Andy Lee started out on community broadcasting and even as one of Australia’s most recognisable – and funniest – people, there is a grassroots approach he has never lost, even if the audiences are bigger and the platforms are larger. He is known to be “good-natured and goofy”, and loves a yak with his fans, as Rachelle Unreich writes in this week’s cover profile on Lee. It makes Lee the ideal host of Nine’s The Hundred – everyday Aussies joining him to answer questions such as: have you ever dumped a partner by text? Do you believe in God? The responses will surprise. ●

t the so-called back of the Mornington Peninsula is a natural playground – a peaceful spot where country meets the sea. The area in and around Merricks, Merricks North and Red Hill is still a largely undisturbed part of the region, flecked with verdant paddocks, ripening vineyards and world-class restaurants where it is impossible to have a bad meal. Take your pick, anywhere, and be blown away. Here, in Merricks North, is Jackalope – one of Australia’s best hotels. This glamorous, 46-room bolthole, which opened in 2017, provides a six-star interlude between excursions to explore the provincial peninsula, away from the buzzing shopping strips of Sorrento and Blairgowrie. This district is the peninsula before it became a true outpost of Melbourne. For all the convenience offered by the metropolitanisation of its seaside villages, this is the place for foodies who don’t want to get wet. Unless it is in Jackalope’s pool on the lip of the vines, in a deep tub in a suite (including luxe “lairs” and terrace rooms), or via a splash of vino. Walking tracks and cellar doors in these parts replenish the soul, as much as a dunk in the ocean beaches and frolicking on the foreshore. A must-do walk follows an old railway line from Red Hill to Merricks – once a trade route for ferrying fresh apples to Melbourne via Hastings. Views take in Westernport to Phillip Island, with gentle ascents to gradually build an appetite. The Franklin Lookout, on Arthurs Seat Road, Arthurs Seat, is a pleasant drive from the hotel and has one of the most impressive views of the peninsula, capturing the full, glittering sweep of Port Phillip Bay.
recognised Doot Doot Doot (for experiential dining) and Rare Hare (a gastronomic cellar door). On this occasion we drove the handsome Lexus LS LS500h F Sport sedan – a hybrid vehicle with a capacious cabin and almost zero noise emission for this sort of touring – which glided along the peninsula’s twisting back roads as easily as the region’s pinot slips down the hatch. Doot Doot Doot’s executive chef is Simon Tarlington (ex-Paringa Estate), and a meal beneath the restaurant’s golden chandelier canopy is theatrical, but never stiff and sombre. Tarlington has crafted a customisable dinner menu ($125 a head), with a choice of entrees, mains and desserts, beside artful bites and sides. It’s an approach that extracts fun from the finery and serves up a best-of-the-best of his wizardry. ● The writer travelled courtesy of Jackalope and Lexus. ● jackalopehotels.com

COVER S TORY
ONE IN A MILLION Andy Lee is a uniquely candid celebrity who relishes a friendly connection to his audience and fans.
T
here are many people in the public eye who act famous – they avert their eyes when someone is looking at them and glide through a room with a “look at me but don’t speak to me” vibe. TV host-comedian-professional chatterbox Andy Lee, 40, is the opposite. He loves it when regular people approach him on the street. His Instagram account is peppered with ordinary guy moments, if that ordinary guy has the heart of a teenager – such as when he gave himself the pandemic challenge of hitting a tennis ball from one side of his house and catching it after racing through to the other. He is notoriously amiable and good-natured and goofy, and all of that makes him the perfect host for the show he co-created, The Hundred with Andy Lee, which is screening on Nine and 9Now (Nine is a majority owner of this masthead). The show’s premise is simple: A hundred everyday Australians join Lee via Zoom to answer questions such as: Have you ever dumped your partner by text? Do you believe in God? Have you never tried Vegemite? Three comedy panellists – upcoming

