilt for choice. Order a second coffee from the Botanical Hotel or preorder via their extensive online shop. We especially love the lockdown bundles that feature meals for two with a bottle of wine.
AMY WHITFIELD
Where to stroll and snack during lockdown.
YARRA LOOP \
There’s a lovely walk that takes about an hour from the Dight Falls car park over Merri Creek and along the Dight Falls Loop Trail to Studley Park Boathouse. Then walk to Studley Park Road and down to The Farm Cafe or Abbotsford Convent. Once
you’ve had your fill of coffee and baked goods, it’s only a 15-minute walk back along Main Yarra Trail. Time it with a farmers market at the Collingwood Children’s Farm on the second Saturday of the month or at the Abbotsford Convent on the fourth Saturday of the month.

CARLTON GARDENS LAPS \
DAREBIN PARKLANDS \
It’s a picturesque, seaside stroll or cycle along the Bay Trail which hugs Port Phillip Bay. From Mornington in the south through to Port Melbourne in the north, there’s plenty to snack upon along the way. Pick up two-person packs from the iconic Donovans in St Kilda for $145, as well as their famous bombe Alaska. Elwood Bathers has fresh pastries and coffee available to take away from 9am Friday through Sunday during lockdown, with specials such as a margherita and a margarita for $25 (see what they did there?). In Albert Park, Pipis Kiosk is our pick for fish and chips and cocktails on the fly.
Pre-order a Sunday roast for pick-up between noon and 3pm at Epocha and put some normal back into your weekend. The terrace restaurant is perfectly positioned across from Carlton Gardens, so you can ask for mulled wine in your coffee cup and toast those queuing for their vaccination at the Exhibition Centre. Keep an eye on Epocha’s Instagram (@EpochaHope) for last-minute specials like freshly shucked oysters and take-home packs for two. If you’re looking for something else on the go, head down Gertrude Street to Morning Market for coffee, fresh pastries, sandwiches, produce and spirit-lifting blooms.
The Darebin Creek Trail runs from Preston down to Alphington, but within Darebin Parklands are wetlands, creeks, a lake, footbridge, stepping-stones and even a spiritual healing trail. You might even spot native wildlife, such as echidnas and flying foxes. The Alphington Farmers Market is just 300 metres away. It runs on Thursday afternoons and on Sunday from 9am to 1pm. Time it to pick up a pre-ordered Sunday roast from nearby Alphington Social (alphingtonsocial.com.au), or an $80 feed-me pack for two with a cheese platter, arancini, pizza, salad and tiramisu. Add a bottle of wine for less than $30. ●

FEATURE HOUSE PRAHRAN \ 408/220 COMMERCIAL ROAD 3

When Charles Moore arrived in Melbourne from Ireland in 1881, he had two shillings and sixpence to his name. By 1903 he owned what became Australia’s biggest suburban department store – Read’s, founded by draper Jacob Read on the Chapel Street corner of Commercial Road. Poor Mr Moore lived only one more year after seeing the lavish new Read’s store rise on this corner in 1915. But he’d be chuffed to know it’s still the handsomest landmark in Chapel Street. Renamed Pran Central in 1999, its twin domes crown an opulent complex of ground-floor eateries and upper-floor residences, including this two-level apartment that has a magnificent view north and east. Composed to an award-winning design by SJB Architects, the apartment has lower-level living with double-height windows and ceiling, and a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. On the first floor are two double bedrooms and a bathroom-laundry. The larger bedroom is mezzanine-style and looks out over the living area below. The current owners, here for a decade, have transformed their home from a basic loft to something gloriously idiosyncratic. Wallpapers by Cole & Son of London (by appointment to the Queen) and cream silk taffeta curtains grace these Edwardian walls and windows to create a haven high above the busy market precinct. The living area, tucked against the curvy outer wall, gets a fascinating view along Chapel Street and east across the rooftops. The Poliform kitchen has an island and integrated German appliances. The star turn in this exceptionally pretty Victorian cottage is the conservatory section of the living area. Extending out into the courtyard in a fan of light and style, it brings cloudscapes, treetops and sunshine into the house. The facade of the house is enhanced by a picket fence and intricate lace trim on the verandah. Two bedrooms open off the arched hallway with its picture rails and ornate corbels. Each bedroom has a timber fireplace with a castiron insert and the second bedroom has doors to the light well. The house takes advantage of all that is good about Albert Park. DISCRIMINATION IN ADVERTISING IS UNLAWFUL
The Victorian Equal Opportunity Act 1995 makes it unlawful for an advertiser to show any intention to discriminate on the basis of sex, pregnancy, race, age, marital status, political or religious belief or physical features, disability, lawful sexual activity/sexual orientation, HIV/AIDS status or on the basis of being associated with a person with one of the above characteristics, unless covered by an exception under the Act. As Network Classifieds could be legally liable if an unlawful advertisement is printed, Network Classifieds will not accept advertisements that appear to break the law.
