Pub giant Australian Venue Co. has taken over the lease of the Sarah Sands

Classic comeback as a modern bistro serving time-honoured dishes.

A

t the iconic 167-year-old Sarah Sands Hotel in Brunswick, a classic counter meal is still on the agenda, although its rock’n’roll past has been replaced by a chic $3-million renovation. “I was a child of the ’90s and when I moved to Melbourne from Swan Hill, everybody knew and loved the Sarah Sands Hotel; it’s where you went in Brunswick,” recalls Paul Waterson, chief executive of The Australian Venue Co, the company behind the respectful revamp. “It’s one of those venues that has been able to evolve through the time. For us, it’s about bringing its iconic past back. It’s on the border of bohemian Brunswick, the edge of Parkville where the university and hospital crowd meet.” The Sarah Sands was originally a

passenger ship built in the British port of Liverpool and named after the mayor’s wife. She sailed between Britain, the United States and Panama, arriving in Melbourne during the 1850s gold-mining boom. On board was the original licensee of the hotel, Robert Barry, who opened the pub in 1854. From its 1950s six o’clock swill to a strip club in the ’80s and later a Bridie O’Reilly’s Irish pub, the venue was way ahead of its time. It no doubt helped Melbourne earn its live music capital of Australia stripes thanks to Rob and Isabella Phillips, who ran it from 1989 to 1993. This is where The Cure’s Robert Smith played pool over two nights, where Suzi Quatro stuck around and American punks L7 stole the show during the grunge

era’s domination. Nick Cave also roamed the sticky carpet. Many local Melbourne acts got their early career starts here too, including God, Tiddas, Archie Roach, Cosmic Psychos and The Mavis’s. “We put on genres of bands other venues didn’t want to put on at the time,” Isabella Phillips says. “We had indie, punk, metal, rockabilly, folk and early techno nights. My husband reserved the third floor for punk bands so they also had somewhere to play too.” The couple based the venue’s formula on St Kilda’s Crystal Ballroom, where they met in 1979.

G R A Z I N G PL AT E

“We were proud that the Sarah Sands was a safe place where people could see bands and feel at home no matter what they wore and liked,” Isabella says. These days, the ghosts of the pub’s past might linger, but all that remains is the original brickwork, steel beams and fabulous staircase. Architects Studio Y turned this iconic pub into a modern bistro, where a dining room, two function rooms and a public bar are filled with brass detail and timber panels. Executive chef Telina Menzies says of the kitchen’s offering: “The way we have defined the food is to be a heavy pub-classic meal location where there’s decent vegetarian options.” Steak and ale pies with braised Victorian beef, a classic chicken parmigiana and an eggplant version plus pizza and a weekly meat raffle [that’s really a fruit and veg box] are also dished up.  ● KIM JANE

COVER STORY Actor Rachel Griffiths says her role as

a prime minister in Total Control is a career highlight.

“It’s been a total obsession”

O

scar nominated and Golden Globe awardwinning actor Rachel Griffiths is at her professional peak. She is returning to screens in the second season of the ABC TV political drama Total Control. “I feel this is the best work I have ever done in my career,” Griffiths says of her portrayal of Prime Minister Rachel Anderson. “My feet were so in this role, and it’s been a total obsession.” Griffiths joins co-star Deborah Mailman as they navigate the nasty world of politics all in the name of ambition. “Every season needs to bring out more levels of a character’s development; you never want to arrest the development of your lead – so I’ve kept working on mine,” Griffiths says. The Melbourne actress spoke to various women in politics to help shape her character – a mixture of those at state and federal levels from both major parties and independent senators too.

6

DOM A IN REV IEW

Wo r d s

“Our characters are developed from all those conversations and then painted in the air with a bit of this and that,” Griffiths says. She also spent a lot of time reading biographies written by former journalists and rubbed shoulders with various chiefs-of-staff, both current and former, to help her gauge the climate in Canberra. Griffiths, who lives in Melbourne with her artist husband Andrew Taylor and their children, says the appetite for Total Control is a sign audiences are fascinated by politics and the conversations it spurs. “I think people are really engaged in politics like never before,” she says. “We’ve seen over the past two years what leadership looks like in this country. We want competent government and have had a taste of both good and bad – federally and at the state level. “I think that’s why Total Control has really appealed. Viewers want to see Indigenous equality in regards to incarceration and health outcomes. “Our central character (Deb Mailman as Alex) is trying to make a difference. She has a teenage son. She is going back and forth to Canberra and had to put up with all the s--- in Parliament – it’s enough to break you. “Women are fed up with having to deal with toxicity, which makes them sick, the sexism and unequal pay.” The first season ends with a 30year political career over for Griffiths’ character, but it’s just the beginning in many ways. “It’s a fantastic place to start, you are coming from a new place and nobody knows where it’s heading,” she says.