guests include Sophie Monk and frequent collaborator Hamish Blake – try to see who knows what the majority of Australians will say. It was an idea that stemmed out of the pandemic and its abundance of Zoom calls, but Lee says it’s very much “in my wheelhouse” anyway. “I’ve always loved dealing with everyday people; that’s been my favourite thing about the radio shows that Hamish and I did, as well as all our travel shows – [speaking to] people in their natural environment,” Lee says. “I always find them far more interesting than the celebrities. But what was interesting [with The Hundred] was that in a moment where we’re a bit divided on many different topics, it’s nice to prove how similar we are in so many ways when it comes to our habits in the shower or the last thing we do before we go to bed. I really love how inclusive it is and how fascinating it is because we live our lives in our own little houses, and you often think, ‘Surely everyone’s doing this this way,’ but maybe you’re the only one.” For example? “I thought most people slept nude, but I was wrong about that. Apparently, I’m in the
“If I’m not prepared to share myself, I can’t expect people to share back with me.” minority!” But in another way, the show helps audiences feel less alone, whether it’s about how many have had COVID or sleep in the same bed as their partners. (“I thought the amount of Australians who don’t was fascinating,” Lee says.) Part of Lee’s approachability comes from the fact that his audience spends their private moments with him, whether they’re watching him from their couch or listening to him on a long drive. Despite his popularity, his admirers act familiarly rather than fan-crazy. This is lucky, he says, because he doesn’t know how he would have coped otherwise. “I have been very lucky it was such a slow build. I can’t imagine what it’s like for overnight sensations, it would be a huge adjustment … it’s so different to [someone whose] poster is on people’s walls and there are screaming fans. “It was super gradual and also inside a radio station; I’m just trying to make Hamish laugh the entire time. People feel they know you, and I love that. I love it when people come up to me. Talking to other mates who are actors who are more reclusive and sometimes have social anxiety – it’s a much harder situation for them, because that’s not why they do their job. They just love acting. Where my job is chatting to people and I absolutely love it.” He has managed to deal with the other aspect of fame: having his personal life in the public eye. He lives in Melbourne’s inner east with his girlfriend Rebecca Harding – the pair have been together for more than seven years – and their Welsh terrier puppy Henrietta, but admits
that it’s not always easy being the partner of someone in the public eye. “She certainly [found it hard], and that’s why we actually broke up three years in,” Lee says. “She found it really difficult to adjust: people taking an interest in what she was doing, and obviously there was some judgment sometimes, which was difficult. But for me, I’ve always been happy to share things, and that’s why radio suited me. If I’m not prepared to share myself, I can’t expect people to share back with me. “But I don’t love the fact that media these days are more inclined to find the salacious angle in things that people are doing or posting. When we first started, it was nothing like that.” The upside of the attention is his ability to help others. Lee still cherishes the time he received a note of thanks from a soldier. “He had to go out for long periods of time by himself in Afghanistan and used to stockpile the podcasts to listen to so he could feel connected while he was doing a very serious job. You don’t realise how impactful those 40 minutes can be for people – that escape, or that connection to Australia from overseas. “Sometimes people are going through tough times – whether it be things like depression or health battles – and email to say they find a bit of escape or a bit of cheer in what we’re doing. I never really expected that, and those emails are always amazing to read.” ●

A positive mindset from parents is the first step to helping pupils get back in the classroom. Wo r d s

J OA N N E B R O O K F I E L D
tudents at the beginning of their primary school journey, especially those who started prep in 2020, have only ever known education as an inconsistent mix of physical classrooms and long stretches of remote learning. With vaccinations now available to children five and up, our youngest students face the prospect of their first uninterrupted school year. So, how do we prepare them? A positive mindset from parents is the first step, according to Wesley College’s Elsternwick campus head, Jacinta Janssens. “A parent’s perspective will influence how their children will see things or how they’ll feel,” she says. Like most schools, Wesley focuses on developing positive mindsets and wellbeing. The school’s Grow
“Children need to reconnect and build relationships with peers at their level, so they need to learn communication skills that support social connections.” JACINTA JANSSENS, HEAD OF WESLEY COLLEGE ELSTERNWICK CAMPUS Your Mind program focuses on character strengths plus strategies for emotional regulation and socialisation skills. Children have “gained a lot of new skills” from remote learning, says Janssens, such as greater independence, self-management and flexibility, and it’s important to remind them of their self-efficacy. Preparing children on a practical level also helps with the transition to school life. Janssens suggests “posing scenarios and re-familiarising them with the shape of the day”, for example. Talk to them about various aspects of school life and the fact that behaviour expectations are different there. “COVID-19 will be part of our life for a while to come,” she says, so preparing their expectations around that fact is also important. Rapid antigen testing will be in place for at least the first four weeks of term one, and students in
year 3 and above are required to wear masks indoors. The state government says more than 1800 schools have applied for a Shade Sail Grant, meaning students should expect to take some classes outdoors. Given structure is so important to building children’s sense of safety and confidence, Australian parenting website Raising Children (raisingchildren. net.au) advises developing and displaying a morning routine to eliminate stress and keep everyone calm and on time. “Think about what you need to achieve in the mornings,” it says. “You can probably do many things the night before.” In the evenings, Janssens says having “discussions with your child and showing a real interest in them” will not only help children settle in and allow parents to monitor how children are coping but also
build conversational skills, which may need particular attention after lockdowns. “Children need to reconnect and build relationships with peers at their level, so they need to learn communication skills that support social connections,” she says. While face-to-face learning facilitates this crucial development, it can also be exhausting for children. “There will be a real tiredness because they’re not used to both the mental and the physical engagement of the full school day,” Janssens says. Healthy food, plenty of water, quiet reading time, and getting to bed early can all help. “The main thing is really focusing on the productivity of the school day and allowing children just to ‘be’ after school,” she says. “Play, get fresh air and find opportunities to be calm that are not in the digital space.” ●

he so-called “Great Resignation”, in which employees across the globe are quitting their jobs and rethinking their careers, was one of the unexpected outcomes of the pandemic. Extended lockdowns, which opened up the possibility of remote working as a viable alternative to the daily commute, have also prompted a sharp rise in people heading, literally, for the hills. Time in social isolation has also forced a rethink of priorities. What’s really important to me? What kind of lifestyle do I want to be living? These resulting career and tree changes mean families are moving and children are switching schools. “One of the best things about making a change in 2022 is that everything really is rebuilding and reforming; it’s probably one of the best times to
transition from a social perspective,” says Toorak College principal Kristy Kendall, adding that we’ve all shared the same experience of lockdown. “So, coming into a new year, after a period like that, everyone is absolutely more open to inviting those friendships, inviting those new opportunities.” However, Kendall says Toorak College, located on the Mornington Peninsula, welcomes new students year-round: “Any time is the right time to start,” she says, adding that, while a lot of focus is always given to year 12, “every school year is important”. “Childhood is where they have such capacity to stretch. It’s where they develop their own sense of self-worth, and you want an environment to help them do that.” Clinical psychologist Mary Spillane, a mental health expert working with meditation and mindfulness leader Headspace, cautions that if a student finds themselves at a school where “the curriculum doesn’t quite meet their needs”, there can be longer-term consequences.
“When a child is not seen or heard, typically, they start to think there’s something that’s not right about them and can start to develop some issues around confidence and self-esteem,” she says. Spillane says that speaking to other parents at a prospective new school, asking around about the school’s reputation, attending open days and talking
decision-making [to] help give them a sense of ownership and control over what’s happening.” Toorak College’s Kendall says the best approach for parents is to ask if their child can attend the prospective new school for a day. “[A student] can then see for themselves, ‘How did the girls treat me? What were the teachers like? Was
“Childhood is ... where they develop their own sense of self-worth, and you want an environment to help them do that.” KRISTY KENDALL to teachers and the principal are all ways to determine what the best option will be. When contemplating a switch, she advises letting your child know as early as possible that change is afoot, so they have time to adjust. Keeping them involved in the process is also really important. “Try to involve the child as much as possible in the
it exciting as the time passed? Does this look different than my experience or what I thought a school could look like?’ “That’s what we hear a lot from students that come to Toorak: ‘I didn’t know that you could be proud of getting great maths results, and you didn’t have to hide them.’” ●

Architects never play god, of course, but “Let there be light” is a command they can make happen. They hear those four little words a lot in Melbourne’s 19th-century houses. Cavan Villa was one; built in 1885, it was dark and cramped when the current owners bought it in 2010. But it did have a deep backyard, and that gave Windsor architects Pleysier Perkins plenty to work with. Their solution? Courtyards, clerestories, skylights and a Japanese ryokan flow to the new, interlocking rooms and their full-length sliders to luxuriant greenery. With three double bedrooms off the side hall, followed by the kitchen, meals and living areas opening to two of the three courtyards, Cavan Villa became in 2019 a contemporary haven to suit a family or professionals working from home. Close to Chapel Street and Chris Gahan Reserve, it has the benefit of an interesting neighbourhood to break the desk-bound tedium. Polished concrete floors, marble benchtops and timber cabinetry give it the airy beauty beloved by cameras – especially those that snapped Cavan Villa for Home Design and EST Living magazines. Its polychrome bricks are freshly scrubbed and are offset by a new front garden by landscaper Ben Scott. Three original rooms, used flexibly as bedrooms, have japanned Baltic pine floorboards. The front room has a fireplace flanked by bookcases and suits a home office. Bedroom two (open fireplace) has a Maurice Sendak-style jungle mural. The main bedroom (fireplace, chandelier) has a walk-through wardrobe and a grey-mosaic twin en suite.
FINAL WORD
The marble and white-mosaic main bathroom – past the leafy light well – has a shower above the bath. Cavan Villa’s spectacular extension has a heated concrete floor, high ceilings with clerestory windows and an easy connection to nature via huge sliders. The marble kitchen has a Gaggenau oven, cooktop, platewarmer and combi-microwave oven, a Miele dishwasher and an integrated fridge-freezer. Sliders lead to a westfacing bluestone courtyard with a Beefeater barbecue.