Rachel Griffiths has been able to work and have family time during the pandemic.

uring the past 18 months of the pandemic, Griffiths has counted her blessings, given that she’s been able to work, but she too has been stuck in Melbourne and enjoyed being closer to her family. Her son just sat his year 12 exams and she was around for it. “I’m like what they call a geriatric mother; going from flower to flower. I’m a bit like a butterfly. But it was good to be here and I couldn’t imagine not,” she says. Griffiths says her husband created his most successful artworks in 20 years, with a sell-out show at Tim Olsen Gallery in Sydney a few months ago. “I certainly think not being so hectic as a family helped us a lot. Andrew didn’t have to spend every weekend driving to basketball matches and footy games. It gave him more studio time and that worked in his favour. When I’m away for work he does absolutely everything. This really was his time,” she says, proudly. Griffiths managed to get to Adelaide to film the comedy Aftertaste and hosted the ABC’s Finding the Archibald, but it was her Amazon Prime show The Wilds, which could have been booted overseas for filming, that really got her heart racing. “I finished filming The Wilds in August and it was a miracle it stayed in Australia,” she says. “I was terrified the show would be taken overseas and I’d be away for seven months without my family. “I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to be able to film a big American show on the Gold Coast with $100 million production that meant hundreds of jobs – that was a real positive. Crew that hadn’t been able to work, suddenly could. I felt so aware of every job being created.”

While at home, Griffiths learnt how to play the violin again. She had a head start as a child, but reacquainted herself with the instrument in her downtime. “I drove my family mad,” she laughs. She also took to the garden to let off steam. “This lockdown I have been gardening a lot more,” she says. “Suddenly, I wasn’t travelling, so I was around Mum a lot more and that was really wonderful too as she had plenty to share about gardening tips.” When asked how the pandemic changed her, Griffiths admits she’s still processing the mental load of multiple lockdowns. “As a child, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother,” she says. “She was my youngest daughter’s age during the flu pandemic in 1919 and often talked about the schools being closed. She never forgot that time in her life. It left a real mark on her – and that feeling of you don’t really know what will happen, it lingers. She always had a ‘we’ll see’ attitude. “My grandmother learnt you can’t be 100 per cent sure that what is predicted to happen will happen. She went through the Depression and World War II – that was the attitude of the time. As for me, I’m still figuring it out.” Earlier this year, Griffiths sat for a portrait with artist Natasha Bienick, who captured her at home for a 2021 Archibald Prize entry. “It’s a portrait of me trying to make sense of the world,” Griffiths says. “It’s me thinking ‘what the f--- is happening?’ – and trying to make sense of some big tectonic shifts in global thought and movement. “She captured what I do quite a bit – lying on the couch trying to make sense of the story.”  ● TOTAL CONTROL, SEASON 2 \ Sundays, 8.40pm, ABC TV or any time on ABC iview.

he opportunity to tell the stories of what it’s like to live on the breadline was a no-brainer for MasterChef winner Julie Goodwin, who left the comfort of home to live in emergency accommodation. Best known for winning the first season of the cooking show in 2009, the author and TV personality plates up a different reality as host of the SBS series Could You Survive on the Breadline? “There are people in this country struggling to survive; Australians going without necessities on a daily basis and living under so much financial stress with no opportunity to improve their lot because the day-to-day is so hard,” Goodwin says. She describes herself as a deeply empathetic and sensitive person, but it took walking in the shoes of those less fortunate to gain a deeper understanding of the problems they face. “To walk into the homes of these people was so real and confronting. It was much harder than you can ever imagine,” Goodwin says. Filming the series made her feel helpless. “Seeing families get their kids ready for school in a motel room as their emergency accommodation was hard to take in,” Goodwin says. “This is Australia, for god’s sake. It shouldn’t be happening. To have them on the phone to charities to make sure they can get food on the table. I don’t think people truly realise what hardships there are out there.” The three-part documentary also follows other Australians, such as NSW Greens MP Jenny Leong and journalist Caleb Bond, going on their own immersive journey. Winning MasterChef opened plenty of media doors for Goodwin, who has enjoyed a career in the spotlight in the decade that followed. This included a morning radio show from which she suddenly departed due to a health issue. In the past few years, she’s opened up about the mental health struggles that plagued her for years without realising she was living with anxiety and depression. “Mental health is not just in your mind, it’s in your body as well,” Goodwin says. “My road to recovering requires a lot of attention. You’ll see me

and has relished the bonding experience. “Having a grandchild took me back to being a young mum and remembering what that was like. It’s been lovely having my son, daughter-in-law and grandchild living with us during lockdown,” she says. However, it’s also heightened the loss of her own grandmother, now that she’s become one. “Nan is still a massive part of my life and my kitchen. We have high teas at home and use her crockery all the time,” Goodwin says. “Her philosophy was to use the good china because every occasion is a special occasion.”  ● WOULD YOU SURVIVE ON THE BREADLINE? Premieres Wednesday, November 17, at 8.30pm on SBS and SBS On Demand.

STREETS OF OUR TOWN

Glen Huntly Road There is something for everyone along this lengthy stretch of bitumen in Elsternwick.

Head to Glen Huntly Road in Elsternwick for the op-shopping and stay for the bakeries, restaurants, homewares shops and historic architecture – this old Melbourne shopping strip has everything. Getting off at Elsternwick station, the first thing I’m greeted with is the iconic signage of the Classic Cinema. Older couples walk hand-in-hand and school kids with giant backpacks dart around them. There are adolescents in all-black and linen-adorned parents with prams. Just looking at the people here, it’s clear to see this strip is a drawcard for everybody. The street is often described as a slice of Europe in

WHAT WILL YOU FIND THERE?

My first stop is right next to the station, at One Square Espresso Bar. As its name suggests, it’s a tiny nook, full of warm lighting and great coffee. It sits wall-to-wall with the expansive Goat House. Further down the street, I discover the well-loved Vietnamese eatery Hanoi Hannah and the Nevsky Russian restaurant, not to mention lots of delightful bakeries, including the renowned Aviv Cakes and Bagels. I step into Umbrella Lounge Bar, an eccentric and vibrant eatery where colourful umbrellas hang from the ceiling. Serving Georgian cuisine for nine years, owner Temo Zorella tells me he is lucky to have found a home for his restaurant here. “Everybody has his own national restaurant or cafe [in Melbourne] and Georgia has never had [one], so I decided why not,” Zorella says. “Especially when it’s something you can be proud of.” There’s wonderful retail available, too, including clothing and homewares. I pop into Tsalta clothing store, drawn in by the bright and beautiful textures in its window.

that you may as well pop in for a movie.

Lisa is behind the counter and tells me she loves the strip because “it has a bit of everything”. “It’s got your old-timers, that’s rare, people who have been here for years and years … it’s like you’re in Europe,” Lisa says. There are so many op shops teeming with gems and store owners say it is one of the reasons people venture to Elsternwick from all over the city. I have a look at all of them and find myself at the gigantic Posh Opp Shoppe, which feels like a European flea market. It’s such good fun rifling through.  ●

HOUSE OF THE WEEK CAMBERWELL \ 10-12 TRAFALGAR ROAD 6

When Gordon Gooch moved into Chalgrove in 1889, his newly-built home gave him plenty to sing about. The music professor loved to climb up on the roof, where a lace-fenced “widow’s walk” offered fresh air to clear his pipes. Gooch directed concerts throughout Camberwell, Kew and Hawthorn but this terrace gave him a 360-degree outlook, from the Dandenongs to the bay. One of the most significant estates on Prospect Hill, Chalgrove is still a place for “a doyen of sophisticates” (as Professor Gooch was described by the local newspaper). With formal and casual living areas, a pool, a night-lit tennis court and luxuriant grounds, it has grand scope for family living and executive entertaining. Four bedrooms and a study in the main house are complemented by a separate stables residence. Best of all, the original details – arched leadlight windows, marble fireplaces and scrolled staircase – are enhanced by a renovation that makes Chalgrove look as if it simply grew organically to suit the 2020s. Chalgrove’s front bay has a sitting room lavishly papered in brocade. The main bedroom is cool in silver with a chandelier, fireplace, walk-in wardrobe and mosaic en suite. The contemporary open-plan area gleams in polished hardwood and has five pairs of french doors to the wraparound pergola above the pool. In the kitchen, the Lacanche range awaits duty amid glass-fronted cabinets and a calacatta marble island. There’s a walk-in pantry, a powder room and a laundry. Upstairs, the three bedrooms look restful in pale blue. All have en suites and wardrobes. There’s a study/sixth bedroom and large retreat with sash windows. Fitness buffs will appreciate Chalgrove’s juicy grounds, which with their lawn and pool zones and north-south tennis court feel more like a park than a garden. . At the rear are the former stables, still ruggedly handsome in brick floors and exposed beams. The ground-floor living room and kitchen-meals area plus the bedroom, bathroom and petite retreat above make a self-contained dwelling. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au
